Jackson G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the largest family of integral membrane receptors. They mediate diverse cell signaling pathways and therefore are currently the target for 50% of all prescribed drugs. Cells utilize these receptors to transduce extracellular stimuli across the plasma membrane and activate intracellular G proteins, which then initiate second messenger system cascades. GPCR signaling is the focus of much research. One member of this large family of membrane receptors is the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR). …

M.S., Autumn 2006 Wildlife Biology ECOSYSTEM ENGINEERING: BEAVER AND THE POPULATION STRUCTURE OF COLUMBIA SPOTTED FROGS IN WESTERN MONTANA Chairperson: Lisa Eby Beavers (Castor canadensis) are considered ecosystem engineers, altering hydrologic regimes, ecosystem processes, and modifying community structure. Effects of beaver on the spatial pattern of lentic habitat and populations using those habitats have not been examined. I used a landscape database and eight microsatellite markers to compare the scale and pattern of lentic sites, their occupancy, and population structure by Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) between watersheds with and without beaver activity. Lininger, Jay Charles, Fall 2006 Environmental Studies Chair: Dr. Len Broberg This case study documents the effectiveness of stand-scale forest restoration activities undertaken in the “Penny Stew” project on federal land in the central Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon. Its dual purpose is to 1) define reference conditions and build a site-specific case for restoration through multi-scale analysis of historical ecology (Chapter III), and 2) demonstrate streamlined monitoring protocols that practitioners can use to adapt restoration practices over time (Chapter IV). Forensic Anthropology : Its Contribution To Forensic Cases Submitted To The University Of Montana For Analysis, Ana M. Byrne

The Anthropology Lab at the University of Montana is regularly consulted by law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Montana on cases suspected to involve skeletal human remains. In this paper, how specifically Forensic Anthropology contributes to these cases is examined. Cases submitted to the UM Lab for analysis between the years of 1971 and 2004 are followed up and the agencies involved are asked specific questions regarding each case. Agencies responded to questions regarding 97 of the UM’s 238 total cases. Results of this study show that of those cases containing contemporary human remains about 18% were identified after …

Despite numerous studies of avian locomotion, we are only beginning to grasp the intricacies of flapping flight. The effect of 8-oxoguanine in the consensus sequence of êB DNA on the binding affinity of p50BD was determined using a 22-mer and a 30-mer double-stranded DNA oligonucleotide containing the NF-êB binding site. The addition of a carboxyl moiety at position 8 on guanine (creating 8-oxoguanine) was observed to change the binding affinity of the transcription factor for the êB DNA sequences at each modified guanine site. The protocol used a p50 binding domain protein (residues 23 to 366 from the p50 protein) and a p50 mutant protein with a single amino acid mutation of the wild type histidine 67 …
