Spatiotemporal Changes In The Slavery-Inequality Relationship: The Diffusion Of The Legacy Of Slavery, Heather A. O'Connell, Katherine J. Curtis, Alex Mikulas, Jack Dewaard, Junho Lee

Faculty Publications

Despite the persistence of relationships between historical racist violence and contemporary Black-White inequality, research indicates, in broad strokes, that the slavery-inequality relationship in the United States has changed over time. Identifying the timing of such change across states can offer insights into the underlying processes that generate Black-White inequality. In this study, we use integrated nested Laplace approximation models to simultaneously account for spatial and temporal features of panel data for Southern counties during the period spanning 1900 to 2018, in combination with data on the concentration of enslaved people from the 1860 census. Results provide the first evidence on …

Dimensions Of Parenting And Children’S Conduct Problems: The Importance Of Considering Children’S Callous–Unemotional Traits, Carolina Facci, Andrea Baroncelli, Paul J. Frick, Enrica Ciucci

Faculty Publications

Research has clearly indicated that the development of serious behavioral problems in children and adolescents is influenced by parenting. However, recent research has refined the role of parenting by showing the importance of distinguishing between different types of parenting and in considering the role of callous–unemotional traits (CU traits) and conduct problems (CP) of the children. In the current study, we advance this research by distinguishing between emotional (e.g., parental warmth; parental hostility) and behavioral (e.g., use of positive reinforcement; inconsistent discipline/harsh discipline) aspects of parenting and by considering the way parents respond to children’s emotions (i.e., coaching and dismissing). …

Increasing Mowing Height And Nitrogen Fertility Does Not Enhance Unirrigated Centipedegrass Summer Drought Stress, Mike Adams, Jeffrey Beasley, Jeff Kuehny, Dylan Watson

Faculty Publications

Proper N fertilization and higher mowing heights are recommended to enhance rooting for greater turfgrass summer drought stress. To examine the effects of these primary cultural practices on centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.] drought response in the mid-Southern United States, a study was conducted to evaluate four mowing heights (1, 2, 3 and 4 inches) and N fertilization versus no fertilization. During the study, roots were periodically harvested at upper (0–3 inches) and lower (3–6 inches) soil depths, and roots were analyzed for architecture which included root length (RL) and surface area (SA), and root weight (RW). In July, plant-soil …

We report on the detection of X-ray polarisation in the black-hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 during its dim hard spectral state by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). This is the first detection of X-ray polarisation at the transition from the soft to the hard state in an X-ray binary. We find an averaged 2- 8 keV polarisation degree of (3.3 ± 0.4)% and a corresponding polarisation angle of 3 ±4, which matches the polarisation detected during the rising stage of the outburst, in September- October 2023, within 1σuncertainty. The observational campaign complements previous studies of this source and enables …

Supernova remnants (SNRs) provide insights into cosmic-ray acceleration and magnetic field dynamics at shock fronts. Recent X-ray polarimetric measurements by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have revealed radial magnetic fields near particle acceleration sites in young SNRs, including Cassiopeia A, Tycho, and SN 1006. We present here the spatially resolved IXPE X-ray polarimetric observation of the northwestern rim of SNR RX J1713.7–3946. For the first time, our analysis shows that the magnetic field in the particle acceleration sites of this SNR is oriented tangentially with respect to the shock front. Because of the lack of precise Faraday rotation measurements …

We report the discovery of X-ray polarization from the X-ray-bright filament G0.13-0.11 in the Galactic center (GC) region. This filament features a bright, hard X-ray source that is most plausibly a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and an extended and structured diffuse component. Combining the polarization signal from IXPE with the imaging/spectroscopic data from Chandra, we find that X-ray emission of G0.13-0.11 is highly polarized PD = 57(±18)% in the 3-6 keV band, while the polarization angle is PA = 21° ± 9). This high degree of polarization proves the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission from G0.13-0.11. In turn, the …

We report on an observational campaign on the bright black hole (BH) X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 centered around five observations by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. These observations track for the first time the evolution of the X-ray polarization of a BH X-ray binary across a hard to soft state transition. The 2-8 keV polarization degree decreased from ∼4% to ∼3% across the five observations, but the polarization angle remained oriented in the north-south direction throughout. Based on observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we find that the intrinsic 7.25 GHz radio polarization aligns with the X-ray polarization. Assuming …

First-order phase transitions in the very early universe are a prediction of many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and could provide the departure from equilibrium needed for a dynamical explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. They could also produce gravitational waves of a frequency observable by future space-based detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. All calculations of the gravitational wave power spectrum rely on a relativistic version of the classical nucleation theory of Cahn-Hilliard and Langer, due to Coleman and Linde. The high purity and precise control of pressure and temperature achievable in …

Three-Dimensional Superconductivity Induced By An Extremely Small Amount Of Li In Lixsnse2, Daniel Duong, Jie Xing, Eklavya Thareja, Silu Huang, Scott Crittenden, William A. Shelton, Rongying Jin

Faculty Publications

Unconventional superconductivity occurs often in materials with low dimensionality. Here, we report superconductivity observed in layered LixSnSe2 with the superconducting transition temperature Tc∼6 K. Through Li+ intercalation in semiconducting SnSe2 via electrochemical process, LixSnSe2 is formed with an extremely small x value as estimated from the c-axis lattice parameter, carrier concentration, and first-principles calculations. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements allow the construction of both lower (Hc1ab) and upper critical field (Hc2abandHc2c) phase diagrams. While Hc2c obtained from 10% and 50% resistivity drops exhibits linear temperature dependence, Hc2c(90%resistivitydrop), Hc1ab, and Hc2ab can be described by the empirical formula Hci(T)=Hci(0)[1-(TTc0)2] (i=1, …

Conservation agriculture (CA) aims to sustain agricultural production, soil, and environmental health in agroecosystems and has been promoted throughout the United States. The adoption of CA in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) systems provides both agronomic and environmental benefits. Yet, there is limited information on the long-term effects of CA practices on crop yield and adaptation strategies. An integrated CA system, that is, cover crops with no-tillage (NT) instead of conventional agriculture, was implemented in the long-term field experiments and assessed with an integrated biogeochemical model. Using the denitrification–decomposition model, this study estimated the effects of four different cover crops, for example, …

Completing The Ba–As Compositional Space: Synthesis And Characterization Of Three New Binary Zintl Arsenides, Ba3as4, Ba5as4, And Ba16as11, Spencer R. Watts, Lindsey M. Wingate, Svilen Bobev, Sviatoslav Baranets

Faculty Publications

Three novel binary barium arsenides, Ba3As4, Ba5As4, and Ba16As11, were synthesized and their crystal and electronic structures were investigated. Structural data collected via the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method indicate that the anionic substructures of all three novel compounds are composed of structural motifs based on the homoatomic As–As contacts, with [As2]4− dimers found in Ba5As4 and Ba16As11, and an [As4]6− tetramer found in Ba3As4. Ba3As4 and Ba5As4 crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal system—with the non-centrosymmetric space group Fdd2 (a = 15.3680(20) Å, b = 18.7550(30) Å, c = 6.2816(10) Å) for the former, and the centrosymmetric space group …

Boulders are ubiquitous on rocky planets and provide valuable information about planetary processes. The abundance, size, and distribution of boulders offer insights into the primary processes that form them and the secondary processes that modify their position and size. However, the roles of varying environmental processes, including cryospheric processes, are poorly known. In this study, we analyze over 20 million boulders in the northern lowlands of Mars (50–70°N) to evaluate their distribution and identify environmental factors that might influence their clustering. We used spatial statistics to quantify the degree of boulder clustering across the northern plains. We found two latitudinal …

Seismic traveltime anomalies of waves that traverse the uppermost 100–200 km of the outer core have been interpreted as evidence of reduced seismic velocities(relative to radial reference models) just below the core–mantle boundary (CMB). These studies typically investigate differential traveltimes of SmKS waves, which propagate as P waves through the shallowest outer core and reflect from the underside of the CMB m times. The use of SmKS and S(m-1)KS differential traveltimes for core imaging are often assumed to suppress contributions from earthquake location errors and unknown and unmodelled seismic velocity heterogeneity in the mantle. The goal of this study is …

Machine Learning Assisted Design And Optimization Of Plate-Lattice Structures With Superior Specific Recovery Force, Amir Teimouri, Adithya Challapalli, John Konlan, Guoqiang Li

Faculty Publications

In load carrying structures and devices, there is a growing need for shape memory polymer (SMP) metamaterials that are lightweight and have superior strength, remarkable flexibility, and substantial specific recovery force (SFR). One of the challenges is to find optimum lightweight structures with high SFR. To address this challenge, we propose a novel inverse design framework to design plate-lattice structures (PLSs) with user-defined optimum specific maximum compression strength. Consisting of three sub-frameworks, the performance of the inverse design framework was validated before it was utilized to optimize PLSs. The optimum PLSs developed are fabricated with 3D printing using a novel …

Borehole-Based Interval Kriging For 3d Lithofacies Modeling, Yuqi Song, Frank T.C. Tsai

Faculty Publications

Developing a three-dimensional (3D) lithofacies model from boreholes is critical for providing a coherent understanding of complex subsurface geology, which is essential for groundwater studies. This study aims to introduce a new geostatistical method—interval kriging—to efficiently conduct 3D borehole-based lithological modeling with sand/non-sand binary indicators. Interval kriging is a best linear unbiased estimator for irregular interval supports. Interval kriging considers 3D anisotropies between two orthogonal components—a horizontal plane and a vertical axis. A new 3D interval semivariogram is developed. To cope with the nonconvexity of estimation variance, the minimization of estimation variance is regulated with an additional regularization term. The …

Subsidence in southeastern Louisiana is a significant geological issue caused by natural and human-induced factors like low-lying topography and groundwater pumping. Human activities also led to coastal land loss and reduced sediment supply. Satellite-based technologies such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) are used to monitor subsidence. Louisiana has about 130 continuously operating reference stations (CORS) monitoring subsidence statewide. GNSS provides accurate point measurements but limited spatial coverage. InSAR, however, detects ground deformation over large areas using satellite-based radar imagery. In response to this advantage, we employed Sentinel-1 SAR images from 2017 to 2021 …

The Gas and Downhole Water Sink–Assisted Gravity Drainage (GDWS-AGD) process addresses gas flooding limitations in reservoirs surrounded by infinite-acting aquifers, particularly water coning. The GDWS-AGD technique reduces water cut in oil production wells, improves gas injectivity, and optimizes oil recovery, especially in reservoirs with high water coning. The GDWS-AGD process installs two 7-inch production casings bilaterally. Then, two 2-3/8-inch horizontal tubings are completed. One tubing produces oil above the oil–water contact (OWC) area, while the other drains water below it. A hydraulic packer in the casing separates the two completions. The water sink completion uses a submersible pump to prevent …

The City of Leaf serious game is a five-party role-playing game designed to simulate a response to a drinking water contamination crisis. The game involves five roles: chemical manufacturer, local resident, water treatment plant, environmental agency, and health department, each with distinct knowledge, responsibilities, capabilities, and objectives. Participants assume one of these roles and exchange information, strategize responses, and work towards a solution that satisfies all parties involved throughout the game. This game aims to deepen participants' understanding of the complexities involved in managing a drinking water emergency, with a particular focus on emphasizing the critical role of inter-organizational communication …

High-energy neutral solar radiation in the form of γ-rays and neutrons is produced as secondary products in solar flares. The characteristics of this emission can provide key information regarding the energization of charged particles, particularly when primary particles remain trapped in the corona. The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) suite on Parker Solar Probe is composed of instruments primarily intended to measure energetic charged particles. However, the High Energy Telescope (HET) in ISOIS was also designed with a supplementary neutral mode intended to measure γ-rays and neutrons. HET observed its first clear solar γ-ray event in connection with …
