Faculty Scholarship

Interzone/cavitation are key steps in early stage joint formation that have not been successfully developed in vitro. Further, current models of endochondral ossification, an important step in early bone formation, lack key morphology morphological structures such as microcavities found during development in vivo. This is possibly due to the lack of appropriate strategies for incorporating chemical and mechanical stimuli that are thought to be involved in joint development. We designed a bioreactor system and investigated the synergic effect of chemical stimuli (chondrogenesis-inducing [CIM] and hypertrophy-inducing medium [HIM]) and mechanical stimuli (flexion) on the growth of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) …

Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta Sep 2024

Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta

Faculty Scholarship

Understanding the causes of the ~90 ppmv atmospheric CO2 swings between glacial and interglacial climates is an important open challenge in paleoclimate research. Although the regularity of the glacial-interglacial cycles hints at a single driving mechanism, Earth System models require many independent physical and biological processes to explain the full observed CO2 signal. Here we show that biologically sequestered carbon in the ocean can explain an atmospheric CO2 change of 75 ± 40 ppmv, based on a mass balance calculation using published carbon isotopic measurements. An analysis of the carbon isotopic signatures of different water masses indicates similar regenerated carbon …

All You Need Is Unary: End-To-End Bit-Stream Processing In Hyperdimensional Computing, Mehran Shoushtari Moghadam, M. Hassan Najafi

Faculty Scholarship

Hyperdimensional Computing (HDC) is a brain-inspired computing paradigm introduced to achieve energy efficiency with a lightweight and single-pass training model. Hypervectors (HVs) at the heart of the HDC systems play a fundamental role in elevating the accuracy and obtaining the desired performance. Image-based HV encoding requires two types of HVs: Position and Level HVs. State-of-the-art approaches utilize pseudo-random methods for generating these HVs, which might degrade system performance and cause higher power consumption due to poor randomness in HV generation. These conventional methods require iteratively calculating orthogonal Positional HVs for acceptable accuracy. This work proposes a fast, ultra-lightweight, and high-quality …

Faculty Scholarship

Excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle myofibers depends upon Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum through the ryanodine receptor/Ca2+-release channel RyR1. The RyR1 contains ∼100 Cys thiols of which ∼30 comprise an allosteric network subject to posttranslational modification by S-nitrosylation, S-palmitoylation and S-oxidation. However, the role and function of these modifications is not understood. Although aberrant S-nitrosylation of multiple unidentified sites has been associated with dystrophic diseases, malignant hyperthermia and other myopathic syndromes, S-nitrosylation in physiological situations is reportedly specific to a single (1 of ∼100) Cys in RyR1, Cys3636 in a manner gated by pO2. Using mice expressing a form …

Faculty Scholarship

Successive matching-to-sample (S-MTS) with a go/no-go response requirement has previously produced equivalence classes with nonverbal auditory stimuli among college students. When participants are required to talk aloud during posttests (protocol analysis), their verbal behavior tends to match their selection performance. However, in some cases, the protocol analysis seems to interfere with posttests, in that equivalence yields are lower when participants are required to talk aloud. Thus, the current study replicated and extended previous research by requiring participants to complete emergence posttests before introducing training for the protocol analysis. Subsequently, participants completed one additional block of the transitivity/equivalence posttest with the …
