The Use Of Nuclear Reactions And Sims For Quantitative Depth Profiling Of Hydrogen In Amorphous Silicon, David D. Allred, G. J. Clark, C. W. White, B. R. Appleton, C. W. Magee, D. E. Carlson
Faculty Publications
Depth profiles for hydrogen in amorphous silicon have been determined by the use of resonant nuclear reactions [1H(15N,αγ)12C and 1H(19F,αγ)16O] and by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Independent calibration procedures were used for the two techniques. Measurements were made on the same amorphous silicon film to provide a direct comparison of the two hydrogen analysis techniques. The hydrogen concentration in the bulk of the film was determined to be about 9 at % H. The SIMS results agree with the resonant nuclear reaction results to within 10%, which demonstrates that quantitative hydrogen depth profiles can be obtained by SIMS analysis …

Measurement Of The Difference Between The Dynamic Nmr And Static Susceptibilites Of Superfluid 3he-B Using An Rf-Biased Superconducting Quantum-Interference Device, Richard A. Webb
Faculty Publications
The temperature-dependent susceptiblity of superfluid 3He-B has been measured both statically and via a pulse technique in a field of 309 G using an rf-biased superconducting quantum-interference device (SQUID). In the pressure range 26.5 to 18 bar, the dynamic NMR susceptiblity agrees qualitatively with the theoretical weak-coupling predictions for the Balian-Werthamer state. However, the static susceptiblity, measured using the same rf-biased SQUID and detection system, is significantly smaller thatn the dynamic susceptibility.

The authors are pleased to acknowledge: the support of this research by the National Science Foundation under Grant DMR 74-21243 and by the provision of computer time by The Ohio State University and by Battelle Columbus Laboratories; and helpful comments on the manuscript by V Vitek. Computer simulation is used to obtain the plane strain and non-plane strain equilibrium core structures for the a/2 <111> {110} edge dislocation in alpha-iron as modelled by the Johnson potential. The methods of the integral formulation of anisotropic linear eleasticity theory are employed in the analysis. Flexible core boundary methods reveal that positive volume expansions …111>

One-Dimensional Hydrogenic Atom In An Electric Field With Solid-State Applications, R. F. O'Connell
One-Dimensional Hydrogenic Atom In An Electric Field With Solid-State Applications, R. F. O'Connell
Faculty Publications
A Hamiltonian describing a one-dimensional Coulomb field with an electric field in the same direction is useful for the discussion of electrons outside a free surface of liquid helium [1,2] and also for the study of far-infrared emission from Si inversion layers [3]. We present both a semi-classical and a WKB solution to the problem, which exhibits many of the features found experimentally. © 1977.

Intermolecular Potential Surfaces From Electron Gas Methods. Ii. Angle And Distance Dependence Of The A’ And A” Ar–No(X^2ii) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack
Faculty Publications
Angle dependent intermolecular potential energy surfaces for the two states (2A’ and 2A”) that arise from the interaction of ground (X^2II) state NO with Ar are calculated using the electron gas model to obtain the short range interactions. The average and difference of the two interaction energies are fit to analytic forms convenient for use in scattering calculations and joined smoothly onto the long range van der Waals potential previously determined. The results, which appear to be of useful accuracy, and the applicability of the electron gas model to such open shell–closed shell interactions are discussed.
Towards Integrated Protection From The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster
Towards Integrated Protection From The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster
Faculty Publications
Current southern pine beetle ( Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.) control depends heavily upon direct approaches having short-term payoffs. Chemical or physical tactics have fidled to check epidemics in the Gulf South. A major challenge lies in developing and using indirect methods for managing this pest. Promotion of stand resistance and biotic agents, and manipulation of stand density and cutting practices, hold prospect for reducing the incidence and severity of beetle-caused losses.

Law-Focused Education: Iowa, University Of Northern Iowa
Faculty Publications
This law-focused resource booklet is intended to help secondary level students learn about the civil law portion of Iowa's judicial system. The materials are designed to help students understand how to deal with conflict in a peaceful and orderly manner and how to cope with decision making in personal law situations as related to the family; the market place; the court of law; and the world of work. Section one; comprising about one half of the guide; contains objectives; case studies for student use; and questions for discussion on the following topics: civil law; court procedures; injury and property damage; …

This article will first proceed with a brief discussion of the nature of consent, the origin and application of the Restatement rule, and the exceptions to the rule which limit its application. A detailed analysis of the cases will follow.
Financing Condominiums And Cooperatives, Dale A. Whitman
Financing Condominiums And Cooperatives, Dale A. Whitman
Faculty Publications
This article will deal with legal problems relating to the financing of condominiums and cooperatives. While space does not permit a detailed treatment of the non-financing aspects of these forms of ownership, a rudimentary overview of the legal relationships involved will preface discussion of the central topic. Both condominiums and cooperatives are legal formats for “unit ownership” – that is, the ownership of a physically defined portion of a larger parcel of (usually improved) real property. In the majority of cases, the “unit” is a residential apartment in a multifamily housing project. Condominiums are much more tightly controlled by stage …

Network Characteristics In Suburbanizing Streams, William L. Graf
Network Characteristics In Suburbanizing Streams, William L. Graf
Faculty Publications
Analysis of hydrologic, geomorphic, and suburbanization data from a small instrumented drainage basin near Iowa City, Iowa, indicates that channel networks are radically altered when suburban development overtakes a drainage basin. Changes in channel networks are such that the network becomes much more efficient in collecting water quickly, so that lag time and kurtosis of storm hydrographs are altered to produce the familiar flash floods of urban areas. The data show that network changes are closely associated with lag time and kurtosis of storm hydrographs and suggest that corrective measures should be concentrated on the internal links of the network. …
Potential-Selective Deposition Of Copper From Chloride Solutions Containing Iron, Ralph E. White, James A. Trainham, John Newman, Thomas W. Chapman
Potential-Selective Deposition Of Copper From Chloride Solutions Containing Iron, Ralph E. White, James A. Trainham, John Newman, Thomas W. Chapman
Faculty Publications
The hydrometallurgy of copper may involve leaching of the metal from its ore with an aqueous solution containing cupric and ferric chloride. The subsequent deposition of copper from such a process stream is modeled here in an idealized electrochemical cell with a rotating-disk electrode. The potential distribution and concentration profiles within the diffusion layer are predicted for given potential differences between the electrode and the solution. The cuprous ion, which is formed by the reduction of the complexed cupric ion at the electrode, is stabilized in the chloride solution and can react either at the electrode or with ferric species …

Computer Model Of A Fast Toroidal Plasma Compression, With Application To The Topolotron, H. Mark Nelson, Keith H. Brown, Charles A. Hart
Faculty Publications
The method is developed for a comuputer sequence which models a fast toroidal theta or screw pinch for a highly conducting axially symmetric plasma. The computer sequence takes into account the self-inductances of the plasma and the external conductors which drive the compression as well as the mutual inductance which electromagnetically couples the two. The computer sequence is divided into three phases: a snowplow compression phase, an adiabatic compression phase, and a crowbarred circuit phase. The computer sequence is applied to a topolotron and an example is given of a magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium geometry for which the plasma surface possesses an …
