The movement of solutes in a watershed is a complex process with multiple interactions and feedbacks across spatial and temporal scales. Modeling the dynamics of solute transport along diverse hydrologic pathways within watersheds – from hillslopes to stream channels and in and out of the hyporheic zones – is challenging but critically important, as these processes integrate and contribute to the biogeochemical functioning of the river corridor up to the river network scale. Here we use results from a long-term network-scale tracer test at the H.J. Andrews experimental forest in western Cascade Mountains, Oregon, USA to inform a multiscale framework …

Weakly magnetized neutron stars in X-ray binaries show a complex phenomenology with several spectral components that can be associated with the accretion disk, the boundary, and/or a spreading layer, a corona, and a wind. Spectroscopic information alone, however, is not enough to distinguish these components. The analysis of the timing data revealed that most of the variability, and in particular, kilohertz quasi-period oscillations, are associated with the high-energy component that corresponds to the boundary and/or spreading layer. Additional information about the nature of the spectral components, and in particular, about the geometry of the emission region, can be provided by …

New Procedure For Evaluation Of U(3) Coupling And Recoupling Coefficients, Phong Dang, Jerry P. Draayer, Feng Pan, Kevin S. Becker
Faculty Publications
A simple method to calculate Wigner coupling coefficients and Racah recoupling coefficients for U(3) in two group–subgroup chains is presented. While the canonical U(3)⊃U(2)⊃U(1) coupling and recoupling coefficients are applicable to any system that respects U(3) symmetry, the U(3)⊃SO(3) coupling coefficients are more specific to nuclear structure studies. This new procedure precludes the use of binomial coefficients and alternating sums which were used in the 1973 formulation of Draayer and Akiyama, and in so doing provides a faster and more accurate determination of any and all required results. The resolution of the outer multiplicity is based on the null space …

Triaxial Rotor Modes In Finite- N Boson Systems, Yu Zhang, Sheng Nan Wang, Feng Pan, Chong Qi, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
We propose an algebraic approach to elucidate the dynamic characteristics of triaxial rotor modes in nuclei by mapping a triaxial rotor Hamiltonian to the interacting boson model one within a finite-N framework. Our method unveils striking features not observed in conventional modes, exemplified by the B(E2) anomaly, characterized by B(E2;41+→21+)/B(E2;21+→01+)< 1. Using specific examples, we demonstrate that the peculiar properties of low-lying states in both neutron-rich and neutron-deficient Os nuclei can be comprehensively understood through the proposed Hamiltonian, which incorporates both rigid and soft triaxial rotor modes. This algebraic method not only offers fresh insights into triaxial dynamics but also showcases its capability in uncovering emergent exotic collective modes in nuclear structure.

Background: Physical activity and metformin pharmacotherapy are associated with improved clinical outcomes in breast and colorectal cancer survivors. Myokines are cytokines secreted from skeletal muscle that may mediate these associations. Methods: This hypothesis-generating analysis used biospecimens collected from a multi-centre 2 × 2 factorial randomized design of 116 patients with stage I–III breast and colorectal cancer who were randomized to 12 weeks of (1) aerobic exercise (moderate intensity titrated to 220 min/week); (2) metformin (850 mg daily for 2 weeks and then titrated to 850 mg twice per day); (3) aerobic exercise and metformin; or (4) control. Fourteen myokines were …

Anderson Localization For The Unitary Almost Mathieu Operator, Fan Yang
Faculty Publications
We prove Anderson localization for all Diophantine frequencies and all non-resonant phases for a model that arises from a 2D quantum walk model subject to an external magnetic field, also known as the unitary almost Mathieu operator. Our work provides the first localization results for all Diophantine frequencies in quasi-periodic quantum walk and CMV matrix setting. We also obtain sharp asymptotics of the localized eigenfunctions.

This work (in two parts) will review the recently developed predictive modeling methodology called “4th-BERRU-PM” and its applicability to nuclear energy systems as exemplified by an illustrative application to the Polyethylene-Reflected Plutonium (acronym: PERP) OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark. The acronym 4th-BERRU-PM designates the “Fourth-Order Best-Estimate Results with Reduced Uncertainties Predictive Modeling” methodology, which uses the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) principle to incorporate fourth-order experimental and computational information, including fourth (and higher) order sensitivities of computed model responses to model parameters, while yielding best-estimate results with reduced uncertainties for the first fourth-order moments (mean values, covariance, skewness, and kurtosis) of the optimally …

Background/Objectives: Sickle cell disease (SCD) impacts about 100,000 people in the US. SCD increases the risk of cholelithiasis and microvascular ischemia, which could increase the risk of acute pancreatitis (AP). Abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom of AP and sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis. The purpose of our systematic review is to estimate the prevalence and determine the severity of AP in individuals with SCD compared to the general population. Methods: Multiple electronic databases were searched. We included studies that included children and adults (population) and addressed the association of SCD (exposure) with AP (outcome) compared to the same population …

The Risk Management Of Covid-19: Lessons From Financial Economics And Financial Risk Management, Don M. Chance

The United States had one of the worst outcomes in the management of COVID-19 risk, with a death rate in the 94th percentile of all countries. Setting aside the obvious politicized nature of COVID-19 public health recommendations and mandates, we argue that best practices in financial risk management provide parallels that could have served as valuable guidance. We demonstrate here that considerable signals were missed that would have required very little effort and would have been consistent with sound risk management. We also identify examples of misleading information such as that COVID-19 was particularly hard on the elderly. The data …

A Generalization Of The Graham-Pollak Tree Theorem To Even-Order Steiner Distance, Joshua N. Cooper, Gabrielle Tauscheck
A Generalization Of The Graham-Pollak Tree Theorem To Even-Order Steiner Distance, Joshua N. Cooper, Gabrielle Tauscheck
Faculty Publications
Graham and Pollak showed in 1971 that the determinant of a tree’s distance matrix depends only on its number of vertices, and, in particular, it is always nonzero. The Steiner distance of a collection of 𝑘 vertices in a graph is the fewest number of edges in any connected subgraph containing those vertices; for 𝑘 =2 , this reduces to the ordinary definition of graphical distance. Here we show that the hyperdeterminant of the 𝑘 th order Steiner distance hypermatrix is always nonzero if 𝑘 is even, extending their result beyond 𝑘 =2 . Previously, the authors showed that the …

Learning Nonlinear Dynamics In Synchronization Of Knowledge-Based Leader-Following Networks, Shimin Wang, Xiangyu Meng, Hongwei Zhang, Frank L. Lewis
Faculty Publications
Knowledge-based leader-following synchronization of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems is a challenging problem since the leader's dynamic information is unknown to any follower node. This paper proposes a learning-based fully distributed observer for a class of nonlinear leader systems, which can simultaneously learn the leader's dynamics and states. This class of leader dynamics is rather general and does not require a bounded Jacobian matrix. Based on this learning-based distributed observer, we further synthesize an adaptive distributed control law for solving the leader-following synchronization problem of multiple Euler–Lagrange systems subject to an uncertain nonlinear leader system. The results are illustrated by a …

Physics simulation results of natural processes usually do not fully capture the real world. This is caused for instance by limits in what physical processes are simulated and to what accuracy. In this work we propose and analyze the use of an LSTM-based deep learning network machine learning (ML) architecture for capturing and predicting the behavior of the systemic error for storm tide forecast models with respect to real-world water elevation observations from gauge stations during hurricane events. The overall goal of this work is to predict the systemic error of the physics model and use it to improve the …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant Grade VI cancer type with a median survival duration of only 8–16 months. Earlier detection of GBM could enable more effective treatment. Hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HPMRS) could detect GBM earlier than conventional anatomical MRI in glioblastoma murine models. We further investigated whether artificial intelligence (A.I.) could detect GBM earlier than HPMRS. We developed a deep learning model that combines multiple modalities of cancer data to predict tumor progression, assess treatment effects, and to reconstruct in vivo metabolomic information from ex vivo data. Our model can detect GBM progression two weeks earlier than conventional MRIs …

Antioxidant therapies are of interest in the prevention and management of ocular disorders such as cataracts. Although an active area of interest, topical therapy with antioxidants for the treatment of cataracts is complicated by multiple ocular anatomical barriers, product stability, and solubility. Entrapment and delivery of antioxidants with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles is a possible solution to these challenges, however, little is known regarding their effects in vitro or in vivo. Our first aim was to investigate the impact of blank and lutein loaded PLGA nanoparticles on viability and development of reactive oxygen species in lens epithelial cells in vitro. Photo-oxidative …

Little is known about the barriers and facilitators to organizational maintenance of faith-based health promotion programs. This study used qualitative data (collected from 2016–2019) from pastors (n = 81) and program coordinators (n = 103) to identify barriers and facilitators to 24-month maintenance of a faith-based physical activity (PA) and healthy eating (HE) intervention in South Carolina. Barriers differed for PA versus HE: resistance to change impeded HE while church characteristics tended to impede PA. Similar themes emerged for PA and HE facilitators: healthy opportunities, church communication, and consistency. Future research should build upon this study to tailor faith-based health …

Background and Aim: Previously observed associations between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and perinatal outcomes using a between-individual method may be confounded by unmeasured maternal factors. This study aims to examine the association between IPI and adverse perinatal outcomes using within-individual comparative analyses. Methods: We studied 10,647 individuals from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Consecutive Pregnancies Study in Utah with ≥3 liveborn singleton pregnancies. We matched two IPIs per individual and used conditional logistic regression to examine the association between IPI and adverse perinatal outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks’ gestation), small-for-gestational-age (SGA, < 10th percentile of sex-specific birthweight for gestational age), low birthweight (LBW, < 2,500 g), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Point and 95% confidence interval (CI) estimates were adjusted for factors that vary across pregnancies within individuals. Results: CIs did not unequivocally support either an increase or a decrease in the odds of PTB (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.31, 95% CI: 0.87, 1.96), SGA (aOR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.51, 1.28), LBW (aOR: 1.59, 95% CI: 0.90, 2.80), or NICU admission (aOR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.66, 1.40) for an IPI < 6 months compared to 18–23-months IPI (reference), and neither did the CIs for the aOR of IPIs of 6–11 and 12–18 months compared to the reference. In contrast, an IPI ≥24 months was associated with increased odds of LBW (aOR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.66 for 24–29 months; aOR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.21, 4.29 for 30–35 months; and aOR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.17, 3.72 for ≥36 months). Conclusions: Using a within-individual comparative method, we did not find evidence that a short IPI compared to the recommended IPI of 18–23 months was associated with increased odds of PTB, SGA, LBW, and NICU admission. IPI ≥ 24 months was associated with increased odds of delivering an LBW infant.

The thermal transport to drops that roll or slide down heated superhydrophobic surfaces is explored. High-speed infrared imaging is performed to provide time-resolved measurement of the heat transfer to the drop. Data are obtained for drops moving along smooth hydrophobic and structured superhydrophobic surfaces. Both post and rib style structures with surface solid fractions ranging from 0.06 to 1.0 are considered. The inclination angle of the surfaces was varied from 10 deg to 25 deg, and the drop volume was varied from 12 to 40 µL. The measurements reveal that the drop speed is a strong function of both the …

A plethora of coronal models, from empirical to more complex magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ones, are being used for reconstructing the coronal magnetic field topology and estimating the open magnetic flux. However, no individual solution fully agrees with coronal hole observations and in situ measurements of open flux at 1 au, as there is a strong deficit between the model and observations contributing to the known problem of the missing open flux. In this paper, we investigate the possible origin of the discrepancy between modeled and observed magnetic field topology by assessing the effect on the simulation output by the choice of …

An experimental kelp farming system for exposed ocean conditions was designed, deployed, planted with kelp and instrumented for evaluation of its dynamic response to ocean waves, tides, and currents. The farm featured a novel "lattice" mooring design and anchor lines and cultivation lines (horizontal lines used as kelp growth substrate) made of fiberglass rods. The farm was deployed at a site in Saco Bay, Maine with 13 m (MLLW) water depth. There the farm was exposed to waves with heights up to 5.9 m. Anchor line tension, tide and wave height time series were gathered and processed into response amplitude …

Pulse profile modeling of X-ray data from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer is now enabling precision inference of neutron star mass and radius. Combined with nuclear physics constraints from chiral effective field theory (χEFT), and masses and tidal deformabilities inferred from gravitational-wave detections of binary neutron star mergers, this has led to a steady improvement in our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS). Here, we consider the impact of several new results: the radius measurement for the 1.42 M ⊙ pulsar PSR J0437−4715 presented by Choudhury et al., updates to the masses and radii of PSR …

Energy dissipation in collisionless plasmas is one of the most outstanding open questions in plasma physics. Magnetic reconnection and turbulence are two phenomena that can produce the conditions for energy dissipation. These two phenomena are closely related to each other in a wide range of plasmas. Turbulent fluctuations can emerge in critical regions of reconnection events, and magnetic reconnection can occur as a product of the turbulent cascade. In this study, we perform 2D particle-in-cell simulations of a reconnecting Harris current sheet in the presence of turbulent fluctuations to explore the effect of turbulence on the reconnection process in collisionless …
