On Extraction From Nps, William D. Davies, Stanley William Dubinsky Feb 2003

On Extraction From Nps, William D. Davies, Stanley William Dubinsky

Faculty Publications

This paper sheds new light on the conditions governing extraction from NPs. A close examination of wh-extraction out of object NPs reveals that previously unnoticed semantic factors play a greater role than has been recognized. In particular, we find that NPs lacking 'participant' structure do not permit wh-extraction at all, and that certain NPs permit extraction even when they are definite. At the same time, the prohibition on wh-extraction from subject NPs is shown to be a purely syntactic phenomenon which arises from the particular way in which the Extended Projection Principle is satisfied in English.

Efficient Incorporation Of Coa, Nad And Fad Into Rna By In Vitro Transcription, Faqing Huang Feb 2003

Efficient Incorporation Of Coa, Nad And Fad Into Rna By In Vitro Transcription, Faqing Huang

Faculty Publications

Protein enzymes frequently recruit small molecule coenzymes to perform a variety of biochemical reactions. While the catalytic activities of RNA have been expanding rapidly, a similar strategy for RNA to utilize coenzymes and to increase its functional capabilities has yet to be demonstrated. A general in vitro transcription procedure has been developed to efficiently prepare RNA with coenzymes CoA, NAD and FAD covalently attached to the 5' end. These adenosine-containing coenzymes initiate transcription under the T7 class II promoter by T7 RNA polymerase. In addition to the three coenzymes, other adenosine-containing molecules may be incorporated into the first nucleotide position …

We report on the power and microwave noise performance of AlGan/GaN high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) at frequencies f > 18 GHz (K- and Ka-bands). At 20 GHz, a record continuous-wave output power of 1.6 W has been achieved on an eight-finger 500-mum total gate-periphery device. At 29 GHz, a 120-mum gate-periphery device showed a pulsed output density of 1.6 W/mm with an associated gain of 6.7 dB and power-added efficiency of 26%. Minimum noise figure of 1.5 dB has been achieved on a 0.2 mum x 200 mum device at 26 GHz. The data demonstrate the viability of AlGan/GaN HEMTs for …

Utilization Of Algal And Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Secretions (Eps) By The Deposit-Feeding Brittlestar Amphipholis Gracillima (Echinodermata), D. L. Hoskins, S. E. Stancyk, Alan W. Decho Feb 2003

Utilization Of Algal And Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Secretions (Eps) By The Deposit-Feeding Brittlestar Amphipholis Gracillima (Echinodermata), D. L. Hoskins, S. E. Stancyk, Alan W. Decho

Faculty Publications

Like many deposit-feeding organisms, the burrowing brittlestar Amphipholis gracillima feeds on particulate organic matter in surface sediments. Microbial exopolymeric secretions (EPS) are carbohydrate-enriched polymers produced by microalgae and bacteria that bind aggregates and form dense biofilms near the sediment-water interface. EPS are assimilable by some benthic infauna and may be utilized as a significant carbon source. EPS are absorbed by some deposit-feeders, including a holothurian, and may be supplemental sources of nutrition. The burrowing brittlestar A. gracillima is a deposit-feeder that was used in a mass balance approach to model the incorporation of radiolabeled EPS by bottom feeders. Brittlestars were …

A Tractable Approach To The Firm Location Decision Problem, Octávio Figueiredo, Paulo Guimaraes, Douglas P. Woodward Feb 2003

A Tractable Approach To The Firm Location Decision Problem, Octávio Figueiredo, Paulo Guimaraes, Douglas P. Woodward

Faculty Publications

The conditional logit model based on random utility maximization has provided an adequate framework to model firm location decisions. However, in practice, the implementation of this methodology presents problems when one has to handle complex choice scenarios with a large number of spatial alternatives. We posit the Poisson regression as a tractable solution to these problems. We demonstrate that by taking advantage of an equivalence relation between the likelihood function of the conditional logit and the Poisson regression we can, under certain circumstances, easily estimate a conditional logit model regardless of the number of choices. This insight should be particularly …

Comprehensive Model Of Alkali-Salt Deposition In Recovery Boilers, Richard A. Wessel, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091

Faculty Publications

Algorithms for alkali-salt deposition have been implemented into a comprehensive model for recovery boilers. The model includes (a) mechanisms for particle formation and chemistry, (b) particle deposition and adhesion, and (c) deposit thermal properties. These algorithms are fully coupled with models for turbulent flow, black liquor combustion, and heat transfer in the boiler. Model predictions for particle deposition in the convection pass are presented for a Babcock & Wilcox recovery boiler. This work is part of an ongoing project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to demonstrate an improved ability to anticipate ash behavior with changes in fuel composition, …

Next-to-leading-order QCD analyses of the ZEUS data on deep inelastic scattering together with fixed-target data have been performed, from which the gluon and quark densities of the proton and the value of the strong coupling constant (Formula presented) were extracted. The study includes a full treatment of the experimental systematic uncertainties including point-to-point correlations. The resulting uncertainties in the parton density functions are presented. A combined fit for (Formula presented) and the gluon and quark densities yields a value for (Formula presented) in agreement with the world average. The parton density functions derived from ZEUS data alone indicate the importance …

Sediment Transport By Dry Ravel, Emmanuel Gabet Jan 2003

Sediment Transport By Dry Ravel, Emmanuel Gabet

Faculty Publications

Dry ravel is a general term that describes the rolling, bouncing, and sliding of individual particles down a slope and is a dominant hillslope sediment transport process in steep arid and semiarid landscapes. During fires, particles can be mobilized by the collapse of sediment wedges that have accumulated behind vegetation. On a daily basis, particles may be mobilized by bioturbation and by small landslides. Experiments on a dry ravel flume indicate that a basic expression of the momentum equation predicts the distance traveled by particles propelled down a rough surface. This equation is further elaborated to produce a nonlinear slope-dependent …

Every Three-Point Set Is Zero Dimensional, David L. Fearnley, J. W. Lamoreaux, David L. Fearnley Jan 2003

Every Three-Point Set Is Zero Dimensional, David L. Fearnley, J. W. Lamoreaux, David L. Fearnley

Faculty Publications

This paper answers a question of Jan J. Dijkstra by giving a proof that all three-point sets are zero dimensional. It is known that all two-point sets are zero dimensional, and it is known that for all n > 3, there are n-point sets which are not zero dimensional, so this paper answers the question for the last remaining case.

The Regulation And Activation Of Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor Signaling Proteins In Adipocytes, Sanjin Zvonic, Peter Cornelius, William C. Stewart, Randall L. Mynatt, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jan 2003

The Regulation And Activation Of Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor Signaling Proteins In Adipocytes, Sanjin Zvonic, Peter Cornelius, William C. Stewart, Randall L. Mynatt, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is primarily known for its roles as a lesion factor released by the ruptured glial cells that prevent neuronal degeneration. However, CNTF has also been shown to cause weight loss in a variety of rodent models of obesity/type II diabetes, whereas a modified form also causes weight loss in humans. CNTF administration can correct or improve hyperinsulinemia, hyperphagia, and hyperlipidemia associated with these models of obesity. In order to investigate the effects of CNTF on fat cells, we examined the expression of CNTF receptor complex proteins (LIFR, gp130, and CNTFRα) during adipocyte differentiation and the effects …

Faculty Publications

The fault restoration technique of De Chabalier and Avouac [1994] is applied to an ultra-highresolution bathymetry data set from the East Pacific Rise (EPR) at 18140S. Fault offsets are calculated and subtracted from the original seafloor bathymetry to examine the morphology of the unfaulted seafloor surface within an area encompassing the ridge axis 400 [1] 1600 m in dimension. The restored topography reveals a gently sloping seafloor 200 m wide, which slopes 5 inward toward the spreading axis. We attribute this inward sloping seafloor to subsidence within the axial trough due to subsurface magmatic deflation. The vertical deformation field extracted …

We present new constraints on the system parameters of the SW Sextantis star DW Ursae Majoris, based on ultraviolet (UV) eclipse observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. Our data were obtained during a low state of the system, in which the UV light was dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD) primary. The duration of the WD eclipse allows us to set a firm lower limit on the mass ratio, q = M2/M1 > 0.24; if q < 1.5 (as expected on theoretical grounds) the inclination must satisfy i > 71°. We have also been able to determine the duration of WD ingress and egress from our data. This allows us to constrain the …

Local And Global Properties Of Conformal Initial Data For Black-Hole Collisions, Nina Jansen, Peter Diener, Jakob Hensen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov Jan 2003

Local And Global Properties Of Conformal Initial Data For Black-Hole Collisions, Nina Jansen, Peter Diener, Jakob Hensen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov

Faculty Publications

We study the physical properties of conformally flat initial data for single and binary black-hole configurations obtained using imaging and puncture methods. We investigate how the total mass Mtot of a dataset with two black holes depends on the configuration of linear or angular momentum and separation of the holes. The asymptotic behaviour of Mtot with increasing separation allows us to make conclusions about a nonphysical extra gravitational field introduced in the solutions by the conformally flat approach. We also calculate the spatial distribution of scalar invariants of the Riemann tensor which determine the gravitational tidal forces. For single black-hole …

Formation And Character Of An Ancient 19-M Ice Cover And Underlying Trapped Brine In An "Ice-Sealed" East Antarctic Lake, Peter T. Doran, Christian H. Fritsen, Christopher P. Mckay, John C. Priscu, Edward E. Adams

Faculty Publications

Lake Vida, one of the largest lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, was previously believed to be shallow (<10 >m) and frozen to its bed year-round. New ice-core analysis and temperature data show that beneath 19 m of ice is a water column composed of a NaCl brine with a salinity seven times that of seawater that remains liquid below - 10°C. The ice cover thickens at both its base and surface, sealing concentrated brine beneath. The ice cover is stabilized by a negative feedback between ice growth and the freezing-point depression of the brine. The ice cover …

Faculty Publications

We present a study on the time evolution of the electroluminescence(EL)spectra of AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes(LEDs) under pulsed current pumping. The ELspectra peaks at 285 nm and 330 nm are found to result from recombination involving band-to-band and free carriers to deep acceptor level transitions. The 330 nm long-wavelength transitions to deep acceptor levels in the p-AlGaN layer as well as the nonradiative processes significantly influence the LED internal quantum efficiency.

Sediment Detachment By Rain Power, Emmanuel Gabet, Thomas Dunne Jan 2003

Sediment Detachment By Rain Power, Emmanuel Gabet, Thomas Dunne

Faculty Publications

In interrill areas, overland flow is often incapable of detaching soil particles so detachment is primarily by raindrop impact. We derive a mathematical expression, rain power (R, W m−2), relating the energy expenditure of raindrops impacting a soil surface to the rate of detachment of soil particles. Rain power incorporates rainfall, hillslope, and vegetation characteristics and is modulated by flow depths. Rainfall simulation experiments on natural hillslopes were performed to measure detachment rates and across-slope flow depth distributions in surface runoff. Our results indicate that flow depths follow a Poisson distribution, and this observation is used to develop a dimensionless …

Tissue-Specific Structure/Function Differentiation Of The Liver Isoform Of 6-Phosphofructo-2-Kinase/Fructose-2,6-Bisphosphatase, Yong Hwan Lee, Yang Li, Kosaku Uyeda, Charles A. Hasemann Jan 2003

Tissue-Specific Structure/Function Differentiation Of The Liver Isoform Of 6-Phosphofructo-2-Kinase/Fructose-2,6-Bisphosphatase, Yong Hwan Lee, Yang Li, Kosaku Uyeda, Charles A. Hasemann

Faculty Publications

The crystal structures of the human liver 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase in three different liganding states were determined and compared with those of the rat testis isozyme. A set of amino acid sequence heterogeneity from the two distinct genes encoding the two different tissue isozymes leads to both global and local conformational differences that may cause the differences in catalytic properties of the two isozymes. The sequence differences in a β-hairpin loop in the kinase domain causes a translational shift of several hydrophobic interactions in the dimeric contact region, and its propagation to the domains interface results in a 5° twist of the …

Faculty Publications

Pseudo-SU(3) shell-model results are reported for M1 excitation strengths in 157Gd, 163Dy and 169Tm in the energy range between 2 and 4 MeV. Non-zero pseudo-spin couplings between the configurations play a very important role in determining the M1 strength distribution, especially its rapidly changing fragmentation pattern which differs significantly from what has been found in neighboring even-even systems. The results suggest one should examine contributions from intruder levels. ©2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Top Management Team Heterogeneity And Sme Export Performance: Investigating The Role Of Environmental Uncertainty, Franz T. Lohrke, Geralyn Mcclure Franklin, Vinay Kothari

Faculty Publications

Research has generally found that firms competing in high uncertainty environments gain advantages from having diverse (heterogeneous) management teams (TMTs). Employing a national survey of 70 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the present study examined whether TM T heterogeneity in functional background, international work experience, and foreign language proficiency had a stronger relationship with export performance for firms competing in high than those competing in low uncertainty environments. Results were generally weak when market and industry factors contributing to uncertainty were examined separately; however, additional analysis showed that the hypothesized relationship did exist when uncertainty was measured employing both factors …

Faculty Publications

The results of an executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program assessment are analyzed and interpreted against the backdrop of increasing competition between universities to attract and retain qualified students. The public education environment is currently in a turbulent state. This turbulence is in part caused by such factors as: reductions in public funding for higher education due to constrained state budgets, student expectations, requirements imposed by accrediting bodies, and other outside constituencies requesting more accountability. The pressure to hold education institutions accountable is increasing at a rapid rate. To provide a measure of accountability and quantify program quality, education …
