This study addresses the question, "How can the optical properties of matter in ultrathin amorphous nonmetallic films in multilayers best be determined from reflectance (R) and transmission (T) measurements?" A blue shift in the band gap of plasma CVD a-Si:H/a-SiNx:H multilayers was reported several years ago. It was suggested that the shift in the band gap, Eg, Relative to bulk a-Si:H as given by the Tauç plot was due to quantum confinement effects. On The Use Of A Modified Square-Well Model For Prediction And Correlation Of Thermal Diffusion Factors In Binary Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, S. C. Yi

Recently reported thermal diffusion factors obtained from heats of transport have been used to test the ability of existing theories to predict thermal diffusivities using model parameters regressed from pure component transport data. None of the theories tested were able to provide even qualitative agreement with experiment. However, predictions using a square-well Enskog theory, modified here for consistency with normal experimental definitions, were found to be approximately correct using pure-component square-well parameters regressed from viscosity and thermal conductivity and an assumed mixing rule for cross terms. Heats Of Transport From Diffusion Thermoeffect Measurements On Binary Liquid Mixtures Of Carbon Tetrachloride With Benzene, Toluene, 2-Propanone, N-Hexane, And N-Octane, Richard L. Rowley, S. C. Yi

Measurements of heats of transport are reported for binary liquid mixtures containing carbon tetrachloride and benzene, toluene, 2-propanone, n-hexane, or n-octane at 298 K and ambient pressure. Additionally, measurements were made at 308 K for carbon tetrachloride with benzene, toluene, and 2-propanone. The corresponding heat-mass Onsager coefficients are also reported, from which thermal diffusion ratios have been calculated based on Onsager reciprocity. These data will be used in a companion paper to report a modified Enskog method for correlation and prediction of heats of transport.

A paper by Barton (ibid., vol.20, p.879, 1987) comments on some of Ford et al.'s recent work in this general area and takes issue with some of their conclusions. Ford et al. point out that Barton's reinterpretation of his own previous work actually serves to support their conclusions. In particular, he is making extensive use of thermodynamic concepts (free energy, thermodynamic perturbation theory, . . .) which were introduced for the first time into this area in the papers by Ford et al.

Backfilling Canals To Mitigate Wetland Dredging In Louisiana Coastal Marshes, Christopher Neill, R. Eugene Turner

Returning canal spoil banks into canals, or backfilling, is used in Louisiana marshes to mitigate damage caused by dredging for oil and gas extraction. We evaluated 33 canals backfilled through July 1984 to assess the success of habitat restoration. We determined restoration success by examining canal depth, vegetation recolonization, and regraded spoil bank soils after backfilling. Restoration success depended on: marsh type, canal location, canal age, marsh soil characteristics, the presence or absence of a plug at the canal mouth, whether mitigation was on- or off-site, and dredge operator performance.

Surface-To-Surface Transition Via Electromagnetic Coupling Of Coplanar Waveguides, Robert W. Jackson, David W. Matolak

A transition is investigated which couples coplanar waveguide on one substrate surface (a motherboard) to coplanar waveguide on another substrate surface (a semiconductor chip or subarray) placed above the first. No wire bonds are necessary. A full-wave analysis using coupled line theory is presented and verified experimentally. The use of this transition for coupling to millimeter-wave integrated circuits is discussed.

When the new Christian confirms his spiritual marriage to the Lord in baptism, we witness the outcome of a long, painstaking process wherein humans, as coworkers with God, have unselfishly worked to gain the victory over the devil. At the moment of reaping, we rejoice, exclaiming, "It was worth all the effort!"

Normal-Metal Aharonov-Bohm Effect In The Presence Of A Transverse Electric Field, S. Washburn, H. Schmid, D. Kern, Richard A. Webb

The effects of transverse electric fields on the conductance fluctuations in an Sb loop have been studied. We show that the electric field can be used to tune the position (or phase) of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations as well as to alter the aperiodic conductance fluctuation patterns. We disucss two mechanisms which might cause the observed dependence of the fluctuation pattern on transverse electric field. The first is the electrostatic Aharonov-Bohm effect, and the second is the spatial shifting of the electron trajectories by the electric field.

From the first decades following the ascension of Jesus until the present the whole complex of emerging questions of ministry have been intimately bound up with society-wide crises of authority. Any discussion of the ministry of the baptized eventually reaches a point where someone asks, “If all the baptized are ministers, then why and how do we distinguish between the ministry of clergy and laity?” One promising answer begins, “The clergy have a public ministry....” The unspoken half of that answer, seldom said, but powerfully lived out in contemporary capitalistic cultures is, “The laity’s ministry is private.” This response constricts the scope of the gospel and plays into the contemporary gulf between the public and private dimensions of our lives.

This articles analyzes the growth and development of the doctrine of personal jurisdiction and the Supreme Court's consideration and application of that doctrine in the recent case of Asahi Metal Industry Co. v. Superior Court. Asahi is significant both because of the nature of the suit and the nationality of the third-party defendant. The Supreme Court for the first time directly addressed the constitutionality of the ‘stream of commerce’ doctrine of personal jurisdiction, a jurisdictional theory that has been employed increasingly in recent years in products liability actions. As the names ‘Organized Crime Control Act’ and ‘Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations' themselves indicate, Congress' concern was the threat posed by organized crime and racketeering. The OCCA's purpose was ‘to seek the eradication of organized crime in the United States . . . by providing enhanced sanctions and new remedies to deal with the unlawful activities of those engaged in organized crime.’ According to the Senate Report, RICO's purpose was to ‘eliminate . . . the infiltration of organized crime and racketeering into legitimate organizations operating in interstate commerce.’

The problem addressed is this: Do there exist nonconsecutive integers n₀, n₁, n₂, . . ., such that the second differences of the squares of the n_i are constant? Specifically, can that constant be equal to 2? A complete characterization of sequences of length four can be given. The question of whether or not sequences of length five exist is still open but the existence or nonexistence of such sequences can be described in a more algorithmic way than the simple statement of the problem.

A small decrease in T_c of 0.3 K to 0.5 K is observed when as much as 90% of the ¹⁶O in YBa₂Cu₃O₇ is substituted with¹⁸O. This result is consistent with our observation that there is an oxygen isotope effect in La_1.85Sr_0.15CuO₄, but in contrast with previous reports that there is no isotope effect for YBa₂Cu₃O₇. This new result suggests that phonons play an important role in the electron-pairing mechanism in YBa₂Cu₃O₇.

A cinematographer's perspective regarding gamma and contrast manipulation in video and film is given. In film, a selective exposure can be used; the negative characteristic is the cinematographer's creative tool. The use of film as a video medium is considered, both negative and positive transfer. Contrast reproduction in the video medium is explained, and film and video gammas are compared. Also compared with the film gamma is the gamma obtained with an HDTV camera. Each year claimants file thousands of section 1983 actions against law enforcement or prison officials. Many of these claimants allege that officials used excessive force against them in violation of their constitutional rights. Despite the large number of excessive force cases in the federal courts, however, the Supreme Court has decided only two excessive force cases brought under section 1983. In Whitley v. Albers, the Court elaborated the appropriate standard for determining whether the shooting of a prisoner violated the eighth amendment. In Tennessee v. Garner, the Court applied the fourth amendment to strike down a Tennessee statute that authorized …

Initiation Of Terpenoid Synthesis In Osmophores Of Stanhopea Anfracta (Orchidaceae): A Cytochemical Study, Kenneth J. Curry

The terpenoid component of the osmophore fragrance in Stanhopea species is composed of isoprene units synthesized via the mevalonic acid pathway. Localization of hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA synthase in the pathway was achieved using a technique which elicits the formation of an electron- dense precipitate of uranyl ferrocyanide at the point where an acetyl group from acetyl CoA is transferred to acetoacetyl CoA, releasing free CoA-SH. Applying this technique to cells of the osmophore of S. anfracta resulted in a precipitate between the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes, in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and, to a lesser extent, on the outer surface …

Species of the Neotropical orchid genus Stanhopea produce a fragrance comprising terpenoids and aromatics which attracts euglossine bee pollinators. The secretory tissue, called an osmo- phore, is located in the adaxial region of a sac formed near the proximal portion of the floral lip. This region is easily recognized in Stanhopea oculata and S. wardii because it is papillate. The osmophore in these two species includes all the cells of the papillae and those directly below, that grade into fundamental tissue. Osmophore cells are more densely cytoplasmic than cells in the adjacent tissue. Numerous amyloplasts and mitochondria are seen in …

A decision-directed learning strategy is presented to recursively estimate (i.e., track) the time-varying a priori distribution for a multivariate empirical Bayes adaptive classification rule. The problem is formulated by modeling the prior distribution as a finite-state vector Markov chain and using past decisions to estimate the time evolution of the state of this chain. The solution is obtained by implementing an exact recursive nonlinear estimator for the rate vector of a multivariate discrete-time point process representing the decisions. An oxygen isotope shift is observed in superconducting La_1.85Sr_0.15CuO₄ when ¹⁸O is substituted partially for ¹⁶O; the superconducting transition temperature T_c is lowered by 0.3 to 1.0 K in different samples. We examine these results using conventioanl phonon-mediated BCS theory and conclude that, for La_1.85Sr_0.15CuO₄, phonons play an important role in the pairing mechanism.
