Peer review and citation metrics are two means of gauging the value of scientific research, but the lack of publicly available peer review data makes the comparison of these methods difficult. Mathematics can serve as a useful laboratory for considering these questions because as an exact science, there is a narrow range of reasons for citations. In mathematics, virtually all published articles are post-publication reviewed by mathematicians in Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet) and so the data set was essentially the Web of Science mathematics publications from 1993 to 2004. For a decade, especially important articles were singled out in Mathematical Reviews …

Adaptive C0 Interior Penalty Methods For Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman Equations With Cordes Coefficients, Susanne C. Brenner, Ellya L. Kawecki May 2021

Adaptive C0 Interior Penalty Methods For Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman Equations With Cordes Coefficients, Susanne C. Brenner, Ellya L. Kawecki

Faculty Publications

In this paper we conduct a priori and a posteriori error analysis of the C interior penalty method for Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equations, with coefficients that satisfy the Cordes condition. These estimates show the quasi-optimality of the method, and provide one with an adaptive finite element method. In accordance with the proven regularity theory, we only assume that the solution of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation belongs to H . 0 2

We present the systematic spectral analyses of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor during its first ten years of operation. This catalog contains two types of spectra: time-integrated spectral fits and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 2297 GRBs, resulting in a compendium of over 18,000 spectra. The four different spectral models used for fitting the spectra were selected based on their empirical importance to the shape of many GRBs. We describe in detail our procedure and criteria for the analyses, and present the bulk results in the form of parameter distributions both in …

Small, highly absorbing points are randomly present on the surfaces of the main interferometer optics in Advanced LIGO. The resulting nanometer scale thermo-elastic deformations and substrate lenses from these micron-scale absorbers significantly reduce the sensitivity of the interferometer directly though a reduction in the power-recycling gain and indirect interactions with the feedback control system. We review the expected surface deformation from point absorbers and provide a pedagogical description of the impact on power buildup in second generation gravitational wave detectors (dual-recycled Fabry–Perot Michelson interferometers). This analysis predicts that the power-dependent reduction in interferometer performance will significantly degrade maximum stored power …

Many world's large rivers have experienced significant sediment reduction in the past century. However, channel aggradation near the mouth of these rivers may be still occurring or even accelerating, as evidenced by a recent study on the Lowermost Mississippi River. This study aims to investigate whether such a trend exists near the mouth of another large lowland alluvial river, the Atchafalaya River, which enters the Gulf of Mexico via two outlets — the natural mainstem and a man-made straight channel that is shorter and has a much greater slope. The overarching hypothesis is that, despite the reduction in riverine sediment …

Floodplain wetlands of low-gradient rivers are especially sensitive to alteration of hydrologic conditions. Although many studies have investigated changes in downstream hydrologic regimes caused by river dam construction, no study has specifically quantified the long-term effect of altered flood pulse on floodplain wetlands. Such knowledge is needed to develop effective dam operation strategies and plans for downstream wetland protection and restoration. We applied data time series from 1984 to 2018 to delineate the inundation extent of floodplain wetlands during the pre- (1984–2005) and post-dam (2006–2018) periods. Four segments of the 360-km river reach were selected to investigate how inundation frequency …

Reproductive efficiency in livestock is a major driver of sustainable food production. The poorly understood process of ruminant conceptus elongation (a) prerequisites maternal pregnancy recognition, (b) is essential to successful pregnancy establishment, and (c) coincides with a period of significant conceptus mortality. Conceptuses at five key developmental stages between Days 8-16 were recovered and cultured in vitro for 6 h prior to conditioned media analysis by untargeted ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectroscopy. This global temporal biochemical interrogation of the ex situ bovine conceptus unearths two antithetical stage-specific metabolic phenotypes during tubular (metabolically retentive) vs. filamentous (secretory) development. Moreover, the …

The northern Gulf of Mexico has a long history of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination from anthropogenic activities, natural oil seepages, and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. The continental shelf of the same area is a known breeding ground for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). To evaluate PAH-DNA damage, a biomarker for potential cancer risk, we compared skin biopsies collected from Gulf of Mexico sperm whales in 2012 with skin biopsies collected from sperm whales in areas of the Pacific Ocean in 1999-2001. All samples were obtained by crossbow and comprised both epidermis and subcutaneous blubber. To evaluate …

The natural timing devices of organisms, commonly known as biological clocks, are composed of specific complex folding molecules that interact to regulate the circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms, the changes or processes that follow a 24‐h light–dark cycle, while endogenously programmed, are also influenced by environmental factors, especially in sessile organisms such as plants, which can impact ecosystems and crop productivity. Current knowledge of plant clocks emanates primarily from research on Arabidopsis, which identified the main components of the circadian gene regulation network. Nonetheless, there remain critical knowledge gaps related to the molecular components of circadian rhythms in important crop groups, …

Heterotrophic Nitrogen Fixation In Response To Nitrate Loading And Sediment Organic Matter In An Emerging Coastal Deltaic Floodplain Within The Mississippi River Delta Plain, Song Li, Robert R. Twilley, Aixin Hou May 2021

Heterotrophic Nitrogen Fixation In Response To Nitrate Loading And Sediment Organic Matter In An Emerging Coastal Deltaic Floodplain Within The Mississippi River Delta Plain, Song Li, Robert R. Twilley, Aixin Hou

Faculty Publications

Increasing nitrate (NO3−) loading in rivers due to agricultural fertilization alters benthic nitrogen (N) cycling and shifts coastal wetlands from being a net source to net sink of reactive N. Heterotrophic N2 fixation that converts N2 to reactive N is often assumed negligible in eutrophic ecosystems and excluded in coastal N budget evaluations. We investigated N2 fixation and denitrification in response to increasing NO3− loading (0, 10, and 100 μM) and sediment organic matter (OMsediment) concentrations in the emerging Wax Lake Delta. Continuous flow-through incubations with 30N2 addition was applied to measure N2 fixation. The variation …

A finite simple graph Γ determines a quotient PΓ of the pure braid group, called a graphic arrangement group. We analyze homomorphisms of these groups defined by deletion of sets of vertices, using methods developed in prior joint work with R. Randell. We show that, for a K4-free graph Γ, a product of deletion maps is injective, embedding PΓ in a product of free groups. Then PΓ is residually free, torsion-free, residually torsion-free nilpotent, and acts properly on a CAT(0) cube complex. We also show PΓ is of homological finiteness type Fm−1, but not Fm, where m is the number …

Application Of Biochar In Estrogen Hormone-Contaminated And Manure-Affected Soils: Impact On Soil Respiration, Microbial Community And Enzyme Activity, Zhuo Wei, Jim J. Wang, Lisa M. Fultz, Paul White, Changyoon Jeong

Faculty Publications

Biochar as a soil amendment has been proposed for enhancing carbon sequestration and manure-borne hormone contaminant remediation. However, little is known about the ecological risk of biochar application in the soil with hormone contamination. This study investigated the influence of biochar in three manure-impacted soils contaminated with estrogen hormones, natural estrogen 17β-estradiol and synthesized estrogen 17α-ethinylestradiol in a microcosm experiment. Specifically, microbial respiration was periodically determined during microcosm incubation while microbial community phospholipid fatty acids and activities of nutrient (C, N, P, S) cycling related enzymes (β-glucosidase, urease, phosphodiesterase, arylsulfatase) were characterized after the incubation. Results showed that the manure-impacted …

Brazil is the largest consumer of dry edible beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the world, 70% of consumption is of the carioca variety. Although the variety has high yield, it is susceptible to several diseases, among them, anthracnose (ANT) can lead to losses of up to 100% of production. The most effective strategy to overcome ANT, a disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, is the development of resistant cultivars. For that reason, the selection of carioca genotypes resistant to multiple ANT races and the identification of loci/markers associated with genetic resistance are extremely important for the genetic breeding process. …

Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli, Fop) is one of the main fungal soil diseases in common bean. The aim of the present study was to identify genomic regions associated with Fop resistance through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in a Mesoamerican Diversity Panel (MDP) and to identify potential common bean sources of Fop’s resistance. The MDP was genotyped with BARCBean6K_3BeadChip and evaluated for Fop resistance with two different monosporic strains using the root-dip method. Disease severity rating (DSR) and the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), at 21 days after inoculation (DAI), were used for GWAS performed with …

Insecticidal Rna Interference, Thinking Beyond Long Dsrna, Alex S. Flynt

Over 20 years ago double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) was described as the trigger of RNAi interference (RNAi)-based gene silencing. This paradigm has held since, especially for insect biopesticide technologies where dsRNAs, similar to those described in 1998, are used to inhibit gene expression. In the intervening years, investigation of RNAi pathways has revealed the small RNA effectors of RNAi are diverse and rapidly evolving. The rich biology of insect small RNAs suggests potential to use multiple RNAi modes for manipulating gene expression. By exploiting different RNAi pathways, the menu of options for pest control can be expanded and could lead to …

Teaching Leadership In American Law Schools: Why The Pushback?, Martin H. Brinkley

Faculty Publications

In September 2020, I participated in a panel discussion with several other deans at Baylor Law School’s 2020: Vision for Leadership Conference. The subject was “Leadership Programming in Law Schools.”

My assignment was to account for why teaching leadership might meet with resistance from inside law schools, despite widespread agreement that lawyer-leaders have always been and are always likely be critical to the survival of American democracy, as well as our fellow citizens’ hopes of living meaningful, satisfying lives.

This essay endeavors to memorialize and expand on the views I expressed on the panel.

How Responsive Is Saudi New Vehicle Fleet Fuel Economy To Fuel-And Vehicle-Price Policy Levers?, Tamara L. Sheldon, Rubal Dua

Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the drivers of recent improvements in Saudi Arabia's fleet fuel economy for new vehicles including passenger cars and light-duty trucks. Vehicle choice models are estimated using both aggregate new vehicle sales data and disaggregate new vehicle buyer survey data. The estimated models are used to simulate counterfactual policy scenarios. Simulation results suggest that the Saudi gasoline price elasticity of demand for new vehicle fuel economy decreased slightly over recent years, but it is still more elastic than that of the United States. Moreover, the increase in domestic gasoline prices between 2014 and 2016 accounted for 42% of …

A healthy democracy requires trust that people can be impartial in important truth-seeking institutions including journalism, justice, and science. Recently some U.S. elites have adopted alarmingly extreme rhetoric against truth-seekers, denouncing mainstream journalism as fake news, criminal investigations as partisan witch-hunts, climate science as a hoax, and career civil servants as a deep state conspiracy. In response, some news organizations have taken the unusual step of publishing op/eds defending these institutions. Two experiments tested effects of such op/eds. In study 1, participants spent twelve days using a purpose-built news portal containing real, timely news with random assignment to the availability …

We study the processes e+e−→2(π+π−)π0π0π0γ and 2(π+π−)π0π0ηγ in which an energetic photon is radiated from the initial state. The data were collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. About 14 000 and 4700 events, respectively, are selected from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469  fb−1.The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective e+e− center-of-mass energy. The center-of-mass energies range from threshold to 4.5 GeV. From …

No one is immune to life’s challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has made that clear to any doubters and raised the issue of “resilience” into the top tiers of popular news topics. Resilience is the capacity to maintain competent functioning in the face of major life stressors. Since social problems are not going away, how do we create a culture in which children can do well in spite of adverse life experiences? Resilience is not a personality trait that someone is born with, but rather a capacity that develops over time. Think of resilience as a balance with negative life experiences …

We report on the acquisition and modeling of the transient response of a commercial silicon (Si) solar cell using a benchtop pulsed X-ray source. The solar-cell transient output to the X-ray pulses was acquired under the dark and steady-state light illumination to mimic the practical operation of a solar cell under different light illumination levels. A solar-cell circuit model was created to develop a fundamental understanding of the transient current/voltage response of solar cell at read-out circuit level. The model was validated by a good agreement between the simulation and experimental results. It was found that the solar-cell resistance ( …

The geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI), as the world’s first operational geostationary ocean color sensor, is aiming at monitoring short-term and small-scale changes of waters over the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Before assessing its capability of detecting subdiurnal changes of seawater properties, a fundamental understanding of the uncertainties of normalized water-leaving radiance (nLw) products introduced by atmospheric correction algorithms is necessarily required. This paper presents the uncertainties by accessing GOCI-derived nLw products generated by two commonly used operational atmospheric algorithms, the Korea Ocean Satellite Center (KOSC) standard atmospheric algorithm adopted in GOCI Data Processing System (GDPS) and the NASA standard atmospheric …

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods with unique molecular mechanisms for digesting host blood meal while acting as vectors for various pathogens of public health significance. The tick's pharmacologically active saliva plays a fundamental role in modulating the host's immune system for several days to weeks, depending on the tick species. The vector tick has also developed sophisticated molecular mechanisms to serve as a competent vector for pathogens, including the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Evidence is still inadequate concerning tick–rickettsiae–host interactions and saliva-assisted transmission of the pathogen to the mammalian host. Rickettsia parkeri, of the SFG rickettsia, can cause a …

The Deepwater Horizon blowout resulted in the second-largest quantity of chemical dispersants used as a countermeasure for an open water oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Of which, the efficacy of dispersant as a mitigation strategy and its toxic effects on aquatic fauna remains controversial. To enhance our understanding of potential sub-lethal effects of exposure to chemically dispersed-oil, sub-adult red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were continuously exposed to a Corexit 9500: DWH crude oil chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction (CEWAF) for 3-days and transcriptomic responses were assessed in the liver. Differential expressed gene (DEG) analysis demonstrated that 63 …

Current capsule endoscopes and next-generation robotic capsules for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases are complex cyber-physical platforms that must orchestrate complex software and hardware functions. The desired tasks for these systems include visual localization, depth estimation, 3D mapping, disease detection and segmentation, automated navigation, active control, path realization and optional therapeutic modules such as targeted drug delivery and biopsy sampling. Data-driven algorithms promise to enable many advanced functionalities for capsule endoscopes, but real-world data is challenging to obtain. Physically-realistic simulations providing synthetic data have emerged as a solution to the development of data-driven algorithms. In this work, we present …

Aerodynamic Testing And Response Evaluation Of A Large-Scale High-Rise Building Model At A High Reynolds Number, Aly Mousaad Aly, Suvash Chapain

Faculty Publications

In this paper, experimental investigations of a large-scale (1:50) high-rise building model are performed at a high Reynolds number (~21 million), to evaluate the wind loads and the corresponding structural responses. A total of 256 pressure taps are mapped on all sides of the building model, to determine dimensionless pressure coefficients on the surfaces. Wind loads at each floor are evaluated using the pressure integration technique. The dynamic properties of the full-scale building are obtained from a finite element model in ANSYS. The wind-induced responses are calculated by applying wind loads on an equivalent lumped mass model of the building …
