The Evolution Of Health Care Decision Making: The Political Paradigm And Beyond, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price
The Evolution Of Health Care Decision Making: The Political Paradigm And Beyond, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price
Faculty Publications
The ascendancy of the political paradigm as the primary mode of health care decision-making is a natural evolutionary reaction to the unrestrained market paradigm. Although a certain of political intrusion into the health care marketplace is both necessary and useful, it has the potential to unravel the efficiencies achieved by managed care. Overzealous intervention in the health care market in the name of "reform" may cause the health care decision-making pendulum to swing back to the provider paradigm, with its tendency to escalate health care costs and diminish access. One possible way to achieve decision-making equilibrium and and end the …

Research over the past decade has focused on ways that parents enhance or constrain the quantity and quality of their children's interactions with peers outside of the immediate family context (e.g., Ladd and Hart 1992; Mize et al. 1995; profiles and Ladd 1994; Russell and Finnie 1990). Much of this work indicates that parenting works in concert with a host of personality, familial, and extra familial variables in ways that facilitate or diminish children's socially competent behavior with peers (Hart et al. 1997). This line of research is important given evidence suggesting that the quality of peer relations stemming from …
Retention Of Administrators In Nursing Homes: What Can Management Do?, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab
Retention Of Administrators In Nursing Homes: What Can Management Do?, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab
Faculty Publications
Annual turnover among nursing home administrators may be 40% or higher. To investigate the factors that could lead to greater administrator retention, responses to a survey (53% response rate) were analyzed using factor analysis and multiple regression models. Results show that higher retention is observed when administrators are allowed to function independently, are involved in decision making, are treated fairly, and are given reasonable goals to achieve. Organizations must hire administrators whose values match theirs. Multifacility chain organizations and for-profit facilities appear to have a greater need to embrace organizational principles that lead to greater job satisfaction.

This paper presents the first analysis of diffractive photon dissociation events in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA in which the proton in the final state is detected and its momentum measured. The events are selected by requiring a scattered proton in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer (LPS) with xL > 0.97, where xL is the fraction of the incoming proton beam momentum carried by the scattered proton. The use of the LPS significantly reduces the contamination from events with diffractive dissociation of the proton into low mass states and allows a direct measurement of t, the square of the four-momentum …

Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETjet). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETjet > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETjet > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 …

Charged particles (h±) and K0 mesons have been studied in photoproduced events containing at least one jet of ET > 8 GeV n a pseudorapidity interval (-0.5, 0.5) in the ZEUS laboratory frame. Distributions are presented in terms of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and distance of the particle from the axis of a jet. The properties of h± within the jet are described well using the standard settings of PYTHIA, but the use of the multiparton interaction option improves the description outside the jets.

Concern over the lack of portability associated with employer-provided health insurance has precipitated a recent flurry of research activity on the effects of health insurance on labor market outcomes. Several estimates suggest that the costs associated with changing doctors and losing coverage for preexisting conditions are sufficient to deter individuals from changing jobs. These costs may be particularly important for older individuals contemplating retirement because a departure from the labor force may involve not only a change in doctors or lack of coverage for preexisting conditions but a complete loss of access to employer-provided group health insurance.

Economic Valuation Models For Insurers, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill
Faculty Publications
Recently much attention has been given to the approaches insurers undertake in valuing their liabilities and assets. For example, in 1994 the American Academy of Actuaries created a Fair Valuation of Liabilities Task Force to address the issue [see Doll et al. (1998), Reitano (1997), Babbel (1997, 1998b), Babbel and Merrill (1996), and Merrill (1997)]. In 1997, the Academy established a Valuation Law Task Force and a Valuation Tools Working Group to investigate the various valuation approaches extant and to recommend the models best suited to the task.
Much of the literature on valuation has focused on the strengths and …

Have you ever wondered what exactly can be considered young adult literature (YAL)? If you've paid much attention to the book world around you lately, you've probably noticed that there seems to be some misunderstanding about what fits the YAL label and what doesn't. Unfortunatelv, this confusion has led some teachers and parents to beliew that YAL is little more than cheap, pulp novels—the kind of stuff English teachers ought to teach their students to avoid. I understand some of the causes of this confusion and, in the space of this issue's column, plan to set things straight.

Maternal and paternal parenting styles and marital interactions linked in childhood aggressive behavior as described in Western psychological literature were measured in an ethnic Russian sample of 207 families of nursery-school-age children. Results corroborated and extended findings from Western samples. Maternal and paternal coercion, lack of responsiveness, and psychological control (for mothers only) were significantly correlated with children's overt aggression with peers. Less responsiveness (for mothers and fathers) and maternal coercion positively correlated with relational aggression. Some of these associations differed for boys versus girls. Marital conflict was also linked to more overt and relational aggression for boys. When entered …
Modeling Soot Derived From Pulverized Coal, Alexander L. Brown, Thomas H. Fletcher
Modeling Soot Derived From Pulverized Coal, Alexander L. Brown, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A semiempirical model has been developed for predicting coal-derived soot. The main feature of the model is a transport equation for soot mass fraction. Tar prediction options include either an empirical or a transport equation approach, which directly impacts the source term for soot formation. Also, the number of soot particles per unit mass of gas may be calculated using either a transport equation or an assumed average. Kinetics are based on Arrhenius rates taken from published measurements. Radiative properties are calculated as a function of averaged optical constants, predicted gas temperatures, predicted gas densities, and the soot mass fractions. …

Summary: Noninvasive measures of vocal fold activity are useful for describing normal and disordered voice production. Measures of open and speed quotient from glottal airflow and electroglottographic (EGG) waveforms have been used to describe timing events associated with vocal fold vibration. To date, there has been little consistency in the measurement criteria used to calculate quotient values. In this study, criteria of 20% and 50% were applied to the AC amplitude of glottal airflow and inverted EGG waveforms for measurement of open quotient. Criteria of 20%, 50%, and 80%, and a midslope criterion that segmented the waveform between 20% and …

Intentional Changes In Sound Pressure Level And Rate: Their Impact On Measures Of Respiration, Phonation, And Articulation, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig
Faculty Publications
The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of changing sound pressure level (SPL) and rate on respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory behavior during sentence production. Ten subjects, 5 men and 5 women, repeated the sentence, "I sell a sapapple again," under 5 SPL and 5 rate conditions. From a multi-channel recording, measures were made of lung volume (LV), SPL, fundamental frequency (F0), semitone standard deviation (STSD), and upper and lower lip displacements and peak velocities. Loud speech led to increases in LV initiation, LV termination, F0, STSD, and articulatory displacements and peak velocities for both lips. Token-to-token variability …

You wanted to know what we waited to move for, wrote Sidney Tanner, an early Mormon pioneer, to his family in the East. "It was to go to a land of freedom where we could enjoy the peace of society and our liberty. We did not want to live in a country where there was no peace, no liberty and its citizens [were] not allowed their rights." So much has been written about the Mormon Trail that one wonders if there is anything of consequence to be said. Surely all the prominent details are well known. And were it not …

We have extended two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy to the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region, to accurately measure the He 11S-21S transition at 120 nm. Our result is 4984872315(48) MHz. This yields a ground state Lamb shift of 41104(48) MHz, in fair agreement with theory and other experiments. This approach has the potential for significantly better accuracy once improvements in the laser and the wavelength metrology are implemented.

Using 40 ns laser pulses, we probe the real-time dynamics of ultracold ionizing collisions in metastable xenon. We time resolve both shielding and enhancement effects, and observe the production of Xe2^+ molecular ions through associative ionization. We estimate the rate of molecule formation in excited-state collisions, and directly measure the role of both flux enhancement and excited state survival in the collisional enhancement process. Conceptually simple theoretical models are used to predict the dynamics of the collisional shielding.

Macros By Example In A Graphical Uims, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Jonathan Turner, Stephen Bart Wood, John R. Dance
Faculty Publications
A macro facility that allows end users to extend interactive graphical applications is presented as part of a user-interface management system (UIMS). Such macros are expressed by example; that is, the end user programs the macro in the application's generated user interface. Problems with macros-by-example in graphical applications are explored, and requirements to accommodate such a facility are defined for the UIMS dialogue model. Existing UIMS models are reviewed relative to these requirements, and the unique facilities of the MIKE (menu interaction kontrol environment) semantics-based model are presented. The implementation of the macro-by-example system is discussed, as well as the …

The Orientation Toward Domestic Labor Questionnaire: Exploring Dual-Earner Wives' Sense Of Fairness About Family Work, Alan J. Hawkins, Christina M. Marshall, Sarah M. Allen
Faculty Publications
This study explored the psychometric properties of the Orientation Toward Domestic Labor Questionnaire (ODL-Q) with a sample of 622 dual-earner wives. Adequate internal consistency reliability was obtained for most of the construct in the ODL-Q. In addition, construct validity for the ODL-Q was provided with multiple regression and discriminant analyses of the constructs' relationships to wives' sense of fairness about family work. The ODL-Q scales accounted for 57% of the variance in wives' sense of fairness. Effective communication about domestic labor (expressions of appreciation, sympathetic listening, mutual decision making) was by far the most powerful predictor and discriminator of fairness. …

Greater numbers of students with increasingly serious psychological problems are served each year by college counseling centers. This fact, coupled with the threat of dwindling resources, underscores the need to improve evaluation procedures and accountability for counseling center services. This includes the identification of an appropriate assessment device, supported by adequate psychometric data, that addresses the variety of problems faced by college students. The College Adjustment Scales (CAS; Anton & Reed, 1991) is a multidimensional inventory designed specifically for use in college and university counseling centers. It consists of 108 items that yield scores on nine scales: Anxiety, Depression, Suicidal …

Electro-Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Wall: Density Profiles And Wall Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
Growth of polymer density in an electro-deposition model of polymer chains on an impenetrable wall is studied on a two dimensional discrete lattice using a Monte Carlo simulation. Polymer-polymer repulsion and polymer-wall attraction for the adsorbing wall (along with the neutral and repulsive interactions) are considered in an external field. Effects of the field strength (B), temperature (T), and chain length (L-c) on the density profile of the polymer chains and wall coverage are investigated. The spatial density profile shows onset of oscillation near the wall at a characteristic field (B-c) which depends on chain length and temperature, In low …
Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Faculty Publications
In order to be useful, a learning algorithm must be able to generalize well when faced with inputs not previously presented to the system. A bias is necessary for any generalization, and as shown by several researchers in recent years, no bias can lead to strictly better generalization than any other when summed over all possible functions or applications. This paper provides examples to illustrate this fact, but also explains how a bias or learning algorithm can be “better” than another in practice when the probability of the occurrence of functions is taken into account. It shows how domain knowledge …

A new simple Young diagrammatic method for Kronecker products of O(n) and Sp(2m) is proposed based on the representation theory of Brauer algebras. A general procedure for the decomposition of the tensor products of representations for O(n) and Sp(2m) is outlined, which is similar to that for U(n) known as the Littlewood rules, together with trace contractions from a Brauer algebra and some modification rules given by King.

Local Data Assimilation In Specification Of Open Boundary Conditions, Igor Shulman
Local Data Assimilation In Specification Of Open Boundary Conditions, Igor Shulman
Faculty Publications
A data assimilation approach to specify open boundary conditions is proposed. The boundary values are determined from the solution of the special optimization problem: minimization of the difference between the model and reference boundary values under the integral constraints on the open boundary. These constraints represent the energy, momentum, and mass fluxes through the open boundary. Reference values represent the a priori knowledge about the boundary values. They might be derived from observations, results of another model run, or from another approach to the specification of open boundary conditions. Optimized open boundary conditions are presented in detail for the barotropic …
