Density And Conformation With Relaxed Substrate, Bulk, And Interface In Electrophoretic Deposition Of Polymer Chains, F.W. Bentrem, J. Xie, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Characteristics of relaxed density profile and conformation of polymer chains are studied by a Monte Carlo simulation on a discrete lattice in three dimensions using different segmental (kink-jump (K), crank-shaft (C), reptation (R)) dynamics. Three distinct density regimes, substrate, bulk, and interface, are identified. With the KC segmental dynamics, we find that the substrate coverage grows with a power law, ds∝tγ with a field (E) dependent non-universal exponent γ=0.23+0.7E. The bulk volume fraction db and the substrate polymer density (ds) increases with the field with power-laws (db …

Local Systems On Nilpotent Orbits And Weighted Dynkin Diagrams, Pramod N. Achar, Eric N. Sommers Sep 2002

Local Systems On Nilpotent Orbits And Weighted Dynkin Diagrams, Pramod N. Achar, Eric N. Sommers

Faculty Publications

We study the Lusztig-Vogan bijection for the case of a local system. We compute the bijection explicitly in type A for a local system and then show that the dominant weights obtained for different local systems on the same orbit are related in a manner made precise in the paper. We also give a conjecture (putatively valid for all groups) detailing how the weighted Dynkin diagram for a nilpotent orbit in the dual Lie algebra should arise under the bijection. © 2002 American Mathematical Society.

[1] The short-lived but intense discharge of freshwater from tropical rivers into the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Lagoon and the associated salinity reductions are a critical consideration in marine research and management of the ecologically sensitive GBR World Heritage Area. Salinity provides a unique tracer that gives clues to the origin of river-borne contaminants and allows the influences of storm-induced resuspension and river discharge on turbidity to be clearly distinguished. We describe a field investigation of the evolution and dynamics of the Herbert River plume in the central GBR. Its primary goals were to use an airborne salinity mapper and …

Non-Semisimple Hopf Algebras Of Dimension P2, Siu Hung Ng Sep 2002

Non-Semisimple Hopf Algebras Of Dimension P2, Siu Hung Ng

Faculty Publications

Let H be, finite-dimensional Hopf algebra with antipode S of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, where p ≤ q are odd primes. If H is not semisimple, then the order of S4 is p, and Tr(S2p) is an integer divisible by p2. In particular, if dim H = p2, we prove that H is isomorphic to a Taft algebra. This completes the classification for the Hopf algebras of dimension p2. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved.

Modeling The Thermal Behavior Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear-Displacement Thermomechanical Microactuator, Christian D. Lott, Timothy W. Mclain, John N. Harb, Larry L. Howell Sep 2002

Modeling The Thermal Behavior Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear-Displacement Thermomechanical Microactuator, Christian D. Lott, Timothy W. Mclain, John N. Harb, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Thermomechanical microactuators possess a number of desirable attributes including ease of fabrication and large force and displacement capabilities relative to other types of microactuators. These advantages provide motivation for improving thermomechanical microactuator designs that are more energy efficient and thus better suited for low-power applications. To this end, this paper describes the development and experimental validation of a finite-difference thermal model of a thermomechanical in-plane microactuator (TIM). Comparisons between the model and experimental results demonstrate the importance of including the temperature dependence of several parameters in the model. Strategies for reducing the power and energy requirements of the TIM were …

Correlation Between Volcanic And Tectonic Segmentation Of Fast-Spreading Ridges: Evidence From Volcanic Structures And Lava Flow Morphology On The East Pacific Rise At 9˚-10˚N, Scott M. White, Rachel M. Haymon, D J. Fornari, Michael R. Perfit, Ken C. Macdonald Aug 2002

Faculty Publications

Combined analyses of volcanic features in DSL-120 sonar data and Argo I images along the ridge crest of the East Pacific Rise, 9_090–540N reveal a consistent decrease in inferred lava effusion rate toward the ends of third-order segments. The correlation of tectonic segmentation and volcanic style suggests that third-order segmentation corresponds to the volcanic segmentation of the ridge. Along-axis changes in volcanic structures (from collapse troughs to basaltic lava domes) and lava morphology (from sheet to pillow flows) coincide with the boundaries of morphologically defined third order tectonic segments of the ridge crest visible in shipboard multibeam bathymetry. Pillow lava …

The production of neutrons carrying at least 20% of the proton beam energy (xL > 0.2) in e+ p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for a wide range of Q2, the photon virtuality, from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering. The neutron-tagged cross section, ep → e′ Xn, is measured relative to the inclusive cross section, ep → e′ X, thereby reducing the systematic uncertainties. For xL > 0.3, the rate of neutrons in photoproduction is about half of that measured in hadroproduction, which constitutes a clear breaking of factorisation. There is about a 20% rise in the …

Experimental Demonstration Of Multiple Robot Cooperative Target Intercept, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Jed M. Kelsey Aug 2002

Experimental Demonstration Of Multiple Robot Cooperative Target Intercept, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Jed M. Kelsey

Faculty Publications

This paper presents experimental results for the simultaneous intercept of preassigned targets by a team of mobile robots. The robots are programmed to mimic the dynamic behavior of unmanned air vehicles in constant-altitude flight. In proceeding to their targets, robots must avoid both known static threats and pop-up threats. An overview of the cooperative control strategy followed is given, as well as a description of the robot hardware and software used. Experimental results demonstrating simultaneous intercept of targets by the robot team are presented.

Simulations Of The Instability Of The M = 1 Self-Shielding Diocotron Mode In Finite-Length Non-Neutral Plasmas, Grant W. Mason, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

The "self-shielding" m = 1 diocotron mode in Malmberg-Penning traps has been known for over a decade to be unstable for finite length non-neutral plasmas with hollow density profiles. Early theoretical efforts were unsuccessful in accounting for the exponential growth and/or the magnitude of the growth rate. Recent theoretical work has sought to resolve the discrepancy either as a consequence of the shape of the plasma ends or as a kinetic effect resulting from a modified distribution function as a consequence of the protocol used to form the hollow profiles in experiments. Both of these finite length mechanisms have been …

Analysis And Classification Of Nonlinear Dispersive Evolution Equations In The Potential Representation, U. A. Eichmann, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer Jul 2002

Analysis And Classification Of Nonlinear Dispersive Evolution Equations In The Potential Representation, U. A. Eichmann, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A potential representation for the subset of travelling solutions of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations is introduced. The procedure involves reduction of a third-order partial differential equation to a first-order ordinary differential equation. The potential representation allows us to deduce certain properties of the solutions without the actual need to solve the underlying evolution equation. In particular, the paper deals with the so-called K(n, m) equations. Starting from their respective potential representations it is shown that these equations can be classified according to a simple point transformation. As a result, e.g., all equations with linear dispersion join the same equivalence class …

Cross sections for e - p charged current deep inelastic scattering have been measured at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 16.4 pb -1 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. Differential cross sections dσ/dQ 2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy are presented for Q 2 > 200 GeV 2. In addition, d 2σ/(dxdQ 2) was measured in the kinematic range 280 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 30 000 GeV 2 and 0.015 < × < 0.42. The predictions of the Standard Model agree well with the measured cross sections. The mass of the W boson, determined from a fit to dσ/dQ 2, is M W = 80.3±2.1(stat.) ± 1.2(syst.) ± 1.0(PDF) GeV. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Density Profile And Flow Of Miscible Fluid With Dissimilar Constituent Masses, Ras B. Pandey, D. Stauffer, R. Seyfarth, Luis A. Cueva, J.F. Gettrust, Warren Wood

Faculty Publications

A computer simulation model is used to study the density profile and flow of a miscible gaseous fluid mixture consisting of differing constituent masses (m(A) = m(B)/3) through an open matrix. The density profile is found to decay with the height proportional to exp(-m(A(B))h), consistent with the barometric height law. The flux density shows a power-law increase proportional to (p(c) - p)(a) with mu similar or equal to 2.3 at the porosity 1 - p above the pore percolation threshold 1 - p(c). Electronic Transport Through A Nuclear-Spin-Polarization-Induced Quantum Wire, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, S. N. Shevchenko, I. D. Vagner, P. Wyder

Faculty Publications

Electron transport in a low-dimensional structure—the nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum wire is theoretically studied. In the proposed system the local nuclear-spin polarization creates the effective hyperfine field that confines the electrons with the spins opposite to the hyperfine field to the regions of maximal nuclear-spin polarization. The influence of the nuclear-spin relaxation and diffusion on the electron energy spectrum and on the conductance of the quantum wire is calculated and the experimental feasibility is discussed.

Relaxation Through Homogenization For Optimal Design Problems With Gradient Constraints, R. Lipton

Faculty Publications

The problem of the relaxation of optimal design problems for multiphase composite structures in the presence of constraints on the gradient of the state variable is addressed. A relaxed formulation for the problem is given in the presence of either a finite or infinite number of constraints. The relaxed formulation is used to identify minimizing sequences of configurations of phases.

Interdisciplinarity: The Road Ahead For Education In Digital Libraries, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This article reviews the state of education in digital libraries and curriculum planning documents from professional associations in two areas: Library and Information Science; and Computing. It examines suggestions for integration and interdisciplinarity in education for digital libraries curricula using definitions of a discipline, interdisciplinarity, and the transdisciplinary structure of a university in order to discover how such integration may be successfully accomplished. A plan to use learning communities and develop an interdisciplinary curriculum for Knowledge Organization is briefly discussed.

Vibrational Modes Of Thin Oblate Clouds Of Charge, Thomas G. Jenkins, Ross L. Spencer Jul 2002

Vibrational Modes Of Thin Oblate Clouds Of Charge, Thomas G. Jenkins, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

A numerical method is presented for finding the eigenfunctions (normal modes) and mode frequencies of azimuthally symmetric non-neutral plasmas confined in a Penning trap whose axial thickness is much smaller than their radial size. The plasma may be approximated as a charged disk in this limit; the normal modes and frequencies can be found if the surface charge density profile sigma(r) of the disk and the trap bounce frequency profile wz(r) are known. The dependence of the eigenfunctions and equilibrium plasma shapes on nonideal components of the confining Penning trap fields is discussed. The results of the calculation are compared …

As the Internet began its exponential growth into a global information environment, software was often unreliable, slow and had difficulty in interoperating with other systems. Supercomputing node counts also continue to follow high growth trends. Supercomputer and grid resource management software must mature into a reliable computational platform in much the same way that web services matured for the Internet. DOGMA The Next Generation (DOGMA-NG) improves on current resource management approaches by using tested off-the-shelf enterprise technologies to build a robust, scalable, and extensible resource management platform. Distributed web service technologies constitute the core of DOGMA-NG’s design and provide fault …

[1] Results of a single-blind round-robin comparison of satellite primary productivity algorithms are presented. The goal of the round-robin exercise was to determine the accuracy of the algorithms in predicting depth-integrated primary production from information amenable to remote sensing. Twelve algorithms, developed by 10 teams, were evaluated by comparing their ability to estimate depth-integrated daily production (IP, mg C m(-2)) at 89 stations in geographically diverse provinces. Algorithms were furnished information about the surface chlorophyll concentration, temperature, photosynthetic available radiation, latitude, longitude, and day of the year. Algorithm results were then compared with IP estimates derived from (14)C uptake measurements …

We show that it is possible to learn the contexts for linguistic operations which map a semantic representation to a surface syntactic tree in sentence realization with high accuracy. We cast the problem of learning the contexts for the linguistic operations as classification tasks, and apply straightforward machine learning techniques, such as decision tree learning. The training data consist of linguistic features extracted from syntactic and semantic representations produced by a linguistic analysis system. The target features are extracted from links to surface syntax trees. Our evidence consists of four examples from the German sentence realization system code-named Amalgam: case …

Intelligent Scissors and Intelligent Paint are complementary interactive image segmentation tools that allow a user to quickly and accurately select objects of interest using simple gesture motions with a mouse. With Intelligent Scissors. when the cursor position comes in proximity to an object edge, a live-wire boundary “snaps” to, and wraps around the object of interest. The Intelligent Paint tool uses the cursor position to sample the image data interior to the object and grows the current region, in discrete, snapping increments, to include similar neighboring regions. Both techniques make use of a watershed algorithm called toboganning. Wth Intelligent Scissors, …

The exclusive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons, γp → J/ψp, has been studied in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, in the kinematic range 20 < W < 290 GeV, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The J/ψ mesons were reconstructed in the ninon and the electron decay channels using integrated luminosities of 38 pb-1 and 55 pb-1, respectively. The helicity structure of J/ψ production shows that the hypothesis of s-channel helicity conservation is satisfied within two standard deviations. The total cross section and the differential cross-section dσ/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are presented as a function of W, for |t| < 18 Ge2. The t distribution exhibits an exponential shape with a slope parameter increasing logarithmically with W with a value b = 4.15 ± 0.05(stat.)-0.18+0.30(syst.) GeV-2 at W = 90 GeV. The effective parameters of the Pomeron trajectory are αℙ(0) = 1.200 ± 0.009(stat.) -0.010+0.004(Syst.) and α′ℙ = 0.115 ± 0.018(stat.)-0.015+0.008(syst.) GeV-2.

Haplotype-based methods offer a powerful approach to disease gene mapping, based on the association between causal mutations and the ancestral haplotypes on which they arose. As part of The SNP Consortium Allele Frequency Projects, we characterized haplotype patterns across 51 autosomal regions (spanning 13 megabases of the human genome) in samples from Africa, Europe, and Asia. We show that the human genome can be parsed objectively into haplotype blocks; sizable regions over which there is little evidence for historical recombination and within which only a few common haplotypes are observed. The boundaries of blocks and specific haplotypes they contain are …

A hypergraph is an interval hypergraph if its vertices can be linearly ordered so that all its edges are consecutive sets. Interval hypergraphs have been characterized by Tucker (J. Combin. Theory 12 (1972) 153) in terms of excluded subhypergraphs. In this paper, we strengthen Tucker's result for clutters by characterizing interval clutters in terms of excluded partial clutters, as well as excluded minors. Since minor and partial clutter relations are much more restrictive than the subhypergraph relation, our results are more applicable than Tucker's result in, many situations. As a lemma, we also determine all the minor minimal clutters that …

In this note, we study several issues in the design of localized quality-of-service (QoS) routing schemes that make routing decisions based on locally collected QoS state information (i.e., there is no network-wide information exchange among routers). In particular, we investigate the granularity of local QoS state information and its impact on the design of localized QoS routing schemes from a theoretical perspective. We develop two theoretical models for studying localized proportional routing: one using the link-level information and the other using path-level information. We compare the performance of these localized proportional routing models with that of a global optimal proportional …
