Theory, Science, And 'Micro-Macro' Bridges In Structural Social Psychology, Barry N. Markovsky

Social psychology stands to benefit from multilevel theories that link it to both lower and higher levels of analysis. Making the link, however, requires a level of theoretical rigor heretofore relatively uncommon in the social sciences. After refuting several common objections to this brand of theorizing, I offer a rationale and a set of criteria for multilevel theory construction.

We present a study of tunable high-order sum and difference frequency mixing in the 7-70 eV range, in xenon, argon and neon. We mix the light from a terawatt, sub-picosecond titanium-sapphire laser and that from a tunable optical parametric generator. The radiation generated through mixing processes involves absorption or emission of one or two photons from the weak tunable source. The relative strengths of the sum and difference frequency processes depend strongly on the wavelength range of the generated radiation. The sum frequency processes are stronger at low photon energies in xenon, whereas the difference frequency processes dominated at high …

The University As An Academy Of Scholars, Mark Grey
The University As An Academy Of Scholars, Mark Grey

Goodman's conception of the academy. The concept of the university as an academy of scholars is one that reaches back to the medieval period. Goodman (1962) captures the essence of such an academy in the following seven characteristics: (1) teaching and learning are a personal relation, being necessary for both the student and the teacher; (2) to their students, teachers are veterans who have demonstrated the way of learning in the world and prove it can be done; (3) the guild, whether of students or masters, is the home and community of its members; (4) the academy is an international …
Learning With And About Technology, Ronald Abraham
Learning With And About Technology, Ronald Abraham

Since the invention of printing, technology has offered great promise for increasing access and enhancing the effectiveness of education while reducing, or holding the line on, educational costs (Dressel and Marcus, 1982). What is most remarkable, however, is that all of the significant changes in educational technology (beyond print materials) have occurred during the 20th century.
Learning For A Global Community, Geofrey Mills
Learning For A Global Community, Geofrey Mills
Faculty Publications
Background materials and recommendations for expanding the international dimension of higher education are found in the Carnegie Council's study reported by Burn (1980). A more recent statement of the imperative of learning for a global community is found in Pickert (1992, p. iii):
"With the world integrated by economics, communications, transportation, and politics, Americans increasingly see that they live and work in a global marketplace of goods, services, and ideas. Policy makers and the public want educational programs to reflect the international ties that bind people as they bind nations. Colleges and universities must produce graduates who know other cultural …
Fostering A Culture Of Teaching, Linda Walsh
Fostering A Culture Of Teaching, Linda Walsh
Faculty Publications
Teaching always occurs in some cultural context, which may be more or less supportive of teaching. Arrowsmith (1967, p. 58) observed:
"What matters then is the kind of context that we create for teaching and the largeness of the demands made upon the teacher ... At present the universities are as uncongenial to teaching as the Mojave Desert to a clutch of Druid priests. If you want to restore a Druid priesthood, you cannot do it by offering prizes for Druid-of- the-year. If you want Druids, you must grow forests. There is no other way of setting about it."

Distance Education, Linda Walsh
Distance Education, Linda Walsh
Faculty Publications
Verduin and Clark (1991, p. 8) define distance education as "any formal approach to learning in which a majority of the instruction occurs while educator and learner are at a distance from one another." In all varieties of distance education programs, some form(s) of technology must be used for linking students with instruction. The kind and sophistication of technology used by distance education institutions varies greatly. Arranged by increasing levels of complexity, cost, and potential effectiveness (which depends on factors such as learner characteristics, learning objectives, and instructional design features), the primary means used to deliver distance education include the …

The demographic characteristics of college students have changed significantly on campuses across the nation (Astin, 1985). In contrast to homogeneous backgrounds and interests, we now find several student subcultures on most every campus (Altbach, 1993). While the student perspective regarding learning has continued as a strong theme in the literature (e.g., Gibbs, 1981a; Ramsden, 1992), student diversity in higher education has stimulated new research on the development of knowledge, skills, and values during the college years.

Photoproduction events which have two or more jets have been studied in the Wγp range 135 GeV < Wγp < 280 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A class of events is observed with little hadronic activity between the jets. The jets are separated by pseudorapidity intervals (Δη) of up to four units and have transverse energies greater than 6 GeV. A gap is defined as the absence between the jets of particles with transverse energy greater than 300 MeV. The fraction of events containing a gap is measured as a function of Δη. It decreases exponentially as expected for processes in which colour is exchanged between the jets, up to a value of Δη ∼ 3, then reaches a constant value of about 0.1. The excess above the exponential fall-off can be interpreted as evidence for hard diffractive scattering via a strongly interacting colour singlet object.

The concept of automated highway system (AHS) was motivated primarily by its potential for large capacity and safety gains without requiring significant right-of-way acquisition. However, highway automation involves a multitude of design options as well as systems issues. Compounded by the crucial dimension of evolving the current highway system towards the mature AH& there exist a large number of possible evolutionary paths to AHS. Perhaps due to the immense complexity, little attention has been paid to the evolution dimension.Particularly important and difficult in defining a deployment sequence is the very first step,i.e. the first user service involving fully automated (hands-off …

Stage Definition For Ahs Deployment And An Ahs Evolutionary Scenario, H.-S. Jacob Tsao
Faculty Publications
The concept of automated highway systems (AHS) as a means to solve the fast-worsening highway congestion problem has received renewed attention recently. Pros and cons of various mature AHS have been a subject of intense study. However, such discussions are nothing but intellectual exercises unless the issue of how to evolve the current highway systems towards these mature AHS can be resolved. There exist a large number of different possible mature AHS. The additional dimension of evolution leads to an even larger number of possible evolutionary scenarios. This paper proposes an approach to defining evolutionary scenarios and illustrates it with …
Variable-Complexity Trellis Decoding Of Binary Convolutional Codes, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson
Variable-Complexity Trellis Decoding Of Binary Convolutional Codes, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson
Faculty Publications
Considers trellis decoding of convolutional codes with selectable effort, as measured by decoder complexity. Decoding is described for single parent codes with a variety of complexities, with performance "near" that of the optimal fixed receiver complexity coding system. Effective free distance is examined. Criteria are proposed for ranking parent codes, and some codes found to be best according to the criteria are tabulated, Several codes with effective free distance better than the best code of comparable complexity were found. Asymptotic (high SNR) performance analysis and error propagation are discussed. Simulation results are also provided.
Social Construction And White Attitudes Toward Equal Opportunity And Multiculturalism, Michael W. Link, Robert W. Oldendick
Social Construction And White Attitudes Toward Equal Opportunity And Multiculturalism, Michael W. Link, Robert W. Oldendick
Faculty Publications
As the United States moves from being a predominantly biracial to a multiracial society, racial attitudes continue to become more diverse and more complex. Scholars need to address these changes not only in terms of black and white Americans, but also how these changes involve and affect other racial groups, particularly Asian and Hispanic Americans. This inquiry looks at some of these complexities by examining how social construction differentials in the minds of white Americans affect their attitudes toward the issues of equal opportunity and multiculturalism. The analysis shows that differences in the cognitive images whites hold of minority groups …

Partnerships As A Potential Means Of Increasing The Production Of Hardwood Timber On Nipf Lands In North Mississippi, John J. Curry, Steven H. Bullard, G. Wayne Kelly
Faculty Publications
North Mississippi has significant hardwood timber resources. Hardwood timber in the region has traditionally been an important source of raw material for furniture and other wood-based industries. In recent years, however, demand has greatly increased for hardwood timber for use in the pulp and paper industry, resulting in increased harvest levels of pole-sized and small sawtimber-sized hardwoods in the region. Increased harvests of hardwood timber have given rise to concerns about the longerterm availability of hardwoods that are large enough in size to be efficiently converted into lumber and other solid wood products. Futures options, futures contracts, leases, and limited …

Concerns are being raised in both professional literature as well as in the popular press regarding certain aspects of the literature-based movement. Here we report on findings from a longitudinal study of a group of first -grade teachers who have been attempting (with varying degrees of success)to introduce literature-based teaching strategies into their classrooms. We inspect the experiences of these teachers in relation to four areas of concern that have been raised regarding literature-based teaching: 1. skills instruction; 2.guided reading strategies; 3. literature selection;and 4. thematic teaching (or curriculum integration). We describe classroom practices and the 9 problems and possibilities …

In this paper, three-level block coded 8-PSK modulations, suitable for satellite broadcasting of digital TV signals, are presented. A design principle to achieve unequal error protection is introduced. The coding scheme is designed in such a way that the information bits carrying the basic definition TV signal have a lower error rate than the high definition information bits. The large error coefficients, formally associated with standard mapping by set partitioning, are reduced by considering a nonstandard partition of an 8-PSK signal set. The bits-to-signal mapping induced by this partition allows the use of suboptimal low-complexity soft-decision decoding of binary block …

Theological Librarianship: Toward A Profile Of A Profession, Andrew J. Keck, Rashelle S. Karp

Theology touches almost everyone at one time or another. The librarians who maintain, preserve, and disseminate theological information are critical to the perpetuation of theological study and enlightenment. However, the literature of librarianship is strangely silent on the topic of theological librarianship and especially on issues that are unique to theological librarians--those who work with theologically or religiously focused collections or libraries that support the education and training of people preparing for the ministry.

Infection And Fungal Development Of Tubakia Dryina On Sweet Gum (Liquidambar Styraciflua), Josephine Taylor, Shane Clark
Faculty Publications
Infection and fungal development of Tubakia dryina were investigated on leaves of sweet gum using a combination of microscopic techniques. Conidia of T. dryina adhered to the leaf surface and formed septate germ tubes. Germ tubes terminated in small appressoria that formed directly over epidermal cells. Intra- and intercellular hyphae ramified extensively throughout the leaf tissue. Host cells associated with the infection site became necrotic and collapsed, resulting in macroscopic disease symptoms.
Statutory Interpretation In Securities Jurisprudence: A Failure Of Textualism, Ediberto Román
Statutory Interpretation In Securities Jurisprudence: A Failure Of Textualism, Ediberto Román
Faculty Publications
This Article critiques the development of textualist theory in securities jurisprudence and analyzes the Central Bank decision as an example of the defects inherent in the application of a textualist approach. It demonstrates how the development of textualist securities jurisprudence stemmed from decisions that casually rejected precedent and mischaracterized existing law, thereby resulting in a distortion of the legislature’s intent. An analysis of the Securities Exchange Act demonstrates how the Central Bank Court’s approach towards statutory interpretation led to its failure to analyze other relevant Exchange Act provisions, including the most relevant provision – Section 20(a). The first section of …

Higher-Order Associative Processing In Hermissenda Suggests Multiple Sites Of Neuronal Modulation., Ronald F. Rogers, Louis D. Matzel

Two important features of modern accounts of associative learning are (1) the capacity for contextual stimuli to serve as a signal for an unconditioned stimulus (US) and (2) the capacity for a previously conditioned (excitatory) stimulus to "block" learning about a redundant stimulus when both stimuli serve as a signal for the same US. Here, we examined the process of blocking, thought by some to reflect a cognitive aspect of classical conditioning, and its underlying mechanisms in the marine mollusc Hermissenda. In two behavioral experiments, a context defined by chemosensory stimuli was made excitatory by presenting unsignalled USs (rotation) in …
