Mindfulness, Self-Inquiry, And Artmaking, Mark Graham, Rebecca Lewis Jan 2021

Mindfulness, Self-Inquiry, And Artmaking, Mark Graham, Rebecca Lewis

Faculty Publications

This article describes a qualitative study of pre-service art education students that was designed to explore relationships between mindfulness, self-inquiry, and artistic practices. The researchers, who are art educators, were curious about how mindfulness practices might connect, overlap or influence the personal artistic practice of the participants. Although mindfulness is often used as an intervention to counter the stresses of school and teaching, mindfulness can also be thought of as a counter cultural phenomenon that explores possibilities of a critical pedagogy. While mindfulness and self-care practices can have important positive benefits and may lead to deeper personal understanding, these practices …

Sibling Relationship Quality In The Context Of Digital Leisure And Geographic Distance For College-Attending Emerging Adults, Eric K. Layland, Jerrica O. Peets, Camilla Hodge, Mikala Glasa Jan 2021

Sibling Relationship Quality In The Context Of Digital Leisure And Geographic Distance For College-Attending Emerging Adults, Eric K. Layland, Jerrica O. Peets, Camilla Hodge, Mikala Glasa

Faculty Publications

During the transition to adulthood, emerging adults may experience new geographic distance separating them from their siblings. Digital leisure is common among emerging adults and may serve as a tool for maintaining relationship quality across geographic distance. Using qualitative data, we created individual digital leisure diversity scores for four categories of digital leisure identified from a constructed taxonomy. The sample included 185 college-attending emerging adults (Mage ¼ 20.1, 64.3% male). Analysis of variance indicated dyadic gender differences in social media and gaming. Digital leisure diversity was associated with greater levels of affective and cognitive sibling relationship quality, regardless of sibling …

Crowdfunding Deception Perception: What Makes Would-Be Contributors Perceive Fakeness In Crowdfunding Campaigns?, James Gaskin, Mark J. Keith, Thomas O. Meservy, Nathan W. Twyman, Taylor M. Wells

Faculty Publications

This study illuminates the signals that cause contributors to perceive realness and fakeness in a crowdfunding campaign. A grounded theory approach involving 818 human evaluations of 225 COVID-19-related charitable crowdfunding campaigns identified the validity of the campaign’s stated need, its descriptive detail and writing quality, and having a reputable campaign sponsor as important signals of realness and/or deception, as well as other factors. Commonly used NLP measures have heavy overlap with these reported signals, but by themselves reflect roughly half of the variance explained. Crowdfunding platforms can use this information to help campaign organizers improve public perceptions.

Making The Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Mindset Indispensable In The Lis Classroom Through Design, Content, Communication, And Assessment, Kim M. Thompson, Clayton A. Copeland

Faculty Publications

When we incorporate diversity and inclusion into Library and Information Science course design and content and build communication and learning frameworks in the classroom on inclusive principles, we build a cohort of students who cannot “unsee” these basic principles as they engage in practice. By designing lecture and activity materials that allow students to read and engage with different perspectives about professional values and content, we create opportunities for awareness building and prepare students to engage with the same practices as they join the profession. This chapter provides insights for and examples of how to create courses that bring diversity, …

Faculty Publications

The relationship between political affiliations and diet-related discussions on social media has not been studied on a population level. This study used a cost- and -time effective framework to leverage, aggregate, and analyze data from social media. This paper enhances our understanding of diet-related discussions with respect to political orientations in U.S. states. This mixed methods study used computational methods to collect tweets containing “diet” or “#diet” shared in a year, identified tweets posted by U.S. Twitter users, disclosed topics of tweets, and compared democratic, republican, and swing states based on the weight of topics. A qualitative method was employed …

Privacy needs and stigma pose significant barriers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people sharing information related to their identities in traditional settings and research methods such as surveys and interviews. Fortunately, social media facilitates people’s belonging to and exchanging information within online LGBT communities. Compared to heterosexual respondents, LGBT users are also more likely to have accounts on social media websites and access social media daily. However, the current relevant LGBT studies on social media are not efficient or assume that any accounts that utilize LGBT-related words in their profile belong to individuals who identify as LGBT. Our …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Sexual Harassment Studies With Text Mining, Amir Karami, Melek Yildiz Spinel, C. Nicole White, Kayla Ford, Suzanne Swan

Faculty Publications

Sexual harassment has been the topic of thousands of research articles in the 20th and 21st centuries. Several review papers have been developed to synthesize the literature about sexual harassment. While traditional literature review studies provide valuable insights, these studies have some limitations including analyzing a limited number of papers, being time-consuming and labor-intensive, focusing on a few topics, and lacking temporal trend analysis. To address these limitations, this paper employs both computational and qualitative approaches to identify major research topics, explore temporal trends of sexual harassment topics over the past few decades, and point to future possible directions in …

Covid-19 Vaccine And Social Media In The U.S.: Exploring Emotions And Discussions On Twitter, Amir Karami, Michael Zhu, Bailey Goldschmidt, Hannah R. Boyajieff, Mahdi M. Najafabadi

Faculty Publications

The understanding of the public response to COVID-19 vaccines is the key success factor to control the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand the public response, there is a need to explore public opinion. Traditional surveys are expensive and time-consuming, address limited health topics, and obtain small-scale data. Twitter can provide a great opportunity to understand public opinion regarding COVID-19 vaccines. The current study proposes an approach using computational and human coding methods to collect and analyze a large number of tweets to provide a wider perspective on the COVID-19 vaccine. This study identifies the sentiment of tweets using a machine learning …

Planning And Evaluating Policy To Address Information Inequalities: An Information Worlds Matrix Approach, Kim M. Thompson Jan 2021

Planning And Evaluating Policy To Address Information Inequalities: An Information Worlds Matrix Approach, Kim M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

One objective of public policy is to solve social problems and often it is through policy that digital inclusion efforts enter our information society. Digital technologies can help accelerate progress in fighting poverty, hunger and ill-health, in improving educational outcomes and in reducing gender and other inequalities. Digital inclusion is a means to empower underserved and marginalized populations. Policy related to digital inclusion often starts with building infrastructure and providing affordable access to information and communication technologies such as through phone connections, broadband, computers in classrooms or a computer (i.e., smartphone) in every pocket. But how can we know whether …

Requiem For A Lightweight: How Ncaa Continues To Distort Antitrust Doctrine, Alan J. Meese Jan 2021

Requiem For A Lightweight: How Ncaa Continues To Distort Antitrust Doctrine, Alan J. Meese

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court speaks rarely about the meaning of the Sherman Act. When the Court does speak, its pronouncements have particular resonance and staying power among jurists, scholars, and enforcers. NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma was such a case. There the Court assessed agreements reducing the output and increasing the prices of televised college football games. After announcing that restraints imposed by sports leagues are exempt from per se condemnation, the Court went on to invalidate the challenged agreements under the rule of reason because they produced significant economic harm without offsetting benefits. In so …

Detecting Noncompliant Behavior In Organizations: How Online Survey Responses And Behaviors Reveal Risk, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Jospeh S. Valacich, Aaron F. Zimbelman, Mark F. Zimbelman Jan 2021

Detecting Noncompliant Behavior In Organizations: How Online Survey Responses And Behaviors Reveal Risk, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Jospeh S. Valacich, Aaron F. Zimbelman, Mark F. Zimbelman

Faculty Publications

Ensuring organizational regulatory and legal compliance is a challenging, high-stakes management task. Overlooking or underestimating noncompliance in organizations can result in substantial fines, damage to a company’s reputation, and, ultimately, loss of business. To help alleviate this risk, we explore whether organizations can assess noncompliance by monitoring users’ answers and related mouse cursor movements in an intelligent online questionnaire. Namely, we propose that noncompliant (compared with compliant) individuals will experience more cognitive dissonance on questions about (1) what constitutes noncompliance behavior and (2) what consequences for noncompliance are appropriate. We predict that increased cognitive dissonance in noncompliant individuals will influence …

Mother Goose As A Resource In Teaching Historical Linguistics, Dallin D. Oaks Jan 2021

Mother Goose As A Resource In Teaching Historical Linguistics, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

Mother Goose and other nursery rhymes as authentic texts are valuable resources that can be used effectively to illustrate historical English language change. Even though these nursery rhymes contain some forms, structures, and word meanings that differ from the language of today, the texts are sufficiently recent that they are intelligible to modern audiences. This article will illustrate the relevance and usefulness of nursery rhymes in teaching about principles of language and language change, such as voicing, phonological processes, factors motivating phonological change, as well as actual changes in the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and lexicon of English.

Person-Marking In Máku, Chris Rogers Ph.D. Jan 2021

Person-Marking In Máku, Chris Rogers Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

In Máku (an extinct language isolate), person marking is encoded by pronominal elements that are attached to bound pronominal roots, possessed nouns, and as subject and object argument agreement reference on verbs. However, when the contrasts between the various person-markers and their behaviors in the language are considered the system does not fit easily into the traditional analysis of three persons and two numbers. Rather, the organization of and relationships between the pronominal elements in Máku reveals a system based on the distinction of three persons (first, second and third), a two-way quantitative distinction (singular and non-singular), and a two-way …

Reimagining Civil Case Management, Paula Hannaford-Agor Jan 2021

Reimagining Civil Case Management, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

Court rules are necessary, but insufficient by themselves to address problems of cost and delay. Instead, state courts today are embracing a considerably broader view of civil case management, one that encompasses the total constellation of court rules, business practices, culture and governance, and staffing and technology infrastructure. Effective case management now recognizes the importance of five core components that are necessary to achieve timely, cost-effective, and procedurally fair justice: (1) triage to ensure that cases receive attention proportional to their needs; (2) process simplification to remove procedural barriers that unnecessarily complicate litigation; (3) stakeholder engagement to ensure clear communication …

What’S The Church’S Official Position On Official Positions?: Grappling With “Truth” And “Authority”, Trevan Hatch

Faculty Publications

In the previous essay, Dr. Rabbi Peter Haas considered how some of our Jewish friends have approached the issue of authority in their search for truth. During my engagement with such approaches as a student at Baltimore Hebrew University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago, I have wondered how this approach might inform my own quest for truth within the context of my faith tradition. As a Latter-day Saint, what authorities should I consult? Where do I turn for truth? How can I know whether a certain claim is an “official position” of …

The Effect Of Help Seeking On Creative Self- Efficacy Of Is Students, Cherileigh Leavitt, Madison Corbin, Mark J. Keith, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Degan Kettles, Greg Anderson

Faculty Publications

Research has demonstrated that student help-seeking behaviors have a variety of positive influences in the classroom. However, the primary outcome of these studies is typically student grades and general self-efficacy. To make a contribution to the IS discipline, we expand this research with a more targeted and specific measure of self-efficacy that was created for IS students: creative self-efficacy (CreaSE) in the IS discipline. This allows us to relate specific help-seeking behaviors to CreaSE sub-constructs which, in turn, allows us to make more targeted recommendations to instructors in IS programs who want to improve the quality and retention of their …

Team Building Through Team Video Games: Randomized Controlled Trial, Mark J. Keith, Douglas L. Dean, James Gaskin, Greg Anderson

Faculty Publications

Background: Organizations of all types require the use of teams. Poor team member engagement costs billions of US dollars annually.

Objective: This study aimed to explain how team building can be accomplished with team video gaming based on a team cohesion model enhanced by team flow theory.

Methods: In this controlled experiment, teams were randomly assigned to a team video gaming treatment or a control treatment. Team productivity was measured during both pretreatment and posttreatment team tasks. After the pretest, teams who were involved in the team video gaming treatment competed against other teams by playing the Halo or Rock …

Evasive Entrepreneurship: Circumventing And Exploiting Institutional Impediments For New Profit Opportunity In An Emerging Market, Nnaoke Ufere, James Gaskin Jan 2021

Evasive Entrepreneurship: Circumventing And Exploiting Institutional Impediments For New Profit Opportunity In An Emerging Market, Nnaoke Ufere, James Gaskin

Faculty Publications

Evasive entrepreneurship (circumvention and exploitation of institutions by entrepreneurs) is a prevalent practice in many developing economies. Extant literature on the topic falls short of providing adequate theories to explain its triggers, mechanisms, and consequences. Leveraging extensive survey data from the World Bank, we used structural equation modeling to examine the relationship between evasive entrepreneurial behavior—tax evasion and bribery—and the relative payoff of such practices. Of the 2599 Nigerian entrepreneurs in our sample, the majority admitted to engaging in evasive entrepreneurship. The data suggest that institutional factors thought to constrain entrepreneurship in emerging markets are counter-intuitively perceived by founders as …

Environmental Protection And Human Rights In The Pandemic, Sarah C. Slinger, Maria Antonia Tigre, Natalia Urzola

Faculty Publications

The Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 took the world by surprise. The virus spread quickly around the globe and death tolls were constantly on the rise at early stages of the pandemic. Although vaccine rollouts have helped halt the number of deaths, inequality in accessing vaccines and effective treatments is still a major issue. From the onset, Covid-19 negatively impacted global well-being and myriad human rights. The present report examines how environmental protection and related human rights have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on link between environmental and human health, this report focuses on ecological human rights. The report …
