Feedforward reduction of microseism disturbance in a long-based interometric gravitational-wave detector was discussed. Laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) which has a 4 km base-line detectors was used. Results showed that the root mean-squared displacement near 0.15 Hz can be reduced by 10 dB.

Effect Of An External Field On Decoherence, R. F. O’Connell, Jian Zuo Jan 2003

Effect Of An External Field On Decoherence, R. F. O’Connell, Jian Zuo

Faculty Publications

“Decoherence of quantum superpositions through coupling to engineered reservoirs” is the topic of a recent paper by Myatt et al. [Nature 403, 269 (2000)] which has attracted much interest because of its relevance to current research in fundamental quantum theory, quantum computation, teleportation, entanglement, and the quantum-classical interface. However, the preponderance of theoretical work on decoherence does not consider the effect of an external field. Here, we present an analysis of such an effect in the case of the random [Formula Presented]-correlated force discussed by Myatt et al. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

Canonical Quantization Of General Relativity In Discrete Space-Times, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Jan 2003

Canonical Quantization Of General Relativity In Discrete Space-Times, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

It has long been recognized that lattice gauge theory formulations, when applied to general relativity, conflict with the invariance of the theory under diffeomorphisms. We analyze discrete lattice general relativity and develop a canonical formalism that allows one to treat constrained theories in Lorentzian signature space-times. The presence of the lattice introduces a “dynamical gauge” fixing that makes the quantization of the theories conceptually clear, albeit computationally involved. The problem of a consistent algebra of constraints is automatically solved in our approach. The approach works successfully in other field theories as well, including topological theories. A simple cosmological application exhibits …

Diel Vertical Migration Of Cladocerans And Copepods In The Atchafalaya River Basin Floodplain, William E. Kelso, D. Allen Rutherford, Norman L. Davidson Jan 2003

Diel Vertical Migration Of Cladocerans And Copepods In The Atchafalaya River Basin Floodplain, William E. Kelso, D. Allen Rutherford, Norman L. Davidson

Faculty Publications

We used bal and nocturnal zooplankton collections at 30 sites in the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) floodplain (Louisiana) to assess inter-habitat differences in diel vertical movements of numerically abundant cladocerans and copepods during the flood pulse. The magnitude of diel movement at each site was quantified with an index of vertical migration (VM)=log (nocturnal abundance+1)—log (diurnal abundance+1), and sites were grouped into lake (n=12), channel (n=9), and swamp (n=9) habitats based on principal components analysis of physicochemical characteristics. The cladocerans Diaphanosoma birgei and Moina micrura and the copepods Mesocyclops edax, Eurytemora affinis, and Acanthocyclops vernalis all exhibited siecantly greater VM …

Diet And Preparation For Spring Migration In Captive Hermit Thrushes (Catharus Guttatus), Jennifer A. Long, Philip C. Stouffer Jan 2003

Diet And Preparation For Spring Migration In Captive Hermit Thrushes (Catharus Guttatus), Jennifer A. Long, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

Seasonal changes in food choice by migratory birds often reflect changes in relative food abundance and increased energetic demand. Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) in southeastern Louisiana are highly frugivorous during winter but forage exclusively on arthropods just prior to spring migration. We hypothesized that this switch to an exclusively arthropod diet would lead to an increase in fat reserves compared to a frugivorous diet, and that fat birds would initiate migration sooner and display more migratory activity than lean birds. We tested these hypotheses on captive Hermit Thrushes maintained on either an arthropod only diet or a mixed fruit and …

A Regional Comparison Of Us Homeowner Perceptions About Treated Wood, Ben N. Donkor, Sanna Kallioranta, Richard P. Vlosky, Todd F. Shupe

Faculty Publications

This study examines United States homeowner perceptions about treated wood products. Regional differences were measured across a number of themes including overall perceptions about treated wood, treated wood relative to alternative building materials, and safety issues. Respondents in the South had the most positive perception of treated wood. The most significant health concerns were related to arsenic and chromium in preservative treatments with no differences across regions. Overall, there is not a strong aversion to using treated wood products per se although the perception of health risks exists.

Developing A User-Process Model For Designing Menu-Based Interfaces: An Exploratory Study, Boryung Ju, Myke Gluck

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to organize menu items based on a user-process model and implement a new version of current software for enhancing usability of interfaces. Dervin & Nilan's time-line method is used to develop a user-process model for user interface design. We developed a user process model drawn from actual users' understanding of their goals and strategies to solve their information needs by using Dervin's Sense-Making Theory with sense-making interviews. Six experienced subjects were recruited for the sense-making interviews. Each subject went through a learning/exploration session, and was asked to recall and describe specific information needs throughout …

Effect Of Nacl On Growth, Morphology, And Camptothecin Accumulation In Camptotheca Acuminata Seedlings, Zhanhai Li, Zhijun Liu Jan 2003

Effect Of Nacl On Growth, Morphology, And Camptothecin Accumulation In Camptotheca Acuminata Seedlings, Zhanhai Li, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

NaCl salt is shown to increase alkaloid accumulation in some plant species, but creates an extensive problem in plant cultivation. The effect of NaCl on Camptotheca acuminata Decaisne growth, morphology, and camptothecin accumulation (concentration and yield) was studied in a hydroponic culture system. High NaCl levels (above 75 mM) in growth media significantly reduced plant height, weight, leaf number, and leaf length but increased leaf weight. In contrast, low NaCl levels (below 75 mM) only moderately reduced growth and affected morphology. Our results suggest a concentration of 75 mM is the threshold for NaCl to exert a detrimental effect on …

Downstream Hydraulic Geometry Relations: 2. Calibration And Testing, Vijay P. Singh, Chih Ted Yang, Zhi Qiang Deng Jan 2003

Downstream Hydraulic Geometry Relations: 2. Calibration And Testing, Vijay P. Singh, Chih Ted Yang, Zhi Qiang Deng

Faculty Publications

Using 456 data sets under bank-full conditions obtained from various sources, the geometric relations, derived in part 1 [Singh et al., 2003], are calibrated and verified using the split sampling approach. The calibration of parameters shows that the change in stream power is not shared equally among hydraulic variables and that the unevenness depends on the boundary conditions to be satisfied by the channel under consideration. The agreement between the observed values of the hydraulic variables and those predicted by the derived relations is close for the verification data set and lends credence to the hypotheses employed in this study.

Influence Of Abiotic Factors On Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mound Population Ratings In Louisiana, A. M. Pranschke, L. M. Hooper-Bùi Jan 2003

Influence Of Abiotic Factors On Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mound Population Ratings In Louisiana, A. M. Pranschke, L. M. Hooper-Bùi

Faculty Publications

Colony size and reproductive status of Solenopsis invicta (Buren), red imported fire ants, is measured by a rating system developed by Harlan et al. (1981). Because this rating system is commonly used to evaluate chemical controls, especially insect growth regulators, and biological controls such as Thelohania spp., we evaluated the environmental conditions that would affect mound ratings in Louisiana. Increases in relative humidity and mound height were associated with population rating increases. Brood presence in the above ground portion of the nest (mound) was strongly associated with mound temperature. Brood was only found in mounds that had soil temperatures between …

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman Jan 2003

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman

Faculty Publications

Virtually everyone seems to agree that spam causes tremendous harm, but there is surprisingly little consensus on exactly what those harms are. This Essay examines various harms that spam purportedly causes to assess if the harm is real and if spam is treated dichotomously compared to other media communications. Based on this analysis, the Essay concludes that many harms purportedly caused by spam are not appropriate policy justifications for regulation.

"Race To The Bottom" Returns: China's Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond Jan 2003

"Race To The Bottom" Returns: China's Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond

Faculty Publications

This article will consider four areas of concern. First, the structural changes underway in the Chinese economy are creating both domestic and international imbalances that exacerbate inequalities among Chinese workers and create new inequities in the global labor market. Second, the Chinese regime's approach to labor rights remains rigidly authoritarian and, as a result, it is triggering ever more dramatic confrontations between workers and the Chinese state, despite the regime's nominal commitment to "socialism." Third, these developments are being reinforced by a pathological evolution in the principles that govern key international institutions such as the WTO and the ILO. A …

Faculty Publications

The Sixth Annual LatCrit Conference (LatCrit VI) titled "Latinas/os and the Americas: Centering North-South Frameworks in LatCrit Theory," was the latest installment of the leading progressive scholarly movement addressing nonwhite critical jurisprudence.3 The goals of the conference were to explore the ties that bind Latinas/os residing in the United States to their homeland's societies and cultures, and to examine the impact of globalization on critical jurisprudential discourse.4 The conference was attended predominately by straight and gay law professors of color, including Latinas/os, African Americans, Asian Americans, and indigenous persons, most of whom describe themselves as LatCrits or more whimsically, LatCritters. …

Reliability And The Admissibility Of Experts, Dale A. Nance Jan 2003

Reliability And The Admissibility Of Experts, Dale A. Nance

Faculty Publications

Modern law on expert testimony insists, as a condition of admissibility, that the asserted expertise be determined by the trial judge to be reliable. Reliability is usually characterized as a dichotomous attribute of evidence, as if expertise were either reliable or unreliable. This article argues that making progress in the development of meaningful and appropriate restrictions on the admissibility of expert testimony requires that we abandon this conceptualization and understand the implications of endorsing a gradational notion of reliability in which evidence can be more or less reliable and in which a comparative assessment of reliability is prominent. Consistent with …

Corrective Justice And Title I Of The Ada, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2003

Corrective Justice And Title I Of The Ada, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

Several recent studies have shown that employment discrimination plaintiffs filing lawsuits in federal court under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) win only approximately five percent of their cases. This Article argues that this phenomenon is attributable at least in part to the ADA's very flawed definition of the term "disability." It suggests that the current definition be abandoned and that a new approach be adopted, one that would reshape the ADA's protected class so that it more closely resembles a discrete and insular minority, such as those traditionally protected by the civil rights laws. While Title …

Small-Scale Spatial And Temporal Variability In Growth And Mortality Of Fish Larvae In The Subtropical Northcentral Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Assessing Recruitment Success, Bruce H. Comyns, Richard F. Shaw, Joanna Lyczkowski-Shultz Jan 2003

Small-Scale Spatial And Temporal Variability In Growth And Mortality Of Fish Larvae In The Subtropical Northcentral Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Assessing Recruitment Success, Bruce H. Comyns, Richard F. Shaw, Joanna Lyczkowski-Shultz

Faculty Publications

Extensive plankton collections were taken during seven September cruises (1990-93) along the inner continental shelf of the northcentral Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Despite the high productivity and availability of food during these cruises, significant smallscale spatial variability was found in larval growth rates for both Atlantic bumper (Chloroscombrus chrysurus, Carangidae) and vermilion snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens, Lutjanidae). The observed variability in larval growth rates was not correlated with changes in water temperature or associated with conspicuous hydrographic features and suggested the existence of less-recognizable regions where conditions for growth vary. Cruise estimates of mortality coefficients (Z) for larval Atlantic bumper (n=32,241 …
