Multiple Elements In Human Β-Globin Locus Control Region 5′ Hs 2 Are Involved In Enhancer Activity And Position Independent, Transgene Expression, John J. Caterina, Dominic J. Ciavatta, David Donze, Richard R. Behringer, Tim M. Townes
Faculty Publications
The human β-globin Locus Control Region (LCR) has two important activities. First, the LCR opens a 200 kb chromosomal domain containing the human ε-, γ- and β-giobin genes and, secondly, these sequences function as a powerful enhancer of ε-, γ- and β-globin gene expression. Erythrold-specific, DNase I hypersensitive sites (HS) mark sequences that are critical for LCR activity. Previous experiments demonstrated that a 1.9 kb fragment containing the 5′ HS 2 site confers position-independent expression in transgenic mice and enhances human β-giobin gene expression 100-fold. Further analysis of this region demonstrates that multiple sequences are required for maximal enhancer activity; …

A Multi-Chip Module Implementation Of A Neural Network, Tony R. Martinez, George L. Rudolph, Linton G. Salmon, Matthew G. Stout
Faculty Publications
The requirement for dense interconnect in artificial neural network systems has led researchers to seek high-density interconnect technologies. This paper reports an implementation using multi-chip modules (MCMs) as the interconnect medium. The specific system described is a self-organizing, parallel, and dynamic learning model which requires a dense interconnect technology for effective implementation; this requirement is fulfilled by exploiting MCM technology. The ideas presented in this paper regarding an MCM implementation of artificial neural networks are versatile and can be adapted to apply to other neural network and connectionist models.

The Value Of Salt Marsh Edge Vs Interior As A Habitat For Fish And Decapod Crustaceans In A Louisiana Tidal Marsh, G. W. Peterson, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Flume nets of various lengths and a 3-m seine were used to sample the fishes and macrocrustaceans using a flooded Louisiana salt marsh and the adjacent tidal creek. The experiment allowed for species-specific comparisons of the flooded marsh at the creek edge versus the interior. Of the 37,667 organisms collected in flume nets from January through November 1989, 89% were decapods (nine species) and 11% were fish (29 species). An additional 18,539 organisms (75% decapods and 25% fish) were collected from concurrent seine samples taken from July through November. Comparison of catches among different flume lengths and low tide versus …
A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee
A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee
Faculty Publications
The rationale and outline of an implementation plan for restoring coastal wetlands in Louisiana is presented. The rationale for the plan is based on reversing the consequences of documented cause-and-effect relationships between wetland loss and hydrologic change. The main feature is to modify the extensive interlocking network of dredged spoil deposits, or spoil banks, by reestablishing a more natural water flow at moderate flow velocity (/sec). Guidelines for site selection from thousands of potential sites are proposed. Examples of suitable sites are given for intermediate marshes. These sites exhibit rapid deterioration following partial or complete hydrologic impoundment, implying a strong …
Gift Of Life: The Lawyer's Role In Organ And Tissue Donation, David M. English
Gift Of Life: The Lawyer's Role In Organ And Tissue Donation, David M. English
Faculty Publications
At its 1992 Midyear Meeting, the ABA House of Delegates approved a resolution recommending that individual lawyers and the organized bar play an active role in efforts to relieve the current shortage of donated organs and tissue. When fully implemented, these efforts will involve not only lawyers, but also their clients, health care professionals and the general public. The resolution's most ambitious goal is to make organ and tissue donation part of everyday law practice. Lawyers, as a matter of course, should raise the subject of organ and tissue donation when counselling clients on personal planning. But to educate their …

The Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Gene As A Conditional Negative-Selection Marker Gene In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Mihály Czakó, László Márton
Faculty Publications
The human herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase type 1 gene (HSVtk) acts as a conditional lethal marker in mammalian cells. The HSVtk-encoded enzyme is able to phosphorylate certain nucleoside analogs (e.g. ganciclovir, an antiherpetic drug), thus converting them to toxic DNA replication inhibitors. The utility of HSVtk as a conditional negative-selection marker was explored in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. HSVtk was introduced into Arabidopsis by Agrobaderium-mediated transformation. Transgenic plants were morphologically indistinguishable from wild type and exhibited normal fertility. Canciclovir at lO-5to 10-4 M drastically reduced shoot regeneration on transgenic, HSVtk* root explants …

Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Causatives, Stanley Dubinsky
Predicate Union And The Syntax Of Japanese Causatives, Stanley Dubinsky
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a monoclausal, multipredicate analysis of Japanese causatives, adopting the fundamental assumptions of Relational Grammar. Evidence is provided for the existence of two distinct classes of causatives, distinguished on the basis of the agentivity of the matrix subject. It is also demonstrated that the surface case marking of the causee is constrained by its relative status to the matrix subject with respect to a set of Proto-Agent entailments (as proposed in Dowty 1991).

Partnership Profits Share For Services: An Aggregate Exegesis Of Revenue Procedure 93-27 (Part 1), John W. Lee
Faculty Publications
In this article, Lee charts two alternative methods for implementing an aggregate solution to the problem of partnership profits share exchanged for services. The functional, or judicial, method, he explains, is to handle (1) the exchange of partner-capacity services for a profit share subject to the risk of the venture with the Culbertson "common law relation of partnership," nonrealization event doctrine, implicitly contemplated by the 1984 legislative history to section 707(a)(2); (2) the classic Diamond transitory partner with a substance-over-form rule or step-transaction rule; and (3) a sale of the partnership interest in circumstances that would result in ordinary income …

Proof Of Correctness For Asocs Aa3 Networks, J. Cory Barker, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes adaptive algorithm 3 (AA3) of adaptive self-organizing concurrent systems (ASOCS) and proves that AA3 correctly fulfills the rules presented. Several different models for ASOCS have been developed. AA3 uses a distributed mechanism for implementing rules so correctness is not obvious. An ASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating in parallel. An ASOCS operates in one of two modes: learning and processing. In learning mode, rules are presented to the ASOCS and incorporated in a self-organizing fashion. In processing mode, the ASOCS acts as a parallel hardware circuit that performs the function defined …
Vegetation Studies Of The Amazon Basin Using Enhanced Resolution Seasat Scatterometer Data, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin, Peter T. Whiting
Vegetation Studies Of The Amazon Basin Using Enhanced Resolution Seasat Scatterometer Data, David G. Long, Perry J. Hardin, Peter T. Whiting
Faculty Publications
The Seasat-A scatterometer (SASS) was designed to measure the near-surface wind field over the ocean by inferring the wind from measurements of the surface radar backscatter. While backscatter measurements were also made over land, they have been primarily used for the calibration of the instrument. This has been due in part to the low resolution of the scatterometer measurements (nominally 50 km). In a separate paper the present authors introduced a new method for generating enhanced resolution radar measurements of the Earth's surface using spaceborne scatterometry. In the present paper, the method is used with SASS data to study vegetation …
Religious Devoutness, Impression Management, And Personality Functioning In College Students, P. Scott Richards
Religious Devoutness, Impression Management, And Personality Functioning In College Students, P. Scott Richards
Faculty Publications
Measures of religious devoutness, impression management, and personality adjustment were administered to 178 undergraduate students. Pearson correlations were computed. Greater devoutness (intrinsic religiousness) was associated with more religious and existential well-being, self-control, and social desirability, and with less self-monitoring. Consistent with previous research, the weak positive relation between religious devoutness and social desirability did not generalize to other impression management measures. Evidence which suggests that the relation between religious devoutness and social desirability may be an artifact of religious bias was discussed.
Capacity Of Automated Highway Systems: Effect Of Platooning And Barriers, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall, Bruce Hongola
Capacity Of Automated Highway Systems: Effect Of Platooning And Barriers, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall, Bruce Hongola
Faculty Publications
The concept of Automated Highway Systems (AHS) is based on the belief that an appropriate integration of control and communication technologies placed on the vehicle and on the highway can lead to a large improvement in capacity and safety without requiring a significant amount of additional highway right-of-way. Stemming from this belief are various conceptual scenarios for vehicle/highway automation. An AHS consists of two major components: vehicle/highway automation technology and highway operating strategy. In this paper, we study the capacity of key AHS operating scenarios.

Electromagnetic Characteristics Of Superquadric Wire Loop Antennas, Michael A. Jensen, Yahya Rahmat-Samii
Electromagnetic Characteristics Of Superquadric Wire Loop Antennas, Michael A. Jensen, Yahya Rahmat-Samii
Faculty Publications
The analysis of antenna configurations in the form of a generalized superquadric loop, which includes circular, elliptical and rectangular loop geometries, is presented in this paper. Use of a Galerkin form of the moment method with piecewise sinusoidal subsectional basis and testing functions provides rapid numerical convergence and accurate representation of the antenna current. A convenient parametric representation for the superquadric curve is developed to allow a subsectional formulation using curved wire segments, rather than the commonly employed piecewise linear segments, to construct the geometry. Both magnetic frill and delta gap source models are implemented to allow a detailed study …

Epistemic Decision Theory Applied To Multiple-Target Tracking, Wynn C. Stirling, T. K. Moon, S. E. Budge, J. B. Thompson
Faculty Publications
A decision philosophy that seeks the avoidance of error by trading off belief of truth and value of information is applied to the problem of recognizing tracks from multiple targets (MTT). A successful MTT methodology should be robust in that its performance degrades gracefully as the conditions of the collection become less favorable to optimal operation. By stressing the avoidance, rather than the explicit minimization, of error, the authors obtain a decision rule for trajectory-data association that does not require the resolution of all conflicting hypotheses when the database does not contain sufficient information to do so reliably. This rule, …

Management Buyouts And Small Business Performance: An Exploratory Examination And Research Agenda, Garry D. Bruton, J. Kay Keels, Elton Scifres
Faculty Publications
Management buyout activity is increasingly shifting from large firms to small firms. However, to date, little is known about how such activities impact the performance of small firms. This research has identified a sample of small firms that have undergone a management buyout and found that, relative to other firms in their respective industries, these small buyout firms experienced performance gains similar to those experienced in buyouts of larger firms. Suggestions for extending this area of research are made.

The authors examine the first grade materials in five new basal programs submitted for the 1993 Texas state adoption. These series are compared with program materials currently in use in the state (Copyright 1986/1987). The analysis focuses on features of the pupil texts(e.g., total number of words, number of unique words, readability levels, literary quality) and features of the teachers' editions (e.g., program design, organization, tone). Results of the analysis indicate substantial changes in the more recent series. The findings are interpreted in terms of historical trends as well as recent developments in the literature-based and whole language movements.Implications for future …

Body temperatures and thermoregulatory responses were measured at rest and during submaximal exercise under normal ambient conditions in 11 aerobically-conditioned men (age = 29.2 +/- 6.2 yr, VO2(max) = 3.73 +/- 0.46 min(sup -1), relative body fat = 12.3 +/- 3.7 percent, mean +/- SD) with (CT) and without (NCT) the ingestion of 10 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. Oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), and rectal (T(sub re)) and mean skin (T-bar(sub sk)) temperatures were recorded for 100 minutes starting one minute after ingestion of caffeine or a placebo. Data were collected throughout 30 minutes of …
A Probabilistic Model For Avcs Longitudinal Collision/Safety Analysis, Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall
A Probabilistic Model For Avcs Longitudinal Collision/Safety Analysis, Jacob Tsao, Randolph Hall
Faculty Publications
This paper develops a probabilistic model for analyzing longitudinal collision/safety between an abruptly decelerating vehicle and its immediate follower. The input parameters are the length of the gap between the two vehicles, their common speed prior to the failure, the reaction delay of the following vehicle and a bivariate distribution for the two deceleration rates. The output includes the probability of a collision and the probability distribution of the relative speed at collision time We use this model to compare the safety consequences associated with the platooning and “free-agent” longitudinal-separation rules. We also demonstrate that the free-agent rule implemented with …
Fast Accurate Simulation Of Large Shared Memory Multiprocessors, Bob Boothe Phd
Fast Accurate Simulation Of Large Shared Memory Multiprocessors, Bob Boothe Phd
Faculty Publications
Fast computer simulation is an essential tool in the design of large parallel computers. We discuss the design and performance of our Fast Accurate Simulation Tool, FAST. We start by summarizing the tradeoffs made in the designs of this and other simulators. The key ideas used in this simulator involve execution driven simulation techniques that modify the object code of the application program being studied. This produces an augmented version of the code that is directly executed and performs much of the work of the simulation. We extend the previous work in execution driven simulation by introducing several new uses …

Block Qpsk Modulation Codes With Two Levels Of Error Protection, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin
Block Qpsk Modulation Codes With Two Levels Of Error Protection, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin
Faculty Publications
A class of block QPSK modulation codes for unequal error protection (UEP) is presented. These codes are particularly suitable either for broadcast channels or for communication systems where parts of the information messages are more important than others. An example of the latter is coded speech transmission. Not much is known on the application of block UEP codes in combined coding and modulation schemes. We exhibit a method to combine binary linear UEP (LUEP) block codes of even length, using a Gray mapping, with a QPSK signal set to construct efficient block QPSK modulation codes with nonuniform error protection capabilities …
Constraints On Initial Ahs Deployment And The Concept Definition Of A Shuttle Service For Ahs Debut, Jacob Tsao
Constraints On Initial Ahs Deployment And The Concept Definition Of A Shuttle Service For Ahs Debut, Jacob Tsao
Faculty Publications
Highway automation and its evolution involve a multitude of systems issues. Particularly important and difficult in defining a deployment sequence is the very first step, i.e. the first user service involving fully automated freeway driving. However, this importance and the difficulty imply that many factors may severely constrain the initial deployment. After discussing the paramount importance of initial AHS deployment, this paper points out major high-level issues and constraints. Any realistic deployment strategy must take into consideration gradual technology maturation, introduction of new driver role and diminishing conventional driver role for automated driving, high cost of early-generation automation-equipped vehicles, gradual …

On A Class Of Optimal Nonbinary Linear Unequal-Error-Protection Codes For Two Sets Of Messages, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin
Faculty Publications
Several authors have addressed the problem of designing good linear unequal error protection (LUEP) codes. However, very little is known about good nonbinary LUEP codes. We present a class of optimal nonbinary LUEP codes for two different sets of messages. By combining t-error-correcting ReedSolomon (RS) codes and shortened nonbinary Hamming codes, we obtain nonbinary LUEP codes that protect one set of messages against any t or fewer symbol errors and the remaining set of messages against any single symbol error. For t ≥ 2, we show that these codes are optimal in the sense of achieving the Hamming lower bound …

Two gecko species, Hemidactylus turcicus and Cyrtopodion scabrum, have been introduced into the Port of Galveston, Texas. While H. turcicus has been established for a longer period of time, the relatively recent introduction of C. scabrum near the entrance of the Port has apparently led to the displacement of H. turcicus in that area. This has resulted in a distribution in which the two populations’ are largely allopatric except for a narrow band of sympatry at the periphery of each of their ranges. We examined stomach contents of both species in allopatry and sympatry in order to determine if …
