Bringing The Analysis Of Electrodeposition Signals In Voltammetry Out Of The Shadows, Devin Rappleye, Ranon G. Fuller
Bringing The Analysis Of Electrodeposition Signals In Voltammetry Out Of The Shadows, Devin Rappleye, Ranon G. Fuller
Faculty Publications
Voltammetry studies of electrodeposition are growing rapidly. Yet, relations for the analysis of electrodeposition reactions in voltammetry remain relatively obscure in the literature. The existing cyclic and square wave voltammetry relations for electrodeposition and their limitations are discussed to increase awareness. A retrospective analysis is performed to demonstrate the impact of model selection in improving the analysis of electrodeposition behavior with voltammetric data. A repository for voltammetry models of electrodeposition is proposed to further increase familiarity and application of the most appropriate models, which would support a rapidly growing area of research and technological development.

A Bit-Parallel Tabu Search Algorithm For Finding Es2 -Optimal And Minimax-Optimal Supersaturated Designs, Luis B. Morales, Dursun A. Bulutoglu

We prove the equivalence of two-symbol supersaturated designs (SSDs) with N (even) rows, m columns, smax=4t+i, where i ∈ {0,2}, t ∈ Z≥0 and resolvable incomplete block designs (RIBDs) whose any two blocks intersect in at most (N+4t+i)/4 points. Using this equivalence, we formulate the search for two-symbol E(s2)-optimal and minimax-optimal SSDs with smax ∈ {2,4,6} as a search for RIBDs whose blocks intersect accordingly. This allows developing a bit-parallel tabu search (TS) algorithm. The TS algorithm found E(s2)-optimal and minimax-optimal SSDs achieving the sharpest known E(s2) lower bound with …

The paper makes an effort to lay out a critical assessment of grain size and its role in limiting strength gains in stable nanocrystalline (NC) metals. In particular, this study uses copper-tantalum binary alloys, in which the predominate mechanisms of grain boundary sliding and rotation are shut down, to decipher the breakdown of classical Hall-Petch behavior and its underlining mechanisms. Through varying grain sizes and tantalum concentrations, the results show Cu–Ta's strength exceeds the traditional strength limits anticipated when strictly applying smaller grain size translates to greater strength than that from the Hall-Petch relationship for NC Cu. Within this work, …

Estimating Intermittency Significance By Means Of Surrogate Data: Implications For Solar Wind Turbulence, Eliza Teodorescu, Marius Mihai Echim, Jay Johnson
Estimating Intermittency Significance By Means Of Surrogate Data: Implications For Solar Wind Turbulence, Eliza Teodorescu, Marius Mihai Echim, Jay Johnson
Faculty Publications
Introduction: Intermittency is a property of turbulent astrophysical plasmas, such as the solar wind, that implies irregularity and fragmentation, leading to non-uniformity in the transfer rate of energy carried by nonlinear structures from large to small scales. We evaluated the intermittency level of the turbulent magnetic field measured by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) in the slow solar wind in the proximity of the Sun during the probe’s first close encounter. Methods: A quantitative measure of intermittency could be deduced from the normalized fourth-order moment of the probability distribution functions, the flatness parameter. We calculated the flatness of the magnetic …

Electrical Charge Method For Balancing, Quantifying, And Defining Redox Reactions, Pong Kau Yuen, Cheng Man Diana Lau

Redox reactions are important in both theoretical studies and practical uses. The concept is also one of the most difficult to teach and learn (Goes, Nogueira & Fernandez, 2020). In general chemistry textbooks, the oxidation number method is a fundamental approach for counting the number of transferred electrons and understanding redox reactions (Tro, 2020; Chang & Goldsby, 2013). Without knowing oxidation number, redox reactions cannot be defined and balanced. Algebraic methods, such as linear simultaneous equations method (Porter, 1985; Olson, 1997; Kolb, 1979) and matrix method (Blakley, 1982; Risteski, 2011), can balance redox reactions, but they cannot define them chemically. …

Baboons (genus Papio) are a morphologically and behaviorally diverse clade of catarrhine monkeys that have experienced hybridization between phenotypically and genetically distinct phylogenetic species. We used high-coverage whole-genome sequences from 225 wild baboons representing 19 geographic localities to investigate population genomics and interspecies gene flow. Our analyses provide an expanded picture of evolutionary reticulation among species and reveal patterns of population structure within and among species, including differential admixture among conspecific populations. We describe the first example of a baboon population with a genetic composition that is derived from three distinct lineages. The results reveal processes, both ancient and recent, …

Figure 5 of the original article contains an error. The error was due to the use of gas-phase NH3 in the calculation of state (i,k‡ l). Adsorbed NH3 should have been used instead because this state occurs prior to NH3 desorption. The error resulted in much larger activation barriers for OH attack on acetyl being depicted in the original Figure 5 for the three facets of ceria. They appear comparable to the barriers of acetic acid desorption, which is inconsistent with the conclusion that product desorption is rate-limiting in this reaction at ambient temperature. The corrected version is shown below …

Nanoparticles are being utilized in agriculture as fertilizers, pesticides, and agrochemical-carriers. Designed to be biocompatible and degradable, biopolymer nanoparticles were developed as an alternative to metallic nanoparticles, and though safe-by-design, polymeric nanoparticles must be field-tested prior to largescale use. Several field studies were conducted to observe detrimental effects of biopolymer nanoparticles on plant growth and yield using soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., as a model system. Biopolymer nanoparticles made from lignin or zein were applied as seed treatments to soybean seeds or as foliar sprays (zein only) to soybean plants. Studies using biopolymer nanoparticle seed treatments (nano-STs) measured the germination …

Haematobia irritans irritans (Linnaeus, 1758: Diptera: Muscidae), the horn fly, is an external parasite of penned and pastured livestock that causes a major economic impact on cattle production worldwide. Pesticides such as synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphates are routinely used to control horn flies; however, resistance to these chemicals has become a concern in several countries. To further elucidate the molecular mechanisms of resistance in horn fly populations, we sequenced the transcriptomes of ten populations of horn flies from the southern US possessing varying degrees of pesticide resistance levels to pyrethroids, organophosphates, and endosulfans. We employed an Illumina paired end HiSeq …

Industrial insect rearing is expected to increase as a feedstock to meet growing global food demand. This will lead to greater production of insect excreta known as frass, a nutrient-dense organic material that has shown promise as a natural fertilizer source with potential environmental benefits. In this study, black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) frass (BSFF) was compared with a synthetic fertilizer (SF) during production of containerized ornamentals grown under greenhouse conditions. Fertilizers were incorporated into a bark-based substrate at 0, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 kg.m–3 nitrogen (N) planted with coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) plugs. Growth index, shoot dry weight, and leaf …

BACKGROUND: The tarnished plant bug Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) is considered the most damaging pest of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in the mid-southern United States. Previous studies have reported the role of different ratios of volatile metathoracic gland components such as hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal in eliciting low-level attraction of L. lineolaris. In this study, we tested different visual cues (colored sticky cards) in combination with olfactory cues (pheromone blends) to optimize the attraction and capture of L. lineolaris in the field. RESULTS: Red-colored sticky cards were more attractive to L. lineolaris adults than white, blue or …

Declining survey response rates have driven many researchers to seek out cost-effective methods of increasing participation, such as conducting surveys online, paying incentives, and using social media to engage hard-to-reach populations. Malicious actors can exploit the monetary incentives and anonymity of online surveys, threatening the integrity of survey data. We share two recent experiences conducting online surveys that were inundated with fraudulent responses. Our objective is to increase awareness of this emerging issue and offer guidance for others to mitigate the effects of fraudulent responders in their own research.

This is a case study comparing outcomes for a probability-based representative sample versus a non-probability convenience sample for the valuation of beach condition information among Gulf of Mexico residents. We test the efficacy of several techniques used to adjust for hypothetical bias and sample weighting to reduce hypothetical willingness to pay (WTP). Weighting makes the WTP between the two samples similar, but model equivalence with respect to the significance of explanatory variables is rejected. The results support the use of certainty follow-ups, which consistently reduced WTP, regardless of the sampling approach or weighting.

Stem borers (Lepidoptera) are common cereal pests. In many parts of the world, the species Ostrinia nubilalis and Sesamia nonagrioides stand out as important insect pests of economically important crops such as maize. Their management relied mainly on transgenic host plant resistance over the last 25 years. Technologies based on the insecticidal properties of Bacillus thuringiensis-derived proteins allowed widespread pest population suppression, especially for O. nubilalis. However, the recent discovery of Bt resistance, which has revitalized interest in both pests’ biology and management, may jeopardize the effectiveness of such transgenic technologies. Historical information on O. nubilalis bionomy may need to …

Ironwood trees (Casuarina equisetifolia) in Guam have been suffering from Ironwood Tree Decline (IWTD) since 2002. Putative plant pathogenic bacteria such as Ralstonia solanacearum and Klebsiella species were identified in the ooze of declining trees and considered to be linked to IWTD. In addition, termites were found to be significantly associated with IWTD. Microcerotermes crassus Snyder (Blattodea: Termitidae) was identified as a termite species that attacks ironwood trees in Guam. Since termites harbor a diverse community of symbiotic and environmental bacteria, we sequenced the microbiome of M. crassus workers attacking ironwood trees in Guam to assess the presence of IWTD-associated …

Predators elicit antipredator behaviors such as proactive and reactive movements in prey, but both are rarely investigated simultaneously. Impacts of human predation risk on antipredator behaviors can be greater than those of nonhuman predators, resulting in increased effects on populations and community structure. We compared the influence of human and nonhuman predation risk on proactive and reactive antipredator movement behaviors of male Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo, hereafter turkey). We used simultaneously collected GPS locations from 31 turkeys and 36 coyotes (Canis latrans) to investigate the antipredator behavior of turkeys to coyotes. To assess antipredator behaviors of turkeys to hunters, …

Coordination in timing of reproduction is driven by multiple ecological and sociobiological processes for a wide array of species. Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) use a male dominance polygynous mating system, where males communicate with females via elaborate courtship displays and vocalizations at display sites. Most females prefer to mate with dominant males; therefore, asynchronous breeding and nesting may occur which can disproportionately influence individual fitness within breeding groups. For female wild turkeys, there are reproductive advantages associated with earlier nesting. As such, we evaluated reproductive asynchrony within and between groups of GPS-tagged female eastern wild turkeys based on …

Ecosystems include diverse taxonomic and functional groups of animals with variable levels of niche overlap that can lead to direct and indirect interactions with positive or negative outcomes. Species feeding at low trophic positions might be sensitive to interactions with co-occurring functional groups (neighbors) that influence their food resources through various processes, such as indirect nutrient subsidies and trophic cascades. Employing a target-neighbor experimental design using large, outdoor mesocosms, we tested whether adding neighbors with different functional traits affected food web compartments relative to a control group that had grazing minnows, Campostoma anomalum (Central Stoneroller). Additionally, we tested whether growth …

Abstract: In this study, lignin containing cellulose nanofiber/glycerol (LCNF/Gly) composite films at different mixing ratios were developed with LCNFs extracted from commercial poplar pulp through 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl radical mediated oxidation followed by high-pressure homogenization. The obtained LCNFs with the diameters ranged from several to tens of nanometers, were decorated with residual hydrophobic lignin nanoparticles (16.31 wt%) around the nanofibers, and showed the reversible aggregation in aqueous solution. With the incorporation of glycerol, the resulting LCNF/Gly films exhibited excellent light management properties, maintaining outstanding optical transmittance (87%) and ultrahigh haze over 92%, with superior ultraviolet (UV) blocking function for UVB and UVC. …

The researchers designed a delayed intervention start randomized controlled trial to compare improvements in functional communication following augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions. The study compared outcomes from function-based applied behavior analytic (ABA) and eclectic non-ABA forms of classroom-based communication strategies (waitlist control) as well as from high- and low-tech forms of AAC.
