Improved Mortality Among U.S. Blacks, 1968-1978: The Role Of Antiracist Struggle, R. Cooper, M. Steinhauer, A. Schatzkin, W. Miller

Faculty Publications

A marked improvement in health status for black adults took place over the last decade in the United States. Life expectancy for black men increased 4.6 years between 1968 and 1978, while for black women the increase was 5.7 years. Death rates for the age group 35-74 decreased approximately 25 percent for blacks over the same period. The largest contribution to this improvement was made by cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease and stroke). Although similar improvement was observed in the white population, on both a percentage and absolute basis the change was greater for blacks. For the first time in …

The First Amendment And The Free Press: A Comment On Some New Trends And Some Old Theories, William W. Van Alstyne

Faculty Publications

Responding to the trend of media rights being subjugated through the legal process, this article examines Justice Stewart's suggestion that the media should be treated with extra deference in First Amendment cases. This examination looks at the sufficiency of the press's claim of judicial harshness, whether the press should be treated differently than other speakers, and also compares press freedom in foreign nations.

Second Annual Report Of The Independent Evaluation Of The California Master Plan For Special Education Volume 1, Patricia Craig

Faculty Publications

This two-volume Second Annual Report presents the results of the data collection activities during the first year. The first volume is a nontechnical presentation of the research findings. We have tried to keep it as free of technical jargon as possible and have assumed that readers have some familiarity with the California Master Plan. Volume II is a technical appendix that discusses in detail the methodological aspects of the work. The purpose of this report is to describe concisely, informatively, and objectively the status of special education programs in districts, RLAs, and counties. Most of the information presented is based …

Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1980

Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. When d‐amphetamine was administered alone, the overall response rate decreased and the percent errors increased with increasing doses. When a small dose of chlorpromazine, which was ineffective when given alone, was administered in combination with d‐amphetamine, the rate‐decreasing effect was antagonized. The antagonism was selective, however, in that the error‐increasing effect of d‐amprotamine was augmented by chlorpromazine. The nature of the joint effect of the two drugs thus …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1980

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

In each of three components of a multiple schedule, monkeys were required to emit a different sequence of four responses in a predetermined order on four levers. Sequence completions produced food on a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout. One component of the multiple schedule was a repeated‐acquisition task where the four‐response sequence changed each session (learning). The second component of the multiple schedule was also a repeated‐acquisition task, but acquisition was supported through the use of a stimulus‐fading procedure (faded learning). In a third component of the multiple schedule, the sequence of responses remained the same from session …

A Methodology For Nurse Staffing, Bruce M. Meglino Apr 1979

A Methodology For Nurse Staffing, Bruce M. Meglino

Faculty Publications

Increases in both staff salaries and in the number of personnel per patient have been prime factors in the rapid rise of hospital costs. This is particularly true in the nursing area, which is responsible for the greatest portion of these costs. Limited information has been available to aid hospital managers in the efficient utilization of the nursing staff. This article presents guidelines for determining patient load and a systematic procedure for allocating nursing personnel.

An Experimental Analysis Of The Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On The Acquisition And Performance Of Response Chains In Monkeys, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher Jan 1979

An Experimental Analysis Of The Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On The Acquisition And Performance Of Response Chains In Monkeys, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher

Faculty Publications

In one component of a multiple schedule of food presentation, monkeys acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four geometric forms (learning). In the other component, the four‐response chain was the same each session (performance). Both d‐amphetamine and cocaine, at the higher doses, disrupted the behavior in the learning component; the overall response rate decreased, the overall accuracy was impaired (i.e., percent errors increased), and there was less within‐session error reduction. The performance component was generally less sensitive than the learning component to the disruptive effects of both drugs on …

Effects Of Methamphetamine And Scopolamine On Variability Of Response Location, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson, John R. Thomas Jan 1979

Effects Of Methamphetamine And Scopolamine On Variability Of Response Location, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson, John R. Thomas

Faculty Publications

Methamphetamine and scopolamine were studied in monkeys responding under a multiple fixed‐ratio fixed‐interval schedule of reinforcement. A response on any one of six levers could satisfy the schedule requirements. Variability of response location was evaluated in terms of switches, where a switch was defined as a response on one lever followed by a response on a different lever. Under baseline conditions the fixed‐ratio schedule generated a high rate of responding and a low level of variability, while the fixed‐interval schedule generated a low rate of responding and a high level of variability. Both methamphetamine (0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg) and scopolamine …

Speech And Speech - Obscenity And Obscenity: An Exercise In The Interpretation Of Constitutional Language, Frederick Schauer Jan 1979

Speech And Speech - Obscenity And Obscenity: An Exercise In The Interpretation Of Constitutional Language, Frederick Schauer

Faculty Publications

Commentators have criticized the Supreme Court's use of the "two-level" theory of speech to place obscenity beyond the pale of the first amendment. They charge the Court with shirking the task of balancing first amendment values and the states' interests in regulating obscene material. Professor Schauer meets this criticism by examining the meaning of the word "speech" in the context of the purposes of the first amendment and the Constitution as a whole. He concludes that "speech"does not include a category.of obscenity'that performs the function of a surrogate sexual act and is lacking in communicative content. The Court's treatment of …

Locus Of Control, Knowledge Of Ethics, And Perceived Ethicality As Influenced By An Authority Figure, F. Matthew Mihelic, William G. Connolly

Faculty Publications

The present study investigated the relationship between a subject's locus of control, knowledge of psychological ethical research principles, and perceived ethicality of a psychological research proposal as influenced by an authority figure. Subjects were asked to judge the ethicality of a research proposal, which half were led to believe had been previously deemed unethical by an authority figure. No mention was made of the authority figure's viewpoint to the other subjects. The major finding was that the variability in ratings in ethicality of the research proposal tended to diminished from the no mention to the rejection manipulation in those of …

Studies Of Handicapped Students: Volume Ii: Teacher Identification Of Handicapped Pupils (Ages 6-11) Compared With Identification Using Other Indicators, Patricia Craig, David Kaskowitz, Mary Malgoire

Faculty Publications

Presented is a two-volume study of the characteristics of students identified as handicapped from educational, clinical, and psychological evaluations. The first volume describes an analysis (based on surveys collected by the National Center for Health Statistics) of the affects on identification of 14,185 6- to 17-year old students of family income, race, population size of place of residence, and geographic location. Among six primary findings reviewed are that all three types of teacher-identified handicaps (physical, mental, and speech) were significantly concentrated in the low income elementary school population, and that teachers identified both mental and speech handicaps at a significantly …
