The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim Jan 1995

The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim

Faculty Publications

The discipline of comparative religions has paid little attention to perhaps the most important religious phenomenon of the late twentieth century: interreligious dialogue. Available scholarship on this topic is largely written by and for participants in various dialogues. This scholarship is mainly on the normative issues that concern participants, thus leaving the need for descriptive, analytical scholarship largely unfilled. This essay engages in descriptive analysis of a relatively new twentieth-century dialogue—the Confucian-Christian dialogue—which, nevertheless, has deep historical roots. The essay turns, first, to history, summarizing two different periods of past Confucian-Christian encounter: the period from Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) to the …

'The Savior Of The World' (John 4:42), Craig R. Koester Jan 1990

'The Savior Of The World' (John 4:42), Craig R. Koester

Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4 draws on themes of Roman imperialism and Samaria’s colonial history. The Samaritan townspeople call Jesus “the Savior of the world” (4:42), a title used for Roman emperors from Julius Caesar to Hadrian. They go out to meet Jesus and welcome him to their town, a practice used to welcome emperors and other dignitaries. Using a title of empire-wide significance emphasizes that Jesus now transcends older national divisions. The Samaritan woman speaks as an individual and representative of her people. Her personal history with five husbands parallels her national history of colonization …

First Freedom: Religion And The Bill Of Rights, Carl H. Esbeck Jan 1990

First Freedom: Religion And The Bill Of Rights, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

This volume is a collection of seven papers delivered at a symposium assembled in April 1989 upon the occasion, almost two hundred years hence, of the passage of the Bill of Rights by the First Congress. The unifying theme is stated to be the historical context of both Religion Clauses in the First Amendment, but the authors are driven primarily by Establishment Clause concerns. The Thrust of the essays deal with the originalism advanced during the years of Reagan Administration, and nonpreferentialism comes in for particular criticism, both pejoratively characterized as that "growing clamor".

Coleridgean Polarity And Theological Vision, James S. Cutsinger Jan 1983

Coleridgean Polarity And Theological Vision, James S. Cutsinger

Faculty Publications

This essay concerns two closely related subjects: the religious philosophy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the need for a new vision in Christian theology today. Though it is the second, more ambitious and adventurous topic that deserves the more sensitive treatment, it is rather to Coleridge himself that I have given the greater part of my attention. The reasoning behind this procedure is based upon a fairly simple fact: Coleridge's religious thought is still largely unknown to most people in the philosophical and theological communities. During the past twenty years or so, as many of Coleridge's hitherto unpublished notebooks and …

Mind Reader And Maestro: Models For Understanding Biblical Interpreters, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Certain models of the interpreter’s self-understanding within the interpretive task might be found more in keeping than others with the common life of the church, its nurture and preservation. I will explore several models of the interpreter’s self-understanding of the interpretive task, pair them with the corresponding understanding of the text and evaluate their usefulness for interpreting.
