New Bounds For Randomized Busing, Steven S. Seiden, Peter P. Chen, R. F. Lax, J. Chen, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

We consider anonymous secure communication, where parties not only wish to conceal their communications from outside observers, but also wish to conceal the very fact that they are communicating. We consider the bus framework introduced by Beimel and Dolev (J. Cryptology 16 (2003) 25), where messages are delivered by a bus traveling on a random walk. We generalize this idea to consider more than one bus. We show that if w buses are allowed, then the expected delivery time for a message can be decreased from Θ(n) to Θ(n/w) in the case of a complete graph. Additionally, we introduce a …

Temperature Dependence Of The Double Layer Capacitance For The Restricted Primitive Model Of An Electrolyte Solution From A Density Functional Approach, Douglas Henderson, J. Reszko-Zygmunt, Stefan Sokolowski, Dezso Boda Feb 2005

Temperature Dependence Of The Double Layer Capacitance For The Restricted Primitive Model Of An Electrolyte Solution From A Density Functional Approach, Douglas Henderson, J. Reszko-Zygmunt, Stefan Sokolowski, Dezso Boda

Faculty Publications

We apply a different version of the density functional theory, given by Pizio, Patrykiejew, and Sokolowski [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 11957 (2004)], for a nonuniform restricted primitive model of an electrolyte solution to evaluate the temperature dependence of the capacitance of an electric double layer. We show that this theory is capable of reproducing the computer simulation data at a quantitative level. In particular, the reversal of the temperature dependence of the capacitance at low temperatures is predicted. This phenomenon has been difficult to predict from theory. Further, this theory also leads to an accurate description of the double layer …

Racah Coefficients, Subrepresentation Semirings, And Composite Materials, Daniel S. Sage Feb 2005

Racah Coefficients, Subrepresentation Semirings, And Composite Materials, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

Typically, physical properties of composite materials are strongly dependent on microstructure. However, in exceptional situations, exact relations exist which are microstructure-independent. Grabovsky has constructed an abstract theory of exact relations, reducing the search for exact relations to a purely algebraic problem involving the multiplication of SO (3)-subrepresentations in certain endomorphism algebras. This motivates us to introduce subrepresentation semirings, algebraic structures which formalize subrepresentation multiplication. We study the ideals and subsemirings of these semirings, relating them to properties of the underlying G-algebra and proving classification theorems in the case of endomorphism algebras of representations. For SU (2), we compute these semirings …

Resonant Transmission Near Nonrobust Periodic Slab Modes, Stephen P. Shipman, Stephanos Venakides Feb 2005

Resonant Transmission Near Nonrobust Periodic Slab Modes, Stephen P. Shipman, Stephanos Venakides

Faculty Publications

We present a precise theoretical explanation and prediction of certain resonant peaks and dips in the electromagnetic transmission coefficient of periodically structured slabs in the presence of nonrobust guided slab modes. We also derive the leading asymptotic behavior of the related phenomenon of resonant enhancement near the guided mode. The theory applies to structures in which losses are negligible and to very general geometries of the unit cell. It is based on boundary-integral representations of the electromagnetic fields. These depend on the frequency and on the Bloch wave vector and provide a complex-analytic connection in these parameters between generalized scattering …

A New Blind Method For Detecting Novel Steganography, Brent T. Mcbride, Gilbert L. Peterson, Steven C. Gustafson Feb 2005

A New Blind Method For Detecting Novel Steganography, Brent T. Mcbride, Gilbert L. Peterson, Steven C. Gustafson

Faculty Publications

Steganography is the art of hiding a message in plain sight. Modern steganographic tools that conceal data in innocuous-looking digital image files are widely available. The use of such tools by terrorists, hostile states, criminal organizations, etc., to camouflage the planning and coordination of their illicit activities poses a serious challenge. Most steganography detection tools rely on signatures that describe particular steganography programs. Signature-based classifiers offer strong detection capabilities against known threats, but they suffer from an inability to detect previously unseen forms of steganography. Novel steganography detection requires an anomaly-based classifier. This paper describes and demonstrates a blind classification …

Microwave Backscatter Modeling Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, David G. Long, Haroon Stephen Feb 2005

Microwave Backscatter Modeling Of Erg Surfaces In The Sahara Desert, David G. Long, Haroon Stephen

Faculty Publications

The Sahara desert includes large expanses of sand dunes called ergs. These dunes are formed and constantly reshaped by prevailing winds. Previous study shows that Saharan ergs exhibit significant radar backscatter (σ˚) modulation with azimuth angle (∅). We use σ˚ measurements observed at various incidence angles and ∅ from the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT), the SeaWinds scatterometer, the ERS scatterometer (ESCAT), and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's Precipitation Radar to model the σ˚ response from sand dunes. Observations reveal a characteristic relationship between the backscatter modulation and the dune type, i.e., the number and orientation of the dune slopes. Sand dunes …

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura Feb 2005

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

The ability for a given agent to adapt on-line to better interact with another agent is a difficult and important problem. This problem becomes even more difficult when the agent to interact with is a human, since humans learn quickly and behave non-deterministically. In this paper we present a novel method whereby an agent can incrementally learn to predict the actions of another agent (even a human), and thereby can learn to better interact with that agent. We take a case-based approach, where the behavior of the other agent is learned in the form of state-action pairs. We generalize these …

Graphs Whose Minimal Rank Is Two: The Finite Fields Case, Wayne Barrett, Hein Van Der Holst, Raphael Loewy Feb 2005

Graphs Whose Minimal Rank Is Two: The Finite Fields Case, Wayne Barrett, Hein Van Der Holst, Raphael Loewy

Faculty Publications

Let F be a finite field, G = (V,E) be an undirected graph on n vertices, and let S(F,G) be the set of all symmetric n × n matrices over F whose nonzero off-diagonal entries occur in exactly the positions corresponding to the edges of G. Let mr(F,G) be the minimum rank of all matrices in S(F,G). If F is a finite field with p^t elements, p does not = 2, it is shown that mr(F,G) ≤ 2 if and only if the complement of G is the join of a complete graph with either the union of at most …

1. It was once assumed that commercially important fish make up significant portions of seal diets. As a consequence, prior to the 1970s many seal populations were dramatically reduced by rampant slaughtering. Today, seals and other marine mammals are valued components of marine ecosystems and their numbers are carefully managed. To facilitate management, government statutes mandate the systematic monitoring of seal populations. Population estimates are based on counts of hauled-out seals obtained by aerial survey and radio and satellite telemetry; hence, considerable effort has been devoted to finding optimal times for such counts. We have developed a predictive mathematical model …

Compositions Of Theta Correspondences, Hongyu He Jan 2005

Compositions Of Theta Correspondences, Hongyu He

Faculty Publications

Theta correspondence θ over ℝ is established by Howe (J. Amer. Math. Soc. 2 (1989) 535). In He (J. Funct. Anal. 199 (2003) 92), we prove that θ preserves unitarity under certain restrictions, generalizing the result of Li (Invent. Math. 97 (1989) 237). The goal of this paper is to elucidate the idea of constructing unitary representation through the propagation of theta correspondences. We show that under a natural condition on the sizes of the related dual pairs which can be predicted by the orbit method (J. Algebra 190 (1997) 518; Representation Theory of Lie Groups, Park City, 1998, pp. …

Petrology Of Indus River Sands: A Key To Interpret Erosion History Of The Western Himalayan Syntaxis, Eduardo Garzanti, Giovanni Vezzoli, Sergio Andò, Paolo Paparella, Peter D. Clift

Faculty Publications

The Indus River has been progressively transformed in the last decades into a tightly regulated system of dams and channels, to produce food and energy for the rapidly growing population of Pakistan. Nevertheless, Indus River sands as far as the delta largely retain their distinct feldspar- and amphibole-rich composition, which is unique with respect to all other major rivers draining the Alpine-Himalayan belt except for the Brahmaputra. Both the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers flow for half of their course along the India-Asia suture zone, and receive major contributions from both Asian active-margin batholiths and upper-amphibolite-facies domes rapidly exhumed at the …

Central Invariants And Frobenius - Schur Indicators For Semisimple Quasi-Hopf Algebras, Geoffrey Mason, Siu Hung Ng Jan 2005

Central Invariants And Frobenius - Schur Indicators For Semisimple Quasi-Hopf Algebras, Geoffrey Mason, Siu Hung Ng

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we obtain a canonical central element νH for each semi-simple quasi-Hopf algebra H over any field k and prove that νH is invariant under gauge transformations. We show that if k is algebraically closed of characteristic zero then for any irreducible representation of H which affords the character χ, χ(νH) takes only the values 0, 1 or -1, moreover if H is a Hopf algebra or a twisted quantum double of a finite group then χ(νH) is the corresponding Frobenius-Schur indicator. We also prove an analog of a theorem of Larson-Radford for split semi-simple quasi-Hopf algebras over …

Predicting Ordinary Kriging Errors Caused By Surface Roughness And Dissectivity, I-Kuai Hung Jan 2005

Predicting Ordinary Kriging Errors Caused By Surface Roughness And Dissectivity, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

The magnitude of kriging errors varies in accordance with the surface properties. The purpose of this paper is to determine the association of ordinary kriging (OK) estimated errors with the local variability of surface roughness, and to analyze the suitability of probabilistic models for predicting the magnitude of OK errors from surface parameters. This task includes determining the terrain parameters in order to explain the variation in the magnitude of OK errors. The results of this research indicate that the higher order regression models, with complex interaction terms, were able to explain 95 per cent of the variation in the …

Faculty Publications

Owing to the fact that the near future should see a rapidly expanding set of probes of the halo masses of individual early-type galaxies, we introduce a convenient parameter for characterizing the halo masses from both observational and theoretical results: ∇ℓϒ, the logarithmic radial gradient of the mass-to-light ratio. Using halo density profiles from Λ-cold dark matter (CDM) simulations, we derive predictions for this gradient for various galaxy luminosities and star formation efficiencies εSF. As a pilot study, we assemble the available ∇ℓϒ data from kinematics in early-type galaxies – representing the first unbiased study of halo masses in a …

Antifungal Activity Of Camptothecin, Trifolin, And Hyperoside Isolated From Camptotheca Acuminata, Shiyou Li, Zhizhen Zhang, Abigail Cain, Bo Wang, Melissa Long, Josephine Taylor

Faculty Publications

Leaf spots and root rots are major fungal diseases in Camptotheca acuminata that limit cultivation of the plant for camptothecin (CPT), a promising anticancer and antiviral alkaloid. Bioassays showed that pure CPT and flavonoids (trifolin and hyperoside) isolated from Camptotheca effectively control fungal pathogens in vitro, including Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, Pestalotia guepinii, Drechslera sp., and Fusarium avenaceum, although antifungal activity of these compounds in the plant is limited. CPT inhibited mycelial growth by approximately 50% (EC50) at 10−30 μg/mL and fully inhibited growth at 75−125 μg/mL. The flavonoids were less effective than CPT …

Our long-term objective is to understand and model the motility of T. brucei. Obtaining high quality images of T. brucei that allow one to differentiate between cell body movement and flagallar movement is difficult with T. brucei because the flagellum is attached along the cell body. Currently, our approach his to tether T. brucei onto a microscope friendly surface. The contributions to the ISIS our progress to date. Specifically, we look at the adhesion density of T. brucei to numerous microscope friendly surfaces and at the optimum adhesion conditions for T. brucei.

Racial And Ethnic Attitudes And Individual Relatedness Among Greek-Americans, Constantine P. Danopoulos, Anna Karpathakis

Faculty Publications

The article looks at the self-identity of Greek immigrants in the U.S. and incorporation of American racial ideologies into their racial repertoires. It recognizes Greek Americans for creating a national and racial framework that blends elements of both home and host society institutions and ideologies. It recalls the arrival of thousands of Greek immigrants in the U.S. in the 20th century. The increasing inter-marriage rates between Greek immigrants and Greek Americans are also noted.

Modulation Identification And Carrier Recovery System For Adaptive Modulation In Satellite Communications, Kenta Umebayashi, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Ryuji Kohno Jan 2005

Modulation Identification And Carrier Recovery System For Adaptive Modulation In Satellite Communications, Kenta Umebayashi, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Ryuji Kohno

Faculty Publications

We introduce the modulation identification technique implementing the multimode phase locked loop (PLL) in the satellite communication using adaptive modulation scheme which is a countermeasure against the rain attenuation. In the multimode PLL, phase lock detectors (PLDs) are used for not only phase lock, but also modulation identification. We present the sub-optimized design of the PLDs for modulation identification with respect to the throughput and show the validity of sub-optimization. In addition, by the comparison between the multimode PLL and conventional scheme in ISDB-S, we present the effectivity of the multimode PLL.

A Public Interest Model For Applying Lost Chance Theory To Probabilistic Injuries In Employment Discrimination Cases, Paul M. Secunda Jan 2005

A Public Interest Model For Applying Lost Chance Theory To Probabilistic Injuries In Employment Discrimination Cases, Paul M. Secunda

Faculty Publications

This article assesses Judge Posner's opinion in Doll v. Brown, suggesting that lost chance theory be applied to probabilistic injuries in competitive hiring and promotion cases involving employment discrimination. I agree with Judge Posner that the lost chance remedial approach, derived from medical malpractice law, has a proper role to play in determining just and equitable remedies in this employment discrimination context. But I argue for a public interest model to appropriately take into account the public interest emphasis of employment discrimination law. I argue that courts should utilize a modified version of lost chance theory to award punitive-like equitable …

Beyond Bandaids: A Proposal For Reconfiguring Federal Sentencing After Booker, Frank O. Bowman Iii Jan 2005

Beyond Bandaids: A Proposal For Reconfiguring Federal Sentencing After Booker, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This Article proposes a simplified sentencing table consisting of nine base sentencing ranges, each subdivided into three sub-ranges. The base sentencing range would be determined by combining offense facts found by a jury or admitted in a plea with the defendant's criminal history. A defendant's placement in the sub-ranges would be determined by post-conviction judicial findings of sentencing factors. No upward departures from the base sentencing range would be permissible, but defendants might be sentenced below the low end of the base sentencing range as a result of an acceptance of responsibility credit or due to a downward departure motion. …

Testing Conjectures About Morphological Diversity In Cichlids Of Lakes Malawi And Tanganyika, Prosanta Chakrabarty Jan 2005

Testing Conjectures About Morphological Diversity In Cichlids Of Lakes Malawi And Tanganyika, Prosanta Chakrabarty

Faculty Publications

The morphological diversity of Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids has often been qualitatively described, but rarely have hypotheses based on these descriptions been tested empirically. Using landmark based geometric morphometrics, shapes are analyzed independent of other aspects of the body form (e.g., size). The estimation of shape disparity, the quantitative measure of the variance of these raw shapes, can then be applied in order to objectively test hypotheses about morphological diversity. The shape disparity within and between different groups is explored as well as how it is partitioned within the cichlid body. Tanganyika cichlids are found to have significantly greater shape …

Mitochondrial Variation In Bolivian Populations Of The Variable Antshrike (Thamnophilus Caerulescens), Robb T. Brumfield

Faculty Publications

The Variable Antshrike (Thamnophilus caerulescens) is arguably the most polytypic thamnophilid, with males ranging from almost entirely jet black to nearly white. The four subspecies that occur in Bolivia are strikingly divergent in male plumage: T. c. aspersiventer (black with white-barred belly), T. c. connectens (black back and bib with white belly), T. c. dinellii (gray throat and back with rufous belly), and T. c. paraguayensis (light gray with white belly). To assess the genetic structure of those taxa in Bolivia, sequence variation at the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene was screened in 126 individuals collected across transects spanning the plumage and …

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading, Evan J. Fedorko, Robert Gilmore Pontius Jr., Stephen P. Aldrich, Luc Claussens, Charles S. Hopkinson, Wilfred M. Wollheim Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading, Evan J. Fedorko, Robert Gilmore Pontius Jr., Stephen P. Aldrich, Luc Claussens, Charles S. Hopkinson, Wilfred M. Wollheim

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R² values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. We present an index that adds a new dimension of explanatory power when used in conjunction with …
