The Influence Of Product Publicity On Product Sales In A Noncompetitive Environment, Richard A. Heiens Jan 1999

The Influence Of Product Publicity On Product Sales In A Noncompetitive Environment, Richard A. Heiens

Faculty Publications

In an effort to more fully integrate publicity into the marketing and promotion mix, the present study examines the influence of product-related newspaper, television, and radiopublicity on Lotto sales in the state of Colorado. The results of the present study indicate that in addition to Jackpot size, television publicity has a statistically significant positive impact on Lotto sales, whereas newspaper and radio publicity do not. Consequently, in their efforts to generate favorable publicity, lottery managers should emphasize the dissemination of jackpot size information via the television medium. Moreover, considering the observed 90% duration interval of .8651 weeks for the influence …

Propositions For Information Technology: Planning For Success, Ken Haycock, G. Jopson Jan 1999

Propositions For Information Technology: Planning For Success, Ken Haycock, G. Jopson

Faculty Publications

In Canada, the West Vancouver School Board proposed 13 propositions about the selection, management, and effective use of information technology. For each proposition, the senior management included a full outline of the current status, a plan of action, the name of the staff member responsible, and a time line. An external assessment of implementation of each proposition and of the impact on achievement was undertaken. The propositions, clustered in the areas of vision, statement of beliefs, student learning goals, definition, social issues, learning issues, clarification of roles and responsibilities, integration of information delivery systems, community-based information infrastructure, and assessment, are …

The False Litigant Syndrome: "Nobody Would Say That Unless It Was The Truth", Alan Scheflin, Daniel Brown Jan 1999

The False Litigant Syndrome: "Nobody Would Say That Unless It Was The Truth", Alan Scheflin, Daniel Brown

Faculty Publications

In this article we intend to focus on the narrow but increasingly more signif icant issue of retractors in malpractice actions against therapists. It is generally believed that people do not make confessions unless they are actually guilty. It is also generally believed that retractors who recant their earlier statements must now be telling the truth. Courts have allowed expert testimony to be admitted on the issue of why people will falsely confess. In this paper we argue that expert testimony on why people falsely recant should also be admissible.

Mothers And Doctors' Orders: Unmasking The Doctor's Fiduciary Role In Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, Michelle Oberman Jan 1999

Mothers And Doctors' Orders: Unmasking The Doctor's Fiduciary Role In Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, Michelle Oberman

Faculty Publications

This article reframes the contemporary legal and ethical debates generated by pregnant women who resist medical advice. Presently known as "maternal-fetal conflicts," these dilemmas arise in contexts ranging from religious refusals of blood transfusions to cocaine addiction. The vast literature discussing these conflicts focuses entirely on the competing rights of mothers and fetuses, and overwhelmingly concludes that the mother's rights prevail. Entirely absent from this analysis is one of the primary parties to these conflicts - the doctor. As a result, the doctor's role in generating these conflicts is eclipsed, and one scarcely notices that these scenarios all are linked …

The Leak And The Craft: A Hard Line Proposal To Stop Unaccountable Disclosures Of Law Enforcement Information, John Q. Barrett

Faculty Publications

The critics of Kenneth W. Starr accused him, in the five-plus years that he served as the multi-tasked Independent Counsel, of many failings, mistakes, and improprieties. One of the most prevalent charges was one that has significance to lawyers and resonates with the general public's sense of bad behavior by prosecutors: the allegation that Starr and/or members of his staff "leaked" information. This general accusation was, of course, imprecise. It also might have been overbroad. Prosecutorial "leaks" include such plain illegalities as disclosing grand jury information to the media or other unauthorized persons, and also the much less regulated practice …

Framers’ Intent And Military Power: Has Supreme Court Deference To The Military Gone Too Far?, Kalyani Robbins Jan 1999

Framers’ Intent And Military Power: Has Supreme Court Deference To The Military Gone Too Far?, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1791 and known as the Bill of Rights, create the core of what people today consider their most basic freedoms. Without these rights, and consistent judicial adherence to them, most Americans would not feel secure. There are two major sources of danger to these basic rights: internal and external. Internally, we must protect ourselves from our own infringement of these rights through the firm restrictions that the Constitution places on the government in its treatment of the people. Externally, we must protect our system of maintaining these freedoms from …

Atticus, David, And Raymond: Role Models For Ya Males, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

I can't listen to Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses," a sentimental song about a father and his daughter without crying. Every time I hear it, I want to pull my nearest daughter onto my lap, hold her tight, and bury my face in her shoulder while I cry about the eventual loss of my little girl. Unfortunately—or fortunately, if you're one of my daughters—my maudlin reaction to the song prompted my three teenage daughters to ban the recording from our home, so I rarely got to listen to it—and weep—anymore.

Structuring Time And Task In Electronic Brainstorming, Alan R. Dennis, Jay E. Aronson, William G. Heninger, Edward D. Walker Ii Jan 1999

Structuring Time And Task In Electronic Brainstorming, Alan R. Dennis, Jay E. Aronson, William G. Heninger, Edward D. Walker Ii

Faculty Publications

There are many ways in which a GSS can beused to support group brainstorming. This paper reports the results of an experiment that manipulated task structure and time structure. Groups electronically brainstormed on intact tasks(where all parts of the task were presented simultaneously) or on partitioned tasks (where three subcategories of the task were presented to thegroups). The time periods in which groups worked were either one 30-minute time period or three 10-minute periods separated by two-minute breaks. Groups in the partitioned task treatment generated 40% more ideas, but there were no time effects. These differences are attributed to the …

A Recursive Green's Function Method For Boundary Integral Analysis Of Inhomogeneous Domains, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen Dec 1998

A Recursive Green's Function Method For Boundary Integral Analysis Of Inhomogeneous Domains, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen

Faculty Publications

The recursive Green's function method (RGFM) for computation of fields scattered by two-dimensional (2-D) inhomogeneous dielectric bodies is presented. The algorithm efficiently constructs the Green's function for the inhomogeneous region by recursively combining known Green's functions from smaller subdomains. The fields on the scatterer surface are then computed using a boundary integral formulation. Proper implementation of the RGFM results in computational and storage complexities which scale as N1.5 and N, respectively, where N is the total number of discrete cells in a domain. Comparisons of results obtained using the RGFM with those computed from moment method and exact solutions show …

Isolation Of A Highly Active Photosystem Ii Preparation From Synechocystis 6803 Using A Histidine-Tagged Mutant Of Cp 47, Terry M. Bricker, Jason Morvant, Najy Masri, Holly M. Sutton, Laurie K. Frankel Nov 1998

Isolation Of A Highly Active Photosystem Ii Preparation From Synechocystis 6803 Using A Histidine-Tagged Mutant Of Cp 47, Terry M. Bricker, Jason Morvant, Najy Masri, Holly M. Sutton, Laurie K. Frankel

Faculty Publications

Site-directed mutagenesis was used to produce a Synechocystis mutant containing a histidine tag at the C terminus of the CP 47 protein of Photosystem II. This mutant cell line, designated HT-3, exhibited slightly above normal rates of oxygen evolution and appeared to accumulate somewhat more Photosystem II reaction centers than a control strain. A rapidly isolatable (<7 >h) oxygen-evolving Photosystem II preparation was prepared from HT-3 using dodecyl-β-d-maltoside solubilization and Co2+ metal affinity chromatography. This histidine-tagged Photosystem II preparation stably evolved oxygen at a high rate (2440 μmol O2 (mg chl)-1 h-1), exhibited an α-band absorption maximum at 674 nm, …

Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Melissa Whiting, Richard L. Larson

Faculty Publications

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June, 1998, for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related studies that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …

Interior Blowup In A Convection-Diffusion Equation, Christopher P. Grant Nov 1998

Interior Blowup In A Convection-Diffusion Equation, Christopher P. Grant

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the qualitative behavior of a nonlinear convection-diffusion equation on a smooth bounded domain in Rn, in which the strength of the convection grows superlinearly as the density increases. While the initial-boundary value problem is guaranteed to have a local-in-time solution for smooth initial data, it is possible for this solution to be extinguished in nite time. We demonstrate that the way this may occur is through nite-time "blow up," i.e., the unboundedness of the solution in arbitrarily small neighborhoods of one or more points in the closure of the spatial domain. In special circumstances, such as the …

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Polycrystals. Ii. Applications To Elasticity And Piezoelectricity, Yury Grabovsky, Daniel S. Sage Oct 1998

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Polycrystals. Ii. Applications To Elasticity And Piezoelectricity, Yury Grabovsky, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

An important necessary condition for an exact relation for effective moduli of polycrystals to hold is stability of that relation under lamination. This requirement is so restrictive that it is possible (if not always feasible) to find all such relations explicitly. In order to do this one needs to combine the results developed in Part I of this paper and the representation theory of the rotation groups SO(2) and SO(3). More precisely, one needs to know all rotationally invariant subspaces of the space of material moduli. This paper presents an algorithm for finding all such subspaces. We illustrate the workings …

Educating Nomads: Narratives And The Future Of Civic Education, Melvin J. Dubnick Sep 1998

Educating Nomads: Narratives And The Future Of Civic Education, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

The concern for civic education has re-entered the mainstream agenda of American political science. The primary task is to consider what should be done to “reach” the next generation of students. Most efforts in this regard have operated under the assumption that students of the future will be like students of the past. Based on this view, the problem is most often regarded as a matter of selecting an effective way to disseminate relevant knowledge. In this paper I argue for operating on a different set of assumptions, i.e. that we need to take seriously the emergence of the new …

Library Home Page Design: A Comparison Of Page Layout For Front-Ends To Arl Library Web Sites, David L. King Sep 1998

Library Home Page Design: A Comparison Of Page Layout For Front-Ends To Arl Library Web Sites, David L. King

Faculty Publications

The author examined the home pages of all 120 libraries in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in order to compare design similarities and differences. This was accomplished by first filling out a questionnaire on each home page and then tabulating the findings using simple averages and medians. Areas examined were: backgrounds, document headers, document footers, document body, page length, number of steps to library home page from parent institution Web site, and domain name servers. A typical home page is discussed using the averages of these results.

A Cloned Erwinia Chrysanthemi Hrp (Type Iii Protein Secretion) System Functions In Escherichia Coli To Deliver Pseudomonas Syringae Avr Signals To Plant Cells And To Secrete Avr Proteins In Culture, Jong Hyun Ham, David W. Bauer, Derrick E. Fouts, Alan Collmer Aug 1998

A Cloned Erwinia Chrysanthemi Hrp (Type Iii Protein Secretion) System Functions In Escherichia Coli To Deliver Pseudomonas Syringae Avr Signals To Plant Cells And To Secrete Avr Proteins In Culture, Jong Hyun Ham, David W. Bauer, Derrick E. Fouts, Alan Collmer

Faculty Publications

The Hrp (type III protein secretion) system is essential for the plant parasitic ability of Pseudomonas syringae and most Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogens. AvrB and AvrPto are two P. syringae proteins that have biological activity when produced via heterologous gene expression inside plant cells or when produced by Hrp+ bacteria. Art-like proteins, presumably injected by the Hrp system on bacterial contact with plant cells, appear to underlie pathogenic interactions, but none has been observed outside of the bacterial cytoplasm, and identifying novel genes encoding them is tedious and uncertain without a phenotype in culture. Here we describe a cloned Hrp …

Dynamics And Energetics Of Bubble Growth In Magmas: Analytical Formulation And Numerical Modeling, Alexander A. Prusevich, Dork L. Sahagian Aug 1998

Dynamics And Energetics Of Bubble Growth In Magmas: Analytical Formulation And Numerical Modeling, Alexander A. Prusevich, Dork L. Sahagian

Faculty Publications

We have developed a model of diffusive and decompressive growth of a bubble in a finite region of melt which accounts for the energetics of volatile degassing and melt deformation as well as the interactions between magmatic system parameters such as viscosity, volatile concentration, and diffusivity. On the basis of our formulation we constructed a numerical model of bubble growth in volcanic systems. We conducted a parametric study in which a saturated magma is instantaneously decompressed to one bar and the sensitivity of the system to variations in various parameters is examined. Variations of each of seven parameters over practical …

Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091 Jul 1998

Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091

Faculty Publications

Boiler ash deposits generated during combustion of coal, biomass, black liquor, and energetic materials affect both the net plant efficiency and operating strategy of essentially all boilers. Such deposits decrease convective and radiative heat exchange with boiler heat transfer surfaces. In many cases, even a small amount of ash on a surface decreases local heat transfer rates by factors of three or more. Apart from their impact on heat transfer, ash deposits in boilers represent potential operational problems and boiler maintenance issues, including plugging, tube wastage (erosion and corrosion), and structural damage. This report relates the chemistry and microstructural properties …

Most members of congregations are inattentive to both the past and the future of their congregation. They live in a very present now. An adequate doctrine of the Trinity can liberate congregations from this imprisonment in the present; it will call for visioning and planning in congregational life.

Binary Multilevel Convolutional Codes With Unequal Error Protection Capabilities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Hideki Imai Jul 1998

Binary Multilevel Convolutional Codes With Unequal Error Protection Capabilities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

Binary multilevel convolutional codes (CCs) with unequal error protection (UEP) capabilities are studied. These codes belong to the class of generalized concatenated (GC) codes. Binary CCs are used as outer codes. Binary linear block codes of short length, and selected subcodes in their two-way subcode partition chain, are used as inner codes. Multistage decodings are presented that use Viterbi decoders operating on trellises with similar structure to that of the constituent binary CCs. Simulation results of example binary two-level CC's are also reported.
