Surface-sterilized leaf sections from mature Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula Ellis) plants produced several adventitious plantlets when cultured on full strength Lin and Staba medium or a reduced strength Murashige and Skoog growth medium supplemented with 0.5-25 μM cytokinin. Zeatin at 9.0 or 22.5 μm was found to be most effective in inducing adventitious shoot formation. These shoots were excised and subcultured on a low salt medium to generate roots. The rooted plants then were transferred to sterilized peat moss and grown to maturity. A large number of plants could be regenerated through repeated subculture of leaf segments.

During the past two decades in Hawaii, more than 500 injection wells for the disposal of domestic sewage wastewater have been constructed and operated. Thus far, contamination of potable groundwater supplies has not been a problem. Many of the injection wells, however, have not performed as designed, and aquifer clogging and reduced injection capacity have produced numerous well failures resulting in public health, legal, and financial problems. Factors most commonly responsible for the well problems have been unfavorable hydrogeology, underdesign of injection well capacity, poor effluent quality, and lack of injection well maintenance. In major prospective studies it has been reported that high heart rate at rest predicts the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men, but the mechanisms producing these relationships are unknown. Since lipoprotein levels contribute strongly to the risk of CHD and CVD, we examined the relationship of resting heart rate to plasma concentrations of high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL), and very low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and A-II, and serum concentrations of lipoprotein subfractions in 81 men to determine if atherogenic lipoproteins could potentially induce the reported association of heart rate with development of …

The Shizuoka Prefectural Office in Japan plays an important role in promoting earthquake emergency preparedness among its industries. In addition to implementing regulatory requirements and enacting new regulations as necessary, the Prefectural Office also provides significant guidance to industry. This includes making publications available and periodic surveys of the status of industrial emergency preparedness. A pharmaceutical company in the prefecture has developed an impressive earthquake preparedness program and hazard reduction techniques. This program addresses both primary and secondary effects of earthquakes.

The jump conditions that hold across singular surfaces for the fields having step function discontinuities do not, in general, apply if these surfaces themselves carry concentrated fields. In this note, the general situation when the surfaces of discontinuity carry multilayers and deform as they propagate is discussed. Formulas are presented for the first and second derivatives for these multilayers. © 1985.

The principles of the group action approach to structural phase transitions are outlined. It is assumed that all properties of the transition are determined by the action of a single physically irreducible represention of the space group of the more symmetric phase. We determine the isotropy groups using the image space of the representation. The free energy minima are determined to fourth order and to all orders using the results of Gufan and then compared. This theory is applied to Calcite (Roverline3c) to determine all possible continuous commensurate phase transitions.

Flora Of The Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation Of Utah And Colorado; Part Iii, Icacinoxylon Pittiense N. Sp., William D. Tidwell, Gregory F. Thayn, W. L. Stokes

Icacinoxylon pittiense, a new species of angiospermous wood from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah is described and compared with similar fossil and modern woods. It is distinguished from other species of Icacinoxylon by its thick-walled fiber-tracheids with their walls making up at least 50% of the total diameter of the cells, conspicuous bordered pits with obliquely crossing extended apertures on both the tangential and radial walls of its fiber-tracheids, scalariform perforation plates with as few as four or greater than 30 bars, transitional opposite to scalariform pitting on its vessel walls, thick-walled ray cells, and distinct sheath …

New Shubnikov-De Haas Effects In A Two-Dimensional Electron-Hole System, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, E. E. Mendez, L. L. Chang, L. Esaki

We report the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations from a two-dimensional electron-hole system in GaSb-InAs-GaSb quantum wells at very low temperatures. The samples are double heterostructures containing separate electron and hole layers. The oscillations arising from the electron layer behave regularly with temperature. Additional oscillations, characterized by strong temperature dependence, and relatively large peak widths are believed to arise from the presence of hole layers.

Professor Wilson is right, “Christological reflection is crossing a threshold...entering an unfamiliar room.” My response focuses his point by posing a question and proposing an answer. Is this new room a labor room or a morgue? Will christological reflection in this room labor and give birth to a new and vibrant orthodoxy and orthopraxis? Or will it die shy and embarrassed for lack of moral and spiritual fortitude, or intellectual and practical wisdom? The answer to the question of morgue or labor room lies in marking the powers and limits of christology and pluralism.

Most forest farmers know that growing timber is a good investment. Some forest farmers, however, and many new timberland investors may not fully understand the basic ingredients that make up a forestry investment. Like other ventures, forest farming involves costs and revenues, and rates of return can be calculated. These rates can be compared with interest rates for other investments, but forest farming is not exactly like your other investments. It has special qualities.

If you are considering a reforestation investment, you should be concerned with its effective cost; ,that is, the cost of reforestation after considering interest arid timing of the tax savings and cost-share payments. Effective regeneration costs depend on your interest rate, marginal tax rate, and whether or not you receive assistance from a state or federal cost-share program.

Forest products firms often buy much of their raw material through competitive bidding. The bidding process is vital to such companies, yet models are often used which merely help predict winning bids. Managers should consider expected returns from potential timber buying contracts-the product of profit and the prob· ability of realizing that profit. A general approach is summarized for maximizing expected profit in competitive bidding. For timber buying, profits are net returns minus stumpage costs. The probability of obtaining the profit is the probability a given bid will be accepted, and can be represented by a probability density function. The …

Public Law 96-451 provides federal income tax incentives for reforestation. Taxpayers are allowed an investment tax credit in the year reforestation costs are incurred and deductions of one-fourteenth of reforestation costs on their first tax return, one-seventh on each of their next six tax returns, and one-fourteenth on their eighth tax return. The amount amortized is 95 percent of costs if a 10-percent tax credit is claimed or 100 percent of costs if an 8- percent credit is chosen. The credit and deductions can be applied for up to $10,000 of reforestation costs each year.

Three or six ounces of colloidal phosphate were applied either in planting hole or on soil surface while planting loblolly pine in East Texas. Combination of phosphate in the planting hole with NK on soil surface increased diameter growth for four years and the height growth for 18 years after planting.

Three species of pines (loblolly, slash and longleaf) were planted with four treatments (loblolly and slash = bareroot, clay dip slurry and TerrasorH ; longleaf = containerized) to test survival on droughty, typic quartzipsamments soils. At the end of the first season, survival~s significantly better for the containerized longleaf and Terrasoro treated loblolly pine (81 and 85%) followed by untreaRed loblolly pine (51%), clay-treated loblolly (50%), then Terrasorb treated slash (48%), untreated slash (41%) and clay-treated slash (36%). Permanent plots have been established in 178 loblolly and 78 slash pine plantations throughout East Texas to study the development of stand structure over time. Analysis of the data will provide methods of estimating growth and yield, mortality, and site productivity to assist managers of these plantations.

A major activity of forest industry is supplying their mills with wood. There are four options for wood procurement: fee land, lease land, landowner assistance programs, and open market. The task of the corporate planner is to allocate the limited budget among these options in such a way that the needed volumes of wood are procured at the least cost. A methodology has been developed to aid in this capital budget in process and has been incorporated in an easy-to-use computer program.

The problem of optimal density over time for even-aged, mixed-species stands is formulated as a nonlinear-integer programming problem with numbers of trees cut by species and diameter class as decision variables. The model is formulated using a stand-table projection growth model to predict mixed-speciesg rowth and stand-structureO. ptimal thinning and final harvest age are estimated simultaneously using heuristic random search algorithms. Simple financial maturity guidelines recommend harvesting timber when its rate of value growth becomes less than or equal to the highest rate that can be earned in other investments of equal risk. Several authors have shown that fin ancial maturity guides are consistent with maximizing economic c riteria such as net present va lue , but their results are sometimes accepted by fore sters and land managers without being fully understood. In this article , financial maturity guides are derived in a way that is easily understood, simply by maximizing the present value of all future net income.

Timber resources and related economic activity are substantial in the Mid-South states of Tennessee Alabama Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Most of u; are awar~ that timber is an important aspect of our regional economy. We observe many stands of timber and often see it being harvested and transported to shipping points and manuf~cturing facilities. Many, however, do not fully appreoate the absolute size of the Mid-South's forest resources, nor their relative importance to states within the region.
