Amish, Stephen J. M.S., Autumn 2006 Wildlife Biology ECOSYSTEM ENGINEERING: BEAVER AND THE POPULATION STRUCTURE OF COLUMBIA SPOTTED FROGS IN WESTERN MONTANA Chairperson: Lisa Eby Beavers (Castor canadensis) are considered ecosystem engineers, altering hydrologic regimes, ecosystem processes, and modifying community structure. Effects of beaver on the spatial pattern of lentic habitat and populations using those habitats have not been examined. I used a landscape database and eight microsatellite markers to compare the scale and pattern of lentic sites, their occupancy, and population structure by Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) between watersheds with and without beaver activity. Across all watersheds frog …

Alaskan Eskimo And Polynesian Island Population Skeletal Anatomy: The "Pacific Paradox" Revisited Through Surface Area To Body Mass Comparisons, Wendy Nicole Leach Jan 2006

Alaskan Eskimo And Polynesian Island Population Skeletal Anatomy: The "Pacific Paradox" Revisited Through Surface Area To Body Mass Comparisons, Wendy Nicole Leach

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This project is an attempt to re-examine the “Pacific Paradox”, as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The “Pacific Paradox” has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall …

Evaluation Of An Ecohydrologic-Process Model Approach To Estimating Annual Mountain-Block Recharge, Ian Auguste Magruder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Magruder, Ian, M.S., December 2006 Geology Evaluation of an Ecohydrologic-Process Model Approach to Estimating Annual Mountain-Block Recharge Chairperson: Dr. William Woessner Regional subsurface mountain-block recharge (MBR) is viewed as a key component of basin aquifer systems found in semi-arid environments. Yet water resource managers do not have a commonly available and reasonably invoked quantitative method to constrain possible MBR rates. Recent advances in landscape-scale ecohydrologic process modeling offer the possibility that weather, climate, and land surface physical and vegetative conditions can be used to estimate MBR. We present an approach that uses remotely sensed physiographic data to model a mountain …

Utilization Of The Distributed-Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation-Model (Dhsvm) To Quantify Streamflow Changes And Slope Failure Probability Following The Snow-Talon Fire Near Lincoln Montana, Usa, Eric Lee Tangedahl Jan 2006

Utilization Of The Distributed-Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation-Model (Dhsvm) To Quantify Streamflow Changes And Slope Failure Probability Following The Snow-Talon Fire Near Lincoln Montana, Usa, Eric Lee Tangedahl

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Models are commonly used to attempt to simulate complex interactions on the landscape. Many factors such as vegetation, soils, topography, weather and disturbances can influence the hydrology of a watershed. Understanding what is influencing changes in streamflow following fire can be difficult due to lack of data or models running at inappropriate resolution. In dealing with the large spatial extent of approximately 37,000 acres burned at the Snow-Talon Fire near Lincoln Montana and heterogeneous landscape characteristics it is difficult to know the specific regions where mitigation efforts should be focused or what specific influencing factors may be affecting the watershed …

Learning To Change And Changing Learning In Environmental Management: A Case Study Of The Kaw Nature Reserve In French Guiana, Kimberly Knowles Notin Jan 2006

Learning To Change And Changing Learning In Environmental Management: A Case Study Of The Kaw Nature Reserve In French Guiana, Kimberly Knowles Notin

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Participation is a key component in socially just, successful nature conservation. Yet, participation can range from informing citizens to offering them decision-making power. Only participation that allows for an open, respectful negotiation of conservation planning and implementation opens the door to engaging, place-appropriate conservation, rather than conservation implemented by external agents with external agendas. However ecologically or socially correct these external agendas may be, collaboration by all stakeholders validates the appropriateness of conservation projects. One conservation tool is education, which typically assumes that the public lacks environmental knowledge and that information can create environmentally aware and active citizens. Often in …

Addressing Contaminants In Traditional Foods In Alaska: Environmental Justice Framing And Policy Approaches, Mary Beth Mckinley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The transport of contaminants to the Arctic and their presence in traditional foods in the region is causing concern about potential adverse health impacts resulting from exposure to these globally-borne chemicals. In this study, ten stakeholders in the issue of contaminants in traditional foods in Alaska were interviewed to determine how they define the problem, and in doing so, to determine if they perceive that the situation constitutes an environmental injustice for Alaska Natives. The interview transcripts were analyzed using five sub-frames of the environmental justice framework: distributive justice, procedural justice, indigenous rights, corrective justice, and ecological sustainability. The interview …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

McCloy, Daniel, M.A., December 2006 Linguistics Automated Adaptation Between Kiranti Languages Chairperson: Dr. Anthony Mattina Minority language communities that are seeking to develop their language may be hampered by a lack of vernacular materials. Large volumes of such materials may be available in a related language. Automated adaptation holds potential to enable these large volumes of materials to be efficiently translated into the resource-scarce language. I describe a project to assess the feasibility of automatically adapting text between Limbu and Yamphu, two languages in Nepal’s Kiranti grouping. The approaches taken—essentially a transfer-based system partially hybridized with a Kiranti-specific interlingua—are placed …

Jackson G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the largest family of integral membrane receptors. They mediate diverse cell signaling pathways and therefore are currently the target for 50% of all prescribed drugs. Cells utilize these receptors to transduce extracellular stimuli across the plasma membrane and activate intracellular G proteins, which then initiate second messenger system cascades. GPCR signaling is the focus of much research. One member of this large family of membrane receptors is the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR). …

Differences Of Dna-Transcription Factor Interactions Following Chromium Exposure, Kathryn Louise Mintz Jan 2006

Differences Of Dna-Transcription Factor Interactions Following Chromium Exposure, Kathryn Louise Mintz

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The effect of 8-oxoguanine in the consensus sequence of êB DNA on the binding affinity of p50BD was determined using a 22-mer and a 30-mer double-stranded DNA oligonucleotide containing the NF-êB binding site. The addition of a carboxyl moiety at position 8 on guanine (creating 8-oxoguanine) was observed to change the binding affinity of the transcription factor for the êB DNA sequences at each modified guanine site. The protocol used a p50 binding domain protein (residues 23 to 366 from the p50 protein) and a p50 mutant protein with a single amino acid mutation of the wild type histidine 67 …
