Structures Of And Allelic Diversity And Relationships Among The Major Outer Membrane Protein (Ompa) Genes Of The Four Chlamydial Species, B. Kaltenboeck, K. G. Kousoulas, J. Storz
Faculty Publications
DNA sequences coding for 81% of the ompA gene from 24 chlamydial strains, representing all chlamydial species, were determined from DNA amplified by polymerase chain reactions. Chlamydial strains of serovars and strains with similar chromosomal restriction fragment length polymorphism had identical ompA DNA sequences. The ompA sequences were segregated into 23 different ompA alleles and aligned with each other, and phylogenetic relationships among them were inferred by neighbor-joining and maximum parsimony analyses. The neighbor-joining method produced a single phylogram which was rooted at the branch between two major clusters. One cluster included all Chlamydia trachomatis ompA alleles (trachoma group). The …
Truncation Of The Carboxy-Terminal 28 Amino Acids Of Glycoprotein B Specified By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Mutant Amb1511-7 Causes Extensive Cell Fusion, A. Baghian, L. Huang, S. Newman, S. Jayachandra, K. G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications
Three amber mutations were introduced proximal to the syn3 locus of the herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein B (gB) gene specifying gB derivatives lacking the carboxy-terminal 28, 49, or 64 amino acids. A complementation system that utilized gBs expressed in COS cells to complement gB-null virus KΔT was established. The 49- or 64-amino-acid-truncated gBs failed to complement gB-null virus KΔT, while the 28-amino-acid-truncated gB complemented KΔT efficiently. Mutant herpes simplex virus type 1 KOS (amb1511-7) specifying the 28-amino-acid-truncated gB fused Vero cells extensively.

Glycine And Alanine Supplementation Of Culture Medium Enhances Development Of In Vitro Matured And Fertilized Cattle Embryos, K. Moore, K. R. Bondioli
Faculty Publications
One-cell cattle embryos were prepared by in vitro oocyte maturation and fertilization (IVM/IVF) and cultured with or without oviductal cells. Embryos were evaluated after 7 days in culture to determine the percentage developing from the 1-cell stage to the morula or blastocyst stage. The combination of glycine (2 mM) and alanine (1 mM) with oviductal cells (experiment 1) improved embryo development over that in control culture (29 vs. 13%; p < 0.05). An optimum response was obtained with 10 mM glycine and 1 mM alanine in coculture (experiments 2 and 3). In experiment 4, the effects of glycine (0 or 10 mM), alanine (0 or 1 mM), and the presence or absence of oviductal cells were tested. In the absence of oviductal cells, the addition of glycine, alanine, or glycine and alanine combined improved embryonic development over that in control medium (45, 33, 42 vs. 24%, p < 0.001, p < 0.05, p < 0.001, respectively). However, the effect of the combination of glycine and alanine was not different from that of glycine alone when oviductal cells were absent (42 vs. 45%, p > 0.10). In the presence of oviductal cells, glycine or the combination of glycine and alanine improved embryonic development over that in the control medium with cells (47, 55 vs. 37%, …

In vitro matured (IVM) bovine oocytes were examined to determine their potential viability in embryo cloning. Activation competence, as monitored by pronuclear formation, increased with oocyte age. Oocytes readily formed a pronucleus when challenged with an electrical pulse 30 h after the onset of maturation. Developmental competence of IVM oocytes tended to increase with oocyte age (P= 0.079). Selection of IVM oocytes on the basis of the presence of a polar body 24 h after the onset of maturation and the size of the follicle from which the oocyte was derived improved development of nuclear transfer embryos (polar body positive …

Research Note: Interactive Effects Of Sodium Zeolite A And Eimeria Acervulina Infection On Growth And Tissue Minerals In Chicks., T. L. Ward, K. L. Watkins, L. L. Southern
Faculty Publications
Two experiments were conducted to assess the interactive effects of dietary sodium zeolite A (SZA) and experimental Eimeria acervulina infection on growth and tissue mineral concentrations in chicks. The average initial weight of the chicks was 71.8 g, and the experimental periods were from 5 to 15 days posthatching. In both experiments, the corn-soybean meal basal diet was supplemented with 0 or .75% SZA and fed to uninfected chicks or to chicks infected with 4 x 10(5) sporulated E. acervulina oocysts on Days 0, 3, and 6 of the experiments. Both coccidial infection and SZA reduced (P < .05) gain and feed intake; however, feed efficiency was reduced (P < .01) only in the coccidiosis-infected chicks. Neither SZA nor the coccidial infection affected (P > .10) plasma Ca …

Effect Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A On Zinc Utilization By Chicks., K. L. Watkins, L. L. Southern
Faculty Publications
Two experiments were conducted with chicks from 5 to 15 days posthatching to study the effect of sodium zeolite A (SZA) on Zn utilization. The corn-soybean meal basal diet was supplemented with ZnCO3 to provide three levels of dietary Zn (35, 40, and 85 ppm) in Experiment 1, and two levels of dietary Zn (85 and 4,000 ppm) in Experiment 2. Experimental diets also contained either 0 or .75% SZA, resulting in a 3 x 2 and a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. The tendency for increased growth, feed intake, and hematocrit …

Although Friedrich Nietzsche was not noted for his views on medical ethics, the above quotation captures the essence of James Lindgren's article. Lindgren posits that the recent O'Connor' and Cruzan decisions signal a shift in the law on the withdrawal or withholding of treatment. He concludes that the requirement set forth in those cases-that an individual must have clearly and convincingly expressed his or her wishes before treatment can be terminated--errs unduly on the side of life. Basing his conclusion primarily on preferences revealed by public opinion polls, he contends that a better rule would be to presume, subject to …
Mortgage Prepayment Clauses: An Economic And Legal Analysis, Dale A. Whitman
Mortgage Prepayment Clauses: An Economic And Legal Analysis, Dale A. Whitman
Faculty Publications
Most mortgages on income-producing real estate (as distinct from owner-occupied housing) contain clauses restricting early payment of the loan. These clauses are highly controversial, and borrowers often resist their enforcement. While other writers have discussed prepayment clauses in the recent legal literature, my objectives in this article are to advance this discussion in three respects: first, to provide an economic perspective on mortgage prepayment as support for a set of legal recommendations; second, to consider whether the bankruptcy of the mortgagor should affect enforceability of a prepayment fee clause; and third, to analyze the cumulative effect of the presence in …

A 20-ton neutrino detector located near the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility beam stop is used search for ν̄e generated via neutrino oscillations from any of the three neutrino types, νμ, ν̄μ, and νe, which radiate from the beam stop. The analysis of three years of data provides limits on the oscillation modes ν̄μ→ν̄e, νe→ν̄e, and νμ→ν̄e, and the lepton-number-violating decay process μ+→e++ν̄e+νμ. The 90%-confidence-level limits for ν̄μ→ν̄e oscillations are δm2≤0.14 eV2 for maximal mixing, and sin22θ≤0.024 for large δm2. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Pulsar measurements performed by the experiment COMPTEL, aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, are described. The main results refer to the Crab and Vela pulsars whose pulse shape characteristics are given in some detail and light curves are compared with those above 50 MeV, as observed by the COS-B satellite. No other gamma-ray pulsars have been detected to date by COMPTEL, the upper limit on the pulsed signal from Geminga being compatible with indications by other experiments. © 1993.

The energy spectrum of galactic cosmic ray Helium was measured in two different balloon experiments launched four days apart from Canada: SMILI‐I on 1‐Sept‐1989 and MASS on 5‐Sept‐1989. A slow Forbush decrease began on 4‐Sept‐1989 and had not reached its maximum at the time of the MASS flight. Comparison of the balloon measurements shows a fractional decrease of 0.37 to 0.15 in the Helium flux between 200 and 450 MeV/nucleon (1.2–2.0 GV). The rigidity dependence is analyzed in two models and found to be steeper than previous observations. Interplanetary particle data and ground‐based Neutron Monitor results are consistent with the …

Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna, Warren W. Johnson, Stephen M. Merkowitz
Faculty Publications
We propose a new type of resonant-mass gravitational wave detector, a truncated icosahedral gravitational wave antenna. It will be omnidirectional, and able to measure the direction and polarization of a detected wave. We solve a model for this system, calculate the strain noise spectrum, and conclude that its angle-averaged energy sensitivity will be 56 times better than the equivalent bar-type antenna with the same noise temperature. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

A radiochemical 71Ga-71Ge experiment to determine the primary flux of neutrinos from the Sun began measurements of the solar neutrino flux at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in 1990. The number of 71Ge atoms extracted from 30 tons of gallium in 1990 and 57 tons in 1991 was measured in twelve runs during the period of January 1990 to December 1991. For the 1990 data, we observed the capture rate to be 20 + 15 -20 (stat) ± 32 (syst) SNU, resulting in a limit of less than 79 SNU (90% CL). This is to be compared with 132 SNU predicted …

We have discovered that R143 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is a luminous blue variable (LBV), the first and perhaps the lone LBV in the central cluster of 30 Doradus, and only the sixth known LMC LBV. Photometric and spectroscopic observations over the past 40 yr indicate that during that time R143 moved redward (changing from an F5 to F8 supergiant), then blueward (possibly becoming as early as O9.5), and is now moving back to the red (currently appearing as a late B supergiant). Similarly, the V magnitude of the star has changed by at least 1.4 mag. Images of …

London Relation And Fluxoid Quantization For Monopole Currents In U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory, Vandana Singh, Richard W. Haymaker, Dana A. Browne
Faculty Publications
We explore the mechanism of quark confinement in four-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory by measuring the color-magnetic current distribution from Dirac magnetic monopoles in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair. Our results give the first direct evidence that the quarks induce a solenoidal current distribution that screens the color-electric flux of the quarks in an electric analogue of the Meissner effect in a superconductor. We show that the vacuum state of U(1) lattice gauge theory obeys both a dual version of the London equation and an electric fluxoid quantization condition. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

SLP1 is a 17.2-kbp genetic element indigenous to the Streptomyces coelicolor chromosome. During conjugation, SLP1 can undergo excision and subsequent site-specific integration into the chromosomes of recipient cells. We report here the localization, nucleotide sequences, and initial characterization of the genes mediating these recombination events. A region of SLP1 adjacent to the previously identified site of integration, attP, was found to be sufficient to promote site-specific integration of an unrelated Streptomyces plasmid. Nucleotide sequence analysis of a 2.2-kb segment of this region reveals two open reading frames that are adjacent to and transcribed toward the attP site. One of these, …

We report the first infrared and optical measurements of the absolute conductivity of FeSi. Above 200 K the ac conductivity of FeSi resembles that of a dirty metal, while at low temperature most of the conductivity below 60 meV is depleted, consistent with an energy gap of that magnitude. Thus in contrast to what is expected from a picture based on simple thermal activation, the gap disappears at a temperature which is low relative to its size. Moreover, the spectral weight lost below the gap does not reappear just above the gap, but is instead distributed over an energy range …

Solutions to both the diffeomorphism and the hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity have been found in the loop representation, which is based on Ashtekar's new variables. While the diffeomorphism constraint is easily solved by considering loop functionals which are knot invariants, there remains the puzzle why several of the known knot invariants are also solutions to the hamiltonian constraint. We show how the Jones polynomial gives rise to an infinite set of solutions to all the constraints of quantum gravity thereby illuminating the structure of the space of solutions and suggesting the existance of a deep connection between quantum gravity …

We find a supersymmetrization of the Bianchi type-IX cosmology in terms of Ashtekar's new variables. This provides a framework for connecting the recent results of Graham and those of Ryan and Moncrief for quantum states of this model. These states are also related to the states obtained particularizing supergravity for a minisuperspace. Implications for the general theory are also briefly discussed. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

We consider a compact source of gravitational waves of frequency, in or near a massive spherically symmetric distribution of matter or a black hole. Recent calculations have led to apparently contradictory results for the influence of the massive body on the propagation of the waves. We show here that the results are in fact consistent and in agreement with the standard viewpoint in which the high-frequency compact source produces the radiation as if in a flat background, and the background curvature affects the propagation of these waves. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

We propose a naive unification of electromagnetism and general relativity based on enlarging the gauge group of Ashtekar's new variables. We construct the connection and loop representations and analyze the space of states. In the loop representation, the wave functions depend on two loops, each of them carrying information about both gravitation and electromagnetism. We find that the Chern-Simons form and the Jones polynomial play a role in the model. © 1993 The American Physical Society.
