One-Dimensional Nash Groups, James J. Madden, Charles M. Stanton

A Lie group equipped with a compatible real algebraic structure is called a locally Nash group. We prove some general facts about locally Nash groups, then we classify the one-dimensional locally Nash groups, using a theorem of Weierstrass that characterizes the analytic functions satisfying an algebraic addition theorem. Besides the standard Nash structure on the additive group of real numbers, there are locally Nash structures on the additive reals induced by the exponential function, the sine function, and by any elliptic function that is real on ℝ. There are no other simply connected one-dimensional locally Nash groups. Any two quotients …

Correlation Between Diverse Seismic And Physical Properties Data Sets: Site 763, Southern Exmouth Plateau, J. M. Lorenzo, E. E. Vera

Five major reflectors in multichannel seismic common-depth-point line 667 (acquired with an airgun source), single-channel seismic ODP line 5 (acquired with a high-resolution watergun), and expanded spread profile C2 can be dated and tied to lithologic units. Through an initial τ-sum construction, followed by traveltime and full waveform forward modeling, ESP-derived compressional wave velocities can more accurately match traveltimes of these reflectors than full-reflectivity synthetic seismograms produced from shipboard-derived properties. Instrument calibration, drilling disturbance, and rebound effects suffered by the laboratory samples are sources of error. Extensions Of Tutte's Wheels-And-Whirls Theorem, Collette R. Coullard, James G. Oxley

Tutte's wheels-and-whirls theorem states that if M is a 3-connected matroid and, for every element e, both the deletion and the contraction of e destroy 3-connectivity, then M is a wheel or a whirl. We prove some extensions of this theorem, one of which states that if M is 3-connected and has both a wheel and a whirl minor, then either M has only seven elements or there is some element the deletion or contraction of which maintains 3-connectivity and leaves a matroid with both a wheel and a whirl minor. © 1992.

The Asymptotic Expansion Of Certain Multi-Dimensional Generalized Functions, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

We apply regularization of divergent integrals in the derivation of the asymptotic expansion of certain multi-dimensional generalized functions. We further present several illustrations to demonstrate that the asymptotic development of generalized functions provides a lucid formulation of many concepts in asymptotic analysis such as the expansion of oscillatory integrals and the expansion of certain series. © 1992.

Emergence Of Radiation From Gravitational Potential Wells: The Absence Of Ωm Effects, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

We consider a source of gravitational waves of frequency ω, located near the center of a massive galaxy of mass M and radius R with ωR-1. The case of odd-parity gravitational waves propagating through a perfect-fluid galaxy is particularly simple; for this case we find that, in addition to the expected redshift of the radiation emerging from the galaxy, there is a small amount of backscatter, of order Mω2R3. We show that there is no suppression of radiative power by the factor 1+ω2M24 as has been recently predicted by Kundu. The origin of Kundu's suppression lies in the interpretation of …

The two-electron Schrödinger equation is analyzed in hyperspherical coordinates, with the electrons described throughout as a pair. In contrast to the current adiabatic hyperspherical method, which reverts at large distances to a description in terms of individual electrons, the pair aspect is preserved also asymptotically. Whereas the adiabatic potential wells converge to single-ionization limits, we develop potential wells converging to the double-ionization limit of the system, and doubly excited states are then viewed as eigenstates of the pair in these wells. At the simplest level, we get series converging to the double-ionization limit which are described analytically by the pair-Rydberg …

Seasonal Response Of Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii Var. Elliottii Engelm.) Photosynthesis To Long‐Term Exposure To Ozone And Acidic Precipitation, David P. Byres, Jon D. Johnson, Thomas J. Dean

Four half‐sib families of slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii) were planted in open‐top chambers and exposed to ozone and simulated acidic precipitation (3: 7 molar ratio of nitric and sulphuric acids). The 4 ozone treatments were (1) charcoal‐filtered air, (2) unfiltered ambient air, (3) twice ambient and (4) three times ambient ozone, with treatments applied 12 h per day, 11 months per year for 28 months. Seedlings were irrigated weekly with one of three rain acidities: pH 33, 4.3 or 5.3 at a total rainfall equivalent of 133 cm per year. Seedlings from four half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. were planted in open‐top chambers, and exposed to ozone and simulated acidic precipitation. Treatments were applied for 11 months per year for 28 months. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal filtered air (CF), nonfiltered ambient air (1×), twice the nonfiltered level (2 ×) and three times the nonfiltered level (3 ×). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow natural diurnal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. Simulated acid rain at pH 3.3, 4.3 or 5.3 was delivered weekly at the same volume as average weekly rainfall to all chambers. Leaf area, …

Nodal Humor In Comic Narrative: A Semantic Analysis Of Two Stories By Twain And Wodehouse, Christopher Holcomb

This paper shows that a semantic theory of humor offers, despite assertions to the contrary, an adequate description of how particular instances of humor are linked to the narrative in which they appear. After Victor Raskin's script-based semantic theory of humor is summarized, and adopted as the starting point of the analysis in this paper, the humor in two short stories is described in terms of their semantic properties. In this paper, humor is said to reside not simply in jokes but in joke-like constructions, for which the term "nodal points of humor" is used. These nodes can be identified …

Discussion of the evaluation of training programs for teachers of English as a Second Language consists of: (1) characterization of general approaches; (2) review of reasons for interest in program evaluation; and (3) description of a University of Northern Iowa (UNI) evaluation project that uses a portfolio approach extending 3 years beyond program completion. At UNI; assessment of teacher trainees occurs at four points in the trainee's career: at declaration of undergraduate ESL major; at approximately the second semester of the junior year; during the last undergraduate semester; and 1-3 years after graduation.
