SoxR is a [2Fe-2S] transcription factor triggered by oxidative stress and activated in vitro by one-electron oxidation or assembly of the iron- sulfur centers. To distinguish which mechanism operates in cells, we studied constitutively active SoxR (SoxR(c)) proteins. Three SoxR(c) proteins contained [2Fe-2S] centers required for in vitro transcription and, like wild-type SoxR, were inactivated by chemical reduction. However, in vivo spectroscopy showed that even without oxidative stress, the three SoxR(c) proteins failed to accumulate with reduced [2Fe-2S] (≤4% compared to ≤40% for wild type). One SoxR(c) protein had a redox potential 65 mV lower than wild type, consistent with …

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 1997

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojection of the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of ‘konus densities’ that are invisible in projection. We develop a deprojection method based on linear regularization that can explore the range of luminosity densities that are statistically consistent with an observed surface brightness distribution. The luminosity density is poorly constrained at modest inclinations (i ≿ 30°), even in the limit …

The Ethics Of Judicial Decision-Making Regarding Custody Of Minor Children: Looking At The Best Interests Of The Child" And The "Primary Caretaker" Standards As Utility Rules, Kathryn Mercer Jan 1997

The Ethics Of Judicial Decision-Making Regarding Custody Of Minor Children: Looking At The Best Interests Of The Child" And The "Primary Caretaker" Standards As Utility Rules, Kathryn Mercer

Faculty Publications

This article will examine how a judge's ethical framework can influence the outcome of a custody award, even where the same "child-centered" standard is ostensibly being used. This article uses three cases from the Supreme Court of Nebraska to demonstrate that the "best interests of the child" standard can be used: 1) to award a parent custody because parents have near absolute rights (an example of rule deontology); 2) to deny a parent custody because the par ent is unfit (an example of rule utilitarianism); or 3) to deny a parent custody because the child's life needs stability (an example …

Multilevel Block Coded Modulation With Unequal Error Protection, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

Multilevel block coded modulation (BCM) schemes with unequal error protection (UEP) are investigated. These schemes are based on unconventional set partitions that greatly reduce the error coefficients associated with multi-stage decoding of conventional BCM, at the expense of smaller intra-set distances.

Conidial Germination And Infection By Diplocarpon Rosae On Susceptible And Resistant Rose Species, Robert J. Wiggers, J. G. West, Josephine Taylor

Faculty Publications

Conidial germination and infection by Dipplocarpon rosae, the causal organism of rose blackspot, were examined on two resistant species of roses, Rosa roxburghii and R. wichuraiana and two susceptible hybrid tea roses (R. hybrid cv. Chicago Peace and Garden Party). Fungal conidia germinated and gave rise to subcuticular mycelium that formed haustoria within epidermal cells of all four roses tested. On the resistant rose species, epidermal cells associated with the infection site became necrotic, indicating that a hypersensitive response is involved in conferring their resistance D. rosae.

Tyrannous Lex, Thomas E. Baker Jan 1997

Tyrannous Lex, Thomas E. Baker

Faculty Publications

Professor Baker presents a fundamentally unique question. Including all of the legal opinions, statutes and administrative rules, how much law do we have? Is there way to calculate a “Gross Legal Product” for the United States and what effect does this “GLP” have on the U.S. economy? What about all of the secondary legal sources? What do they add, if anything, to our ability to understand all of the law that is constantly being produced? All these and more are the subject of Professor Baker’s article.

State Of Maine Property Tax Reform, Kim Bridgham, Annie Lunt Jan 1997

State Of Maine Property Tax Reform, Kim Bridgham, Annie Lunt

Faculty Publications

In January, 1997, Governor Angus King established a 10 person committee representing a broad cross-section of citizens interest to investigate what changes are needed in the Maine tax system to address the issue of high property taxes. The Governor's Select Committee on Property Tax Reform (the "Committee") was charged with examining how to reduce the burden of the property tax. The Committee was asked to recommend steps the State and local governments in Maine could take to reduce the burden of the property tax as well as changes in the way that the property tax is administered and collected to …

The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker's Role In The Southern Pine Ecosystem, Population Trends And Relationships With Southern Pine Beetles, Richard N. Conner, D. Craig Rudolph, Daniel Saenz, Robert N. Coulson Jan 1997

The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker's Role In The Southern Pine Ecosystem, Population Trends And Relationships With Southern Pine Beetles, Richard N. Conner, D. Craig Rudolph, Daniel Saenz, Robert N. Coulson

Faculty Publications

This study reviews the overall ecological role of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis)in the southern pine ecosystem. It is the only North American woodpecker species to become well adapted to a landscape that was relatively devoid of the substrate typically used by woodpeckers for cavity excavation (i.e. snags and decayed, living hardwoods). Its adaptation to use living pines for cavity excavation has expanded the use of this fire-disclimax ecosystem for numerous other cavity-using species. As such, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker represents an important keystone species of fire-disclimax pine ecosystems of the South. Historically, populations of this woodpecker and other cavity dependent …

Species Using Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Cavities In Eastern Texas, Richard N. Conner, D. Craig Rudolph, Daniel Saenz, Richard R. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

Because of its ability to excavate cavities in living pines, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is a keystone species in the fire-disclimax, pine ecosystems of the southeastern United States. Many species representing multiple taxonomic classes are dependent on this woodpecker species for the cavities it creates. We examined the occupants of Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavities during spring, late summer, and winter. Cavities enlarged by other species of woodpeckers and unenlarged cavities were examined in two habitat conditions: loblolly (Pinus taeda) -shortleaf (P. echinata) pine and longleaf pine (P. palustris) habitats. Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavities provided cavity habitat for seven species of birds, …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Net Productivity Of Coastal Waters: Implications For Carbon Budgets And Hypoxia, D Justic, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

General circulation models predict that freshwater discharge from the Mississippi River (USA) to the coastal ocean would increase 20 % if atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles. Here we use a coupled physical-biological 2-box model to investigate the potential impacts of increased freshwater and nutrient inputs on the production and decay of organic matter in the coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Model results for a doubled CO2 climate indicate that the annual net productivity of the upper water column (NP, 0 to 10 m) is likely to increase by 65 g C m(-2) yr(-1), relative to a 1985-1992 average …
