Su(3) Symmetry Breaking In Lower [Formula Presented]-Shell Nuclei, V. G. Gueorguiev, J. P. Draayer, C. W. Johnson Jan 2001

Su(3) Symmetry Breaking In Lower [Formula Presented]-Shell Nuclei, V. G. Gueorguiev, J. P. Draayer, C. W. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Results of shell-model calculations for lower [Formula Presented]-shell nuclei show that SU(3) symmetry breaking in this region is driven by the single-particle spin-orbit splitting. However, even though states of the yrast band exhibit SU(3) symmetry breaking, the results also show that the yrast band [Formula Presented] values are insensitive to this fragmentation of the SU(3) symmetry; specifically, the quadrupole collectivity as measured by [Formula Presented] transition strengths between low lying members of the yrast band remain high even though SU(3) appears to be broken. Results for [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] using the Kuo-Brown-3 two-body interaction are given to illustrate …

Interband B (E2) Transition Strengths In Odd-Mass Heavy Deformed Nuclei, C. E. Vargas, J. G. Hirsch, J. P. Draayer Jan 2001

Interband B (E2) Transition Strengths In Odd-Mass Heavy Deformed Nuclei, C. E. Vargas, J. G. Hirsch, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

Interband B(E2) transition strengths between different normal parity bands in 163Dy and 165Er are described using the pseudo-SU(3) model. The Hamiltonian includes Nilsson single-particle energies, quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions with fixed, parametrized strengths, and three extra rotor terms used to fine tune the energy spectra. In addition to interband transitions, the energy spectra and the ground state intraband B(E2) strengths are reported. The results show the pseudo-SU(3) shell model to be a powerful microscopic theory for a description of the normal parity sector in heavy deformed odd-A nuclei.

Quantum Measurement And Decoherence, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O’Connell Jan 2001

Quantum Measurement And Decoherence, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O’Connell

Faculty Publications

Distribution functions defined in accordance with the quantum theory of measurement are combined with results obtained from the quantum Langevin equation to discuss decoherence in quantum Brownian motion. Closed form expressions for wave packet spreading and the attenuation of coherence of a pair of wave packets are obtained. The results are exact within the context of linear passive dissipation. It is shown that, contrary to widely accepted current belief, decoherence can occur at high temperature in the absence of dissipation. Expressions for the decoherence time with and without dissipation are obtained that differ from those appearing in earlier discussions. © …

Cure For Unstable Numerical Evolutions Of Single Black Holes: Adjusting The Standard Adm Equations In The Spherically Symmetric Case, Bernard Kelly, Pablo Laguna, Keith Lockitch, Jorge Pullin, Erik Schnetter, Deirdre Shoemaker, Manuel Tiglio Jan 2001

Cure For Unstable Numerical Evolutions Of Single Black Holes: Adjusting The Standard Adm Equations In The Spherically Symmetric Case, Bernard Kelly, Pablo Laguna, Keith Lockitch, Jorge Pullin, Erik Schnetter, Deirdre Shoemaker, Manuel Tiglio

Faculty Publications

Numerical codes based on a direct implementation of the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formulation of Einstein's equations have generally failed to provide long-term stable and convergent evolutions of black hole space-times when excision is used to remove the singularities. We show that, for the case of a single black hole in spherical symmetry, it is possible to circumvent these problems by adding terms involving the constraints to the evolution equations, thus adjusting the standard ADM system. We investigate the effect that the choice of the lapse and shift has on the stability properties of numerical simulations and thus on the form …

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson Jan 2001

Differential Detection Of Bartonella Species And Strains In Cat Scratch Disease Diagnostics By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of 16s Ribosomal Rna Gene, Ronald A. Tapp, Alma F. Roy, Richard E. Corstvet, Vincent L. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Cat scratch disease (CSD) has been difficult to diagnose in animals because of the protracted clinical course of infection and the quiescent phases when the microbial culprit lies dormant. The causative agent in CSD appears to be multiple species and strains of Bartonella. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for amplification of highly variable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence, a very sensitive species- and strain-specific assay for CSD-causing Bartonella species was developed. PCR primers were designed to specifically amplify the 16S rRNA gene of Bartonella species but not of other microbial pathogens. This initial PCR was …

Monodromy Of Fiber-Type Arrangements And Orbit Configuration Spaces, Daniel C. Cohen Jan 2001

Monodromy Of Fiber-Type Arrangements And Orbit Configuration Spaces, Daniel C. Cohen

Faculty Publications

We prove similar theorems concerning the structure of bundles involving complements of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements and orbit configuration spaces. These results facilitate analysis of the fundamental groups of these spaces, which may be viewed as generalizations of the Artin pure braid group. In particular, we resolve two disparate conjectures. We show that the Whitehead group of the fundamental group of the complement of a fiber-type arrangement is trivial, as conjectured by Aravinda, Farrell, and Rouchon [AFR]. For the orbit configuration space corresponding to the natural action of a finite cyclic group on the punctured plane, we determine the structure of …

Soliton Excitations As Emitted Clusters On Nuclear Surfaces, R. A. Gherghescu, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer Jan 2001

Soliton Excitations As Emitted Clusters On Nuclear Surfaces, R. A. Gherghescu, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

This work reports on calculations of the deformation energy of a nucleus for nonlinear deformations. The working hypothesis is that, beyond the usual linear approximation, the nonlinear analysis yields soliton solutions moving on its surface. The potential barrier against the emission of a soliton is calculated within the macroscopic-microscopic method. The outer turning point of the barrier determines limitations on the geometrical and kinematical parameters for the formation of a surface soliton. For large asymmetry, the two-centre shell model is used to assign a structure to the soliton. Calculations for 248No with the emission of a 40Ca soliton …

Semiclassical Application Of The Mo/Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light Jan 2001

Semiclassical Application Of The Mo/Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light

Faculty Publications

Mo/ller operators in the formulation of reaction probabilities in terms of wave packet correlation functions allow us to define the wave packets in the interaction region rather than in the asymptotic region of the potential surface. We combine Mo/ller operators with the semiclassical propagator of Herman and Kluk. This does not involve further approximations and can be used with any initial value representation (IVR) semiclassical propagator. Time propagation in asymptotic regions of the potential due to Mo/ller operators reduces the oscillations of the propagator integrand and improves convergence of the results with respect to the number of trajectories. The effectiveness …

Granting Forgiveness Or Harboring Grudges: Implications For Emotion, Physiology, And Health, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, Kelly L. Vander Laan

Faculty Publications

Interpersonal offenses frequently mar relationships. Theorists have argued that the responses victims adopt toward their offenders have ramifications not only for their cognition, but also for their emotion, physiology, and health. This study examined the immediate emotional and physiological effects that occurred when participants (35 females, 36 males) rehearsed hurtful memories and nursed grudges (i.e., were unforgiving) compared with when they cultivated empathic perspective taking and imagined granting forgiveness (i.e., were forgiving) toward real-life offenders. Unforgiving thoughts prompted more aversive emotion, and significantly higher corrugator (brow) electromyogram (EMG), skin conductance, heart rate, and blood pressure changes from baseline. The EMG, …

In Defense Of Civil Redress: The Domestic Enforcement Of Human Rights Norms In The Context Of The Proposed Hague Judgments Convention, Beth Van Schaack Jan 2001

In Defense Of Civil Redress: The Domestic Enforcement Of Human Rights Norms In The Context Of The Proposed Hague Judgments Convention, Beth Van Schaack

Faculty Publications

At the time this Article was written, delegations from forty-five countries were in the process of drafting the Convention on Jurisdiction and Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters ("the Hague Convention") under the auspices of the Hague Conference on Private International Law. [Since the writing of this Article, the drafters significantly scaled back the project, which now addresses only commercial disputes. Prior to this change of emphasis, drafters adopted draft text similar to that advocated in this Article.] The Hague Convention sought to establish a foundation for a worldwide regime for the free enforcement of civil judgments in exchange …

Bridging The Divide: An Alternative Approach To International Labor Rights After The Battle Of Seattle, Stephen F. Diamond Jan 2001

Bridging The Divide: An Alternative Approach To International Labor Rights After The Battle Of Seattle, Stephen F. Diamond

Faculty Publications

The massive protest by labor, human rights, and environmental activists at the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in Seattle in late 1999 was a singular event in global trade politics. It represented a major setback for the proponents of free trade and for the "globalization" process itself. It reflected, and has now influenced, the contours of American domestic politics as well. At the heart of the Seattle events was a new coalition between trade unions, led by the American AFL-CIO, and a wide range of protest groups and non-governmental organizations. This new coalition represents a potent force but …

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos Jan 2001

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos

Faculty Publications

The reading process in comics is an extension of text. In text alone the process of reading involves word-to-image conversion. Comics accelerate that by providing the image. When properly executed, it goes beyond conversion and speed and becomes a seamless whole. In every sense, this misnamed form of reading is entitled to be regarded as literature because the images are employed as a language. There is a recognizable relationship to the iconography and pictographs of oriental writing. When this language is employed as a conveyance of ideas and information, it separates itself from mindless visual entertainment. This makes comics a …

Using Upper Boundary Constraints To Quantify Competitive Response Of Desert Annuals, Laura M. Lessin, Andrew R. Dyer, Deborah E. Goldberg

Faculty Publications

Using a target-neighborhood approach with six annual dicot species in the Negev Desert of Israel, we tested whether neighborhood biomass constrained the upper limit of plant performance and if the slope of the upper boundary was correlated to species trait means, such as relative growth rate (RGR) and seed mass. Target individuals were measured in early spring and then collected at the onset of the dry season along with all naturally occurring neighbors within a 5-cm radius of the target. Using a minimum of 50 samples for each of the six target species, we found no significant relationships between target …

The Determinants Of Successful Micro-Ipos: An Analysis Of Issues Made Under The Small Corporate Offering Registration (Scor) Procedure, James C. Brau, Jerome S. Osteryoung

Faculty Publications

In this article we extend the existing IPO literature to the case of micro-IPOs by analyzing a sample of Small Corporate Offering Registration (SCOR) documents from the U.S. state ofWashington. Through theory, we identified variables that should impact the probability of success or failure in a SCOR offering and then empirically tested them. Empirical support was found for the relevance of (1) marketing mechanisms and expenses; (2) ownership and governance factors; (3) business life cycle stages; and (4) signaling factors consistent with our theoretical predictions.
