Responding to the trend of media rights being subjugated through the legal process, this article examines Justice Stewart's suggestion that the media should be treated with extra deference in First Amendment cases. This examination looks at the sufficiency of the press's claim of judicial harshness, whether the press should be treated differently than other speakers, and also compares press freedom in foreign nations.

Second Annual Report Of The Independent Evaluation Of The California Master Plan For Special Education Volume 1, Patricia Craig
Faculty Publications
This two-volume Second Annual Report presents the results of the data collection activities during the first year. The first volume is a nontechnical presentation of the research findings. We have tried to keep it as free of technical jargon as possible and have assumed that readers have some familiarity with the California Master Plan. Volume II is a technical appendix that discusses in detail the methodological aspects of the work. The purpose of this report is to describe concisely, informatively, and objectively the status of special education programs in districts, RLAs, and counties. Most of the information presented is based …

Outlook For Timber From Mississippi’S Private Nonindustrial Forests, Steven H. Bullard, G. H. Weaver
Outlook For Timber From Mississippi’S Private Nonindustrial Forests, Steven H. Bullard, G. H. Weaver
Faculty Publications
Forestry is the dominant land use in Mississippi. Fifty-five percent of the State's total land base is commercial forest and 73 percent of this is held by private nonindustrial owners. The estimated timber harvest value for 1979 was over $550 million. Forest products were second only to soybeans in value in Mississippi's agricultural and forestry crops. The 1979 value is the fourth consecutive record harvest and represents increases in both harvest volume and product prices.
Behavior Of The Southern Pine Beetle On The Bark Of Host Trees During Mass Attack, Jack E. Coster, W.D. Bunt, P.C. Johnson
Behavior Of The Southern Pine Beetle On The Bark Of Host Trees During Mass Attack, Jack E. Coster, W.D. Bunt, P.C. Johnson
Faculty Publications
Twenty-two percent of the southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), that landed on the bark during the 1st 4 days of mass attack in East Texas, eventually entered the tree. Other beetles either flew away (43%), dropped off the host (32%), or were eaten (2%). No significant difference in searching time or distance traveled was found for day of attack or beetle sex. Males spent significantly less total time on the bark than females.

Spatial Distribution Of Flying Southern Pine Beetle (Coleoptera:Scolytidae) And The Predator Thanasunus Dubius (Coleoptera:Cleridae), Jack E. Coster, Paul C. Johnson, Reed J. Reeve
Faculty Publications
Spatial dispersion patterns of flying southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., and the clerid predator Thanasimus dubius (F.) were determined within 3 natural infestations of southern pine beetle (SPB) in eastern Texas using grids of sticky traps. There was significant positive association of the 2 insects throughout the trapping grids, although aerial population densities of the clerid were inversely related to aerial densities of SPB. Aggregation patterns were quantified using the index of patchiness (lP) and the regressions of mean crowding (m) on mean density (m). Both methods showed a highly clumped pattern for both beetle species. SPB density in …

Comment, Rationalizing Liability For Nondisclosure Under 10b-5: Equal Access To Information And United States V. Chiarella,, Juliet P. Kostritsky
Faculty Publications
Chiarella provided the Second Circuit with an opportunity to resolve an important issue on which there previously had been no square holding: whether a person who is not an insider and has no inside knowledge about the company whose securities he is trading nevertheless has a duty to disclose nonpublic material information in his possession about impending stock market events. The court viewed such a person as a "market insider"'" and found a duty to disclose. To evaluate the propriety of imposing liability in this situation, this comment will first trace the development and expansion of liability for nondisclosure under …

Constitutional Limits On State Regulatory And Protectionist Policies, Peter M. Gerhart
Constitutional Limits On State Regulatory And Protectionist Policies, Peter M. Gerhart
Faculty Publications
My theme throughout is this: Although the Supreme Court's sometimes timid review of state regulatory legislation may be explained by its continued allergic reaction to economic due process review, that timidity is often unwarranted because the Constitution does embody several principles that protect the free market from some forms of state intervention.

Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. When d‐amphetamine was administered alone, the overall response rate decreased and the percent errors increased with increasing doses. When a small dose of chlorpromazine, which was ineffective when given alone, was administered in combination with d‐amphetamine, the rate‐decreasing effect was antagonized. The antagonism was selective, however, in that the error‐increasing effect of d‐amprotamine was augmented by chlorpromazine. The nature of the joint effect of the two drugs thus …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On Strained Ratio Behavior In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. When the fixed‐ratio requirement for food presentation was five completions of the chain, d‐amphetamine and cocaine disrupted the behavior. As the dose of each drug was increased, the overall response rate decreased, the overall accuracy was impaired (i.e., percent errors increased), and there was less within‐session error reduction (acquisition). In contrast, when the fixed‐ratio requirement was either 20 or 50 completions of the chain, certain doses of both drugs produced large increases in the overall response rate by eliminating the …
Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson
Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
In each of three components of a multiple schedule, monkeys were required to emit a different sequence of four responses in a predetermined order on four levers. Sequence completions produced food on a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout. One component of the multiple schedule was a repeated‐acquisition task where the four‐response sequence changed each session (learning). The second component of the multiple schedule was also a repeated‐acquisition task, but acquisition was supported through the use of a stimulus‐fading procedure (faded learning). In a third component of the multiple schedule, the sequence of responses remained the same from session …
