The Resilience Of American Indian And Alaska Native Older Adults In The Context Of Major Health Disparities In Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Asthma, And Arthritis: A Narrative Review, Ennis Frank Vaile
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Background: Multiple major health disparities have been documented in Indian Country, including cardiovascular disease (Howard et al., 1999), diabetes (Acton et al., 2003), asthma (Mannino et al., 2002), and arthritis (Barbour et al., 2017). Prior research has shown that the prevalence rates of these conditions in American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) are among the highest in the United States. Given these health disparities, aging older adults in Indian Country may be especially vulnerable to the development of concurrent negative mental health outcomes, particularly depression (Garrett et al., 2015). Nonetheless, AI/AN older adults continue to age successfully and exhibit substantial …
"Our Loons": Participant Attachments And Motivations Within A Community-Based Monitoring Program, Taylor Tewksbury
"Our Loons": Participant Attachments And Motivations Within A Community-Based Monitoring Program, Taylor Tewksbury
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Organizations can benefit from understanding person-place relationships and volunteer motivations as they recruit and sustain involvement in their community-based monitoring (CBM) programs. Place attachment, or the bond between people and their meaningful environments, is one lens through which to explore these relationships. Past studies have associated place attachment with environmentally responsible behaviors (ERB), such as CBM involvement. However, few studies have explored the relationship between place attachment and CBM in the context of volunteers’ attachment to the species of study.
The purpose of this research study was to explore the place-based relationships and motivations among volunteers of the Loon Preservation …
Comedy, Camaraderie, And Conflict: Using Humor To Defuse Disputes Among Friends, Sheena A. Bringa
Comedy, Camaraderie, And Conflict: Using Humor To Defuse Disputes Among Friends, Sheena A. Bringa
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study sought to examine the role humor plays in defusing conflict between friends from an evolutionary perspective. Although a vast amount of research exists on humor, friendship, and conflict, no single study connects all three of these concepts together. This study attempted to fill this gap by examining how different humor styles used between friends in times of conflict relate to friendship satisfaction and life satisfaction. Specifically, the hypotheses predicted that friends who use affiliative humor to deescalate conflict are more inclined to report higher relational satisfaction and improved individual well-being than friends who use maladaptive humor to deescalate …

How we see the world and ourselves in relation to it is largely achieved by the lens we are looking through and associated experiences within this relationship. This is additionally true when considering the acknowledged fact that Indigenous Knowledges are derived from natural and cultural sources and these assist in constituting the cultural identities of those Peoples associated with these sources. Presently there is a hunger for access and use of Indigenous Knowledges (IK) as never before seen in public ways, through a national Call for collaborative means to apply these knowledges to such as the issues we globally face …
Integrating Social Emotional Learning In The Elementary Music Classroom, Nicole Evans
Integrating Social Emotional Learning In The Elementary Music Classroom, Nicole Evans
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, many students demonstrated a need for further social emotional learning (SEL) support. The work of this project focuses on how to help support students’ SEL development through SEL integration into the elementary music classroom. An increased focus on integrating SEL throughout educational settings is relatively new, and thus the research into how to do this effectively is still emerging. Based on the principle of collective teacher efficacy, this project explores how to integrate SEL specifically aligned with the Second Step Elementary Curriculum into the kindergarten through fifth grade general music classroom. Utilizing the existing …
Flicker Feather Films: Visual Anthropology, Indigenous Film, And Documentary Filmmaking, Martin I. Lopez
Flicker Feather Films: Visual Anthropology, Indigenous Film, And Documentary Filmmaking, Martin I. Lopez
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In order to contribute 21st-century tools to educational settings, this dissertation draws from the growing subfield, multimodal anthropology, which includes, but is not limited to visual anthropology and film. This dissertation is composed of a series of documentary films created by an Indigenous filmmaker. When combined with Indigenous filmmaking, tribal cultures can begin to share their points of view through self-representation. Indigenous methodologies helped to frame the documentary films I made for my dissertation by aiming to combat the perpetuation of stereotypes and misrepresentation by non-Native filmmakers. Documentary films within anthropology still have validity in academia if the goal is …
Ecological Adaptation And Speciation In Chipmunks, Nathanael David Filer Herrera
Ecological Adaptation And Speciation In Chipmunks, Nathanael David Filer Herrera
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Understanding how evolutionary and ecological mechanisms promote speciation and adaptation is one of the central challenges of evolutionary biology. Recent advancements in theoretical, methodological, and computational approaches now allow biologists to test long-standing questions regarding the evolutionary history of species. This includes the genomic underpinnings of reproductive barriers and adaptive phenotypes, and the contribution of ecology, geography, and demography in the generation and maintenance of biodiversity. While great strides have been made in understanding the genetic and ecological factors that underlie speciation and local adaptation, many open questions remain. My dissertation first seeks to address questions about how we define …
Assessing The Impact Of Parallel Burnout Fires On Flank Rate Of Spread, Erik Borke
Assessing The Impact Of Parallel Burnout Fires On Flank Rate Of Spread, Erik Borke
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The effects of flank-parallel suppression fires on the local rate of spread (ROS) of freely burning headfires through fully cured homogeneous grass fuels are assessed. Data sets include: one thermal image stack of a prescribed burn recorded by drone, and a suite of simulation experiments carried out in Wildland Urban Interface Fire Dynamics Simulator (WFDS). A new approach to computing ROS, curvature proxy driven normals to convex polylines, was developed to carry out this analysis. ROS time series depicting flank acceleration of the prescribed burn and simulation experiments, observable under coarse and fine directional classification schemes respectively, are the primary …
Beaver Dam Analogs (Bdas) Alter Carbon Pools, Fluxes, And Concentrations Of Intermountain Headwater Streams, Hilary Schultz
Beaver Dam Analogs (Bdas) Alter Carbon Pools, Fluxes, And Concentrations Of Intermountain Headwater Streams, Hilary Schultz
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) have emerged as a climate adaptation and restoration strategy for water resource management in the drought-prone Western U.S., yet the focus has been on their influence on water quantity, overlooking effects on broader ecological components. By increasing water residence time and facilitating sediment retention, BDAs have the potential to influence carbon pools, fluxes, and concentrations. To examine the influence of BDAs on instream and riparian organic C and trace gases, we studied three intermountain headwater streams restored with BDAs two years after restoration during the summer of 2021. We found that there were subtle differences in …
High-Frequency Observations Of Riverine Inorganic Carbon Variability Using In Situ Autonomous Sensors, Qipei Shangguan
High-Frequency Observations Of Riverine Inorganic Carbon Variability Using In Situ Autonomous Sensors, Qipei Shangguan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Rivers and streams actively metabolize, emit, transport and store carbon of various forms received from terrestrial environments. Our current understanding of how rivers and streams contribute to the global carbon cycle remains limited, however, in part due to high temporal variability and complexity of inorganic carbon chemistry. In situ autonomous chemical sensors provide powerful tools to observe changes in rivers and streams and enable development of CO2-specific models to quantify riverine processes. In many aspects, our ability to utilize high-frequency sensor measurements remains limited.
This dissertation aims to improve our understanding of inorganic carbon cycling through sensor technology and numerical …
Characterization Of Protein Folding Pathways And Structural Stability, Michael Tyler Rothfuss
Characterization Of Protein Folding Pathways And Structural Stability, Michael Tyler Rothfuss
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Proteins are large, flexible molecules with an extremely large number of potential conformations. Proteins expressed in cells traverse available conformations to reach a consistent, thermodynamically stable, biologically active structure through a process known as protein folding. The atomic composition of the protein, defined by a sequence of amino acid residues encoded in DNA as a gene, determines the protein folding pathway and ultimate native structure of the protein molecule. Understanding the relationship between the sequence of amino acids and the resulting protein structure has been a central challenge in protein research for decades. To fill this knowledge gap, we test …
Seasonality And Depth Variability In The Microbial Ecology Of A Large, Oligotrophic Lake, Kate A. Evans
Seasonality And Depth Variability In The Microbial Ecology Of A Large, Oligotrophic Lake, Kate A. Evans
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Planktonic microorganisms are the primary drivers of energy flow in aquatic ecosystems, and their ability to rapidly respond to changing environmental conditions makes them key sentinels of ecosystem variability. However, understanding how microorganisms respond to variations in their environment requires improved understanding of microbial physiology and metabolism. Microorganisms that live in fluid environments experience a dynamic world, where resources needed for growth can be scarce or plentiful. In some cases, such variation can be directly linked to the physical movement of water, for example, vertical mixing. Temperate lakes experience strong seasonality in stratification and mixing, so resolving the relationships between …
Predicting Mountain Lion Resource Selection And Abundance In North America, William Connor O'Malley
Predicting Mountain Lion Resource Selection And Abundance In North America, William Connor O'Malley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The relationship between habitat quality and density is well documented in lower trophic levels but to what extent it can be extended to higher trophic levels is unknown. I tested the relationship between habitat quality, home-range size and density using a wide-ranging, well-studied, top carnivore, the mountain lion (Puma concolor). First, I created a second-order resource selection function (RSF) for mountain lions in their current North American range using GPS collar data from 476 individuals in 20 study sites and remotely-sensed landscape data. I used the RSF and home range estimates derived from collared animals to quantify mountain …
Healthcare Provider Uncertainty And Communicative Management Strategies, Katie Benson
Healthcare Provider Uncertainty And Communicative Management Strategies, Katie Benson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Uncertainty exists ubiquitously within provider-patient interactions. Healthcare providers (HCPs) often face uncertainty during patient-provider interactions, for reasons including inconclusive test results, ambiguous communication, and lacking the resources to make diagnoses. When healthcare providers experience uncertainty, their behavior and communication can be negatively impacted. For example, prior research suggests when HCPs experience uncertainty, they may engage in authoritative, prejudiced and assumption-ridden behavior towards patients (Dietta & Rand, 2007; Drewniak et al., 2017: Portnoy et al., 2013; Poteat et al., 2013). To date, research on HCP uncertainty has been limited to specific health conditions and contexts such as cancer, vascular anomalies, and …

Connecting Schools To Communities With Student-Produced Multimodal Compositions, Eric M. Wright
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In this paper, I use research on embodied cognition to support learning objectives for a unit that I’ve designed to increase reading comprehension, promote digital citizenship, and provide scaffolding for students to produce digital multimodal compositions. The unit is aligned to English Language Arts Common Core and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. I conclude with an argument for schools to focus on transparency over accountability and propose using digital literary magazines that contain the students' multimodal compositions to connect with communities.

Liberal Men, Rational Kings: The Democratization Of Sovereign Individualism, Austin Daniel Ladd
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Theoretical traditions are reactionary insofar as they are attempts to remedy deleterious conditions generated by certain political, cultural, and economic situations characteristic of a particular polity at a particular time. Using this lens, I investigate the principles of classical liberalism and suggest that they are specifically designed to solve the problems that animated the world of divine right, essentially functioning as transitional mechanisms pulling society towards liberal social contract regimes and away from antiquated feudal institutions and absolute monarchy. I craft a narrative that demonstrates that the main problem all of them coalesce to solve is individualism which, under divine …
Impacts Of Climate And Wildfire On Western Larch Regeneration, Spencer T. Vieira
Impacts Of Climate And Wildfire On Western Larch Regeneration, Spencer T. Vieira
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Fire plays a critical role in forests of the western United States (US), but as wildfire and climate deviate from historical patterns, increasing fire activity may significantly alter forest ecosystems. To understand the impacts of changing climate and wildfire activity on conifer forests, we studied the impact of wildfire and annual post-fire climate on western larch (Larix occidentalis) regeneration. We destructively sampled 1651 seedlings from 57 sites within 32 fires that burned at moderate or high severity from 2000-2015 in the northwestern US. Using dendrochronological methods, we estimated germination years of seedlings to calculate annual recruitment rates. We …
The Effects Of Weather On Facilitating The Intensification And Collapse Of Bark Beetle Outbreaks In Ponderosa Pine Forests Of The Northern Rocky Mountains And The Black Hills, Jordan T. Lestina
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Bark beetles are a diverse family of insect herbivores, of which the most aggressive species can cause significant tree mortality, and are integral components of disturbance regimes in conifer dominated forests of North America. Recent drought events across the western U.S. have been broadly associated with the initiation of multiple bark beetle outbreaks in ponderosa pine forests during the last two decades. Changing weather conditions, such as those observed during the onset of drought, affect outbreak progression through their influence on bark beetle physiology and life history traits and the overall vigor and defensiveness of host trees. This study used …
Genetic And Environmental Contributions To Wolbachia-Induced Cytoplasmic Incompatibility, Kelley Van Vaerenberghe
Genetic And Environmental Contributions To Wolbachia-Induced Cytoplasmic Incompatibility, Kelley Van Vaerenberghe
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Maternally-transmitted Wolbachia infect the cells of most insect species, but their frequencies in host populations vary. While much of their success can be attributed to their ability to manipulate host reproduction, these manipulations are context-dependent, varying due to several biotic and abiotic factors. Wolbachia’s most common manipulation, cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), is a conditional sterility phenotype where male-female host compatibility depends on their infection status. Specifically, CI occurs when infected males produce modified sperm that cause increased embryonic lethality unless the female carries a similar infection. Rescuing their eggs from CI increases the relative fitness of infected females, promoting Wolbachia spread …

“Luminescent As An Anglerfish”: Creative Writing As A Strategy For Building Figurative Language Skills In School-Aged Children, Dana Fitz Gale
“Luminescent As An Anglerfish”: Creative Writing As A Strategy For Building Figurative Language Skills In School-Aged Children, Dana Fitz Gale
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This pretest/ posttest nonequivalent groups study explored the relationship between classroom-based creative writing instruction and the figurative language abilities of fourth grade students. Figurative language is widespread within the oral and written discourse of K-12 classrooms and is an essential component of higher-level language and literacy development.
Despite the prevalence of non-literal language in educational settings and its relevance to children’s academic and social success, research concerning best practices for teaching non-literal language remains scarce. A few studies have suggested that creative writing may be an effective vehicle for fostering figurative language in children. Poetry writing seems especially promising, since …

Supervised Cancer Rehabilitation: Applications For Utilizing Existing Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Facilities For Cancer Patients And Survivors, Nancy A. Condit
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Currently, the NIH reports there are approximately 18 million Americans with a history of cancer. Cancer statistics are projected to rise to 22.1 million by 2030. In addition to cancer, cardiovascular diseases are globally the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. The body of research in this area clearly demonstrates that greater amounts of physical activity correspond with a lower risk of cancer recurrence and all-cause mortality, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). Exercise rehabilitation success in cancer patients, both during and after treatment, is limited by several barriers, including the lack of facilities, trained personnel and financial resources. In response to …

The Lonely Battle: Women’S Journey Through The Nicu, Molly Kay Murphy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
One in ten pregnancies end with placement of an infant into the NICU (NCHS, 2021). NICU mothers experience increased rates of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, (Lefkowitz et al., 2010; Lotterman et al., 2019) and little is known about their lived experiences in the NICU. To gain a better understanding of the stressor’s women face, this research asked: How do women with infants in NICU care make meaning of their NICU experience? Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (Smith et al., 2009), two rounds of semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants. The results revealed women’s emotional experiences while having an infant in …
