Learning With And About Technology, Ronald Abraham Mar 1996

Learning With And About Technology, Ronald Abraham

Faculty Publications

Since the invention of printing, technology has offered great promise for increasing access and enhancing the effectiveness of education while reducing, or holding the line on, educational costs (Dressel and Marcus, 1982). What is most remarkable, however, is that all of the significant changes in educational technology (beyond print materials) have occurred during the 20th century.

Distance Education, Linda Walsh Mar 1996

Distance Education, Linda Walsh

Faculty Publications

Verduin and Clark (1991, p. 8) define distance education as "any formal approach to learning in which a majority of the instruction occurs while educator and learner are at a distance from one another." In all varieties of distance education programs, some form(s) of technology must be used for linking students with instruction. The kind and sophistication of technology used by distance education institutions varies greatly. Arranged by increasing levels of complexity, cost, and potential effectiveness (which depends on factors such as learner characteristics, learning objectives, and instructional design features), the primary means used to deliver distance education include the …

Social Construction And White Attitudes Toward Equal Opportunity And Multiculturalism, Michael W. Link, Robert W. Oldendick Feb 1996

Social Construction And White Attitudes Toward Equal Opportunity And Multiculturalism, Michael W. Link, Robert W. Oldendick

Faculty Publications

As the United States moves from being a predominantly biracial to a multiracial society, racial attitudes continue to become more diverse and more complex. Scholars need to address these changes not only in terms of black and white Americans, but also how these changes involve and affect other racial groups, particularly Asian and Hispanic Americans. This inquiry looks at some of these complexities by examining how social construction differentials in the minds of white Americans affect their attitudes toward the issues of equal opportunity and multiculturalism. The analysis shows that differences in the cognitive images whites hold of minority groups …

Literature-Based Reading Instruction: Problems, Possibilities & Polemics In The Struggle To Change, James V. Hoffman, Sarah J. Mccarthy, Judy A. Abbott, Debra Bayles, Bonnie Elliott, Angela Ferree, Debra Price Jan 1996

Literature-Based Reading Instruction: Problems, Possibilities & Polemics In The Struggle To Change, James V. Hoffman, Sarah J. Mccarthy, Judy A. Abbott, Debra Bayles, Bonnie Elliott, Angela Ferree, Debra Price

Faculty Publications

Concerns are being raised in both professional literature as well as in the popular press regarding certain aspects of the literature-based movement. Here we report on findings from a longitudinal study of a group of first -grade teachers who have been attempting (with varying degrees of success)to introduce literature-based teaching strategies into their classrooms. We inspect the experiences of these teachers in relation to four areas of concern that have been raised regarding literature-based teaching: 1. skills instruction; 2.guided reading strategies; 3. literature selection;and 4. thematic teaching (or curriculum integration). We describe classroom practices and the 9 problems and possibilities …

Teaching The Elephant To Dance: Privatizing The Fda Review Process, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price Jan 1996

Teaching The Elephant To Dance: Privatizing The Fda Review Process, Elizabeth Price Foley, Elizabeth C. Price

Faculty Publications

Considers the implications of privatizing the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) review of the safety and efficacy of medical devices and drugs. Concludes that the FDA's flaws - namely, a risk avoidance culture and autocratic style of regulation - can only be accomplished by breaking the agency's monopolization of this review function.

Development Of A Defined Minimal Medium For The Growth Of Edwardsiella Ictaluri, L. A. Collins, R. L. Thune

Faculty Publications

In this report, a complete defined medium and a minimally defined medium are described for Edwardsiella ictaluri. The complete defined medium consists of 46 individual components, including a basal salt solution, glucose, magnesium sulfate, iron sulfate, six trace metals, four nucleotides, 10 vitamins, and 19 amino acids. This medium supports growth in broth and on solid media. Optimal growth at 30°C was obtained at pH 7.0, and at an osmolality of 390 mosmol/kg of H2O, with a glucose concentration of 4 g/liter. The defined minimal medium reduces the 46 components of the complete medium to eight essential components, including the …

Defamation, Reputation, And The Myth Of Community, Lyrissa Lidsky Jan 1996

Defamation, Reputation, And The Myth Of Community, Lyrissa Lidsky

Faculty Publications

The complex interaction between defamation, reputation, and community values defines the tort of defamation. A defamatory communication tends to harm a plaintiff's reputation in the eyes of the plaintiff's community. Thus, to determine whether a given statement is defamatory, courts must first identify the plaintiff's community and its norms - an inquiry that presents both theoretical and doctrinal difficulties in a heterogeneous and pluralistic society. Current approaches to identifying the plaintiff's community are particularly inadequate in two common types of cases: (1) cases in which the plaintiff belongs to a subcommunity espousing different values than those prevailing generally, and (2) …

Survey Results: Use Of Durable Powers, David M. English Jan 1996

Survey Results: Use Of Durable Powers, David M. English

Faculty Publications

The use of durable powers of attorney (DPA) has developed rapidly over the last decade. This growth reflects the public's desire for a simple and effective method of planning for possible incapacity. Although there are other planning tools, individuals frequently prefer the DPA. It is more comprehensive and provides greater certainty of result than does a joint bank account. A DPA is much easier to create than a revocable trust. By using a DPA, one can avoid an intrusive and possibly cumbersome guardianship or conservatorship proceeding.

A Low-Co2-Inducible Gene Encoding An Alanine:Α-Ketoglutarate Aminotransferase In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Zhi Yuan Chen, Mark D. Burow, Catherine B. Mason, James V. Moroney Jan 1996

A Low-Co2-Inducible Gene Encoding An Alanine:Α-Ketoglutarate Aminotransferase In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Zhi Yuan Chen, Mark D. Burow, Catherine B. Mason, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

At low-CO2 (air) conditions, the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii acquires the ability to raise its internal inorganic carbon concentration. To study this adaptation to low CO2, cDNA clones induced under low-CO2 growth conditions were selected through differential screening. One full-length clone is 2552 bp, with an open reading frame encoding 521 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence shows about 50% identity with alanine:α-ketoglutarate aminotransferase (Ala AT, EC 2.6.1.2) from plants and animals, and the mRNA of this clone increased 4- to 5-fold 4 h after cells were switched from high-CO2 to low-CO2 growth conditions. The expression of the …

Responses Of Methanotrophic Activity In Soils And Cultures To Water Stress, S. Schnell, G. M. King Jan 1996

Responses Of Methanotrophic Activity In Soils And Cultures To Water Stress, S. Schnell, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

Diffusive gas transport at high water contents and physiological water stress at low water contents limited atmospheric methane consumption rates during experimental manipulations of soil water content and water potential. Maximum rates of atmospheric methane consumption occurred at a soil water content of 25% (grams per gram [dry weight]) and a water potential of about - 0.2 MPa. In contrast, uptake rates were highest at a water content of 38% and a water potential of -0.03 MPa when methane was initially present at 200 ppm. Uptake rates of atmospheric and elevated methane decreased when water potentials were reduced by adding …

Regulation Of Methane Oxidation In A Freshwater Wetland By Water Table Changes And Anoxia, Peter Roslev, Gary M. King Jan 1996

Regulation Of Methane Oxidation In A Freshwater Wetland By Water Table Changes And Anoxia, Peter Roslev, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

The effects of water table fluctuations and anoxia on methane emission and methane oxidation were studied in a freshwater marsh. Seasonal aerobic methane oxidation rates varied between 15% and 76% of the potential diffusive methane flux (diffusive flux in the absence of aerobic oxidation). On an annual basis, approximately 43% of the methane diffusing into the oxic zone was oxidized before reaching the atmosphere. The highest methane oxidation was observed when the water table was below the peat surface. This was confirmed in laboratory experiments where short-term decreases in water table levels increased methane oxidation but also net methane emission. …

Improving Access To Food In Low-Income Communities: An Investigation Of Three Bay Area Neighborhoods, Edward Steinman, Kenneth Hecht Jan 1996

Improving Access To Food In Low-Income Communities: An Investigation Of Three Bay Area Neighborhoods, Edward Steinman, Kenneth Hecht

Faculty Publications

This report seeks to describe and analyze that dysfunction as it manifests itself in three low-income neighborhoods in San Francisco and Oakland. It does not examine the causes nor scope of poverty in those communities nor does it intend to estimate or describe the prevalence of hunger. These measures are amply documented in a 1995 report on hunger and the problem of food "insecurity" commissioned by the California Senate Office of Research and, in 1993 and 1994, reports on hunger from the Alameda County Community Food Bank and San Francisco Food Bank, respectively. Rather, this report treats poverty, hunger and …

Anodic Oxidation Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid On Platinum Electrode In Alkaline Medium, S. N. R. Pakalapati, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 1996

Anodic Oxidation Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid On Platinum Electrode In Alkaline Medium, S. N. R. Pakalapati, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The anodic oxidation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied in alkaline medium on a smooth platinum electrode. Bulk electrolysis indicated that stable organic intermediates (formaldehyde and glyoxal) are formed during the oxidation of EDTA and that complete oxidation to CO2 can be achieved. The proposed pathway suggests that the acetate groups in EDTA are initially oxidized, generating formaldehyde and ethylenediamine. The rest potential of EDTA (0.066 to 0.164 V vs. Hg/HgO) was observed to be higher than for other organic species. In alkaline medium, very little EDTA oxidation was found to occur on bare platinum. Limiting-current behavior due to …

Common Schools, Uncommon Values: Listening To The Voices Of Dissent, Rosemary C. Salomone Jan 1996

Common Schools, Uncommon Values: Listening To The Voices Of Dissent, Rosemary C. Salomone

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Education in America as we know it today draws its origins from the philosophical perspectives and political objectives of the common school reformers over a century ago. For them, mass education was a primary vehicle for defining ourselves as a nation. Schools would develop civic virtue and a national character through a shared set of values reflected in the school curriculum. The common school experience, offered to all regardless of social class or ethnic background, would assimilate the hordes of immigrants coming to our shores and meet the emerging needs of industrialization. Individuals across the economic spectrum, afforded education …
