Identification Of Tasks In Office Occupations: June 1973 Workshop. Final Report, Jack C. Reed
Faculty Publications
A shortened version of the final report of a Federally-funded developmental curriculum research project; the publication presents the findings of a workshop (University of Northern Iowa; 1973) for the purpose of identification of job tasks for entry-level office occupations from research-based materials. Studies by Lamb (Mary Lou); Lanham (Frank W.); and Perkins (Edward A.) were used by the workshop participants to identify job tasks for selected entry-level office occupations. Job performance tasks indicated in the research were the basis for the selection of the following job classifications: stenographer; secretary; receptionist; general office clerk; clerk typist; mail clerk; transcribing machine operator; …
Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …
The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus
The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus
Faculty Publications
The 1973 Supreme Court decision in Wisconsin v. Yoder reenforced and amplified the Court's earlier holding in Sherbert v. Verner that the free exercise clause of the first amendment requires the state to render substantial deference to religiously motivated behavior in the application of its laws and regulatory schemes. In this article, Mr. Marcus traces the evolving standards of free exercise doctrine and observes that the "balancing test" which has resulted from that evolution requires still further refinement to give religious freedom its full constitutional due. The author then illustrates how the new standards of free exercise might be applied …

Fifty‐Four Voices From Two: The Effects Of Simultaneous Manipulations Of Rate, Mean Fundamental Frequency, And Variance Of Fundamental Frequency On Ratings Of Personality From Speech, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
Utterances of two adults males were analyzed and synthesized by a fast Fourier Transforms method. Each of the two voices was synthesized in each of the twenty‐seven combinations of three levels each of rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ (a total of fifty‐four “voices” generated from two). The effects of the rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ manipulations, the interactive effects of rate and variance of FØ, and the effects due to speaker were all statistically significant predictors of personality ratings given the voices. They accounted for 86%, 4%, 3%, 2%, and I% of the …

The Effects Of An Individualized Instruction Workshop And Its Related Follow-Up Program On The Attitudes And Behavior Of Selected Elementary Teachers And Their Students: Final Report, Helen Dell, Warren Kallenbach
Faculty Publications
The effects of an individualized instruction workshop and its related follow-up program on the attitudes and behavior of selected elementary teachers and their students were discussed in this report. Participants were teachers in a four-day workshop on individualizing instruction. The workshop included training in classroom procedures, managing physical facilities, utilizing human resources, and developing techniques for encouraging students to be self-managing. Evaluation methods, questionnaires and observation indicated a favorable change in teacher behavior. The effects of the inservice program for teachers indicated little or no affect on student attitude and independent work habits. (Appendixes of related program material and a …
X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Liquids At Very High Pressures Along The Melting Curve Ii. Sodium, Keith H. Brown, J. Dean Barnett
X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Liquids At Very High Pressures Along The Melting Curve Ii. Sodium, Keith H. Brown, J. Dean Barnett
Faculty Publications
Coherent x-ray diffraction patterns for liquid Na have been extracted from measured patterns at 0.5, 7.5, 17, and 43 kbar along the melting curve. The experimentally determined liquid structure factor and resulting radial distribution function are given at each pressure. The position of the principal x-ray intensity peak is reproducible to within 0.5% and shows shifts of the order of 12%. The resulting nearest neighbor distance in the radial distribution function also shifts 12% but is reproducible only to approximately 2%. The distribution functions obtained at points along the melting curve suggest a simple dimensional compression or scaling; however, a …

X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Liquids At Very High Pressures Along The Melting Curve. I. Methods And Techniques, Keith H. Brown, J. Dean Barnett
Faculty Publications
A technique using the tetrahedral anvil high-pressure x-ray system has been developed to extract coherent x-ray intensity patterns of liquids near melting from measured scattering curves in the presence of high-background counts. Radial distribution functions for liquids along the melting curve to pressures of at least 50 kbar can be obtained. At each pressure scattering curves are recorded for the liquid and solid on opposite sides of the melting curve and a subtraction is made to eliminate background and incoherent scattering. Theoretical estimates of the thermal diffuse scattering from the solid are added to the appropriately corrected difference patterns to …

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith
On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith
Faculty Publications
A simple theory of gas-phase termolecular atomic recombination kinetics is presented which treats the bound-complex (BC) mechanism in a fashion which parallels the Roberts, Bernstein, and Curtiss resonance theory of the energy-transfer (ET) mechanism. The ET rate constant has a low temperature maximum, but the BC rate constant does not. The contributions of the two mechanisms to the low-temperature recombination of hydrogen atoms, with He, Ar, and H2 as third bodies, are estimated and compared. The presence (absence) of a low-temperature maximum in the observable total rate constant is determined by absence (presence) of bound vibrational levels of the hydrogen-third …

Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The key pecking of two pigeons was reinforced with food on a progressive‐ratio schedule, which required an increasing number of responses for each successive reinforcement: 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. When the subject failed to complete the next ratio in the sequence within 60 min, the session terminated. The number of responses in the final completed ratio was defined as the “breaking point”. After the breaking point had stabilized (60 sessions), it served as a baseline to assess the effects of varying doses (5 to 80 mg/kg) of chlordiazepoxide and phenobarbital, administered intramuscularly 30 min before the sessions. Both drugs …
Relationship Of Blood Serum Protein And Protein Fractions To Milk Constituents And Temperature-Season, J. D. Roussel, K. L. Koonce, M. A. Pinero
Relationship Of Blood Serum Protein And Protein Fractions To Milk Constituents And Temperature-Season, J. D. Roussel, K. L. Koonce, M. A. Pinero
Faculty Publications
Blood serum protein and protein fractions were determined in 265 samples from 62 lactating Holstein cows over one calendar year. Temperature-seasonal changes (cool, optimum, hot) were responsible for significant linear and quadratic fluctuation in serum protein fractions. Serum albumin, β-globulin, α2- globulin, and the A:G ratio significantly decreased as seasons progressed from cool to hot. Further, globulin and γ-globulin both increased significantly from cool to hot seasons. An a1bumin:globulin ratio (.56:1) was inverted. Milk fat percentage was positively correlated with serum albumin percentage and a1bumin:globulin ratio and negatively correlated with total serum protein, and serum globulin and γ-globulin percentages. Performance Of Holstein And Crossbred Dairy Cattle In Louisiana. Ii. Growth Rate Through First Lactation, B. F. Hollon, C. Branton, K. L. Koonce
Faculty Publications
Body weights of four groups consisting of 355 crosses among the Brown Swiss, Holstein, Jersey, and Red Sindhi breeds were compared to those of 127 contemporary Holsteins at six ages: birth, 6, 12, 15, and 18 months and in first lactation. Least-squares analyses were used to estimate effects of breed groups, year of birth, proportion of Red Sindhi heredity, and breed by year interactions. Year of birth had a significant (P < .01) influence on body weight, but this was not consistent with respect to breed groups. Purebred Holsteins were larger (P < ,01) than crossbreds at all ages. Among the crossbred groups, Holstein-sired crosses averaged 3% below Holsteins in body weight at the different ages whereas Brown Swiss-sired crosses and two groups of daughters by crossbred sires (one group by Zebu × European crossbred bulls, another by European × European crossbred bulls) ranged from 4 to 17% below Holsteins. Crosses by purebred sires were larger than those by crossbred sires, with the differences in body weight significant (P < .05 or P < .01) at all ages except 6 months. The magnitude of differences was greater after 12 months of age and was probably influenced by a larger proportion of Jersey and Red Sindhi heredity among daughters of crossbred sires. Significant negative linear responses (P < .05 or P < .01) due to proportion of Red Sindhi heredity (1/4 to 1/8, 1/8 to 1/16, 1/16 to 0 and 0) were noted for birth weight, 6 and 18 months and first lactation. The effect of Red Sindhi heredity on body weight appeared to be of an additive genetic nature since body weights increased as the proportion of Red Sindhi breeding decreased. © 1972, American Dairy Science Association. The Specific Theory Of Academic Freedom And The General Issue Of Civil Liberty, William W. Van Alstyne
Faculty Publications
Academic freedom has been blurred in law and in popular usage. Its clarification should enable the Supreme Court to grant it explicit protection under the Constitution as an identifiable subset of First Amendment freedoms. Its identification with the professional endeavors of faculty members, moreover, should reduce the tendency of institutions to intrude upon the aprofessional personal liberties of the faculty even while adequately protecting the extramural professional pursuits of the faculty and assuring them of equal protection in their interests as private citizens. Adjustments of standards by the American Association of University Professors, more definitely distinguishing the special accountability of …

Thirty-three Up Ss were …
High-Pressure Equation Of State For Nacl, Kcl, And Cscl, Daniel L. Decker
High-Pressure Equation Of State For Nacl, Kcl, And Cscl, Daniel L. Decker
Faculty Publications
A calculation of the equation of state for NaCl from a Mie-Grüneisen equation was repeated using more accurate values of the zero-pressure compressibility. It was also extended to KCl and CsCl. An analysis of this approach to pressure calibration indicates that it will yield pressures with about the same accuracy as can be presently achieved by experimental measurements above 25 kbar, and thus furnishes a temporary practical pressure scale.
