A Small Rna Regulates Rpos In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Meghan Catherine Lybecker Jan 2007

A Small Rna Regulates Rpos In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Meghan Catherine Lybecker

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

We have identified and characterized the first sRNA, DsrABb, in the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi; as well as, identified a non-canonical RNA chaperone Hfq. The alternative sigma factor RpoS (sigma 38 or sigma S) plays a central role in the reciprocal regulation of the virulence-associated major outer surface proteins OspC and OspA. Temperature is one of the key environmental signals controlling RpoS, but the molecular mechanism by which the signal is transduced remains unknown. DsrABb post-transcriptionally regulates the alternative sigma factor RpoS in response to an increase in temperature, associated with the tick to mammal transmission signal. A …

Community Forestry Education In The Swan Valley, Mt: Contributions Of Northwest Connections' Field Program, Joanna Elizabeth Seibert

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As the community forestry movement matures, a question remains regarding what kind of educational experience nurtures and inspires people in community forestry? This thesis seeks to contribute to a better understanding of community forestry education by examining a field educational program known as “Landscape and Livelihood” (LL) offered by Northwest Connections, a small community-based conservation organization in the upper Swan Valley of western Montana. Based on extensive interviews, observation and the author’s own personal experience as a former LL student, the thesis documents the program’s use of field ecological studies involving both scientific and local knowledge integrated with journaling, homestays, …

Feminist Theories Of Autonomy And Their Implications For Rape Law Reform, Beth Ann Headley Jan 2007

Feminist Theories Of Autonomy And Their Implications For Rape Law Reform, Beth Ann Headley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Liberal notions of autonomy have shaped our laws, and perhaps more importantly, the way we think about ourselves. In this paper, I discuss various theories of autonomy, and their problems—specifically their implications for understanding human subjects and their experiences. I am particularly concerned with the role of gender in these theories, and want to know whether women’s autonomy is meaningfully different than men’s autonomy—that is, if gender inequality significantly influences or determines women’s actual choices. In chapter one, I discuss Joel Feinberg’s liberal theory of autonomy, which describes an unhindered, self-governing agent, free to pursue his or her own goals. …

Achieving Environmental Justice For The Community Of Opportunity, Montana: An Assessment Of Superfund Concerns, Kathleen A. Hasenbank Jan 2007

Achieving Environmental Justice For The Community Of Opportunity, Montana: An Assessment Of Superfund Concerns, Kathleen A. Hasenbank

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The community of Opportunity, Montana, is surrounded by an area many consider to be the largest Superfund site in the United States. The nearby Opportunity Ponds is a major consolidation area for mining-related contaminated wastes in the state of Montana, and Opportunity residents have voiced concerns about their well water, windblown dust, and other issues since at least the late 1990s. Furthermore, the community has been subjected to ongoing environmental injustices: they feel they have been left to bear an unfair environmental burden without compensation and feel left out of important decision-making processes that affect them. I have …

Boomtown To Outdoor Museum: An Examination Of Nevada City, Montana, For Placement On The National Register Of Historic Places, Lara Briann Feider

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis presents a study of Nevada City, Montana to examine the eligibility potential for a historic district nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Founded in 1863, Nevada City experienced a gold mining heyday from 1863-1869. As easily attainable placers diminished and strikes were reported elsewhere, the town was nearly abandoned. Many of the remaining buildings were demolished, used for firewood, or salvaged by Nevada City's remaining residents. Senator Charles Bovey began preservation work in 1944 at nearby Virginia City, Montana. Bovey had already amassed several buildings and countless artifacts that he had on display at the …

Beyond Organic: Defining Alternatives To Usda Certified Organic, Jennifer Ann Von Sehlen Jan 2007

Beyond Organic: Defining Alternatives To Usda Certified Organic, Jennifer Ann Von Sehlen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since the inception of the National Organic Program (NOP) housed within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the substantial growth of the organic food market has garnered both enthusiasm and criticism. While large farm operations and food companies boast a significant reduction in the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers as a result of more crop land being converted to organic production, small-scale organic farmers are feeling the financial pinch as industry takes over the once niche market. The USDA has received much criticism for defining organic in a way that appears to favor special interests, including industrial-size organic …

Change, Principal Trust And Enabling School Structures: An Analysis Of Relationships In Southern Alberta Schools, Cheryl Anne Gilmore Jan 2007

Change, Principal Trust And Enabling School Structures: An Analysis Of Relationships In Southern Alberta Schools, Cheryl Anne Gilmore

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Improved student learning continues to be a pressing issue compelling schools and districts to undergo change. Schools are complex organizations and there are a number of interrelated factors that contribute to the success or failure of change into a new model. In Alberta, organizational change was mandated in 2003 through government acceptance of a Commission’s recommendation that all schools operate as a professional learning community. The context of mandated change provided a unique opportunity to examine large scale change with factors that may have a relationship to successful change. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship …

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Borderline Personality Disorder, Christopher S. Miller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the current study, participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) displayed deficits in neuropsychological functioning when compared with healthy controls. Participants with BPD performed worse on all measures of cognitive functioning: attention, verbal memory, processing speed and a measure of general neuropsychological functioning. The study found that depression was significantly more prevalent in the BPD sample compared with the control sample and that there was a significant inverse correlation between level of depression and scores on a general index of neuropsychological functioning. Results from ANCOVA analyses revealed significant differences existed in neuropsychological performance on all four measures of cognitive functioning …

Pilot Study On The Prediction Of Heart Rot In Apparently Sound Western Larch, Angela Daenzer Jan 2007

Pilot Study On The Prediction Of Heart Rot In Apparently Sound Western Larch, Angela Daenzer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since many cavity-excavating birds require trees with heart rot, managers routinely emphasize decayed trees in their snag retention prescriptions. Where too few trees are present with obvious indicators of decay, apparently sound trees are left to meet retention objectives. These trees may also contain decay, and may offer advantages in longevity and protection over more extensively decayed trees. Better information regarding conditions and heartwood decay-causing fungi important to heart rot in apparently sound trees would aid in retention decisions. We combined data from the 2003 Westside Reservoir and Roberts Fire burns with data from the USFS Forest Health Protection’s 10-year …

Bishopness, Lauren Goodwin Slaughter Jan 2007

Bishopness, Lauren Goodwin Slaughter

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The publication of "Edgar Allen Poe & the Juke-Box" modifies Elizabeth Bishop’s established oeuvre in ways that demonstrate the anxiety throughout her work regarding the concealment of sexual difference—a concealment she often takes part in. As the poems reveal, by putting emphasis on particular kinds of clothing, Bishop emphasizes the necessary—but flawed—methods for that concealment. Black stockings, gloves, sailors hats, and other garments of traditional gender representation work as useful metaphors, symbolically engaging the construction of the literary image accepted in the academy which has produced the unified notion of “Bishopness” some critics still wish to uphold. When themes of …

Reading Placelessness And Suburbanization In Richard Yates, Darcy Anne Feder Jan 2007

Reading Placelessness And Suburbanization In Richard Yates, Darcy Anne Feder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The themes of suburbanization and placelessness arise in many of Yates’ novels, exposing the continuing pattern of “conformity at any price” which accompanied the rapidly-changing era of post-World War II America. As suburbanization began to take its toll on the American landscape, a new, increasingly placeless environment started to emerge; endless subdivisions of identical houses, commercial strip developments, shopping centers, and movie plazas sprang up, places which not only looked alike, but felt alike. A cultural shift accompanied this changing environment, one which embraced a new “domestic ideal” of the suburban family, an image constantly reinforced through the media of …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Year of the Snake is a travel narrative and family memoir that details a year of the author’s life as a Fulbright scholar in Vietnam. Twenty-five years after the author’s parents have fled Vietnam as war refugees, the author returns to her parents’ homeland. The author spends 2001 exploring and examining this forsaken homeland. She has three distinct experiences, as a student living with my uncle as his adopted daughter, as a backpacker exhilarated by the culture and land, and as a privileged ex-pat working among locals. Through these varied experiences, I began to see how Vietnam was trying to …

A Revision Of Family And Domesticity In Michael Cunningham's A Home At The End Of The World, Flesh And Blood, And The Hours, Tracy Joy Struck Jan 2007

A Revision Of Family And Domesticity In Michael Cunningham's A Home At The End Of The World, Flesh And Blood, And The Hours, Tracy Joy Struck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Primarily through the experiences of his gay protagonists, Michael Cunningham critiques the heteronormative nuclear family structure of the 1950s and depicts alternatives to it. Drawing on the work of feminist critics who focus on the political intent of American women authors during the nineteenth century, the findings of family historians who examine families of the 1950s, and the work of anthropologist Kath Weston, I argue that Michael Cunningham represents domesticity in ways that promote readers' appreciation of and support for alternative family models.

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray Jan 2007

The Shield Bearing Warriors Of Bear Gulch: A Look At Prehistoric Warrior Identity In Rock Art And Places Of Power, Melissa Marie Ray

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Centuries ago prehistoric warriors carved and painted their identities on the sandstone cliffs of Bear Gulch 24FR002. Bear Gulch is the premier shield bearing warrior site on the Northern Plains; in fact it holds the most shield bearing warriors known on the Northern Plains at a single site. Shield bearing warrior consists of an anthropomorph with a shield for a body, a head, feet, and weapons or flags protruding out from behind the shield. At Bear Gulch there are elaborate headdresses, flags, shields, weapons, bustles, and wolf tail moccasins. Many of these elements are only found in the ethnographic literature …

Teacher Efficacy In The Implementation Of New Curriculum Supported By Professional Development, Douglas Shields Bennett Jan 2007

Teacher Efficacy In The Implementation Of New Curriculum Supported By Professional Development, Douglas Shields Bennett

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A large body of literature regarding professional development and its effects on teaching and student achievement and learning has emerged over the last decade. There are many teachers who either have limited access to professional development activities or who have access and choose not to take part in professional development activities. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological tradition in describing the "lived experiences" of participants involved in the implementation of new curriculum. Fourteen teachers and seven principals were purposefully selected to be part of this study in a rural school jurisdiction in southern Alberta. Through a qualitative analysis, this study …

The Effects Of Forest Fires On Runoff Rates: The Role Of Duff Removal And Surface Sealing By Vegetative Ash, Western Montana, Victoria Balfour Jan 2007

The Effects Of Forest Fires On Runoff Rates: The Role Of Duff Removal And Surface Sealing By Vegetative Ash, Western Montana, Victoria Balfour

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Increases in runoff and erosion following a forest fire are often attributed to the removal of the surface duff and litter, the formation water repellent soils, and surface sealing. There has been considerable work on the influence of water repellency on post-fire runoff, however few studies have addressed the hydrologic importance of litter and duff consumption and surface sealing. To further understand these processes, six controlled burns were conducted within Lubrecht Experimental Forest, Western Montana. Three of the study sites were situated on a granitic sandy loam soil formed from quartz monzonite, with Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and Douglas fir …

Role Of Sodium Arsenite In Atherogenesis, Flavia Elias Pereira Jan 2007

Role Of Sodium Arsenite In Atherogenesis, Flavia Elias Pereira

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Epidemiological studies as well as controlled animal studies have associated exposure to arsenic through drinking water with the development of atherosclerosis. In this study, we have shown for the first time that low and environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic accelerate atherogenesis. The objective of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of arsenic-induced atherosclerosis by (1) characterizing the time- and concentration-dependent effects of sodium arsenite [As(III)] on the development of atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- /LDLr-/- mice, (2) determining whether As(III)-induced peroxynitrite activates protein kinase C (PKC) isotypes, α and β, in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and (3) determining the effects …

Maternal Effects And Sexual Selection In The Heliconia Bug, Leptoscelis Tricolor (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Christine Whitney Miller Jan 2007

Maternal Effects And Sexual Selection In The Heliconia Bug, Leptoscelis Tricolor (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Christine Whitney Miller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The early environment experienced by organisms can have significant phenotypic effects that persist throughout life. Parents, mothers in particular, commonly determine these early environments. Maternal effects, or the influence of maternal phenotypes on offspring phenotypes, are therefore likely ubiquitous in natural populations. However, the frequency and evolutionary consequences of maternal effects are largely unknown. Here I show that maternal phenotypes can have large effects on offspring morphology, fecundity, and behavior. I theoretically explore the potential for these effects to resolve the long-standing "lek paradox" in the field of sexual selection. I also empirically investigate these effects in the heliconia bug, …

The Tongue River Bison Jump (24rb2135): The Technological Organization Of Late Prehistoric Period Hunter-Gatherers In Southeastern Montana, Joseph Shawn Hamilton Jan 2007

The Tongue River Bison Jump (24rb2135): The Technological Organization Of Late Prehistoric Period Hunter-Gatherers In Southeastern Montana, Joseph Shawn Hamilton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Bison hunting has long been recognized as a key element of the lifeways of American Indians of the Northwestern Plains. Bison served as an integral component for food, shelter, tools, and clothing. It is no surprise that the importance bison hunting, as a socioeconomic institution, is revealed in the archaeological record of this region. A study of the material culture, most often lithic tools, found at prehistoric bison kills and processing sites allows archaeologists to draw inferences about the technology associated with the procurement of such vital animals. An investigation of bison jump, trap or pound lithic assemblage can provide …

Partnership, Dependence And Protest: The United States And El Salvador, Seen Through Pockets Of Internationals, Paul Brohaugh

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

El Salvador is intimately connected to the United States, though most U.S. citizens may not realize it, even if they remember the days of El Salvador’s civil war. As it is for much of the world, the United States is for Salvadorans a promised land of plentiful work and peaceful lives. Unlike the rest of the world, however, every Salvadoran has a fighting chance to get here, and a fourth of the population has done so. Salvadoran news in the United States is mostly limited to updates on youth gangs and violence. Violence was the media draw of the 1980s …

Public Relations In Nonprofit Organizations: A Guide To Establishing Public Relations Programs In Nonprofit Settings, Megan Kate Gale Jan 2007

Public Relations In Nonprofit Organizations: A Guide To Establishing Public Relations Programs In Nonprofit Settings, Megan Kate Gale

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Public relations has become an increasingly popular topic in the nonprofit community, and the demand for developing piblic relations as a core competency has increased as well. Since many nonprofit organization have limited time and resources for developing fuull-scale public relations programs, many rely on information obtained during one-day workshops or conference presentations presented by public relations professionals who have little or no experience with the concerns of the nonprofit setting. Using a program planning model, this paper describes how nonprofit organizations can increase the capacity and effectiveness of their public relations efforts by building relationships with key stakeholders.
