Stereological methods were employed in two studies with stallions 1) to determine if seasonal variation in the total volume of Leydig cells is a function of cell number or cell size and 2) to characterize the annual cycle of the Leydig cell population. In the first study, numbers of Leydig cells were calculated for 28 adult (4-20 yr) stallions in the breeding or nonbreeding seasons from nuclear volume density (percentage of the decapsulated testicular volume), parenchymal volume (decapsulated testicular volume), and the volume of individual Leydig cell nuclei. The article is divided into three major sections. Section I traces the development of a separate doctrine of “congressional standing.” It examines the doctrine's development from the Supreme Court's initial consideration of legislative standing through the current opinions of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Section II then analyzes three possible theories of congressional injury and standing. Derivative, representative, and third-party standing theories are all rejected as a basis for congressional standing. While rejecting the suggestion that congressmen possess a personal interest in “their” votes sufficient to constitute the “distinct and palpable injury” required …

Views concerning the appropriate relationship between church and state are rapidly becoming almost as numerous as America's religious sects. The Constitution's treatment of religious liberty, thought by many to be a matter long settled, has now erupted into a many-sided debate. Not only lawyers, judges and legal commentators are involved; historians and sociologists, theologians and ecclesiastics, political theorists and statesmen also participate in the debate. It is part of a much larger struggle over a redefinition, or for some a reclamation, of the role of religion in American public life. At times this debate focuses on discrete environments, such as …

The purpose of this survey is to note important caselaw developments in the state and lower federal courts concerning religious liberty. Purposely omitted are the widely reported United States Supreme Court opinions, as well as cases where the high court has granted review during its 1986-87 term. The focus here is to collect significant cases that may otherwise escape broad attention. Only the facts and rationale of each court's decision is recorded. No editorial comment on the merits of these cases is intended.

It has recently been reported that a low intake of calcium may be a risk factor for hypertension. In view of the contradictory results, even when the same survey data base has been used by different researchers, an in-depth analysis was undertaken of the data provided by the two cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Both surveys, conducted in consecutive 4-year intervals during the 1970s, were designed to examine representative samples of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. Blood pressure levels, anthropometric parameters, and dietary intakes were assessed in 1981 and 1983 in a population of black (n = 236) and white (n = 296) adolescent girls, aged 14 and 16 years in 1983. The 14-year-old black girls exhibited significantly higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures than whites in both years. Body weight and Quetelet index were more strongly associated with blood pressure than were height and triceps skinfold thickness. Correcting blood pressures for weight, Quetelet index, 2-year changes in height, and age at menarche decreased in each case (but did not negate) the observed race differences …

Sands and minor gravels are concentrated in middle and lower fan channel fills, and in lower fan channel-mouth deposits. Silts and clays occur in overbank deposits, passive channel fills, and interbeds associated with coarser facies. Graded bedding and lamination, both of varying thickness, are the dominant sedimentary structures in all environments. At this stage in their depositional history, the sands are relatively clean, have high porosities, show only minor pore-reducing diagenetic effects, and thus have excellent hydrocarbon reservoir potential. -from Authors

A general formulation is developed for determining the free energy of a Fermi gas contained in an arbitrary smooth external potential barrier and in a weak magnetic field, in the low-temperature limit. The Wigner phase-space formalism of quantum mechanics is used as a calculational tool. Explicit formulas are given, which enable one to compute surface and temperature effects on various physical properties (susceptibility, specific heat, etc.) of the system. Some simple examples are constructed for the diamagnetic-susceptibility calculation, which show that the corrections depend on the form of the surface potential barrier and the size of the material, but, in …

Independent studies have shown that both the constant-stress and the elastic instability models describe the form of a plant's central stem. Teleologically, the constant stress model states that a stem tapers to equalize stress produced by wind pressure along the stem. The elastic instability model states that stems and branches taper to maintain similar elasticity throughout the tree and that total tree height is limited to about one-quarter of the height at which the stem would buckle under its own weight. Reduction In The Incidence Of Rejection Of Heterotopic Murine Corneal Transplants By Pretreatment With Ultraviolet Radiation, Larry Ray-Keil, John W. Chandler

A reduction in the incidence of rejection of mouse heterotopic corneal allografts was achieved by in vitro pretreatment of the graft with ultraviolet light. By day 21, 68% of untreated BALB/c corneas trans-planted into s.c. abdominal pouches of C57BL/6 recipi-ents demostrated rejection In contrast, corneas pre-treated with UV-A, -B, or -C at 150 mJ/cm2 showed an incidence of rejection at day 21 of 30%, 33% and 18%, respectively. Experiments indicate a significant reduction in rejection with doses of UV-B radiation above 75 mJ/cm. 2 The mechanism of this reduction is unknown, but may be due to a depletion or alteration …

Heifer, bull, fetal calf sera, and colostral whey were used to evaluate the influence of protein concentrations on percent progressive motility, head-to-head agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence of bovine spermatozoa using ejaculates from 10 bulls. In the first experiment, 10% (vol/vol) addition of undiluted colostral whey resulted in the highest head-to-head agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence. Ten percent (vol/vol) addition of whey diluted to a protein concentration equivalent to fetal calf serum produced significantly lower agglutination, acrosomal integrity, and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence. Fetal calf serum was unable to produce agglutination and immunoglobulin G immunofluorescence of bovine …

A method is presented for predicting shunt currents in stacks of undivided and divided bipolar plate cells. The method is an efficient way of solving the coupled sets of algebraic equations that arise from using circuit analog models to represent the current paths in stacks of undivided or divided bipolar plate cells. These algebraic equations can be eitherlinear or nonlinear depending upon the current-potential relationships used in the model (i.e., nonlinear circuit elements can be included). The method is used to show the importance of including nonsymmetrical resistances and nonlinear circuit elements in the models. Also, the method …

Normally graded parallel laminae, ranging in thickness from less than 1 mm to several centimeters, are the most common small-scale sedimentary structure. These thin beds grade from either sand or silt to very fine clay; concentrations of foraminifers at the top of the fine clays are common. Microcross-stratification, thin distorted layers, and microfracturing are rather common; reworked plant material, mica, and volcanic shards are abundant. -from Authors
