On Application Of A Surrogate Model To Numerical Evaluation Of Effective Elastic Properties Of Composites With 3d Rotationally Symmetric Particles, Pascal Alexander Happ, Igor Tsukrov, Romana Piat

Faculty Publications

Micromechanical modelling of particulate composites with non-ellipsoidal particle shapes presents significant challenges because analytical approaches based on the fundamental results of Eshelby cannot be used. On the other side, direct numerical evaluations by finite element analysis can involve high computational cost in the case when particle features have small radius of curvature, sharp edges and require extremely fine meshes. This paper proposes substituting the exact particle shape with a surrogate model producing approximately the same contribution to the effective elastic moduli. We illustrate our approach by considering rotationally symmetric 3D particle shapes with the external surface defined by the Laplace's …

Regulating Crypto Intermediaries, Eric D. Chason Oct 2024

Regulating Crypto Intermediaries, Eric D. Chason

Faculty Publications

Early 2024 produced a dramatic rebound in cryptocurrency markets as Bitcoin hit an all-time high price in March 2024. This surge was fueled in large part by judicial and regulatory action. After years of denials and a high-profile defeat in court, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) finally approved the first exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for Bitcoin in January 2024. Many believe that these approvals will lead to a greater shift of investment funds into crypto. Crypto regulation is not, however, ready for this shift. While ETFs have clear treatment under current law, other institutions lack the same clarity or …

Extraterritoriality's Empire: How Self-Determination Limits Extraterritorial Lawmaking, Evan J. Criddle Oct 2024

Extraterritoriality's Empire: How Self-Determination Limits Extraterritorial Lawmaking, Evan J. Criddle

Faculty Publications

In recent years, a growing number of countries have courted controversy by regulating activities outside their borders. They have used extraterritorial lawmaking to cultivate competitive global markets, strengthen or weaken data privacy, combat foreign terrorism and military aggression, promote human rights abroad, and suppress political dissent at home. This Article explores whether extraterritorial lawmaking can be reconciled with the right to self-determination under international law. I argue that the right to self-determination entitles each national polity to determine the laws and institutions by which it is governed within its territory. Extraterritorial lawmaking violates the right to self-determination when it subjects …

Real-Time Synthesis Of A Nonuniformly Correlated, Partially Coherent Beam Using An Optical Coordinate Tansformation, Milo W. Hyde Iv Oct 2024

Real-Time Synthesis Of A Nonuniformly Correlated, Partially Coherent Beam Using An Optical Coordinate Tansformation, Milo W. Hyde Iv

Faculty Publications

We design, build, and validate an optical system for generating light beams with complex spatial coherence properties in real time. Beams of this type self-focus and are resistant to turbulence degradation, making them potentially useful in applications such as optical communications. We begin with a general theoretical analysis of our proposed design. Our approach starts by generating a Schell-model (uniformly correlated or shift-invariant) source by spatially filtering incoherent light. We then pass this light through an optical coordinate transformer, which converts the Schell-model source into a nonuniformly correlated field. After the general analysis, we discuss system engineering, including trade-offs among …

Conducting Structure-From-Motion (Sfm) Modeling Of Freshwater Environments Using Unpiloted Aerial Systems (Uas): Challenges And Lessons Learned, Benjamin T. Fraser, Christine L. Bunyon, Russell G. Congalton

Faculty Publications

The pairing of Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) has provided new capabilities for modeling freshwater environments. Applications of UAS-SfM range from water quality monitoring to the mapping of aquatic vegetation. The models produced provide users with the ability to analyze features at ultra-high-resolutions and across scales not easily achieved through in situ sampling. Despite the demonstrated benefits of UAS-SfM in freshwater and other natural resource disciplines, there remain fundamental technical challenges in the modeling of environments with homogenous surfaces (e.g., water). In this research, the effectiveness of several image collection and processing approaches for the modelling …

Smith, Anastasia V. Marchuk, Matthew R. Argall, Colin J. Joyce, Philip A. Isenberg, Bernard J. Vasquez, Nathan A. Schwadron, Neil Murphy

Faculty Publications

We examine Ulysses magnetic field observations from 1993 to 1996 as the spacecraft made its first fast-latitude scan from the southern to the northern hemisphere. Most of the observations we use are representative of high-latitude solar minimum conditions. We examine magnetic field power spectra characteristics of interplanetary turbulence at high frequencies, where the spectrum breaks from an inertial range into the ion dissipation range. The onset and spectral index of the dissipation spectrum are consistent with low-latitude observations at 1 au. Both ranges have a ratio of power in perpendicular magnetic field components to parallel components near 3. The power …

Production Box Cost Estimating Relationships For Dod Avionics, Carla J. Cisneros, Edward D. White, Brandon M. Lucas, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Robert D. Fass, Shawn M. Valentine Oct 2024

Production Box Cost Estimating Relationships For Dod Avionics, Carla J. Cisneros, Edward D. White, Brandon M. Lucas, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Robert D. Fass, Shawn M. Valentine

Faculty Publications

The authors use historical information obtained from the Cost Assessment Data Enterprise to estimate recurring production unit cost for DoD avionics via cost estimating relationships (CERs). The specific modeled responses include mean unit cost, median unit cost, and the 100th production unit cost (T100) utilizing learning curve theory. For T100, the authors adopt both a multiplicative and an additive error for CER comparison. Recommended CERs consist of the mean unit cost and the T100 utilizing a multiplicative error. Moreover, results reveal that weight has a significant effect on cost as well as a potential underaccounting of real price change or …

Dynamic Localization Of Endoplasmic Reticulum During Tetrahymena Conjugation, Guerrier Sabrice, Michael Patterson, Kaitlin Crofton, Michael Tucker, Shyhiem Walker

Faculty Publications

Changes in lipid composition at membrane fusion sites in mating Tetrahymena are thought to involve the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but its localization to these sites has not been observed. Here we show ER distribution during Tetrahymena mating using TtRET1-GFP and GFP-KDEL. We find that both markers localize to perinuclear membranes and tubular structures that connect perinuclear membrane to plasma membrane at fusion sites. Interestingly, both markers disappear from parental macronuclei after emergence of zygotic macronuclei. These similarities in localization of established ER marker, GFP-KDEL, and TtRET1-GFP reveal TtRET1-GFP as a useful new live cell marker for the ER in Tetrahymena.

A Granular Investigation On The Stability Of Money Demand, Zhengyang Chen, Victor J. Valcarcel Sep 2024

A Granular Investigation On The Stability Of Money Demand, Zhengyang Chen, Victor J. Valcarcel

Faculty Publications

A large literature has shown money demand functions constructed from simple-sum aggregates are unstable. We revisit the controversy surrounding the instability of money demand by examining cointegrating income-money relationships with the Divisia monetary aggregates for the U.S., and compare them with their simple-sum counterparts. We innovate by conducting a more granular analysis of various monetary assets and their associated user costs. We find characterizing money demand with simple-sum measures only works well in a period preceding 1980. Divisia aggregates, their components, and their user costs provide a more reliable interpretation of money demand. Subsample analysis across 1980 and 2008 suggests …

Low-dimensional hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are promising electronically active materials for light absorption and emission. The design space of HOIPs is extremely large, as a variety of organic cations can be combined with different inorganic frameworks. This not only allows for tunable electronic and mechanical properties but also necessitates the development of new tools for in silico high throughput analysis of candidate materials. In this work, we present an accurate, efficient, and widely applicable machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) trained on 86 diverse experimentally reported HOIP materials. This MLIP was tested on 73 experimentally reported perovskite compositions and achieves a …

Using Variable-Resolution Grids To Model Precipitation From Atmospheric Rivers Around The Greenland Ice Sheet, Annelise Waling, Adam Herrington, Katharine Duderstadt, Jack E. Dibb, Elizabeth A. Burakowski

Faculty Publications

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are synoptic-scale features that transport moisture poleward and may cause short-duration, high-volume melt events on the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). In contrast with traditional climate modeling studies that rely on coarse (1 to 2°) grids, this project investigates the effectiveness of variable-resolution (VR) grids in modeling ARs and their subsequent precipitation using refined grid spacing (0.25 and 0.125°) around the GrIS and 1° grid spacing for the rest of the globe in a coupled land–atmosphere model simulation. VR simulations from the Community Earth System Model version 2.2 (CESM2.2) bridge the gap between the limitations of global and …

The Elephant In The Dark Room: A Response To Fair Notice, The Rule Of Law And Reforming Qualified Immunity, Teressa E. Ravenell

Faculty Publications

In response to Professor Chapman’s Fair Notice, the Rule of Law, and Reforming Qualified Immunity, this article examines the viability of Chapman’s proposal to reform qualified immunity by focusing on the “fair notice” rationale. Chapman argues that government officials should not be shielded from liability in cases where they acted in bad faith, violated criminal laws, or engaged in conduct malum in se. This article explores whether such a proposal could meaningfully alter qualified immunity litigation and concludes that significant procedural and historical barriers make this reform unlikely to succeed.

The Evaluation Of Machine Learning Techniques For Isotope Identification Contextualized By Training And Testing Spectral Similarity, Aaron P. Fjelsted, Tyler J. Morrow, Clayton D. Scott, Yilun Zhu, Darren E. Holland, Azaree T. Lintereur, Douglas E. Wolfe

Faculty Publications

Precise gamma-ray spectral analysis is crucial in high-stakes applications, such as nuclear security. Research efforts toward implementing machine learning (ML) approaches for accurate analysis are limited by the resemblance of the training data to the testing scenarios. The underlying spectral shape of synthetic data may not perfectly reflect measured configurations, and measurement campaigns may be limited by resource constraints. Consequently, ML algorithms for isotope identification must maintain accurate classification performance under domain shifts between the training and testing data. To this end, four different classifiers (Ridge, Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Multilayer Perceptron) were trained on the same dataset …

As we face multiple environmental crises (e.g. climate change, nutrient pollution, freshwater scarcity), there is often a disconnect between an entity’s activities and the pollution resulting from that activity. Footprint tools help address this disconnect. They are effective in educating people, institutions and communities on how their resource use results in environmental pollution and what we can do to moderate that pollution. These tools connect an entity’s activities with the associated pollution. Footprint tools are also constantly evolving. As we better understand how to best estimate emissions—especially from sources further removed like those from the supply chain—the guidance and methods …
