Confronting The Challenges Of Whale Avoidance By Large Vessels To Reduce Collision Risk: A Quantitative Approach, Jennifer E. Helm
Confronting The Challenges Of Whale Avoidance By Large Vessels To Reduce Collision Risk: A Quantitative Approach, Jennifer E. Helm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Disturbance of wildlife by human transportation infrastructure is ubiquitous. This type of human-wildlife conflict has the potential to negatively impact wildlife population growth rates, especially for at-risk species like large whales. While many whale populations are rebounding as a result of a moratorium on commercial whaling, increasing ship traffic constitutes a significant threat to whale conservation efforts in the form of ship-whale collisions (“ship strikes”). Ship strike avoidance is difficult because vessel operators can only see whales when they are breaking the surface of the water, or “available for detection,” and even then, they will only see them a fraction …
Watered Down: The Challenges Of Managing Water Resources In Montana, Beau E. Baker
Watered Down: The Challenges Of Managing Water Resources In Montana, Beau E. Baker
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Like much of the American West, Montana sits in the cross hairs of climate change. State drought resiliency projects and cooperative watershed management are on the rise in the face of decreased snowpack, early runoff, precipitation variability and lower seasonal stream flows. Population growth, land use practices, recreation and tourism all contribute to pressures on state water supplies.
Montana is faced with the arrival of invasive species that threaten the ecological health of its lakes, rivers and streams. State budget constraints and depressed agency capacity are hurting our ability to fend off these threats. There’s a lack of public education …
Missed Opportunity: The Strategic And Rhetorical Miscalculations Of Deep Ecology, Taylor C. Hastings
Missed Opportunity: The Strategic And Rhetorical Miscalculations Of Deep Ecology, Taylor C. Hastings
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The first chapter of the project analyzes Deep Ecological philosophy, presented by Arne Naess, and its inability to coalesce as a social movement because of Naess’ strategic belief that an open philosophical template, as well as a rhetorical strategy of being instructive, instead of rhetorically moving Deep Ecologists towards engaging concrete plans towards change to mitigate destructive human environmental practices, as the most effective strategy. The second chapter analyzes the Dark Mountain Project and the ways it has grown out of Deep Ecology, and the ways the Dark Mountain Project is misguided in its interpretation of the works of Robinson …
Breaking Chains Of Oppression: Popular Culture And The Plundering Of Blackness, Corina Sacajawea Ambrose
Breaking Chains Of Oppression: Popular Culture And The Plundering Of Blackness, Corina Sacajawea Ambrose
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis focuses on the ways in which white supremacy created mass incarceration, specifically mass incarceration of black individuals, and how this continues to perpetuate a racial caste system in the United States. First, I examine contemporary novelist Colson Whitehead‘s The Underground Railroad to provide a historical background of white supremacy and slavery. Then, I argue that pop culture is one area in which artists are focused on the abolition of the prison-industrial complex and ending mass incarceration. Finally, I focus on JAY-Z‘s music video “The Story of O.J.“ and Beyoncé‘s visual album Lemonade and her 2018 Coachella performance to …
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …
Interleukin-6 And Exercise; Early Evidence Of A Novel Myokine, Brendan Hogg Mr.
Interleukin-6 And Exercise; Early Evidence Of A Novel Myokine, Brendan Hogg Mr.
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) was first identified as a pleiotropic cytokine, with a host of body-wide functions. Cytokine functions are characterized by chronically elevated levels within various inflammatory states. In this regard, IL-6 is largely associated with the acute phase response to many stimuli and performs specific actions when produced from certain cell types. Accrued evidence indicates IL-6 release from skeletal muscle often includes myokine functions. Novel myokine functions are adaptive in nature, and as compared to inflammatory/cytokine roles, exhibit a transient time course. Following exercise plasma IL-6 peaks and returns to resting levels within 1-2 hours. In contrast, IL-6 is observed …
Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William Dale Schroeder
Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William Dale Schroeder
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. This is problematic because ideology is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Archaeology’s preoccupation for over 100 years has been the systematic location, identification, and excavation of discrete artifacts; features, and sites; interpreting meanings from comparative studies and data sets; and putting the past in order all while documenting change over time. Historical archaeologist Mark P. Leone identified fences, the Plat of the ideal City of Zion, …
Large-Scale Photovoltaic Solar Implementation: Montanan Stakeholder Opportunities And Challenges, Erika Mickelson
Large-Scale Photovoltaic Solar Implementation: Montanan Stakeholder Opportunities And Challenges, Erika Mickelson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Large-scale photovoltaic (PV) solar projects were operationalized in the 1990s resulting in a plethora of studies focusing on environmental, economic, technological, and policy studies. Minimal research investigates the similarities and differences between conveners using PV solar technology. This case study evaluates stakeholder perceptions regarding project management, project design, and external factors influencing the success of large-scale PV solar projects convened by a qualifying facility, regional utility company, and electric co-operative in Montana. Respondents revealed concepts were similar across conveners; yet, emphasized unique implications for each convener. The results indicated the importance for all conveners to incorporate marketing strategies, local interests …
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The nuclear receptor PPARγ is a lipid-dependent transcription factor which regulates many pathways in lipid metabolism. Due to functions in adipogenesis, glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity it has been a target of type II diabetes mellitus therapeutics since the 1990s. Due to a poorly understood anti-inflammatory pathway it is also an emerging target in neurodegenerative disease. Despite extensive research the majority of the structural mechanism underlying the regulation of this proteins’ function is poorly understood. It is often thought that nuclear receptors function in a simple two-state model with defined on and off states. This model only considers one region …
Leaving More Than Footprints: Impacts Of Tourism And Perceptions Of Change In Chilean Patagonia, Heidi Blair
Leaving More Than Footprints: Impacts Of Tourism And Perceptions Of Change In Chilean Patagonia, Heidi Blair
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Visitation to protected areas is on the rise globally, and the Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia is part of that trend. Within Aysén, Cerro Castillo National Reserve is one of the protected areas that has seen the largest increase in visitation in recent years. Protected area tourism catalyzes changes in surrounding communities, and it is important to understand resident perceptions of these changes in order to inform management planning and to implement effective, equitable conservation policy. In this study, I use qualitative research methods to investigate local residents’ perceptions of social, economic, and ecological changes spurred by or related to …
The Effect Of The State Giant Traveling Map Of Montana On The Geographic Literacy Of Fourth Graders In Western Montana, Rebecca A. Kranitz
The Effect Of The State Giant Traveling Map Of Montana On The Geographic Literacy Of Fourth Graders In Western Montana, Rebecca A. Kranitz
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A complex set of factors and processes operating within the United States public education system contribute to high rates of geographic illiteracy in the majority of young adults. These factors include, but are not limited to, a lack of structured federal controls over state geography requirements, insufficient time to implement effective geography curricula, and inadequate assessment techniques. To raise rates of geographic literacy, the National Geographic Society (NGS) created the State Giant Traveling Maps (SGTM) to actively engage students in a geography education experience that simultaneously promotes positive attitudes towards geography while strengthening student map skills. The SGTMs incorporate a …

Measuring Contact With Transgender Individuals: An Evaluation Of Factors Associated With Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Objectives: Research has suggested that transgender individuals experience high degrees of prejudice and discrimination (e.g., Grant et al., 2010; James et al., 2016). These attitudes affect transgender individuals in multiple domains, such as employment, education, healthcare, housing, public accommodations, and personal relationships (James et al., 2016). Importantly, contact as an intervention strategy has been shown to reduce anti-transgender prejudice quickly and effectively, especially when compared to other prejudice reduction methods (Walch et al., 2012; Case & Stewart, 2013; Tompkins, Sheilds, Hillman, & White, 2015). The aim of the current study was to explore how different types of contact (e.g., …

Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Missouri are a socially and economically important game species generating annual revenue in excess of $1 billion. The last comprehensive deer study in Missouri was conducted in the 1980s – 1990s when deer populations were rapidly expanding. Since this time there has been a reduction in deer population size, declining growth rates, changes in harvest strategies, and the emergence and spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD). These changes have rendered prior survival estimates outdated, and the presence of CWD requires a deeper understanding of movement patterns and space use. We were interested in …
Natural Amenities And Rural Development: A Multilevel Analysis Of Regional Trends And Local Patterns, Dawson Reisig
Natural Amenities And Rural Development: A Multilevel Analysis Of Regional Trends And Local Patterns, Dawson Reisig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
As rural communities began seeing increased rates of growth following the rural rebound of the 1970’s, many studies have examined the causes and consequences of this shift through the lens of regional amenities and migration trends. Additionally, as development patterns have moved outwards from concentrated growth in urban areas to sprawling development at the rural-urban fringe, many studies have examined the locations of rural development in relation to open space and the amenities it provides. However, examinations of the relationship between these two processes have been severely lacking in the field of land use studies, despite widespread acknowledgement that the …

Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters, Erin M. Boggs
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) Crews lack an injury surveillance program to collect information on non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. Tactical athletes including: police, military and structural firefighters all have a variety of collection systems in place for injury data collection. The lack of injury data prevents WLFF crews from identifying high-risk environments, implementing injury prevention programs, and improving the overall quality of care on the job. Over the last several decades the recent rise in wildfire occurrences and wildfire suppression costs creates a need for healthy and strong individuals in the field. The cost of firefighter salaries and medical care can be …
Determining Skin Temperature Differences Between Three Cold Compression Modalities, Madison S. Mccarthy
Determining Skin Temperature Differences Between Three Cold Compression Modalities, Madison S. Mccarthy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Background: Cold and compression are common therapeutic interventions used in the treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries. Cryotherapy uses extreme cold to decrease cell metabolism and pain following injury. Compression works to decrease overall blood flow and control edema. The benefit of combining cold and compression is to increase the rate and depth of the temperature drop, while utilizing the effects of both modalities. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine if a crushed ice pack was as effective as newer cold compression technology to decrease skin temperature. A crushed ice pack was compared to the PowerPlay and Game …
Colonization Of And Adaptation To Tidal Marshes In The Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus Sandwichensis), Phred M. Benham
Colonization Of And Adaptation To Tidal Marshes In The Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus Sandwichensis), Phred M. Benham
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Intraspecific patterns of geographic variation reflect a dynamic history of colonization and divergence in response to spatially varying selective pressures. Analysis of this phenotypic variation has long stimulated biological thought, yet many outstanding questions remain regarding the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms driving patterns of geographic variation. In my dissertation, I collected data on demographic history, physiological traits contributing to salinity tolerance, and acclimation responses to different salinities to elucidate the mechanisms shaping colonization and adaptive divergence in tidal marsh populations of Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). Specifically, I addressed two main questions related to adaptive divergence in this species: (1) how …
Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker
Home Is Where The Food Is: Causes And Consequences Of Partial Migration In Elk, Kristin Jennifer Barker
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Migratory and non-migratory ungulates often coexist in partially migratory populations, but the mechanisms that drive and maintain different migratory behaviors within the same herd are poorly understood. In western North America, increasing numbers of elk (Cervus canadensis) reside on low-elevation winter range year-round. These residents can cause issues associated with crop damage, potential for disease transmission to livestock, and reduced effectiveness of harvest management strategies. Because migrants transfer nutrients, alter carnivore distributions, and structure vegetative communities across seasonal ranges, reductions in migratory behavior raise ecological as well as management-related concerns. This work investigated the factors affecting migratory behavior …
A Cartographic Workflow Manual For Endangered Species Conservation, Martin P. Viereckl
A Cartographic Workflow Manual For Endangered Species Conservation, Martin P. Viereckl
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In response to global consumer demand for rare and exotic wildlife products, poaching of endangered species has become pervasive around the world (Eliason 1999). Despite the enactment of CITES, and other international efforts to protect vulnerable species from overexploitation, the global market for illegal wildlife products is estimated as high as $20-billion a year industry (Wyler 2008). Within important wildlife habitat sites, law enforcement struggle to curb rampant poaching that threatens the ultimate survival of many endangered species (Jachmann 2008; Rowcliffe 2004). Law-enforcement agencies responsible for protecting wildlife from poachers often lack geospatial tools that could greatly improve the effectiveness …
The Introduction Of Yoga Recovery On Physiological And Psychological Stress And Performance In Ncaa Athletes, Paige D. Schober
The Introduction Of Yoga Recovery On Physiological And Psychological Stress And Performance In Ncaa Athletes, Paige D. Schober
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
NCAA student athletes face unique physiological and psychological stressors daily, which may contribute to overtraining, burnout, and other physical and mental health issues. However, NCAA institutions often leave recovery up to the individual athlete due to time restriction and Countable Athletic Related Activities (CARA) hour limitations on team mandated activities. Attention to methods to promote recovery from these training loads is increasing in NCAA institutions. A mind-body activity such as yoga is proposed to have physiological and psychological benefits for student athletes. The goal of this review is to identify which aspects of yoga promote the most effective recovery in …

The Effect Of Parental Involvement On Student-Athlete Academic Performance, Academic Self- Efficacy, Functional Independence, And Achievement Of Adulthood Criteria, Grace Harris Gardner
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Parental involvement in student- athletes’ lives is ubiquitous and important. Despite efforts of many to determine the best means for student-athletes to succeed academically, little is known about the relationship between levels of parent involvement and an athlete’s ability to succeed academically. Having an involved, but not over-involved, parenting relationship is key to having their children develop the necessary academic skills to be ready for the realm of collegiate athletics.
The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative analyses of NCAA Division I student-athletes in the Big Sky Conference was to examine the relationship (if any) among parental involvement, academic performance, academic …
The Enduring Importance Of Wildness: Shepherding Wilderness Through The Anthropocene, Patrick Ram Kelly
The Enduring Importance Of Wildness: Shepherding Wilderness Through The Anthropocene, Patrick Ram Kelly
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Wilderness and wildness have long been essential values at the heart of American conservation. Both have played critical roles in the formation of environmental ethics, providing a conceptual foundation for the belief that the non-human natural world is valuable for its own sake (Nash, 2001). After grounding and inspiring much of 20th century environmentalism, their influence in the current century has grown increasingly tentative. The arrival of what some have called the “Anthropocene epoch” – a term meant to capture the planetary scale impacts of human activity – now threatens the continued viability and relevance of wilderness and wildness to …
Exercise Program To Modify Risk Factors For Shoulder Injury In Collegiate And Professional Pitchers, Rina Kasuga
Exercise Program To Modify Risk Factors For Shoulder Injury In Collegiate And Professional Pitchers, Rina Kasuga
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Upper extremity injuries are very common in collegiate and professional baseball pitchers. Approximately 60% of all injuries in collegiate baseball are due to throwing, and pitchers suffer over 70% of throwing-related injuries. In Major League Baseball (MLB), about 50% of players on the disabled list were pitchers, and the injury rate for pitchers is 34 % higher than position players. Therefore, there is a significant need for injury prevention programs to effectively reduce injuries in the population. Although numerous research has been devoted to the study of risk factors and treatment of baseball-related injuries in youth and adolescent players, there …

Mismatched Identities: Experiencing White Womanhood And White Motherhood As An Exotic Dancer, Phoenicia S. Sweeney-Summers
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In this paper I examine the work of exotic dancers in the Rocky Mountain West, focusing on their identities, identity conflict, identity threat, and overcompensation. In over twelve hours of recorded interviews, I asked ten exotic dancers working in Montana about their work, families, and communities as well as their perceptions of themselves and their work. I found that this marginalized group that resides in places that have rural characteristics, often face identity threat because their identities are known within their communities. The identity threat arises as a result of expectations and stereotypes of dancers, and in order to deal …
Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri
Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The environmental history of the mountains in Morocco was written under the French colonial administration; and its revision upon independence was biased toward an Arabist perspective. These historical narratives significantly influence the study of contemporary spatial phenomena, typically by undermining the validity of the vernacular mode of production of space. This study (1) reviews key myths pertaining to the spatial history and transformation in mountainous areas in Morocco; and (2) analyzes the contemporary mountain settlement of Ain Mediouna, Province of Taounate in light of a revised environmental narrative. Methods include the following: (1) historical document analysis; and (2) morphogenetic analysis …
Risk And Resiliency Factors In Predicting Recidivism Among Native Americans On A Montana Reservation, Ciara Dawn Hansen
Risk And Resiliency Factors In Predicting Recidivism Among Native Americans On A Montana Reservation, Ciara Dawn Hansen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Background: According to a 2014 report, approximately 1 in 100 American adults are incarcerated, which represents a 500% increase over the past 40 years and accounts for the largest population of prisoners in the world. Despite research that suggests incarceration is not an effective deterrent for crime, incarceration continues to increase at a historically unprecedented rate. Mass incarceration disproportionately affects communities of color. In Montana, Native Americans are overrepresented at all levels of the correctional system. In addition, Native American ex-offenders are just over twice as likely as non-Native Americans to recidivate and be returned to a correctional institution, mostly …

Just Open A Window: Understanding The Vulnerability To Summer Heat Of A Mountain Community In The Western United States, Missoula, Mt, Julie J. Tompkins
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
How do we conceptualize vulnerability or resiliency to a natural hazard when it has not historically been understood as such? This study focuses on Missoula, located in mountains of western Montana, which has steadily grown by 1-2% per year to almost 75,000 residents. The formerly temperate quality of its winters and summers has also been changing. Projections from the 2017 Montana Climate Assessment estimate the state will experience a 2-5°F increase in mean annual air temperature over the next two decades, prompting city and county officials to plan for scenarios not formerly in their consideration. Of further concern is the …
