In order to decrease the electricity consumption of hydrogen generation, hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis is intensively investigated recently. Herein, hierarchical nanostructure of ultrathin NiCo(OH)x nanosheets (NSs) that in-situ grown on the NiCoP nanowires (NWs) was deposited on nickel foam (NF) to construct NiCo(OH)x@NiCoP/NF electrode. NiCoP NWs extend the surface area, spatial utilization of NF and enhance the electron conduction to the outmost NiCo(OH)x NSs. NiCo(OH)x NSs interlace to form regular mesoporous channels, which improve the structural stability and mass transfer rate. Moreover, NiCoP NWs enhance the adsorption of protons and the transfer of electrons, while NiCo(OH) …

Background: Research in youth sports is often complex. As interest in youth sports injury prevention grows, scientists should consider community priorities beyond a specific research study.

Main Text: This commentary discusses the authors’ personal experiences researching concussion prevention in middle school sports, as the overarching community faced multiple challenges. These challenges included a series of weather-related emergencies that resulted in a shift in the community’s priorities, multi-day school closures, and cancellations of sports activities and meetings. We discuss the importance of considering community priorities and providing support as scientists, colleagues, and members of the …

Shake Slice And Shake Concordant Links, Anthony Bosman Jul 2020

Shake Slice And Shake Concordant Links, Anthony Bosman

© 2020 World Scientific Publishing Company. We can construct a 4-manifold by attaching 2-handles to a 4-ball with framing r along the components of a link in the boundary of the 4-ball. We define a link as r-shake slice if there exists embedded spheres that represent the generators of the second homology of the 4-manifold. This naturally extends r-shake slice, a generalization of slice that has previously only been studied for knots, to links of more than one component. We also define a relative notion of shaker-concordance for links and versions with stricter conditions on the embedded spheres that we …

Do You Feel In Control? Sexual Desire, Sexual Passion Expression, And Associations With Perceived Compulsivity To Pornography And Pornography Use Frequency, Nathan D. Leonhardt, Dean M. Busby, Brian J. Willoughby Jul 2020

Do You Feel In Control? Sexual Desire, Sexual Passion Expression, And Associations With Perceived Compulsivity To Pornography And Pornography Use Frequency, Nathan D. Leonhardt, Dean M. Busby, Brian J. Willoughby

Faculty Publications

Previous scholars have found that when individuals feel that pornography use is uncontrollable, it is linked to more extreme negative outcomes than frequency of use. With a Mechanical Turk sample of 1421 individuals, we used structural equation modeling to evaluate how multiple aspects of sexual desire (sexual drive and dyadic desire) and multiple aspects of sexual passion expression (harmonious, obsessive, and inhibited) were associated with both pornography use frequency and perceived compulsivity to pornography. In general, sexual desire was more connected to pornography use and sexual passion was more connected to perceived compulsivity. Specifically, sexual drive was associated with higher …

© 2020. This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Zooplankton play an important role in global biogeochemistry, and their secondary production supports valuable fisheries of the world's oceans. Currently, zooplankton standing stocks cannot be estimated using remote sensing techniques. Hence, coupled physical–biogeochemical models (PBMs) provide an important tool for studying zooplankton on regional and global scales. However, evaluating the accuracy of zooplankton biomass estimates from PBMs has been a major challenge due to sparse observations. In this study, we configure a PBM for the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) from 1993 to 2012 and validate the model …

Pursuit Of Harmony: Relational And Individual Predictors Of Sexual Passion Expression, Nathan D. Leonhardt, Dean M. Busby, Chanae Valdez

Faculty Publications

Harmonious, obsessive, and inhibited sexual passion comprise the Triadic Model of Sexual Passion. Research has shown that together they play an important role in sexual and relationship satisfaction. Little is known, however, about the factors that predict the likelihood of having these types of passion expression. Using a Mechanical Turk sample of 1414 individuals, we estimated structural equation models to evaluate how relationship factors (i.e., relationship length, sexual desire, sexual drive) and individual factors (i.e., attachment style, childhood abuse, personality) predict the three constructs from the Triadic Model of Sexual Passion. In general, those with higher sexual desire, secure attachment, …

Nanogels, or nanostructured hydrogels, are one of the most interesting materials in biomedical engineering. Nanogels are widely used in medical applications, such as in cancer therapy, targeted delivery of proteins, genes and DNAs, and scaffolds in tissue regeneration. One salient feature of nanogels is their tunable responsiveness to external stimuli. In this review, thermosensitive nanogels are discussed, with a focus on moieties in their chemical structure which are responsible for thermosensitivity. These thermosensitive moieties can be classified into four groups, namely, polymers bearing amide groups, ether groups, vinyl ether groups and hydrophilic polymers bearing hydrophobic groups. These novel thermoresponsive nanogels …

Lipocalin 2 Induces Neuroinflammation And Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction Through Liver-Brain Axis In Murine Model Of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis, Ayan Mondal, Dipro Bose, Punnag Saha, Sutapa Sarkar, Ratanesh K. BACKGROUND:

Recent clinical and basic research implicated a strong correlation between NAFLD/NASH phenotypes with ectopic manifestations including neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, but the mediators and critical pathways involved are not well understood. Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) is one of the important mediators exclusively produced in the liver and circulation during NASH pathology.

METHODS:

Using murine model of NASH, we studied the role of Lcn2 as a potent mediator of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in NASH pathology via the liver-brain axis. RESULTS: Results showed that high circulatory Lcn2 activated 24p3R (Lipocalin2 receptor) in the brain and induced the release of high mobility group box …

Terrorism And Right-Wing Extremism: History And Comparative Definitions, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako, Caleb Grant Hill

Faculty Publications

Recent narratives on terrorism have focused on the definitions. Terrorism is not a new phenomenon, but the problem resides in its definition and who is defining it. Conceptualizing terrorism depends on which framework one utilizes. The use of different lenses to define the term has contributed to the lack of global acceptance of what constitutes terrorism, hence the difficulty of gathering data for analysis. It is also a conundrum when powerful nations legitimize their terrorist activities against weaker ones. This, unfortunately, has led to the subjectiveness of every attempt in the literature to objectively provide a globally acceptable definition. Using …

A Letter To Reconsider The Conditions For Testing Decontaminated N95 Respirators For Emergency Reuse To Address Shortage, Eric P. Vejerano, Jeonghyeon Ahn

Faculty Publications

The battle with COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the shortage of personal protective equipment, particularly, N95 respirators. Healthcare workers who reused N95 respirators may resort to unproven methods of cleaning/sterilization that can severely compromise the respirators’ filtration efficiency. A recently issued guideline will test decontaminated N95 respirators against particles with a median diameter of 0.075 ± 0.020 µm at a flow rate of 85 L min–1. For emergency reuse, these conditions may be too stringent. N95 respirators tested at this flow rate had predicted efficiencies of < 69%, assuming complete degradation of their electrostatic coating. Experimental efficiencies were ~15% lower. For emergency reuse, we recommend to either adjust the flow rate closer to normal breathing, or the size of the test particle should reflect that of virus-laden respiratory aerosols (~> 0.5 µm). By reconsidering the test conditions, a substantial fraction of used/decontaminated respirators can …

The measurement of minuscule forces and displacements with ever greater precision is inhibited by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which imposes a limit to the precision with which the position of an object can be measured continuously, known as the standard quantum limit1–4. When light is used as the probe, the standard quantum limit arises from the balance between the uncertainties of the photon radiation pressure applied to the object and of the photon number in the photoelectric detection. The only way to surpass the standard quantum limit is by introducing correlations between the position/momentum uncertainty of the object and the …

Highlights Of Clinical Practice Guideline For The Management Of Community-Acquired Pneumonia: 2019 Update By The American Thoracic Society And Infectious Diseases Society Of America, Hongmei Wang, Molly Brong, Shirley Pham, Diane Dreucean

Faculty Publications

Pneumonia is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. The American Thoracic Society and The Infectious Diseases Society of America recently published updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia. Initial antibiotic therapy should cover for Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and other gram-negative bacilli. Patients who have risk factors for the development of antibiotic resistant pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa should have appropriate empiric coverage for these pathogens. The recommended duration of treatment of community-acquired pneumonia is a minimum of 5 days in conjunction with clinical improvement, which has remained …

A Discrete Hidden Markov Model For Sms Spam Detection, Tian Xia, Xuemin Chen

Faculty Publications

Many machine learning methods have been applied for short messaging service (SMS) spam detection, including traditional methods such as naive Bayes (NB), vector space model (VSM), and support vector machine (SVM), and novel methods such as long short-term memory (LSTM) and the convolutional neural network (CNN). These methods are based on the well-known bag of words (BoW) model, which assumes documents are unordered collection of words. This assumption overlooks an important piece of information, i.e., word order. Moreover, the term frequency, which counts the number of occurrences of each word in SMS, is unable to distinguish the importance of words, …

Racial Justice Conflict: How "Historical" Racial Symbols Shape Perception , Practices, And Policy, Judy Rashid

Faculty Publications

As the world continues to grapple with racial injustice and widespread unrest—marked by protests from people of all ethnic backgrounds—this article examines the subliminal influence of historical racial symbols and practices. It focuses on statues and monuments, slave plantation sites and tours, market houses where enslaved people were sold, and street names bearing the scars of slavery. These enduring symbols and practices shape public perception and contribute to systemic discriminatory practices and policies. The article encourages readers to critically reflect on how such practices may reinforce inequality and obstruct efforts toward effective racial justice conflict management.

Day, Raj Boopathy, John R. White, Scott Wallace, Rachael G. Hunter

Faculty Publications

Emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) include a diverse group of chemical compounds, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, hormones, surfactants, flame retardants and plasticizers. Many of these compounds are not significantly removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants and are discharged to the environment, presenting an increasing threat to both humans and natural ecosystems. Recently, antibiotics have received considerable attention due to growing microbial antibiotic-resistance in the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have proven effective in removing many EOCs, including different antibiotics, before discharge of treated wastewater into the environment. Wastewater treatment systems that couple conventional treatment plants with constructed …

Fraudulent and deceptive environmental claims in marketing (sometimes called “greenwashing”) are a persistent problem in the United States, despite nearly thirty years of efforts by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prevent it. This Essay focuses on a recent trend in greenwashing - fraudulent “organic” claims for nonagricultural products, such as home goods and personal care products. We offer three recommendations. First, we suggest ways that the FTC can strengthen its oversight of “organic” claims for nonagricultural products and improve coordination with the USDA. Second, we argue for inclusion of guidelines for “organic” claims in the next revision of the …

The generalized amplitude-damping channel (GADC) is one of the sources of noise in superconducting-circuit-based quantum computing. It can be viewed as the qubit analog of the bosonic thermal channel, and it thus can be used to model lossy processes in the presence of background noise for low-temperature systems. In this work, we provide an information-theoretic study of the GADC. We first determine the parameter range for which the GADC is entanglement breaking and the range for which it is antidegradable. We then establish several upper bounds on its classical, quantum, and private capacities. These bounds are based on data-processing inequalities …

By implementing the Lanczos algorithm, we compute nonenergy weighted, energy weighted, and inverse energy weighted sum rules for electric monopole, dipole, and quadrupole transitions in He4 using realistic interactions. We benchmark the results with the hyperspherical harmonics method and show agreement within 2σ, where the uncertainties are estimated from the use of the many-body technique. We investigate the dependence of the results on three different interactions, including chiral potentials, and we report on the He4 electric dipole polarizability calculated in the SA-NCSM that …

This review discusses recent experimental and theoretical analyses of high-harmonic spectroscopy in small molecules, with the aim of characterizing charge migration. We discuss the formulation of molecular high-harmonic spectra followed by methods to extract molecular-target-specific information, both in experiments and ab initio simulations. We present measured and simulated high-harmonic spectra from carbon dioxide and carbonyl sulfide to illustrate the necessity for multidimensional analyses for high-harmonic spectroscopies that include both the spectral amplitude and phase. Leveraging these results, we examine how such multidimensional analyses pave the way for the study of charge migration with high-harmonic spectroscopy and illustrate the beneficial role …

Squeezed light—light with quantum noise lower than shot noise in some quadratures and higher in others—can be used to improve the sensitivity of precision measurements. In particular, squeezed light sources based on nonlinear optical crystals are being used to improve the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors. In optomechanical squeezers, the radiation-pressure-driven interaction of a coherent light field with a mechanical oscillator induces correlations between the amplitude and phase quadratures of the light, which induce the squeezing. However, thermally driven fluctuations of the mechanical oscillator’s position make it difficult to observe the quantum correlations at room temperature and at low frequencies. …
