God's Perspectives On Health, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

As Creator, God knows exactly what it takes to keep the humanbody in excellent health, and because health depends so much onour life-style, God is intimately concerned about how we live. Nowonder, then, that the Bible gives so much sound instruction onhow to maintain our health. As we study God’s Word, we come torealize that many of the current practices of preventive medicinecome straight from Him— medicine is finally catching up with thecounsels of Scripture. Let us take another look at what the Biblesays.

New Light In The Last Days, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of previously-revealed truth which we often refer to as “new light.” Without God’s shedding new light on His revealed Word--the Bible--the Seventh-day Adventist church would not exist.

Applying Lmprovisationbuilder To Interactive Composition With Midi Piano, William Walker, Brian Belet

Faculty Publications

In this presentation we will show how the ImprovisationBuilder framework was adapted to our compositions for pianists and computers. Software design issues include: capturing, transforming, and realizing MIDI piano data, and an easy-to-use graphical interface for altering parameters during performance. Compositional issues include: the causal responsorial aspect of the ImprovisationBuilder output, and varying the small-scale event and gestural levels while preserving the large-scale structure among multiple performances. The presentation will discuss the compositional and performance importance of these issues and show how each of these issues was handled within the ImprovisationBuilder framework. Work on this project suggests the advantages of …

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1996

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

The dramatic postwar decline in the labor force participation of older men in the United States has motivated a sizable body of literature on retirement behavior. Three factors, in particular, have been studied extensively: the growth of the Social Security program (see, for example, Burtless 1986; Burtless and Moffitt 1984; Diamond and Hausman 1984; Hausman and Wise 1985; Sueyoshi 1989), the increased availability and generosity of private pensions (Stock and Wise 1990a, 1990b), and the expansion of federal disability insurance (Bound and Waidmann 1992). One potentially important factor that until recently has not received much attention is the availability of …

On The Future Of Integration Between Skills And Ethics Teaching: Clinical Legal Education In The Year 2010, James E. Moliterno Jan 1996

On The Future Of Integration Between Skills And Ethics Teaching: Clinical Legal Education In The Year 2010, James E. Moliterno

Faculty Publications

Twelve years ago Anthony G. Amsterdam looked into the 21st century for a description of clinical legal education. With the decided advantage of being that much closer to the turn of the century, I think I will take a similar stab. This essay is less a contradiction of Amsterdam's predictions than it is a supplement with the advantages of the passage of time. I will adopt his 21st-century perspective and look at clinical legal education from the vantage point of the year 2010.

Methazolamide For Essential Voice Tremor, Christopher Dromey, Karen Busenbark, L Ramig, William C. Koller Jan 1996

Methazolamide For Essential Voice Tremor, Christopher Dromey, Karen Busenbark, L Ramig, William C. Koller

Faculty Publications

We studied the safety and efficacy of methazolamide (average dose 168 mg/day) in a placebo-controlled blinded investigation in nine patients with essential voice tremor. There were no significant differences for physician or patient clinical rating scores. Digital audio tape recordings showed no difference for amplitude modulation, but frequency modulation was significantly altered by methazolamide. Side effects were common with the drug. We conclude that methazolamide has limited usefulness in the treatment of essential voice tremor.

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike Jan 1996

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small. Andrew Skinner, a colleague of mine at Brigham Young University, …

Chemical Structure Of Coal Tar During Devolatilization, Thomas H. Fletcher, Mathew Watt Jan 1996

Chemical Structure Of Coal Tar During Devolatilization, Thomas H. Fletcher, Mathew Watt

Faculty Publications

Three coals of different rank were pyrolyzed in a drop-tube reactor at a maximum temperature of 900 K and a residence time of 160 ms. The coal and char were analyzed with solid-state 13C NMR. The tar was dissolved in deuterated methylene chloride. It was found that the tar was only partially soluble in CD2Cl2. The nonsoluble tar portion was analyzed in the same manner as the coal and char, while the soluble tar portion was analyzed using a recently developed high-resolution 13CNMRtechnique developed for liquid phases. The tar structure was found to be significantly …

Chen, W., L. D. Smoot, S. C. Hill, And T. H. Fletcher, “Global Rate Expression For Nitric Oxide Reburning. Part 2,” Energy And Fuels, 10, 1046-1052 (1996)., Wei Chen, L Douglas Smoot, Scott C. Hill, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

An investigation of a global reburning-NO reaction, sum(CiHj) + NO => HCN + . . ., which is a reduction pathway of nitric oxide (NO) by reaction with gaseous hydrocarbons, was conducted. The global reburning-NO rate expression was deduced from a combination of elemental reactions. The global rate expression and its rate constants were then determined by correlating predicted species profiles from simple hydrocarbon flames. This global reburning-NO rate constant can be expressed as 2.7x106 exp(-18,800/RT) (gmol/cm3 s). This expression and constants are applicable to atmospheric pressure with an equivalence ratio range of 1.0-2.08 …

A Computational Method For Determining Global Fuel-No Rate Expressions. Part 1, Wei Chen, L Douglas Smoot, Thomas H. Fletcher, Richard D. Boardman

Faculty Publications

Global chemical reaction rates used in the modeling of NOx formation in comprehensive combustion codes have traditionally been obtained through correlation of experimental data. In this paper, a computational approach for obtaining global rates is presented. Several premixed flames were simulated, and sensitivity analysis of species concentration profiles was used to suggest global pathways in fuel-nitrogen conversion to NO. Based on these analyses, the global reaction rates were formulated. The predicted species concentration profiles and their derivatives were then used in the determination of the global rate constants. The correlation of rate constants for the two fuel-NO global rates …

Effects Of Pyrolysis Heating Rate On Intrinsic Reactivities Of Coal Chars, Thomas K. Gale, Calvin H. Bartholomew, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 1996

Effects Of Pyrolysis Heating Rate On Intrinsic Reactivities Of Coal Chars, Thomas K. Gale, Calvin H. Bartholomew, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

The main objective of this work was to determine the effects of pyrolysis heating rate on intrinsic O2 reactivity of coal chars. Relationships of intrinsic reactivity to other pyrolysis conditions and char physical and chemical structure were also investigated, and empirical correlations were obtained. Two different entrained flow reactors (a flat flame methane/air burner and a drop tube reactor) were used to prepare chars under a variety of different pyrolysis conditions at maximum particle temperatures and heating rates of 840-1627 K and 104 to 2x105 K/s, respectively. Intrinsic reactivities of a lignite and two bituminous coal chars …
