"Good Heavens!": An Old English Euphemism?, Dallin D. Oaks Jan 1993

"Good Heavens!": An Old English Euphemism?, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

It is commonly assumed that the expression good heavens! is a euphemistic one, originally coined to avoid a more direct reference to God. The OED, for example, seems to regard the word heavens as a "substituted expression" for God in the exclamation good heavens! While this substitution may in fact characterize how speakers use the expression now, it may not reflect the original meaning behind this expression.

Honoring Diversity In Teacher Education: Infusing Learning Styles; Cooperative Learning And Multicultural Nonsexist Education Into The Student Teaching Semester, Janey L. Montgomery, Joyce Simpson, Judy Lindholm

Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates how teacher educators can empower preservice teachers to develop a rationale for honoring diversity in their classrooms by building upon an awareness of learning style preference; cooperative learning; and multicultural nonsexist education. A human relations course at the University of Northern Iowa that is taught concurrently with the student teaching experience demonstrates how student teachers become involved in collaborative relationships with their peers by sharing weekly seminars; planning presentations; doing action research; and engaging in classroom instruction. The model involves personalization of concepts through experiential learning in which group building and team teaching are key strategies. Learning …

A Pilot Study: Comparing The Use Of Computer-Based Instruction Materials And Audio-Tape Materials In Practicing Chinese, Ka-Fai Shiu, Sharon E. Smaldino

Faculty Publications

Computer-based and audio tape materials were compared for their effectiveness in helping students practice Chinese language lessons. Subjects were enrolled in an intensive elementary course in Mandarin Chinese. The textbook and audio tape were prepared by the Beijing Language Institute in China; and the computer-based material was developed by the author using HyperCard based on the textbook. Written and spoken components were tested; using tests developed by the instructor; a native of China. The instructional materials were used alternately in the 16-week course at the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls). Students performed better in the weeks the computer-based materials …

A Districtwide Staff Development Program For Transitioning From A Basal To A Whole Language Literacy Program: The Teacher Educator's Role As A Partner In The Change Process, Jeannie L. Steele, Kurt Meredith

Faculty Publications

This paper describes Project MILE (Moline Improvement in Literacy Education); a school/university partnership program between the University of Northern Iowa and Moline (Iowa) Public School District #40. The project called for a long-term collaborative effort in order to develop a complex and sophisticated level of university involvement with a single school district; which would allow for observation of successes and failures and provide opportunities for refinement of training efforts based on feedback. The project combined the prescriptive and catalytic models of organizational intervention; as teacher educators served as consultants to bring new information and strategies to the school teaching and …

Postsynaptic Ca2+, But Not Cumulative Depolarization, Is Necessary For The Induction Of Associative Plasticity In Hermissenda, Ronald F. Rogers, R. F. Matzel Jan 1993

Postsynaptic Ca2+, But Not Cumulative Depolarization, Is Necessary For The Induction Of Associative Plasticity In Hermissenda, Ronald F. Rogers, R. F. Matzel

Faculty Publications

The neuronal modifications that underlie associative memory in Hermissenda have their origins in a synaptic interaction between the visual and vestibular systems, and can be mimicked by contiguous in vitro stimulation of these converging pathways. At the offset of vestibular stimulation (i.e., hair cell activity), the B photoreceptors are briefly released from synaptic inhibition resulting in a slight depolarization (2–4 mV). If contiguous pairings of light-induced depolarization and presynaptic vestibular activity occur in close temporal succession, this depolarization “accumulates” and has been hypothesized to culminate in a sustained rise in intracellular Ca2+ and a resultant Ca(2+)-mediated phosphorylation of K+ channels …

Freedom Of Speech For Libraries And Librarians, Rodney A. Smolla

Faculty Publications

Noting the recent bicentennial of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Professor Smolla considers the role of librarians in opposing censorship. He proposes a new principle of "professionalism" to establish the librarian's role, and discusses the principle in light of the Supreme Court's decision in Board of Education v. Pico.

Projection Solutions Of Frobenius-Perron Operator Equations, Jiu Ding, Tien Tien Li Jan 1993

Projection Solutions Of Frobenius-Perron Operator Equations, Jiu Ding, Tien Tien Li

Faculty Publications

We construct in this paper the first order and second order piecewise polynomial finite approximation schemes for the computation of invariant measures of a class of nonsingular measurable transformations on the unit interval of the real axis. These schemes are based on the Galerkin’s projection method for L1-spaces and are proved to be convergent for the class of Frobenius-Perron operators.

Dna Replication In Chloroplasts, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon Jan 1993

Dna Replication In Chloroplasts, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon

Faculty Publications

Chloroplasts contain multiple copies of a DNA molecule (the plastome) that encodes many of the gene products required to perform photosynthesis. The plastome is replicated by nuclear-encoded proteins and its copy number seems to be highly regulated by the cell in a tissue-specific and developmental manner. Our understanding of the biochemical mechanism by which the plastome is replicated and the molecular basis for its regulation is limited. In this commentary we review our present understanding of chloroplast DNA replication and examine current efforts to elucidate its mechanism at a molecular level.

Developmental Appropriateness Of Kindergarten Programs And Academic Outcomes In First Grade, Diane C. Burts, Craig H. Hart, Rosalind Charlesworth, Michele Dewolf, Jeanette Ray, Karen Manuel, Pamela O. Fleege

Faculty Publications

This study explored the relationship between the developmental appropriateness of kindergarten classroom instruction and first-grade report card grade overall averages and average in reading, language, spelling, math, science, and social studies. the interactive roles that gender, SES, and kindergarten classroom type play in children's later achievement were also examined. The sample consisted of 166 first-grade children who had attended kindergarten classrooms with teaching practices identified as predominately developmentally appropriate or developmentally inappropriate. Findings indicated that first-graders from more appropriate kindergarten classrooms had higher reading averages than children from less appropriate kindergarten classrooms. Females had higher overall and subject area averages …

Progress In Coal Pyrolysis, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher, Ronald J. Pugmire Jan 1993

Progress In Coal Pyrolysis, Peter R. Solomon, Thomas H. Fletcher, Ronald J. Pugmire

Faculty Publications

The heterogeneous nature of coal and the complexity of the pyrolysis process have made it very difficult to perform unambiguous experiments to determine the rates and mechanisms in coal pyrolysis. However, recent years have seen a number of new experimental and theoretical approaches which shed new light on the subject. This paper considers the recent progress on kinetics, the formation of volatile products, network models, cross-linking, rank effects, and the ‘two-component’ model of coal structure. Recent experiments which measured coal particle temperatures at high heating rates provide reasonable agreement on kinetic rate constants. These rates also agree with those derived …
