Acoustofluidics For Simultaneous Nanoparticle-Based Drug Loading And Exosome Encapsulation, Zeyu Wang, Joseph Rich, Nanjing Hao, Yuyang Gu, Chuyi Chen, Shujie Yang, Peiran Zhang, Tony Jun Huang

Faculty Publications

Nanocarrier and exosome encapsulation has been found to significantly increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery while also minimizing unwanted side effects. However, the development of exosome-encapsulated drug nanocarriers is limited by low drug loading efficiencies and/or complex, time-consuming drug loading processes. Herein, we have developed an acoustofluidic device that simultaneously performs both drug loading and exosome encapsulation. By synergistically leveraging the acoustic radiation force, acoustic microstreaming, and shear stresses in a rotating droplet, the concentration, and fusion of exosomes, drugs, and porous silica nanoparticles is achieved. The final product consists of drug-loaded silica nanocarriers that are encased within an …

Audio-Based Wildfire Detection On Embedded Systems, Hung-Tien Huang, Austin Downey, Jason D. Bakos

Faculty Publications

The occurrence of wildfires often results in significant fatalities. As wildfires are notorious for their high speed of spread, the ability to identify wildfire at its early stage is essential in quickly obtaining control of the fire and in reducing property loss and preventing loss of life. This work presents a machine learning wildfire detecting data pipeline that can be deployed on embedded systems in remote locations. The proposed data pipeline consists of three main steps: audio preprocessing, feature engineering, and classification. Experiments show that the proposed data pipeline is capable of detecting wildfire effectively with high precision and is …

To Stick Or Not To Stick: The Multiple Roles Of Cell Adhesion Molecules In Neural Circuit Assembly, Trevor Moreland, Fabienne E. Poulain Apr 2022

To Stick Or Not To Stick: The Multiple Roles Of Cell Adhesion Molecules In Neural Circuit Assembly, Trevor Moreland, Fabienne E. Poulain

Faculty Publications

Precise wiring of neural circuits is essential for brain connectivity and function. During development, axons respond to diverse cues present in the extracellular matrix or at the surface of other cells to navigate to specific targets, where they establish precise connections with post-synaptic partners. Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) represent a large group of structurally diverse proteins well known to mediate adhesion for neural circuit assembly. Through their adhesive properties, CAMs act as major regulators of axon navigation, fasciculation, and synapse formation. While the adhesive functions of CAMs have been known for decades, more recent studies have unraveled essential, non-adhesive functions …

Zintl Phase Compounds Mg3Sb2-XBiX (X=0, 1, And 2) Monolayers: Electronic, Phonon And Thermoelectric Properties From Ab Initio Calculations, Zheng Chang, Jing Ma, Kunpeng Yuan, Jiongzhi Zheng, Bin Wei, Mohammed Al-Fahdi, Yufei Gao, Xiaoliang Zhang, Hezhu Shao, Ming Hu, Dawei Tang

Faculty Publications

The Mg3Sb2−xBix family has emerged as the potential candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity (KL) at room temperature (RT) and structural complexity. Here, using ab initio calculations of the electron-phonon averaged (EPA) approximation coupled with Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), we have studied electronic, phonon and thermoelectric properties of Mg3Sb2−xBix (x = 0, 1, and 2) monolayers. In violation of common mass-trend expectations, increasing Bi element content with heavier Zintl phase compounds yields an abnormal change in KL in two-dimensional Mg3Sb …

Koh Vs Deionized Water Operation In Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers, Noor Ul Hassan, Yiwei Zheng, Paul A. Kohl, Mustain E. William

Faculty Publications

Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMELs) have recently received significant attention due to their potential advantages over proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMELs). However, some AEMELs feed an aqueous salt solution to the cell where PEMELs typically feed deionized (DI) water. DI water is preferred to keep the system and maintenance costs low. Because of this, many AEMEL researchers report performance both in the salt solution (typically KOH) and DI water. However, the methodology for switching between KOH and DI water is often poorly defined, and it is unclear what impact the residual salt has on cell performance after switching from …

Leaves harvested from kratom [Mitragyna speciosa (Korth.)] have a history of use as a traditional ethnobotanical medicine to combat fatigue and improve work productivity in Southeast Asia. In recent years, increased interest in the application and use of kratom has emerged globally, including North America, for its potential application as an alternative source of medicine for pain management and opioid withdrawal syndrome mitigation. Although the chemistry and pharmacology of major kratom alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, are well documented, foundational information on the impact of plant production environment on growth and kratom alkaloids synthesis is unavailable. To directly address this need, …

Inequality And Cooperation In Social Networks, David Melamed, Brent Simpson, Bradley Montgomery, Vedang Patel Apr 2022

Inequality And Cooperation In Social Networks, David Melamed, Brent Simpson, Bradley Montgomery, Vedang Patel

Faculty Publications

Social networks are fundamental to the broad scale cooperation observed in human populations. But by structuring the flow of benefits from cooperation, networks also create and sustain macro-level inequalities. Here we ask how two aspects of inequality shape the evolution of cooperation in dynamic social networks. Results from a crowdsourced experiment (N = 1080) show that inequality alters the distribution of cooperation within networks such that participants engage in more costly cooperation with their wealthier partners in order to maintain more valuable connections to them. Inequality also influences network dynamics, increasing the tendency for participants to seek wealthier partners, resulting …

High-Mobility Semiconducting Polymers With Different Spin Ground States, Xiao-Xiang Chen, Jia-Tong Li, Yu-Hui Fang, Xin-Yu Deng, Xue-Qing Wang, Guangchao Liu, Yunfei Wang, Xiaodan Gu, Shang-Da Jiang, Ting Lei

Faculty Publications

Organic semiconductors with high-spin ground states are fascinating because they could enable fundamental understanding on the spin-related phenomenon in light element and provide opportunities for organic magnetic and quantum materials. Although high-spin ground states have been observed in some quinoidal type small molecules or doped organic semiconductors, semiconducting polymers with high-spin at their neutral ground state are rarely reported. Here we report three high-mobility semiconducting polymers with different spin ground states. We show that polymer building blocks with small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES-T) could enable small ΔES-T gap and increase the diradical character in copolymers. …

Data Mining And Knowledge Discovery In Chemical Processes: Effect Of Alternative Processing Techniques, Luis A. Briceno-Mena, Miriam Nnadili, Michael G. Benton, Jose A. Romagnoli

Faculty Publications

Data mining and knowledge discovery (DMKD) focuses on extracting useful information from data. In the chemical process industry, tasks such as process monitoring, fault detection, process control, optimization, etc., can be achieved using DMKD. However, the selection of the appropriate method for each step in the DMKD process, namely data cleaning, sampling, scaling, dimensionality reduction (DR), clustering, clustering analysis and data visualization to obtain meaningful insights is far from trivial. In this contribution, a computational environment (FastMan) is introduced and used to illustrate how method selection affects DMKD in chemical process data. Two case studies, using data from a simulated …

A Case Study Of Protecting Bridges Against Overheight Vehicles, Aly Mousaad Aly, Marc Hoffmann Apr 2022

A Case Study Of Protecting Bridges Against Overheight Vehicles, Aly Mousaad Aly, Marc Hoffmann

Faculty Publications

Most transportation departments have recognized and developed procedures to address the ever-increasing weights of trucks traveling on bridges in service today. Transportation agencies also recognize the issues with overheight vehicles’ collisions with bridges, but few stakeholders have definitive countermeasures. Bridges are becoming more vulnerable to collisions from overheight vehicles. The exact response under lateral impact force is difficult to predict. In this paper, nonlinear impact analysis shows that the degree of deformation recorded through the modeling of the unprotected vehicle-girder model provides realistic results compared to the observation from the US-61 bridge overheight vehicle impact. The predicted displacements are 0.229 …

Identification Of Return-Oriented Programming Attacks Using Risc-V Instruction Trace Data, Daniel F. Koranek, Scott R. Graham, Brett J. Borghetti, Wayne C. Henry

Faculty Publications

An increasing number of embedded systems include dedicated neural hardware. To benefit from this specialized hardware, deep learning techniques to discover malware on embedded systems are needed. This effort evaluated candidate machine learning detection techniques for distinguishing exploited from non-exploited RISC-V program behavior using execution traces. We first developed a dataset of execution traces containing Return Oriented Programming (ROP) exploitation on the RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and then developed several deep learning bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models capable of distinguishing exploited traces from non-exploited traces, each using subsets of features from the execution traces. An objective of this …

Visualizing Young Men’S Fertility Desires: A View From Balaka, Malawi, Jenny Trinitapoli, Abdallah Chilungo, Huimeng Zhao, Jimi Adams, Sara Yeatman

Faculty Publications

Fertility desires may not indicate precise plans; nonetheless, they contain important clues for understanding future fertility. On the basis of the dual assertion that fertility desires are (1) meaningful and (2) subject to revision with changing circumstances, this visualization provides a snapshot of young men’s fertility desires using data from the Tsogolo La Thanzi study set in Balaka, Malawi. Scholars typically measure desires by summarizing how many children respondents would like to have (numeric) and when (timing). This visualization adds a third dimension, flexibility, asking how changing circumstances would alter fertility desires, as typically measured. HIV-related concerns reduce most young …

Pickle Associates With Histone Deacetylase 9 To Mediate Vegetative Phase Change In Arabidopsis, Tieqiang Hu, Darren Manuela, Valerie Hinsch, Mingli Xu

Faculty Publications

• The juvenile-to-adult vegetative phase change in flowering plants is mediated by a decrease in miR156 levels. Downregulation of MIR156A/MIR156C, the two major sources of miR156, is accompanied by a decrease in acetylation of histone 3 lysine 27 (H3K27ac) and an increase in trimethylation of H3K27 (H3K27me3) at MIR156A/MIR156C in Arabidopsis.

• Here, we show that histone deacetylase 9 (HDA9) is recruited to MIR156A/MIR156C during the juvenile phase and associates with the CHD3 chromatin remodeler PICKLE (PKL) to erase H3K27ac at MIR156A/MIR156C.

• H2Aub and H3K27me3 become enriched at MIR156A/MIR156C, and the recruitment of Polycomb Repressive Complex …

Faculty Publications

Capuchins are platyrrhines (monkeys found in the Americas) within the Cebidae family. For most of their taxonomic history, the two main morphological types of capuchins, gracile (untufted) and robust (tufted), were assigned to a single genus, Cebus. Further, all tufted capuchins were assigned to a single species, Cebus apella, despite broad geographic ranges spanning Central and northern South America. In 2012, tufted capuchins were assigned to their genus, Sapajus, with eight currently recognized species and five Cebus species, although these numbers are still under debate. Alu retrotransposons are a class of mobile element insertion (MEI) widely used to study primate …

Scope For Pair-Wise Factor Substitution Strategies In Us Rural Transit Operations When Factor Prices Change, Gregory G. Lubiani, Albert A. Okunade

Faculty Publications

Rural transit providers face unique challenges beyond those of their urban counterparts, including worse road conditions, access to trained labor, tighter budget constraints, and higher miles per rider. To date, transportation economics and policy research is scarce for this essential service in rural geographies due to data paucity. Employing the Generalized Translog Cost-minimization model, the core innovation in this paper is presenting the first illustration of the cost-minimization strategies available to transit providers when faced with the constraints of sparsely populated geographic settings. Using a rich dataset of 42 U.S. rural transportation providers across 17 years, we estimate the operational …

Predictors Of Therapy Response In Chronic Aphasia: Building A Foundation For Personalized Aphasia Therapy, Sigfus Kristinsson, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Chris Rorden, Roger Newman-Norlund

Faculty Publications

Chronic aphasia, a devastating impairment of language, affects up to a third of stroke survivors. Speech and language therapy has consistently been shown to improve language function in prior clinical trials, but few clinicially applicable predictors of individual therapy response have been identified to date. Consequently, clinicians struggle substantially with prognostication in the clinical management of aphasia. A rising prevalence of aphasia, in particular in younger populations, has emphasized the increasing demand for a personalized approach to aphasia therapy, that is, therapy aimed at maximizing language recovery of each individual with reference to evidence-based clinical recommendations. In this narrative review, …

Rheology And Filtration Properties Of Bentonite-Water Suspensions As Influenced By Lignocellulosic Nanomaterials And Water-Soluble Biopolymer Additives, Meen Sung Koo, Sun Young Lee, Qinglin Wu Apr 2022

Rheology And Filtration Properties Of Bentonite-Water Suspensions As Influenced By Lignocellulosic Nanomaterials And Water-Soluble Biopolymer Additives, Meen Sung Koo, Sun Young Lee, Qinglin Wu

Faculty Publications

Stability, structural morphology, and rheological and filtration properties of bentonite (BT)-water suspensions as influenced by the addition of lignocellulosic nanomaterials, including bleached nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and lignin-containing NFC (LNFC), and water-soluble polymers (WSPs) were investigated in this work. The performance of the formed fluids varied with the distinct fiber morphology and/or chemical composition of the NFC and LNFC. The NFC helped bridge BT particles for enhanced rheological performance but adversely affected filtration properties by forming thicker filter cakes. Reground NFC led to improved rheological properties owing to more individualized fibers with an enlarged surface area, but its effect on fluid …

Parenting Education For Low-Income Job Seekers: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Parenting With Love And Logic Program, Bryan Spuhler, Jacob A. Esplin, Kay Bradford, Brian J. Higginbotham

Faculty Publications

Although the principles and strategies outlined in Cline and Fay’s (1990) Parenting with Love and Logic have been the foundation for several parent and educator training curricula over the last 30 years, there has been a dearth of empirical research to evaluate these programs (Fay, 2012). Prior research has documented the impact of cumulative family risk factors on parenting skills and child outcomes (Repetti et al., 2002, 2012), but few studies have examined the impact of parenting education courses within unemployed, low-income families. This study investigates perceived parental efficacy across the four program domains of connection, autonomy, regulation, and parental …

High Level Of Persister Frequency In Clinical Staphylococcal Isolates, Sarita Manandhar, Anjana Singh, Ajit Varma, Shanti Pandey, Neeraj Shrivastava

Faculty Publications

Staphylococcus aureus is a notorious human pathogen that causes often lethal systemic conditions that are mostly medical device associated biofilm infections. Similarly, coagulase negative staphylococci are emerging as leading pathogen for nosocomial infections owing to their ability to form biofilm on implanted medical equipment. Chronic in nature, these infections are difficult to treat. Such recalcitrance of these infections is caused mainly due to the presence of persister cells, which exhibit transient yet extreme tolerance to antibiotics. Despite tremendous clinical significance, there is lack of studies on persister cells formation among clinical bacterial isolates. Considering the importance of factors influencing persister …

Soil Volatile Organic Compound Emissions In Response To Soil Warming And Nitrogen Deposition, A. L. Romero-Olivares, C. L. Davie-Martin, M. Kramshoj, R. Rinnan, Serita D. Frey

Faculty Publications

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play crucial roles in ecosystems at multiple scales, ranging from mediating soil microbial interactions to contributing to atmospheric chemistry. However, soil VOCs and how they respond to environmental change remains understudied. We aimed to assess how 2 abiotic global change drivers, soil warming and simulated nitrogen (N) deposition, impact soil VOC emissions over time in a temperate forest. We characterized the effect of warming, N deposition, and their interaction on the composition and emissions of soil VOCs during the growing season of 2 consecutive years. We found that chronic warming and N deposition enhanced total …

General Feature Extraction For Process Monitoring Using Transfer Learning Approaches, Wenbo Zhu, Jinhong Zhang, Jose Romagnoli

Faculty Publications

Data-driven methods have been widely used in process monitoring and fault detection areas. Despite that, most of these data-driven approaches are extremely specific, where the developed models can only be applied in the given process with the selected variables. The lack of generalization potentially limits its applications. This work mainly focuses on developing a model with better generalization ability and transferability for process data analytics. We proposed a transitional invariant feature extraction method using convolutional neural networks, which can learn features regardless of the size or sequence of the input. Such an approach allows the transfer learning so that the …

Library Diversity And Inclusion Statements In Action, Megan Bresnahan

Faculty Publications

In recent years, many academic libraries have renewed their commitments to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives in public statements. In this qualitative study, the author interviewed academic librarians to understand how these commitments have been actualized in libraries, and what barriers and challenges have been faced by individuals coordinating this work. All libraries had established committees to implement EDI initiatives, but committees with dedicated positions, budgets, and consistent support from administrators were able to attempt more large-scale, systematic work. The study includes recommendations for library administrators for providing effective structures and support for EDI efforts.

H-Atom And O-Atom Methods: From Balancing Redox Reactions To Determining The Number Of Transferred Electrons, Pong Yuen, Cheng Man Diana Lau

Faculty Publications

Defining and balancing redox reaction requires both chemical knowledge and mathematical skills. The prevalent approach is to use the concept of oxidation number to determine the number of transferred electrons. However, the task of calculating oxidation numbers is often challenging. In this article, the H-atom method and O-atom method are developed for balancing redox equations. These two methods are based on the definition of redox reaction, which is the gain and loss of hydrogen or oxygen atoms. They complement current practices and provide an alternate path to balance redox equations. The advantage of these methods is that calculation of oxidation …
