Responding To The Demise Of Adolescent Artmaking: Charting The Course Of Adolescent Development In An Exceptional Art Classroom, Mark Graham Jan 2003

Responding To The Demise Of Adolescent Artmaking: Charting The Course Of Adolescent Development In An Exceptional Art Classroom, Mark Graham

Faculty Publications

Adolescent artistic developmental potential is often underestimated, ignored, or dismissed as irrelevant. This article argues that the deliberate cultivation of artistry is neglected and the task of developing mastery in any visual language is rarely attempted. By adolescence, most children give up the visual arts as a means of understanding or expression. Although drawing is accepted as a fundamental skill in most secondary art programs, there are different opinions on how to teach drawing, and to whom drawing should be taught. Endpoints of development and the role of cultural influences are two areas that invite different points of view. This …

Matrix Heterogeneity And Host-Parasitoid Interactions In Space, James T. Cronin Jan 2003

Matrix Heterogeneity And Host-Parasitoid Interactions In Space, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

In this study, I experimentally examined how the landscape matrix influenced the movement, oviposition behavior, and spatial distribution of Anagrus columbi, a common egg parasitoid of the planthopper Prokelisia crocea. Both species exist among discrete patches of prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), the sole host plant of P. crocea. Based on out-planted cordgrass pots bearing host eggs (to assess parasitism) or sticky leaves (traps for adult A. columbi), I found that the distribution of adult female A. columbi and pattern of ovipositions within a cordgrass patch were strongly matrix dependent. Female densities were 59% lower on the edge than interior of …

Matrix Composition Affects The Spatial Ecology Of A Prairie Planthopper, Kyle J. Haynes, James T. Cronin Jan 2003

Matrix Composition Affects The Spatial Ecology Of A Prairie Planthopper, Kyle J. Haynes, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

To date, there is a lack of well-controlled field experiments that disentangle the effects of the intervening matrix from other landscape variables (e.g., patch geography or quality) that might influence animal dispersal among patches. We performed a field experiment to investigate how the movement of a delphacid planthopper (Prokelisia crocea) among discrete patches of prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata) is affected by the composition of the matrix (mudflat, native nonhost grasses, and the introduced grass smooth brome [Bromus inermis]). Within each matrix type, marked planthoppers were released onto experimental cordgrass patches that were made identical in size, isolation, and host plant …

Children's Sociable And Aggressive Behaviour With Peers: A Comparison Of The Us And Australia, And Contributions Of Temperament And Parenting Styles, Alan Russell, Craig H. Hart, Clyde C. Robinson, Susanne F. Olsen Jan 2003

Children's Sociable And Aggressive Behaviour With Peers: A Comparison Of The Us And Australia, And Contributions Of Temperament And Parenting Styles, Alan Russell, Craig H. Hart, Clyde C. Robinson, Susanne F. Olsen

Faculty Publications

Links between both temperament and parenting, and children's sociable and aggressive behaviour with peers (physical and relational), were examined. The research was undertaken in two Western cultures (the United States and Australia) assumed to be similar in socialisation practices and emphases. The moderating effects of parent sex and child sex were also examined. Parents completed questionnaires on parenting styles and child temperament. Preschool teachers rated children's aggressive and sociable behaviour. US children were rated higher on both types of aggression by teachers and on sociability, activity, and emotionality by parents. Girls were rated as more relationally aggressive and more prosocial …

Two Rna Binding Proteins, Hen4 And Hua1 Act In The Processing Of Agamous Pre-Mrna In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Yulan Cheng, Naohiro Kato, Wenming Wang, Junjie Li, Xuemei Chen

Faculty Publications

AGAMOUS, a key player in floral morphogenesis, specifies reproductive organ identities and regulates the timely termination of stem cell fates in the floral meristem. Here, we report that strains carrying mutations in three genes, HUA1, HUA2, and HUA ENHANCER4 (HEN4), exhibit floral defects similar to those in agamous mutants: reproductive-to-perianth organ transformation and loss of floral determinacy. HEN4 codes for a K homology (KH) domain-containing, putative RNA binding protein that interacts with HUA1, a CCCH zinc finger RNA binding protein in the nucleus. We show that HUA1 binds AGAMOUS pre-mRNA in vitro and that HEN4, HUA1, and HUA2 act in …

Influence Of The El Niño Southern Oscillation On Fire Regimes In The Florida Everglades, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt, Matthew G. Slocum, Bob Panko

Faculty Publications

Disturbances that are strongly linked to global climatic cycles may occur in a regular, predictable manner that affects composition and distribution of ecological communities. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences worldwide precipitation patterns and has occurred with regular periodicity over the last 130 000 years. We hypothesized that ENSO, through effects on local weather conditions, has influenced frequency and extent of fires within Everglades National Park (Florida, USA). Using data from 1948 to 1999, we found that the La Nina phase of ENSO was associated with decreased dry-season rainfall, lowered surface water levels, increased lightning strikes, more fires, and …

Use Of Common Weeds Of Rice As Hosts For The Rice Water Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), K. V. Tindall, M. J. Stout

Faculty Publications

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most important insect pest in rice, Oryza sativa L., in the United States, Prior research indicates that rice water weevils feed primarily on monocotyledonous plants. Many monocot weeds occur in rice fields, but little is known about rice water weevil-weed interactions in rice. Host utilization of the rice water weevil was evaluated on rice, cultivar 'Cocodrie', and seven weeds commonly found in rice fields in preference and life cycle compatibility tests in the greenhouse. Barnyardgrass, Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv., yellow nutsedge, Cyperus esculentus L., broadleaf signalgrass, Brachiaria platyphylla Nash., and fall panicum, …

Plasma Membrane Topology Of Syncytial Domains Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk): The Ul20 Protein Enables Cell Surface Localization Of Gk But Not Gk-Mediated Cell-To-Cell Fusion, Timothy P. Foster, Xavier Alvarez, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Jan 2003

Plasma Membrane Topology Of Syncytial Domains Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk): The Ul20 Protein Enables Cell Surface Localization Of Gk But Not Gk-Mediated Cell-To-Cell Fusion, Timothy P. Foster, Xavier Alvarez, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Most spontaneously occurring mutations that cause extensive herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-induced cell fusion are single amino acid changes within glycoprotein K (gK). Despite the strong genetic association of gK with virus-induced cell fusion, its direct involvement in cellular membrane fusion has been controversial, largely due to previously unsuccessful efforts to detect gK expression on virion and cellular surfaces. Recently, we showed that gK is expressed on HSV-1 virions and functioned in virus entry (T. P. Foster, G. V. Rybachuk, and K. G. Kousoulas, J. Virol. 75:12431-12438, 2001). To determine whether gK is expressed on cellular surfaces, as well …

Faculty Publications

Clinical, serological, and pathological abnormalities observed in Holstein cows naturally infected with bovine lentivirus 1 bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) and other infections were progressive and most commonly associated with weight loss, lymphoid system deficiency, and behavioral changes. Clinical evidence of meningoencephalitis was dullness, stupor, and occasional head or nose pressing postures. The polymerase chain reactions associated the BIV provirus with the lesions in the central nervous system and lymphoid tissues. Multiple concurrent infections developed in retrovirally infected cows undergoing normal stresses associated with parturition and lactation. A major functional correlate of the lymphoreticular alterations was the development of multiple secondary …

Allelic Heterogeneity In Line-1 Retrotransposition Activity, Sheila M. Lutz, Bethaney J. Vincent, Haig H. Kazazian, Mark A. Batzer, John V. Moran

Faculty Publications

De novo LINE-1 (long interspersed element-1, or L1) retrotransposition events are responsible for ∼1/1,000 disease-causing mutations in humans. Previously, L1.2 was identified as the likely progenitor of a mutagenic insertion in the factor VIII gene in a patient with hemophilia A. It subsequently was shown to be one of a small number of active L1s in the human genome. Here, we demonstrate that L1.2 is present at an intermediate insertion allele frequency in worldwide human populations and that common alleles (L1.2A and L1.2B) exhibit an ∼16-fold difference in their ability to retrotranspose in cultured human HeLa cells. Chimera analysis revealed …

Although Africa has played a central role in human evolutionary history, certain studies have suggested that not all contemporary human genetic diversity is of recent African origin. We investigated 35 simple polymorphic sites and one Tn microsatellite in an 8-kb segment of the dystrophin gene. We found 86 haplotypes in 1,343 chromosomes from around the world. Although a classical out-of-Africa topology was observed in trees based on the variant frequencies, the tree of haplotype sequences reveals three lineages accounting for present-day diversity. The proportion of new recombinants and the diversity of the Tn microsatellite were used to estimate the age …

Effect Of Horn Fly (Haematobia Irritans) Control On Growth And Reproduction Of Beef Heifers, S. M. Derouen, L. D. Foil, A. J. Mackay, D. E. Franke, D. W. Sanson, W. E. Wyatt Jan 2003

Effect Of Horn Fly (Haematobia Irritans) Control On Growth And Reproduction Of Beef Heifers, S. M. Derouen, L. D. Foil, A. J. Mackay, D. E. Franke, D. W. Sanson, W. E. Wyatt

Faculty Publications

The influence of horn fly control with commercially available ear tags was studied on beef replacement heifers (n = 670) for growth and reproductive performance. The study was conducted at five sites in Louisiana over 3 yr. Heifers used were yearling replacement females that were exposed to fertile bulls during a limited spring breeding season that coincided with the horn fly season. In mid to late May of each year, heifers were randomly assigned to one of two horn fly treatments: untreated and treated for horn fly control. The trial continued each year until September or October at the end …

The Sound Of Dust Settling: A Response To Residual Criticisms Of The Uma, Richard C. Reuben Jan 2003

The Sound Of Dust Settling: A Response To Residual Criticisms Of The Uma, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

The Uniform Mediation Act has gone to the states for consideration after about five years of research, drafting, and vetting, and ultimately, overwhelming support by the American Bar Association, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, most major dispute resolution professional organizations and service providers, and many if not most leading dispute scholars. Despite this support, concerns about the UMA still continue to echo from its drafting. Professor Brian Shannon's criticisms largely echo these discussions, and in this article I seek to respond to some of them - after first extending my greatest appreciation to Professor Shannon for …

Supreme Court's 2002 Term Employment Law Cases: Is This Justice Scalia's Court?, Rafael Gely

Faculty Publications

In a recent article,' Erwin Chemerinsky argues that the Supreme Court's constitutional law decisions of the 2002 Term "cannot be explained by any overarching theory or underlying set of interpretative principles." Instead, he argues, "constitutional law is all about value choices made by the Justices." Professor Chemerinsky also argues that given the current composition of the Court, "it is the value choices of the middle" - Justice O'Connor and Justice Kennedy - that matter the most. Professor Chemerinsky ends his article with the assertion that "[f]or better or worse, this really is the O'Connor Court." In reviewing the cases decided …

Discussing The First Amendment , Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

Despite its many good qualities, Eternally Vigilant nevertheless suffers from a flaw common to First Amendment scholarship--a tendency to give short shrift to study of the social, psychological, historical, and political factors that influence the Court's decision making and, thus, free speech doctrine. Discussion including these influences would facilitate an even greater understanding of free speech doctrine and the principles that underlie it.

Is Civil Authority Business Interruption Coverage A Soft Risk In The Post-9/11 World, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jan 2003

Is Civil Authority Business Interruption Coverage A Soft Risk In The Post-9/11 World, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

Tthe question whether 9/11 has changed the insurance world cannot be answered simply In some respects, nothing is different, but it is difficult to be sanguine about this assessment. Terrorism is less predictable in terms of magnitude and frequency of loss, and this raises doubts about the capacity of the industry with respect to future events. Until the uncertainty with respect to the terrorism risk abates and markets stabilize, problems of cost and availability will persist. This, of course, has been true in other insurance sectors in the past, and temporary dislocations do not necessarily justify government intervention. If, however, …

Concealing And Confounding Adverse Signals: Insider Wealth-Maximizing Behavior In The Ipo Process, James S. Ang, James C. Brau

Faculty Publications

We study a known negative signal, the sale of insider shares in an IPO and find that insiders adopt two concealment strategies consistent with wealth-maximizing behavior. First, insiders underreport the number of personally owned shares in the prominent original prospectus and use an obscure amendment to communicate the true higher level of shares to be offered. Second, when insiders increase shares in a later amendment, they tend to either increase secondary shares disproportional to primary share increases, or to reduce primary shares to wholly or partly conceal the increase in secondary shares offered. Insiders confound the negative secondary share signal …

An Empirical Model Of Price And Quality Effects Of E-Commerce, Scott E. Sampson, Kendall Hulet Jan 2003

An Empirical Model Of Price And Quality Effects Of E-Commerce, Scott E. Sampson, Kendall Hulet

Faculty Publications

During the e-Commerce boom of the late 1990s it was predicted that the Internet would have a significant impact on prices of various goods and services. Whether the net impact would he positive or negative was harder to forecast, there being opposing effects. We develop a model that describes some of those effects, including information asymmetry, search costs, price dispersion, trust premiums, and convenience premiums. The model is discussed, and a major portion is statistically tested with empirical data. As an exploratory gesture, the model is extended to consider product quality effects of online shopping. The final section concludes with …

As part of the HST/STIS GRB host survey program we present the detection of three faint gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies based on an accurate localisation using ground-based data of the optical afterglows (OAs). A common property of these three hosts is their extreme faintness. The location at which GRBs occur with respect to their host galaxies and surrounding environments are robust indicators of the nature of GRB progenitors. The bursts studied here are among the four most extreme outliers, in terms of relative distance from the host center, in the recent comprehensive study of Bloom et al. (2002). We …

Theory Of Anomalous Magnetic Interference Pattern In Mesoscopic Superconducting/Normal/Superconducting Josephson Junctions, Daniel E. Sheehy, Alexandre M. Zagoskin

Faculty Publications

The magnetic interference pattern in mesoscopic superconducting/normal/superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions is sensitive to the scattering in the normal part of the system. In this paper we investigate it, generalizing Ishii’s formula for current-phase dependence to the case of normal scattering at NS boundaries in an SNS junction of finite width. The resulting flattening of the first diffraction peak is consistent with experimental data for S-two-dimensional-electron-gas-S mesoscopic junctions. © 2003 The American Physical Society.
