Optimizing Land Title Assurance Systems, Dale A. Whitman Jan 1973

Optimizing Land Title Assurance Systems, Dale A. Whitman

Faculty Publications

There is little unanimity of viewpoint concerning the complex and controversial subject of real estate settlement costs. The diverse interests and pressure groups seem to agree, however, that the public land title records of most jurisdictions are disarrayed, complicated, and inefficiently organized. This observation has been made with such frequency and conviction that it appears beyond dispute, and it will not be contested here.

Ultimobranchial Thyroid Neoplasms In Bulls. A Syndrome Resembling Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma In Man, Hugh E. Black, Charles C. Capen, David M. Young

Faculty Publications

A syndrome of ultimobranchial thyroid neoplasms which shares many similarities with medullary thyroid carcinoma in man occurs frequently in populations of adult bulls. The results of this investigation demonstrated that ultimobranchial neoplasms were composed of poorly differentiated parafollicular (C—) cells with extensive aggregations of microfilaments, clusters of ribosomes, and prominent Golgi apparatuses. Secretion granules often were interspersed between microfilaments. Other more columnar neoplastic cells assumed a ductal pattern. The prominent stroma contained amyloid fibrils and collagen fibers. By comparison, cells comprising medullary thyroid carcinoma were more differentiated parafollicular cells with well developed cytoplasmic organelles and numerous membrane‐limited secretion granules. Calcitonin …

For the past several years; much emphasis has been placed on open enrollment plans involving bussing that enable black and white students to attend schools together. The Laboratory School of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been involved in such a program since 1968. As the project developed; the potential for very serious problems relating to racial tension and student frustration became evident. To approach these problems and to promote more openness and understanding between students from different communities and differing cultural backgrounds; cross-cultural group counseling sessions were developed. The groups during the past two years have …

The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus Jan 1973

The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus

Faculty Publications

The 1973 Supreme Court decision in Wisconsin v. Yoder reenforced and amplified the Court's earlier holding in Sherbert v. Verner that the free exercise clause of the first amendment requires the state to render substantial deference to religiously motivated behavior in the application of its laws and regulatory schemes. In this article, Mr. Marcus traces the evolving standards of free exercise doctrine and observes that the "balancing test" which has resulted from that evolution requires still further refinement to give religious freedom its full constitutional due. The author then illustrates how the new standards of free exercise might be applied …

Wells And Streams: Relationship At Law, Peter N. Davis Apr 1972

Wells And Streams: Relationship At Law, Peter N. Davis

Faculty Publications

Groundwater constitutes one of the major sources of water for municipalities, irrigators, and rural dwellers. Conflicts between groundwater users are bound to arise from time to time, as is evidenced by a recent Missouri case, Higday v. Nickolaus, discussed elsewhere in this issue.' Such conflicts may increase in frequency in the future as the demand for groundwater increases. Although a majority of cases will involve allocation of groundwater between users of that class of water, many groundwater diversion cases will involve adverse effects on the flow of water in streams. It is –to the latter situation that this article is …
