Influence Of Calcium Silicate And Sterilization On The Natural Suppressiveness And On The Conduciveness Of Two Soils To Rhizoctonia Solani, Fabrício De Ávila Rodrigues, Gilberto Fernandes Corrêa, Caspar Henrique Korndörfer, Maria Amelia Dos Santos, Lawrence Elliot Datnoff
Faculty Publications
The effect of calcium silicate slag and soil sterilization on the natural suppressiveness of a Typic Acrustox (clay Dark Red Latosol - LEa) and the natural conduciveness of an Oxic Haplustoll (TRe) to Rhizoctonia solani were studied under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was a three-replicate completely randomized one, with 2 × 3 × 2 factorial combination of the following treatments: two soil kinds (LEa and TRe, collected at 0-20 cm layer); three treatments with and without soil sterilization, calcium silicate slag and nontreated control; and uninfested and infested with R. solani. Each soil material was infested previously with 800 …

Toxicity Of Selected Insecticides To Fall Armyworms (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) In Laboratory Bioassay Studies, J. J. Adamczyk, B. R. Leonard, J. B. Graves
Faculty Publications
Efficacy of conventional and experimental insecticides against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), was evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In a laboratory diet bioassay, third instars of a laboratory-strain were more susceptible to novel insecticides, including chlorfenapyr, methoxyfenozide, spinosad, and tebufenozide, than to a recommended insecticide, thiodicarb. In other laboratory bioassays, fall armyworms were fed field grown cotton leaves, white flowers, or bolls treated with one of two recommended insecticides, L-cyhalothrin or thiodicarb, or one of four experimental insecticides, chlorfenapyr, emamectin benzoate, methoxyfenozide, or spinosad. First instar mortality was significantly greater on leaves treated with chlorfenapyr, L-cyhalothrin, or thiodicarb …

Faculty Publications
Field cage studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to measure the effects of late season beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hubner), infestations (0, 1, 3, and 6 egg masses per 5.1 m row) on defoliation, fruit damage, and yield of cotton. Significantly higher light penetration through the cotton canopy was observed in most infested plots compared with non-infested control plots. A trend for higher numbers of damaged fruiting forms (squares and bolls) with increases in egg mass density was observed. There were no significant differences in the number of damaged fruiting forms among treatments, however, plots infested with 1, 3, …
Susceptibility Of Different Instars Of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Diet Containing Bacillus Thuringiensis, Fangneng Huang, Lawrent L. Buschman, Randall A. Higgins
Susceptibility Of Different Instars Of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Diet Containing Bacillus Thuringiensis, Fangneng Huang, Lawrent L. Buschman, Randall A. Higgins
Faculty Publications
The relative susceptibility of different instars of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), to a commercial formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner subsp. kurstaki, Dipel ES, was determined using diet incorporation. European corn borers exposed to Dipel during the 1st instar were much more susceptible than were older larvae. No significant differences in susceptibility were found among 3rd, 4th, and 5th instars at doses of 0.03-0.81 ml of Dipel per kilogram of diet. At high concentrations (2.43 ml/km of diet), 5th instars had significantly lower mortality than did 3rd or 4th instars. The LC50 and LC90 of the 5th instars …
Thickness Of Knots, R. A. Litherland, J. Simon, O. Durumeric, E. Rawdon
Thickness Of Knots, R. A. Litherland, J. Simon, O. Durumeric, E. Rawdon
Faculty Publications
Classical knot theory studies one-dimensional filaments; in this paper we model knots as more physically "real", e.g., made of some "rope" with nonzero thickness. A motivating question is: How much length of unit radius rope is needed to tie a nontrivial knot? For a smooth knot K, the "injectivity radius" R(K) is the supremum of radii of embedded tubular neighborhoods. The "thickness" of K, a new measure of knot complexity, is the ratio of R(K) to arc-length. We relate thickness to curvature, self-distance, distortion, and (for knot types) edge-number. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Image Segmentation With A Finite Element Method, Blaise Bourdin
Image Segmentation With A Finite Element Method, Blaise Bourdin
Faculty Publications
The Mumford-Shah functional for image segmentation is an original approach of the image segmentation problem, based on a minimal energy criterion. Its minimization can be seen as a free discontinuity problem and is based on Γ-convergence and bounded variation functions theories. Some new regularization results, make possible to imagine a finite element resolution method. In a first time, the Mumford-Shah functional is introduced and some existing results are quoted. Then, a discrete formulation for the Mumford-Shah problem is proposed and its Γ-convergence is proved. Finally, some numerical results, computed from both artificial and real images are presented and discussed.

The Condition Number Of The Schur Complement In Domain Decomposition, Susanne C. Brenner
The Condition Number Of The Schur Complement In Domain Decomposition, Susanne C. Brenner
Faculty Publications
It is shown that for elliptic boundary value problems of order 2m the condition number of the Schur complement matrix that appears in nonoverlapping domain decomposition methods is of order d h , where d measures the diameters of the subdomains and h is the mesh size of the triangulation. The result holds for both conforming and nonconforming finite elements. -1 -2m+1
Balancing Domain Decomposition For Nonconforming Plate Elements, Susanne C. Brenner, Li Yeng Sung
Balancing Domain Decomposition For Nonconforming Plate Elements, Susanne C. Brenner, Li Yeng Sung
Faculty Publications
In this paper the balancing domain decomposition method is extended to nonconforming plate elements. The condition number of the preconditioned system is shown to be bounded by C[1 + ln(H/h)] , where H measures the diameters of the subdomains, h is the mesh size of the triangulation, and the constant C is independent of H, h and the number of subdomains. 2
Close-Limit Approximation To Neutron Star Collisions, Gabrielle D. Allen, Jorge A. Pullin
Close-Limit Approximation To Neutron Star Collisions, Gabrielle D. Allen, Jorge A. Pullin
Faculty Publications
We develop a close-limit approximation to the head-on collision of two neutron stars similar to that used to treat the merger of black hole binaries. This approximation can serve as a useful benchmark test for future fully non-linear studies. For neutron star binaries, the close-limit approximation involves assuming that the merged object can be approximated as a perturbed, stable neutron star during the ring-down phase of the coalescence. We introduce a prescription for the construction of initial data sets, discuss the physical plausibility of the various assumptions involved, and briefly investigate the character of the gravitational radiation produced during the …

We calculate an estimate of the gravitational radiation emitted when two equal mass black holes coalesce at the end of their binary inspiral, using several approximations based on considering the holes close to each other. A shortcoming of our method is that it is limited to models forming final holes with slow rotation, but our results clearly suggest a trend for larger angular momenta. We find that about 1% of the mass energy of the pair will emerge as gravitational waves during the final stages of the collision and that a negligible fraction of the angular momentum will be radiated. …

Collision Of Boosted Black Holes: Second Order Close Limit Calculations, Carlos O. Nicasio, Reinaldo J. Gleiser, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We study the head-on collision of black holes starting from unsymmetrized, Brill-Lindquist type data for black holes with non-vanishing initial linear momentum. Evolution of the initial data is carried out with the “close limit approximation,” in which small initial separation and momentum are assumed, and second-order perturbation theory is used. We find agreement that is remarkably good, and that in some ways improves with increasing momentum. This work extends a previous study in which second order perturbation calculations were used for momentarily stationary initial data, and another study in which linearized perturbation theory was used for initially moving holes. In …

Transient negative ions (resonances) formed during the collision of an electron with an atom or molecule have been extensively studied for over thirty years. The continued interest in these states, both experimentally and theoretically, stems from the profound effects that they can have on electron scattering cross sections and the role that electron-electron correlations play in their formation and quasi-stability. A selective discussion of examples of such resonances, involving one, two and three excited electrons is given for a wide range of atomic and molecular systems. © CSIRO 1999.

Physicochemical Influences On Parasites Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Randy C. Landry, William E. Kelso
Faculty Publications
We investigated prevalence and intensity patterns of nine parasite taxa in 244 age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) collected from lake (high dissolved oxygen levels), riverine (high current velocities), and swamp (hypoxic canals and bayous) sites (N=6) in the Atchafalaya River Basin during the 1996 flood pulse. Ectoparasites were dominated by monogenetic trematodes (prevalence=100%; median intensities 27–91 per host) and glochidia (prevalence > 96% at all sites, median intensities 47–148 per host), whereas Posthodiplostomum minimum (Trematoda), Caecincola spp. (Trematoda; C. parvulus and perhaps C. latostoma), Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus (Acanthocephala), and Proteocephalus ambloplitis (Cestoda) accounted for 94.6% of bass endoparasites. Overall, lake sites supported …
Bird Communities In Two Types Of Anthropogenic Successional Vegetation In Central Amazonia, Sérgio Henrique Borges, Philip C. Stouffer
Bird Communities In Two Types Of Anthropogenic Successional Vegetation In Central Amazonia, Sérgio Henrique Borges, Philip C. Stouffer
Faculty Publications
When primary forest in central Amazonia is cut and abandoned, the plant succession is dominated by Cecropia spp., whereas when it is cut and burned for pastures, the regrowth vegetation is dominated by Vismia spp. The bird communities of these two regrowth forest types were sampled at six sites (9-13 years old) using mist-nets and observations. Bird species richness was similar between the two forest types. Cecropia regrowth, however, was richer for strictly forest bird species than was Vismia regrowth. Mixed-flock species and ant-following birds were significantly more abundant in the Cecropia second growth, whereas nonforest insectivores and omnivores were …

Certification In Honduras: Perspectives Of Wood Product Manufacturers, Consumers, Ngos And Government Forest Policymakers, Richard P. Vlosky, Juan Antonio Aguirre, Edna Carolina Soihet Montes, Lucie K. Ozanne, Gabriela Silva
Faculty Publications
Although research has been conducted that examines certification issues from stakeholder perspectives in temperate forest regions, very little has been done in tropical supplier countries. This study identifies key certification issues in Honduras, a Central American producer and exporter of forest products. Five stakeholder groups were studied: primary wood products manufacturers, secondary manufacturers, government forestry policymakers, non-governmental organizations and consumers. Results indicate that there a general lack of awareness about certification, an increasing willingness-to-pay for certification as one moves from the forest to the consumer, the need for transparency in the process, and the belief that certification should be conducted …

Sweetpotato Clone Tolerance To Weed Interference, Don R. La Bonte, Howard F. Harrison, Carl E. Motsenbocker
Faculty Publications
Field experiments were conducted to assess how sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] clones interfere with weeds and how clones tolerate weed interference. Eleven clones with architecturally different canopies were evaluated for yield, canopy surface area and dry mass, weed dry mass, and light interception at ground level. A 2-fold difference in ground area covered by canopy surface area was observed among the eleven clones 42 days after planting, and a 3-fold difference in canopy dry mass at harvest. Yields were reduced from 14% to 68% by weed interference. The yields of high-yielding clones, 'Beauregard', 'Excel', L87-125, 'Regal', 'Centennial', and W-274, …
Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, David J. Tannor, Sophya V. Garashchuk
Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, David J. Tannor, Sophya V. Garashchuk
Faculty Publications
Calculation of chemical reaction rates lies at the very core of theoretical chemistry. The essential dynamical quantity which determines the reaction rate is the energy-dependent cumulative reaction probability, N(E), whose Boltzmann average gives the thermal rate constant, k(T). Converged quantum mechanical calculations of N(E) remain a challenge even for three- and four-atom systems, and a longstanding goal of theoreticians has been to calculate N(E) accurately and efficiently using semiclassical methods. In this article we present a variety of methods for achieving this goal, by combining semiclassical initial value …

The Expressive Function Of Succession Law And The Merits Of Non-Marital Inclusion, E. Gary Spitko
The Expressive Function Of Succession Law And The Merits Of Non-Marital Inclusion, E. Gary Spitko
Faculty Publications
Intestacy statutes seek to further donative freedom by effectuating the attributed intent of those who fail to execute a valid estate plan during life. One might reasonably hypothesize that gay men and lesbians, on the whole, differ from the non-gay majority with respect to their donative intent. The fundamental difference in romantic and affectional preferences between gay people and non-gay people is likely to produce such a disparate donative intent. Much anecdotal evidence and recent empirical evidence strongly support this hypothesis.
Article II of the Uniform Probate Code presently ignores the existence of gay men and lesbians, despite the drafters' …

Judge Not: In Defense Of Minority-Culture Arbitration, E. Gary Spitko
Faculty Publications
Arbitration can serve as a necessary safe harbor from procedural and substantive cultural bias in the general public courts. Arbitration also can serve as a laboratory for process reforms as cultural minorities attempt to craft rules that better govern their lives than do the purportedly “one size fits all” rules that the majority has crafted. In so allowing cultural minorities to structure their lives and legal disputes in ways that reflect their particular needs, minority-culture arbitration also has great potential for habituating the general public to the realities of the lives of cultural minorities and to the notion that custom-made …
