Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson Oct 1987

Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

The ecumenical movement in contemporary America should not be surprised to find itself in a quandary of questions regarding the "ministry” of the gospel. From the first decades following the ascension of Jesus until the present the whole complex of emerging questions of ministry have been intimately bound up with society-wide crises of authority. While it is nearly impossible to sort out the myriad questions regarding ministry that have arisen in the American context, one factor in particular has and, if left unchecked, will continue to subvert the ministry of the gospel: a society-wide managerial mode of authority. It has …

A Public Ministry By All The Baptized?, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Any discussion of the ministry of the baptized eventually reaches a point where someone asks, “If all the baptized are ministers, then why and how do we distinguish between the ministry of clergy and laity?” One promising answer begins, “The clergy have a public ministry....” The unspoken half of that answer, seldom said, but powerfully lived out in contemporary capitalistic cultures is, “The laity’s ministry is private.” This response constricts the scope of the gospel and plays into the contemporary gulf between the public and private dimensions of our lives.

Personal Jurisdiction After Asahi: The Other (International) Shoe Drops, R. Lawrence Dessem Oct 1987

Personal Jurisdiction After Asahi: The Other (International) Shoe Drops, R. Lawrence Dessem

Faculty Publications

This articles analyzes the growth and development of the doctrine of personal jurisdiction and the Supreme Court's consideration and application of that doctrine in the recent case of Asahi Metal Industry Co. v. Superior Court. Asahi is significant both because of the nature of the suit and the nationality of the third-party defendant. The Supreme Court for the first time directly addressed the constitutionality of the ‘stream of commerce’ doctrine of personal jurisdiction, a jurisdictional theory that has been employed increasingly in recent years in products liability actions. Asahi also is one of the few cases in which the Court …

As the names ‘Organized Crime Control Act’ and ‘Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations' themselves indicate, Congress' concern was the threat posed by organized crime and racketeering. The OCCA's purpose was ‘to seek the eradication of organized crime in the United States . . . by providing enhanced sanctions and new remedies to deal with the unlawful activities of those engaged in organized crime.’ According to the Senate Report, RICO's purpose was to ‘eliminate . . . the infiltration of organized crime and racketeering into legitimate organizations operating in interstate commerce.’

Initiation Of Terpenoid Synthesis In Osmophores Of Stanhopea Anfracta (Orchidaceae): A Cytochemical Study, Kenneth J. Curry Sep 1987

Initiation Of Terpenoid Synthesis In Osmophores Of Stanhopea Anfracta (Orchidaceae): A Cytochemical Study, Kenneth J. Curry

Faculty Publications

The terpenoid component of the osmophore fragrance in Stanhopea species is composed of isoprene units synthesized via the mevalonic acid pathway. Localization of hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA synthase in the pathway was achieved using a technique which elicits the formation of an electron- dense precipitate of uranyl ferrocyanide at the point where an acetyl group from acetyl CoA is transferred to acetoacetyl CoA, releasing free CoA-SH. Applying this technique to cells of the osmophore of S. anfracta resulted in a precipitate between the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes, in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and, to a lesser extent, on the outer surface …

Osmophores Of Stanhopea (Orchidaeceae), William Louis Stern, Kenneth J. Curry, Alec M. Pridgeon Sep 1987

Osmophores Of Stanhopea (Orchidaeceae), William Louis Stern, Kenneth J. Curry, Alec M. Pridgeon

Faculty Publications

Species of the Neotropical orchid genus Stanhopea produce a fragrance comprising terpenoids and aromatics which attracts euglossine bee pollinators. The secretory tissue, called an osmo- phore, is located in the adaxial region of a sac formed near the proximal portion of the floral lip. This region is easily recognized in Stanhopea oculata and S. wardii because it is papillate. The osmophore in these two species includes all the cells of the papillae and those directly below, that grade into fundamental tissue. Osmophore cells are more densely cytoplasmic than cells in the adjacent tissue. Numerous amyloplasts and mitochondria are seen in …

Giovanni Maria Artusi's L'Artusi Overo Delle Imperfettioni Della Moderna Musica (1600): A Translation And Commentary, Malcolm Litchfield

Faculty Publications

Giovanni Maria Artusi is well known for his conservative role in the debate between advocates of the prima and seconda pratiche. Contemporary authors marvel at Artusi's audacity in criticizing the genius of Monteverdi. Though often viewed as a pedant, Artusi was a significant Italian theorist who understood ancient Greek theory and had innovative ideas for applying this ancient knowledge to modern practice.

L' Artusi, overo Delle imperfettioni deIla moderna musica was written to illuminate and correct errors Artusi found in contemporary scholarship (chiefly in Bottrigari's work) and composition (specifically, certain liberties in Monteverdi's madrigals). Artusi effectively argues for a universal …

The Impact Of The Supreme Court On Trends In Economic Policy Making In The United States Courts Of Appeals, Donald R. Songer Aug 1987

The Impact Of The Supreme Court On Trends In Economic Policy Making In The United States Courts Of Appeals, Donald R. Songer

Faculty Publications

Previous impact research has primarily investigated controversial civil liberties decisions. The present study examines the response of the United States Courts of Appeals to changes in the labor and antitrust policies announced by the Supreme Court between 1950 and 1977. Significant impact was discovered. In each policy area, the decisional trends of the courts of appeals underwent a significant change after each of two policy shifts on the Supreme Court. Changes in the decisional trends of the courts of appeal were in the predicted direction even after controls were introduced for judges' party and holdover effects.

Aurealcaulis Crossii Gen. Et Sp. Nov., An Arborescent, Osmundaceous Trunk From The Fort Union Formation (Paleocene), Wyoming, William D. Tidwell, Lee R. Parker

Faculty Publications

Aurealcaulis crossii gen. et sp. nov., is based on permineralized trunks of an osmundaceous tree fern from the Paleocene Fort Union Formation from near Bitter Creek Station of southwestern Wyoming. This new species is characterized by centripetal (exarch) development of its xylem strands which form part of the leaf traces. Most of the leaf traces depart the stele as two segments that fuse into a single C-shaped petiole vascular strand outside of the outer cortex. Stipular expansions of the petiole bases of this species lack sclerenchyma, and roots arise from the lateral edges of leaf traces in the inner cortex. …

Effect Of Phosphate On The Kinetics And Specificity Of Glycation Of Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Carolyn I. Neglia-Fisher, Daniel G. Dyer, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes May 1987

Effect Of Phosphate On The Kinetics And Specificity Of Glycation Of Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Carolyn I. Neglia-Fisher, Daniel G. Dyer, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

The glycation (nonenzymatic glycosylation) of several proteins was studied in various buffiner os rder to assess the effects of buffering ions on the kinetics and specificity of glycation of protein. Incubation of RNase with glucose in phosphate buffer resulted in inactivation of the enzyme because of preferential modification of lysine residues ino r near the activsei te. In contrast, in the cationic buffers, 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid and 3-(N-tris(hydroxymethyl)rnethylamino)- 2-hydroxypropanesulfonica cid, the kineticso f glycation of RNase were decreased 2- to 3-fold, there was a decrease in glycation of active site versus peripheral lysines, and the enzyme was resistant to inactivation by …

Basic Mathematical Programming Applications To Weed Control In Forestry, Steven H. Bullard, R. H. Richardson, Thomas J. Straka

Faculty Publications

Many studies document herbicide performance for Heed and hardwood control in forestry. Few studies, hoHever, attemp t to develop optima l application strategies. Stand-level optindzation is presently limited due to lack of groHth and yield information. Forest-level optimization is possible, however, and has great potential to aid in planning forestry weed control prog rams.

State Cost-Share Programs For Nonindustrial Private Forestry Investments, Thomas J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1987

State Cost-Share Programs For Nonindustrial Private Forestry Investments, Thomas J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Fourteen states provide cost-share assistance for approved forestry practices. Host programs are intended to increase forest productivity. Funding is typically from state appropriations and/or taxes on primary forest products. Cost-share rates range up to 80 percent, but most programs are at the 50 percent level. All programs require an approved forest management program. Eligible practices are generally reforestation, site preparation, and timber stand improvement.

Costs And Cost Trends For Forestry Practices In The South, William F. Watson, Thomas J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Cost estimates of practicing forestry in the South during 1986 and cost changes during the 1952-1986 period are presented in this report. Albert C. Worrell reported the original cost study in Forest Farmer in May 1953. His work was updated by James G. Yoho and Robert B. Fish in the November 1961 issue of Forest Farmer. Other revisions include James G. Yoho, George F . Dutrow, and James Moak (Forest Farmer, 1971); James Moak and Jim Kucera (Forest Farmer, 1975); James Moak, James Kucera, and W.F.
