Math Student Teachers: How Well Prepared Are They?, Richard G. Stahlhut Jan 1992

Math Student Teachers: How Well Prepared Are They?, Richard G. Stahlhut

Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to find out how well mathematics majors at the University of Northern Iowa were prepared in the foundations of effective teaching practices and how well they performed during the student teaching experience. Data were gathered from mathematics student teachers (N=22) who were observed; interviewed; and asked to keep daily journals. Results suggest that mathematics teacher education students: (1) be required to create practical problems for pupils for every mathematics course in grades 7-12; (2) be required to take a course that deals with writing across the curriculum so they can better incorporate English into their classroom …

Parameter Sensitivity And Optimization Predictions Of A Hydrogen/Oxygen Alkaline Fuel Cell Model, Michael C. Kimble, Ralph E. White Jan 1992

Parameter Sensitivity And Optimization Predictions Of A Hydrogen/Oxygen Alkaline Fuel Cell Model, Michael C. Kimble, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is used to predict parameter sensitivities and optimal design parameters for a hydrogen/oxygen alkaline fuel cell. A sensitivity analysis of the various transport and electrode kinetic parameters indicates which parameters have the most influence on the predicted current density and over which range of potentials these parameters affect the fuel-cell performance the most. This information can be used to decide which parameters should be optimized or determined more accurately through further modeling or experimental studies. The effect of various design parameters on the limiting current density are investigated to determine if optimal values exist for the parameters. …

Reduction Of Chromium (Vi) When Solar Selective Black Chromium Is Deposited In The Presence Of Organic Additive, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White, D. Slavkov, Z. Koneska

Faculty Publications

Electrochemical dc methods were used to study the reduction of chromium (VI) in the presence of organic additives. It is shown that F–, thiourea, and citric acid are essential to enable deposition of black chrome from concentrated chromic acid solutions. A new formulation of the plating bath is defined. The optimum operating conditions under which spectrally selective surface of black chrome is deposited have been determined.

Time-Courses In The Retention Of Food Material In The Bivalves Potamocorbula Amurensis And Macoma Balthica: Significance To The Absorption Of Carbon And Chromium, Alan W. Decho, Samuel N. Luoma

Faculty Publications

Time courses for ingestion, retention and release via feces of microbial food was investigated using 2 bivalves with different feeding strategies, Potamocorbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time periods. Inert 51Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the digestion of bacterial cells by P. amurensis but more efficient in …

A Note On Repeated-Root Cyclic Codes, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Faculty Publications

In papers by Castagnoli et al. and Van Lint, cyclic codes with repeated roots are analyzed. Both papers fail to acknowledge a previous work by Chen, dating back to 1969, which includes an analysis of even, length binary cyclic codes. Results from Chen’s study are presented.

Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander Aug 1991

Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander

Faculty Publications

We present theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation in a rare-gas medium. The experimental results obtained at Saclay with a 1064 nm Nd-YAG laser in the 1013 W cm-2 intensity range are summarized. The harmonic emission strengths first decrease rather steeply for the first orders, then form a long plateau up to the 21st harmonic in xenon, or up to the 33rd harmonic in argon, before decreasing again rather abruptly. The theoretical description of these experiments consists first in the calculation of the photoemission spectra emitted by a single atom. The spectra are obtained by numerically integrating a time-dependent Schrôdinger …

Transport Properties Of An Interacting Lattice Gas Model In A Charge Density Gradient By Monte Carlo Simulation, Ras B. Pandey, Songping Gao Apr 1991

Transport Properties Of An Interacting Lattice Gas Model In A Charge Density Gradient By Monte Carlo Simulation, Ras B. Pandey, Songping Gao

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional lattice is considered with a linear charge-density gradient produced by a charge source at one end and a sink at the opposite end. A fraction p of the lattice sites are occupied by mobile particles that interact only with neighboring particles and empty sites (the substrate) and carry charges from source to sink; the charge neutrality of the whole lattice is maintained. The root-mean-square (rms) displacement of the particles (i.e., the tracers) and their effective conductivity for the charge transport are studied as a function of temperature and concentration p. The rms displacement shows a crossover from diffusion …

Land And Resource Management On Typic Quartzipsamments, David Kulhavy, W. D. Tracey, W. G. Ross

Faculty Publications

Survival and growth of seven species/treatment combinations were tested on Tonkawa fine sand (thermic, coated Typic Quartzipsamment) in Nacogdoches County, Texas. In January 1983, seedlings were hand-planted on an intensively prepared clearcut site on the Tonkawa soil series in northern Nacogdoches County. Tonkawa sands serve as recharge zones for the Carrizo aquifer, a major source of clean groundwater for much of East Texas. Intensive management practices on this sensitive site created severe site conditions, providing incentive for the study. Species/ treatment combinations were: untreated loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) pine (LOB/CON); Terra-SorbTM -treated loblolly (LOB/Tm);olin clay slurry-treated loblolly (LOB/CLA); untreated slash …

The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman Jan 1991

The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman

Faculty Publications

While the objective of expanding the Oregon Medicaid program is commendable, the means adopted by the Oregon legislature to control the costs of the expansion are problematic. This paper examines the legislature's approach from a legal perspective. The first part of the paper determines whether it is consistent with federal and state law governing the Medicaid program. Oregon is seeking waivers from any conflicting federal requirements, and since there do not appear to be any constitutional impediments, the key question is whether the waivers should be granted as a matter of sound public policy. The second and third parts of …

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney Jan 1991

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

A simple procedure that yields highly purified intact chloroplasts from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is described. This procedure involves breakage of cell wall-deficient cells by passing them through a narrow bore syringe needle. The intact chloroplasts are then purified from the crude homogenate by differential centrifugation and Percoll gradient centrifugation. This procedure generates relatively high yields of chloroplasts capable of CO2 fixation. These chloroplasts were characterized by electron microscopy, marker enzyme analysis, and ferricyanide exclusion. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that these chloroplasts retain their pyrenoids and eyespots. Scanning electron microscopy confirms that the characteristic cup shape of C. reinhardtii chloroplasts persists in …

Missing Evidence, Dale A. Nance Jan 1991

Missing Evidence, Dale A. Nance

Faculty Publications

Given the nature of my enterprise, I resist stating a specific thesis. Nevertheless, for the reader who wants an organizing or motivating principle, I offer the following two recurrent themes. First, I want to examine the relationship of traditional admissibility rules to the problem of missing evidence and to other forms of juridical response to that problem. The reason for this interest will be explained in the next section. Second, I want to investigate, as we proceed, the extent to which the regulation of proof, evidence law broadly conceived, is instrumentally related to accuracy or truth seeking, and the extent …
