Basil And Swiss Chard: Edible Crops For Use In Floating Treatment Wetlands Improving Agricultural Runoff, Clare Escamilla, David R. Tyrpak, William H.J. Stronsnider, Sarah A. White

Faculty Publications

The plant species established within floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) influence nutrient removal efficiency. To enhance adoption of FTWs by agricultural producers, both economic and ecological benefits from FTWs are needed to increase their use within irrigation retention reservoirs. Thus, we ascertained the feasibility of growing food crops in FTWs by evaluating two edible plant species to determine survivability and nutrient accumulation when grown in FTWs. We quantified plant growth (at saleable/harvestable size), nutrient uptake in root and shoot tissues, and overall nutrient removal efficiency of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) and Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris) over a …

Increasing A-Type Co32− Substitution Decreases The Modulus Of Apatite Nanocrystals, Stephanie Wong, Abigail Eaton, Christina Krywka, Arun Nair, Christophe Drouet, Alix Deymier

Faculty Publications

Biological apatite mineral is highly substituted with carbonate (CO32−). CO32− can exchange for either phosphate, known as B-type, or hydroxyl groups, known as A-type. Although the former has been extensively studied, A-type CO32− substituted apatites are poorly understood. Therefore, A-type CO32− apatites with biologically relevant levels of CO32− (1.7–5.8 wt%) were prepared and characterized. The addition of A-type CO32− into the apatite structure caused the predicted expansion of the a-axis and contraction of the c-axis in the unit cell. This was accompanied by a significant modification in the atomic …

Race, The Academy, And The Constitution Of The War On Drugs, Bennett Capers, Jeffrey Bellin

Faculty Publications

The war on drugs is widely viewed as a policy failure. Despite massive government intrusions on personal liberty, drug addiction, overdoses, and drug-related violence have only increased since the war was declared in 1971. David Pozen’s new book, The Constitution of the War on Drugs, reveals a constitutional failure as well. Pozen chronicles a host of constitutional arguments that American litigants deployed to protect a “right” to use drugs with surprising, if fleeting, success. Pozen asks what might have been, exploring why the courts backtracked and effectively removed the Constitution as a meaningful obstacle to drug prohibitions.

This study assessed the practice of bullying, health risk behavior and quality of life in adolescent boys and girls from the city of Maringá, Paraná. A representative sample of 1,020 adolescents participated in the study to assess the association between bullying, health-risk behavior, and quality of life factors through self-reported questionnaires. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were obtained using both crude and adjusted binary and ordinal logistic regression, with a significance level of p< 0.05. Male bullying perpetrators were 2.2 (95%CI=1.4-3.4) and 2.0 (95%CI=1.2-3.2) times more likely to consume alcohol and engage in physical activity compared to non-bullying males. Female bullying perpetrators were 2.1 (95%CI=1.3-3.5), 3.6 (95%CI=1.3-10.1), 1.8 (95%CI=1.1-2.9), and 2.7 (95%CI=1.1-6.3) times more likely to smoke, use illicit drugs, be addicted to smartphones, and have poorer sleep quality. These girls also had a 60% higher chance of having a worse perception of quality of life, respectively, compared to non-bullying females. The conclusion drawn is that bullying may be associated with health risk behaviors for both boys and girls.

Modulating The Aqueous Micellar Reorganization Of Sequence-Defined Ionic Peptoid Block Copolymers By Ionizable Monomer Position And Solution Ph, Bailee N. Barrett, Pedram Azizihariri, Vijay T. John, Donghui Zhang

Faculty Publications

The micellar aggregation of singly charged sequence-defined ionic peptoid block copolymers can be finely tuned by adjusting the position of the ionizable monomer along the chain and varying the solution pH. The pH-induced structural reorganization of these micelles was found to depend on the position of the ionizable monomer along the chain, influencing the balance of the hydrophobic interactions, excluded volume effect, and electrostatic forces (i.e., charge repulsion, solvation of the ionic monomers, counterion association) that govern the micellar structure. As the solution pH increases, positioning the ionizable monomer closer to the junction of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks causes …

We present an investigation involving the tuning of the magnetic, magnetocaloric, and room-temperature structural properties of Mn65-xGa17C18+x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) compounds prepared using a high-energy ball milling (HEBM) technique. This study indicates that the crystal structure of all the compounds can be described as an anti-perovskite cubic structure with the Pm-3m space group and the crystal cell volume decreases with increasing carbon concentration. The system shows a first-order structural phase transition at a temperature T = TM between two cubic phases having different magnetic structures. The phases are characterized by antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) -like behavior at …

Potential Of Individual Upper-Limb Muscles To Contribute To Postural Tremor: Simulations From Neural Drive To Joint Rotation, Spencer A. Baker, Landon J. Beutler, Daniel B. Free, Dario Farina, Steven Knight Charles

Faculty Publications

Background: It is unclear which muscles contribute most to tremor and should therefore be targeted by tremor suppression methods. Previous studies used mathematical models to investigate how upper-limb biomechanics affect muscles’ potential to generate tremor. These investigations yielded principles, but the models included at most only 15 muscles. Here we expand previous models to include 50 upper-limb muscles, simulate tremor propagation, and test the validity of the previously postulated principles. Methods: Tremor propagation was characterized using the gains between tremorogenic neural drive to the 50 muscles (inputs) and tremulous joint rotations in the 7 joint degreesof- freedom (DOF) from shoulder …

We replicate and extend Flammer’s (2013) event study of investor reaction to environmental corporate social responsibility (CSR). Flammer found that investors reacted positively to eco-friendly events and negatively to eco-harmful events from 1980-2009 and that reaction to positive events decreased while reaction to negative events increased over time. We find similar results for Flamer’s original sample and an expanded sample including the same type of firms (U.S.-listed public firms) from 1980-2019. We then extend Flammer’s results by examining how materiality affects investor reaction over time. We find that investors only react to material events and that positive reaction to material …

Changes In Foliar Chemistry And Nutrient Resorption In Northern Hardwood Forests In Response To Long-Term Experimental Nitrogen And Phosphorus Addition, Jenna M. Zukswert, Timothy J. Fahey, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Daniel S. Hong, Ruth D. Yanai

Faculty Publications

Northern hardwood forests have long been assumed to be primarily nitrogen limited, but may often be co-limited by multiple elements. Nutrient limitation can be inferred through responses of foliar and litter chemistry to nutrient addition over time. We compared community-level foliar and litter chemistry and resorption efficiency in a long-term, factorial nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization study across 10 forest stands at three sites in New Hampshire, where N and P were added annually. We measured N, P, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) in foliage from codominant trees and in fresh litter in 2008–2010 (pretreatment) and again …

Magnetar giant flares (MGFs) are the most energetic non-catastrophic transients known to originate from stellar objects. The first discovered events were nearby. In recent years, several extragalactic events have been identified, implying an extremely high volumetric rate. We show that future instruments with a sensitivity ≲5 × 10−9 erg cm−2 at ∼1 MeV will be dominated by extragalactic MGFs over short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs). Clear discrimination of MGFs requires intrinsic GRB localization capability to identify host galaxies. As MGFs involve a release of a sizable fraction of the neutron star's magnetic free energy reservoir in a single event, …

Biomass burning (BB) affects air quality and climate by releasing large quantities of gaseous and particulate pollutants into the atmosphere. Photochemical processing during daylight transforms these emissions, influencing their overall environmental impact. Accurately quantifying the photochemical drivers, namely actinic flux and photolysis frequencies, is crucial to constraining this chemistry. However, the complex radiative transfer within BB plumes presents a significant challenge for both direct observations and numerical models.

This study introduces an expanded version of the 1D VLIDORT-QS radiative transfer (RT) model, named VLIDORT for photochemistry (VPC). VPC is designed for photochemical and remote sensing applications, particularly in BB plumes …
