Accumulation Hole Layer In P-Gan/Algan Heterostructures, M. S. Shur, A. D. Bykhovski, R. Gaska, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. A. Khan

Faculty Publications

We present the results on piezoelectric and pyroelectricdoping in AlGaN-on-GaN and GaN-on-AlGaN heterostructures and demonstrate p-GaN/AlGaN structures with accumulation hole layer. Our results indicate that polarization charge can induce up to 5×1013 cm−2 holes at the AlGaN/GaN heterointerfaces. We show that the transition from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) hole gas can be only achieved for hole sheet densities on the order of 1013 cm−2 or higher. At lower densities, only 3D-hole accumulation layer may exist. These results suggest that a piezoelectrically induced 2D-hole gas can be used for the reduction of the base spreading resistance …

Twice a year, in the May ann November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-mouth period preceding the complication of the bibliography (July through December; 1999, for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors We encourage you to send your suggestions …

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak May 2000

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part Ii: Asymmetric Constellations, Motohiko Isaka, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai May 2000

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part Ii: Asymmetric Constellations, Motohiko Isaka, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

In this paper, multilevel coded asymmetric modulation with multistage decoding and unequal error protection (UEP) is discussed. These results further emphasize the fact that unconventional signal set partitionings are more promising than traditional (Ungerboeck-type) partitionings, to achieve UEP capabilities with multilevel coding and multistage decoding. Three types of unconventional partitionings are analyzed for asymmetric 8-PSK and 16-QAM constellations over the additive white Gaussian noise channel to introduce design guidelines. Generalizations to other PSK and QAM type constellations follow the same lines. Upper bounds on the bit-error probability based on union bound arguments are first derived. In some cases, these bounds …

The dependence of the photon structure on the photon virtuality, Q2, is studied by measuring the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + jet + X at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 134 < W < 223 GeV. Events have been selected in the Q2 ranges ≃ 0 GeV2, 0.1-0.55 GeV2, and 1.5-4.5 GeV2, having two jets with transverse energy E(T)/(jet) > 5.5 GeV in the final state. The dijet cross section has been measured as a function of the fractional momentum of the photon participating in the hard process, x(γ)/(OBS). The ratio of the dijet cross section with x(γ)/(OBS) < 0.75 to that with x(γ)/(OBS) > 0.75 decreases as Q2 increases. The data are compared with the predictions of NLO pQCD and leading-order Monte Carlo programs using various parton distribution functions of the photon. The measurements can …

Optical Properties Of The Kara Sea, Donald R. Johnson, Vernon L. Asper, Thomas Mcclimans, Alan D. Weidemann

Faculty Publications

This study was motivated by the need to understand dispersion processes which affect the redistribution of nuclear wastes in the Arctic from dump sites in the Kara Sea and in the rivers which flow into the Kara Sea. We focus on vertical profiles of light beam transmission and fluorometry made over the delta region fronting the Ob and Yenisey Rivers and over the East Novaya Zemlya Trough (ENZT). The delta region fronting the Ob River Estuary contains a large repository of particles in a dense bottom nepheloid layer with a maximum centered similar to 100 km in front of the …

Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies Have "Normal" Luminosities, Bradley E. Schaefer Apr 2000

Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies Have "Normal" Luminosities, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

The galactic environment of gamma-ray bursts can provide good evidence about the nature of the progenitor system, with two old arguments implying that the burst host galaxies are significantly subluminous. New data and new analysis have now reversed this picture: (1) Even though the first two known host galaxies are indeed greatly subluminous, the next eight hosts have absolute magnitudes typical for a population of field galaxies. A detailed analysis of the 16 known hosts (10 with redshifts) shows them to be consistent with a Schlechter luminosity function with R* = -21.8 ± 1.0, as expected for normal galaxies. (2) …

Researchers Explore Arctic Freshwater's Role In Ocean Circulation, Steven L. Forman, Wieslaw Maslowski, John T. Andrews, David Lubinski, Michael Steele, Jain Zhang, Richard B. Lammers, Bruce Peterson

Faculty Publications

A critical, but insufficiently understood, component of global change is the influence of Arctic freshwater input on water mass exchange between the Arctic Ocean and Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Four of the Earth's 10 largest river systems, the Mackenzie, Ob,Yenisei, and Lena, contribute water to the Arctic shore (Figure 1) from a vast watershed that drains continental interiors. This river discharge flows into the world's largest contiguous continental shelf and supplies over 50% (1823 km3 ) of the riverine input to the Arctic Ocean.

Getting The Faith: Why Business Lawyers And Executives Believe In Mediation, John M. Lande Apr 2000

Getting The Faith: Why Business Lawyers And Executives Believe In Mediation, John M. Lande

Faculty Publications

Do you believe in mediation? That may seem like an odd question. Normally one thinks of ‘believing in‘ (or having faith in) things like magic, God, or the market. These are typically things that are beyond verifiable human knowledge (such as magic and God) and/or deeply held values (such as whether the market is a better mechanism than government for managing the flow of goods and services). At first blush, one might not think that mediation would fall into either category. There have been numerous empirical studies about many different aspects of mediation, so one can confidently say, for example, …

Statutory Interpretation, Property Rights, And Boundaries: The Nature And Limits Of Protection In Trademark Dilution, Trade Dress, And Product Configuration Cases, Gary Myers Apr 2000

Statutory Interpretation, Property Rights, And Boundaries: The Nature And Limits Of Protection In Trademark Dilution, Trade Dress, And Product Configuration Cases, Gary Myers

Faculty Publications

This article, however, takes the view that the basic landscape in trademark law is unlikely to change in the near future. Congress has only recently enacted the Trademark Dilution Act, and there seems to be little movement to amend it dramatically, let alone repeal it. There have been several recently enacted amendments to the Lanham Act addressing functionality that make great sense and are consistent with the principles suggested here, as will be discussed below. Moreover, the Supreme Court in Two Pesos, Qualitex, Park ‘n’ Fly, and Samara has recently set forth rules that will allow trade dress claims to …

Fuel Optimization For Constrained Rotation Of Satellite Formations, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Fred Y. Hadaegh Apr 2000

Fuel Optimization For Constrained Rotation Of Satellite Formations, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Fred Y. Hadaegh

Faculty Publications

This paper considers the problem of reorienting a constellation of spacecraft such that the fuel distributed across the constellation is both conserved and expended uniformly. Results are derived for constellations with an arbitrary number of spacecraft, assuming that the constellation is in free space, that the spacecraft mass is time invariant, and that the thrusters can produce thrust in any direction. An open-loop control algorithm is derived by minimizing a cost function that trades off total fuel minimization and fuel equalization. The associated optimization problem is shown to be amenable to standard algorithms. Simulation results using a four-spacecraft constellation are …

Unmanned Research Vehicle (Urv): Development, Implementation, & Flight Test Of A Mimo Digital Flight Control System Designed Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Constantine H. Houpis, Steven J. Rasmussen

Faculty Publications

The Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) design technique, which has the ability to bridge the gap between theory and the real-world control design problem, is utilized in the design of a MIMO digital flight control system for an unmanned research vehicle (URV) that is presented in this paper. The design illustrates how the real-world knowledge of the plant to be controlled and the desired performance specifications can be utilized in trying to achieve a successful robust design for a nonlinear control problem. This paper presents some of the issues involved in developing, implementing, and flight testing a flight control system (FCS) …

The Character Of Ash Deposits And The Thermal Performance Of Furnaces, T. F. Wall, S. P. Bhattacharya, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, G. Richards, J. N. Harb Mar 2000

The Character Of Ash Deposits And The Thermal Performance Of Furnaces, T. F. Wall, S. P. Bhattacharya, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, G. Richards, J. N. Harb

Faculty Publications

The character of fireside ash deposits depend on the processes by which deposits are formed and subsequent reactions within the deposit and with furnace gases. The properties influencing furnace heat transfer, absorptivity for radiative transfer and thermal conductivity for conductive transfer are shown from many measurements to depend on this character. Illustrative trends in these properties as deposits mature and grow are presented together with their effect on furnace exit temperature and efficiency. The reflective character of initial deposits from particular coals is then considered with predictions and measurements of the spectral character of such deposits, during the first three …

Designing Human-Centered Automation: Tradeoffs In Collision Avoidance System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer Mar 2000

Designing Human-Centered Automation: Tradeoffs In Collision Avoidance System Design, Michael A. Goodrich, Erwin R. Boer

Faculty Publications

Technological advances have made plausible the design of automated systems that share responsibility with a human operator. The decision to use automation to assist or replace a human operator in safety-critical tasks must account for not only the technological capabilities of the sensor and control subsystems, but also the autonomy, capabilities, and preferences of the human operator. By their nature, such human-centered automation problems have multiple attributes: an attribute reflecting human goals and capabilities, and an attribute reflecting automation goals and capabilities. Although good theories exist that describe portions of human behavior generation, in the absence of a general theory …

Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala Mar 2000

Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Alternate path routing has been well-explored in telecommunication networks as a means of decreasing the call blocking rate and increasing network utility. However, aside from some work applying these concepts to unicast flows, alternate path routing has received little attention in the Internet community. We describe and evaluate an architecture for alternate path routing for multicast flows. For path installation, we design a receiver-oriented alternate path protocol and prove that it reconfigures multicast trees without introducing loops. For path computation, we propose a scalable local search heuristic that allows receivers to find alternate paths using only partial network information. We …

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring Mar 2000

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring

Faculty Publications

Numerous graphical pre- and post-processors have been developed for numerical modeling. Many of these systems support numerical models that can be used for both steady state and transient simulations. Dealing with transient data can be particularly difficult in such an environment due to the differing time scales and units associated with transient field data and boundary conditions. A data model and a set of functions are presented in this paper as a simple, yet powerful strategy for managing temporal data in a comprehensive modeling environment. The strategy makes it possible to seamlessly integrate multiple types of transient data and convert …

Modeling The Statistical Time And Angle Of Arrival Characteristics Of An Indoor Multipath Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Brian D. Jeffs, A. Lee Swindlehurst, Quentin H. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Most previously proposed statistical models for the indoor multipath channel include only time of arrival characteristics. However, in order to use statistical models in simulating or analyzing the performance of systems employing spatial diversity combining, information about angle of arrival statistics is also required. Ideally, it would be desirable to characterize the full spare-time nature of the channel. In this paper, a system is described that was used to collect simultaneous time and angle of arrival data at 7 GHz. Data processing methods are outlined, and results obtained from data taken in two different buildings are presented. Based on the …

We report on structural, optical, and electrical properties of AlxInyGa1−x−yNGaNheterostructures grown on sapphire and 6H–SiC substrates. Our results demonstrate that incorporation of In reduces the lattice mismatch, Δa, between AlInGaN and GaN, and that an In to Al ratio of close to 1:5 results in nearly strain-free heterostructures. The observed reduction in band gap,ΔEg, determined from photoluminescence measurements, is more than 1.5 times higher than estimated from the linear dependencies of Δa and ΔEg on the In molar fraction. The incorporation of In and resulting changes in the built-in strain in …

The forward-jet cross section in deep inelastic e + p scattering has been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 6.36 pb -1 . The jet cross section is presented as a function of jet transverse energy squared, E(T,jet)/ 2 , and Q 2 in the kinematic ranges 10 -2 < E(T,jet)/ 2 /Q 2 < 10 2 and 2.5 · 10 -4 < x < 8.0 · 10 -2 . Since the perturbative QCD predictions for this cross section are sensitive to the treatment of the log(E(T,jet)/ 2 /Q2) terms, this measurement provides an important test. The measured cross section is compared to the predictions of a next-to-leading order pQCD calculation as well as to various leading-order Monte Carlo models. Whereas the predictions of all models agree with the measured cross section in the region of small E(T,jet/ 2 /Q 2 only one model, which includes a resolved photon component, describes the data over the whole kinematic range. The electronic structure of spinel-type Cu1-xNixRh2S4 (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) and CuRh2Se4 compounds has been studied by means of x-ray photoelectron (SPS) and fluorescent spectroscopy. Cu L3, Ni L3, S L2,3, and Se M2,3 x-ray emission spectra (XES) were measured near thresholds at Beamline 8.0 of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Advanced Light Source. XES measurements of the constituent atoms of these compounds, reduced to the same binding energy scale, are found to be in excellent agreement with XPS valence bands. The calculated XES spectra which include dipole matrix elements show that the partial density of states reproduce experimental spectra …

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part I: Symmetric Constellations, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

In this paper, theoretical upper bounds and computer simulation results on the error performance of multilevel block coded modulations for unequal error protection (UEP) and multistage decoding are presented. It is shown that nonstandard signal set partitionings and multistage decoding provide excellent UEP capabilities beyond those achievable with conventional coded modulation. The coding scheme is designed in such a way that the most important information bits have a lower error rate than other information bits. The large effective error coefficients, normally associated with standard mapping by set partitioning, are reduced by considering nonstandard partitionings of the underlying signal set. The …

Missionary work in Scandinavia began 150 years ago with the arrival of the first LDS missionaries in Denmark on June 14, 1850. In keeping with the observance of the sesquicentennial of the Scandinavian Mission, the Church News presents this article by J. Michael Hunter about two prominent Latter-day Saint artists from earlier days in that part of the world. The art and work of Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831-1921) from Denmark and Danquart Anton Weggeland (1827-1918) from Norway are discussed, focusing on their use of art to tell stories. Images of their art accompany the article.

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov Jan 2000

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov

Faculty Publications

The initial data for black hole collisions are constructed using a conformal-imaging approach and a new adaptive mesh refinement technique, a fully threaded tree (FTT). We developed a second-order accurate approach to the solution of the constraint equations on a non-uniformly refined high-resolution Cartesian mesh including second-order accurate treatment of boundary conditions at the black hole throats. FTT-based mesh refinement reduced memory and computer time requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to a uniform grid and allowed the construction of accurate initial data sets on Cartesian meshes. Test computations show quadratic convergence of the solutions with increasing numerical resolution.
