Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham Jan 2001

Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham

Faculty Publications

Racial segregation in southern public libraries affected millions of African Americans before the Civil Rights movement, and for librarians in the South it created a conflict between professional and regional values. Ultimately, it was the efforts of black activists rather than librarians acting on their ethical impulses that ended library segregation. Librarians were constrained by local racial customs, Jim Crow laws, and, often, by their own racial attitudes. Also, librarians recognized that there were inherent dangers associated with defying the segregationists. There were a few, however, who challenged the racial status quo, and these individuals demonstrated the potential of librarians …

Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble Jan 2000

Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble

Faculty Publications

Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. Agency leaders, community members, and substance abuse prevention advocates all …

Shaping Regional Economies To Sustain Quality Work: The Cooperative Health Care Network, Peter R. Pitegoff

Faculty Publications

This chapter chronicles a creative response to social retrenchment, a saga of strategic deployment of accessible resources and a reshaping of regional economic forces for the benefit of targeted labor markets. While charting its own course, CHCB is part of a mutually supportive network of health care employers and trainers, including successful home care companies in Philadelphia and the South Bronx. Together, these three corporations form the core of the Cooperative Health Care Network and employ over 500 home health aides. About 80 percent of the employees were formerly dependent on public assistance. The network [network] experience and their applicability …

Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey Jan 1999

Service-Learning And Management Education A Call To Action, Paul C. Godfrey

Faculty Publications

The private sector of United States society (private corporations) currently enjoys the moral authority to set the national agenda. Business schools, because they train future managers, can play a vital role in helping the private sector sustain that moral authority. Specifically, I argue that service-learning pedagogies offer management educators a way to incorporate citizenship skills and moral training into the traditional management curriculum. This article describes the concept of service-learning, reviews the current state of service-learning in management, and argues that service-learning can enhance both the technical capability and moral capability of students. Key issues for faculty members involved in …

Preparing The New Law Graduate To Practice Law: A View From The Trenches, Rodney J. Uphoff, James J. Clark, Edward C. Monahan Jan 1997

Preparing The New Law Graduate To Practice Law: A View From The Trenches, Rodney J. Uphoff, James J. Clark, Edward C. Monahan

Faculty Publications

Most legal educators reject the premise that the primary mission of the law school is to train law students to practice law. Rather, most law professors claim that their primary function is to teach students to think like lawyers. To many commentators, however, the academic community's antipractice attitude has spawned an unhealthy dichotomy between theory and practice, a division within the academic community, and a chasm between law schools and the practicing bar. Moreover, this dissonance or gap between law school and practice significantly contributes to the fact that most law graduates are substantially unprepared to function as lawyers when …

Twisted Interests: People In Interest Of S.A.H. And The State Of Open Adoptions In South Dakota, Thomas Simmons Jan 1997

Twisted Interests: People In Interest Of S.A.H. And The State Of Open Adoptions In South Dakota, Thomas Simmons

Faculty Publications

In People in Interest of S.A.H., the South Dakota Supreme Court held that open adoptions, or post-adoption visitation by the natural parents, while not prohibited under South Dakota law when in the best interests of the child, should only be mandated when the trial court finds that it is in the best interests of the child by clear and convincing evidence. The court also instructed trial courts to weigh the needs of the child, the effect on integration with the new family, and the potential effect on the pool of other prospective adoptive parents. This decision, while securing judicial enforcement …

The Lawyer Turns Peacemaker, Richard C. Reuben Aug 1996

The Lawyer Turns Peacemaker, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

No doubt millions of people and businesses have benefited from simpler, less stressful modes of dispute resolution. Moreover, ADR is primed for much greater growth, as witnessed by the breathtaking expansion of court-related programs, the rush of lawyers and nonlawyers alike to mediation training seminars, and the pledge of thousands of businesses and large law firms to consider ADR options. But the child born of necessity is still, at best, teetering between adolescence and adulthood. For all of its potential to reshape the ways problems are solved, it still shows a dark side-coercion, conflicts, competency issues and commercialism -that leaves …

The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

As teacher training institutions have adopted the NAEYC standards for developmentally appropriate practices (hereinafter DAP) (Bredekamp, 1987) and have begun to routinely train pre-service teachers in these principles the need for student teaching experiences which reflect this orientation has become a priority for many teacher educators. However, locating developmentally appropriate placement settings, particularly when large numbers of student teachers are being trained simultaneously, may be difficult in some localities.

The National Probate Court Standards: The Role Of The Courts In Guardianship And Conservatorship Proceedings, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Thomas L. Hafemeister Jan 1994

The National Probate Court Standards: The Role Of The Courts In Guardianship And Conservatorship Proceedings, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Thomas L. Hafemeister

Faculty Publications

In this article, Ms. Hannaford and Professor Hafemeister confront the issue of who will ensure that the needs of the growing elderly population are met. The authors provide a history and overview of guardianship proceedings and also provide, for the first time, a quantitative description of guardianship usage in the United States. The authors assert that guardianships and conservatorships remain effective ways to protect the rights of the incompetent elderly person. Although these remedies create a legal right in the guardian to manage the financial and medical welfare of the elderly client, the authors argue that a lack of procedural …

Scholarly Behaviors Of Physical Education Methods Teacher Educators In Ohio, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

This study focused on the behavior of a proportional, stratified random sample of 40 physical education methods teacher educators (PEMTEs) in the state of Ohio, or more specifically, on the professional implications of their scholarly behaviors. The focal questions addressed were (a) how do PEMTEs meet their responsibility to stay current in their professional areas, and (b) what are the professional implications of these efforts? Four specific behaviors were examined as evidence of scholarly behaviors: (a) reading professional journals, (b) writing for publication, (c) attendance at professional conferences, and (d) active involvement in research. Findings were then contrasted to findings …

Government Regulation Of Religiously Based Social Services: The First Amendment Considerations, Carl H. Esbeck Jan 1992

Government Regulation Of Religiously Based Social Services: The First Amendment Considerations, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

A daunting welter of variables confronts anyone who sets out to systematize the First Amendment's effect on the government's role in regulating social services operated by religious organizations. The task is further complicated because the regulations in question often were promulgated as a consequence of the monitoring that inevitably accompanies government spending on private-sector welfare programs. The most suitable methodology should take into account: 1) the nature of the organizations that are the object of the government's regulation or program of aid; 2) the interrelationship between government and religious organizations that results from the regulation or aid; and 3) the …

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh

Faculty Publications

The study examined expressed reasons for choosing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) by undergraduate students majoring in social work there. Responses of 205 social work majors to a questionnaire found that these students chose UNI primarily because of location; size; cost; the presence of a social work program; to get a good education; to be with their friends; and to continue a family tradition. Other findings indicated that 44% of students had attended other colleges previously; that many students considered other majors before deciding on social work; that 84% of the students had been born in Iowa; that 50% …
