Bakhtin's Dialogism And The Corrective Rhetoric Of The Johannine Misunderstanding Dialogue: Exposing Seven Crises In The Johannine Situation (Chapter, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
One of the most fascinating thinkers and literary theorists within the last century is the late Russian form critic Mikhail Bakhtin, whose theory of dialogism seeks to account for several levels of dialectical tension and interplay in great literature. On one level, Bakhtin observes the “heteroglossic” character of language. Between its centrifugal uses in popularistic culture and the centripetal actions of philologists and grammarians attempting to standardize meanings and associations, living language is always in a state of flux. On another level, Bakhtin suggests that discourse is always “polyphonic.” Because meanings reverberate against each other upon their utterance, transmission, and …

Quakers And Coercion In A World Of Good And Evil (Chapter Eleven In Good And Evil: Quaker Perspectives), Phil Smith
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "When is it right to force someone to do something?
Real evil exists in the world. We recognize it in the selfish and cruel actions of other people, and if we are honest we admit at least the possibility of evil in our own actions. Sometimes we have the power, we think, to stop evildoers. But since we recognize the potential for doing evil ourselves, we worry that our efforts to stop the injustice of others will themselves be unjust. Whether wickedly or unwittingly, our fight against evil might just produce more evil."

On Guessing Points And Naming Stars: Epistemological Origins Of John’S Christological Tensions (Chapter In The Gospel Of St. John And Christian Theology), Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Theological and biblical studies have historically developed hand in hand, and John’s distinctive Christology has long been at the center of that relationship. Within John the humanity and divinity of Jesus converge, as do the Son’s equality with — and subordination to — the Father. Likewise, embellished and existentialized appraisals of Jesus’ signs, present and futuristic eschatology, universalistic and particularistic soteriology, pro- and anti-Jewish sentiments, and apparent free-will and deterministic motifs pervade the Johannine text among other tensions as well. From the patristic era to the modern age, John’s christological tensions have intrigued and challenged theologians and exegetes alike. Indeed, …

Interfluential, Formative, And Dialectical - A Theory Of John's Relation To The Synoptics (Part Iii Of The Fourth Gospel And The Quest For Jesus: Modern Foundations Reconsidered), Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
While John's tradition is pervasively autonomous and independent of the Synoptics, the Johannine tradition shows evidence of engagement with various aspects of the Synoptic Gospels and traditions. Multiple non-identical similarities with Mark suggest an 'interfluential' set of relationships between the preMarkan and the early Johannine tradition. At least three dozen times Luke departs from Mark and sides with John, suggesting that Luke has drawn from the Johannine tradition, probably within John's oral stages of development. Even Q shows evidence of Johannine influence, and this fact demands investigation. Matthean and Johannine traditions appear to have engaged similar issues related to their …

Aspects Of Historicity In The Gospel Of John: Implications For Investigations Of Jesus And Archaeology, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Of the many tensions characterizing the Gospel of John, one of its perplexities most needing to be addressed critically is the set of issues related to aspects of historicity.1 On one hand, John is the most spiritual, theological, and symbolic of the canonical Gospels, leading scholars in recent decades to take seriously the literary features of the work. On the other hand, there is more archaeological, topographical, and apparently historical material in John than in any other Gospel, or even in all three combined.

An Empirical Look At The Ecumenical Diaconate In The United States, Benjamin L. Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The growth of interest in the "escalating phenomenon" of the diaconate in a number of denominations- predominantly in the North Atlantic region - has been well-documented in ecumenical dialogues, denominational reports, and scholarly publications. A number of articles have placed the diaconate in the larger context of ecclesiological reflection, but an accurate picture of the practical reality of individual deacons and their perceptions about their ministry has rarely been examined beyond anecdotal evidence? A better picture of the views and experiences of deacons is vital for at least two reasons. First, it is necessary to support ecumenical cooperation in the …

Salvation And Sociology In The Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Movement, Benjamin Hartley
Salvation And Sociology In The Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Movement, Benjamin Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Rather than being an American innovation which was spread to missionary contexts abroad, the deaconess movement in the Methodist Episcopal Church began on the Methodist missionary frontiers of India and Germany in the late 19th century. The appeals to General Conference in April 1888 to establish the office of deaconess originated in the Bengal Conference in India and the Rock River Conference in Illinois. Bishop James Thoburn, a well-known missionary from India, led the petitions through the intricacies of the General Conference with the urging of his missionary sister, Isabella Thoburn, who had recently joined forces with Chicago's Lucy …
