The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester
The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester
Faculty Publications
The story of the passion follows the upward movement of the pendulum. It begins with Jesus in the posture of a slave, washing his disciples’ feet (chap. 13); but concludes when Thomas recognizes that Jesus is both Lord and God (20:28), bringing the story back to the high point where it began in 1:1. Each year John’s passion account appears in the lectionary for Holy Week and his story of the resurrection is appointed for Easter and the Sunday after Easter, providing an opportunity for sustained reading and proclamation of these texts. John’s narrative is masterfully told; the drama is …
Not Another Constitutional Law Course: A Proposal To Teach A Course On The Constitution, Thomas E. Baker
Not Another Constitutional Law Course: A Proposal To Teach A Course On The Constitution, Thomas E. Baker
Faculty Publications
Professors Baker and Viator discuss the shortcomings of the current law school constitutional law curriculum. They lament the emphasis on current Supreme Court cases to the almost complete exclusion of the actual text of the Constitution and writings of the intellectual and philosophical history from which it sprang. The professors then lay out a syllabus for their proposed three credit constitutional law class.

The Upholstered, Wood Household Furniture Industry In North America: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
Upholstered, wood household furniture production has become an increasingly important part of total furniture production in the United States. From 1982 to 1987, employment in the upholstered furniture industry grew 16 percent, and in 1987, the industry's 82,100 employees represented about 30 percent of U.S. household furniture indush-y employment (USDC Bureau of the Census 1990). Over the same 5-year period, value added for the upholstered furniture industry increased by 52 percent to more than $2.6 billion.

Soil Properties Relating To Height Growth Of Loblolly Pine On Four Major Soil Series In East Texas, R. Larry Willett, M. Victor Bilan
Faculty Publications
Stem analysis was used to obtain age and height data for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands growing on Bowie, Fuquay, Sacul, and TroupxlsTnortheastern Texas. The soil profiles were described and bulk soil samples were taken in each sample stand. Selected physical and chemical soil properties were measured for each soil horizon. Stepwise regression analysis was used to correlate average stand height at ages 5, 10, 20, and 30 years with soil properties. Strong associations were found between stand height and properties which relate to available soil moisture holding capacity, soil permeability, and soil aeration. For Bowie, Fww , and …

Resin flow and tree moisture stress, frequently used as indicators of pine susceptibility to pine bark beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.) attack, were measured in loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and shortleaf (P. echinata Mill.) pines red-cockaded woodpecker [Picoides boreal& (Vieillot)] cavity trees in the Angelina and Davy Crockett National Forests in eastern Texas. No differences in moisture stress were found, whereas resin flow between different types of cavity trees and control or potential trees varied by site and species. It was concluded that effects of red-cockaded woodpecker activity on host tree susceptibility to southern pine beetle will vary by site, tree …

The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman
The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman
Faculty Publications
While the objective of expanding the Oregon Medicaid program is commendable, the means adopted by the Oregon legislature to control the costs of the expansion are problematic. This paper examines the legislature's approach from a legal perspective. The first part of the paper determines whether it is consistent with federal and state law governing the Medicaid program. Oregon is seeking waivers from any conflicting federal requirements, and since there do not appear to be any constitutional impediments, the key question is whether the waivers should be granted as a matter of sound public policy. The second and third parts of …

Detection And Strain Differentiation Of Chlamydia Psittaci Mediated By A Two-Step Polymerase Chain Reaction, B. Kaltenboeck, K. G. Kousoulas, J. Storz
Faculty Publications
Specific and sensitive amplification of major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene DNA sequences of Chlamydia psittaci was achieved in a two-step polymerase chain reaction. First, oligonucleotide primers specific for 5' and 3' nontranslated regulatory regions of the MOMP gene were used in a polymerase chain reaction to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 1,400 bp. A portion of this DNA fragment was amplified in a second reaction using a degenerate oligonucleotide primer specific for a DNA sequence contained within the 1,400-bp DNA fragment and one of the first-step primers. This method detected 10 cognate chlamydial genomes. C. psittaci MOMP genes …

On Minors Avoiding Elements In Matroids, James G. Oxley
On Minors Avoiding Elements In Matroids, James G. Oxley
Faculty Publications
Let ℱ be a collection of 3-connected matroids, none a proper minor of another, such that if M is a 3-connected matroid having a proper ℱ-minor and e is an element of M, then M has an ℱ-minor avoiding e. This paper proves that there are precisely two collections ℱ with this property: {U2,4} and {U2,4, M(K4)}. Several extensions of this result and some similar results for 2-connected matroids are also established. © 1991, Academic Press Limited. All rights reserved.

Let n be an integer exceeding one and M be a matroid having at least n + 2 elements. In this paper, we prove that every n-element subset X of E(M) is in an (n + 1)-element circuit if and only if (i) for every such subset, M X is disconnected, and (ii) for every subset Y with at most n elements, M Y is connected. Various extensions and consequences of this result are also derived including characterizations in terms of connectivity of the 4-point line and of Murty's Sylvester matroids. The former is a result of Seymour. © 1991.

In this note we determine when a collection of subsets of a set E is the set of non-spanning circuits of a matroid on E. This result is then used to characterize when a matroid on E is uniquely determined by its set of non-spanning circuits. © 1991, Academic Press Limited. All rights reserved.

Let M = Γ\N be a compact nilmanifold. A system of differential operators D1, …, Dk on M is globally hypoelliptic (GH) if when D1f = g1,…, Dkf=gk with f ∈ D’ (M), g1, …, gk ∈ C∞ (M) then f ∈ C∞ (M). Let X1, …, Xk be real vector fields on M induced by the Lie algebra N of N. We study the relationships between (GH) of the system X1, …, Xk on M, (GH) of the operator D = X12 + … + Xk2, the constancy of D-harmonic distributions on M, and related algebraic conditions on X1, …
Distributional Solutions Of The Wiener-Hopf Integral And Integro-Differential Equations, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Distributional Solutions Of The Wiener-Hopf Integral And Integro-Differential Equations, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
We present the theory and technique for obtaining the distributional solutions for the Wiener-Hopf integral and integro-differential equations. This is achieved by identifying a class of kernels for which these equations are well defined and are of the Fredholm type. Consequently, the associated operators and their images are of finite dimensions. Furthermore, we define the operators in such a way that the corresponding equations hold at the end points; otherwise, the equations are usually ill-behaved. We illustrate our analysis with the help of various examples. © 1991, Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium. All Rights Reserved.

Acrosomal integrity of bovine spermatozoa was evaluated using naphthol yellow S-erythrosine B stain with bright field microscopy, .2% glutaraldehyde fixation with Nomarski optics, and live wet smears with Nomarski optics to compare the evaluation techniques. Four ejaculates per two Holstein bulls were enriched through a Percoll gradient, capacitated with heparin, and acrosome-reacted with lysophosphatidylcholine to prepare spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization. Spermatozoa samples were taken after each preparatory step, and percentage of intact acrosomes was evaluated with the stain, .2% glutaraldehyde, and live wet smear. Acrosomal integrity decreased with each preparatory step across all techniques. The decrease in integrity from …
