Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones Apr 2009

Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show how to generate test cases for a component deployed into a new software environment. This problem is important for software engineers who need to deploy a component into a new environment. Most existing model based testing approaches generate models from high level specifications. This leaves a semantic gap between the high level specification and the actual implementation. Furthermore, the high level specification often needs to be manually translated into a model, which is a time consuming and error prone process. We propose generating the model automatically by abstracting the source code of the component using …

Applications Of Forbidden Interval Theorems In Stochastic Resonance, Bart Kosko, Ian Lee, Sanya Mitaim, Ashok Patel, Mark M. Wilde Mar 2009

Applications Of Forbidden Interval Theorems In Stochastic Resonance, Bart Kosko, Ian Lee, Sanya Mitaim, Ashok Patel, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

Forbidden interval theorems state whether a stochastic-resonance noise benefit occurs based on whether the average noise value falls outside or inside an interval of parameter values. Such theorems act as a type of screening device for mutual-information noise benefits in the detection of subthreshold signals. Their proof structure reduces the search for a noise benefit to the often simple task of showing that a zero limit exists. This chapter presents the basic forbidden interval theorem for threshold neurons and four applications of increasing complexity. The first application shows that small amounts of electrical noise can help a carbon nanotube detect …

On Canonical Antichains, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

An antichain A of a well-founded quasi-order Q is canonical if for every ideal F of Q, F has an infinite antichain if and only if F ∩ A is infinite. In this paper we characterize the obstructions to having a canonical antichain. As an application we show that, under the induced subgraph relation, the class of finite graphs does not have a canonical antichain. In contrast, this class does have a canonical antichain with respect to the subgraph relation. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mammaglobin As A Potential Molecular Target For Breast Cancer Drug Delivery, Lian Zuo, Ly Li, Qian Wang, Timothy P. Fleming, Shaojin You Mar 2009

Mammaglobin As A Potential Molecular Target For Breast Cancer Drug Delivery, Lian Zuo, Ly Li, Qian Wang, Timothy P. Fleming, Shaojin You

Faculty Publications

Background Mammaglobin (MAM) has been used as a specific molecular marker for breast cancer diagnosis. Recently, several groups of researchers proposed a number of therapeutic strategies targeting this molecule. Some of the strategies are based upon an essential but not demonstrated hypothesis - mammaglobin is associated with the surface of breast cancer cells, which strongly disputes the therapeutic strategies. Results We conducted a computer-based predictive analysis and identified a small fragment at the N-end of MAM as a potential transmembrane domain. We provided several evidences to demonstrate the presence of the membrane-associated MAM. We isolated the membrane protein components from …

We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range 50-1100Hz and with the frequency's time derivative in the range -5×10-9-0Hzs-1. Data from the first eight months of the fifth LIGO science run (S5) have been used in this search, which is based on a semicoherent method (PowerFlux) of summing strain power. Observing no evidence of periodic gravitational radiation, we report 95% confidence-level upper limits on radiation emitted by any unknown isolated rotating neutron stars within the search range. Strain limits below 10-24 are obtained over a 200-Hz band, and the sensitivity …

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Templated Synthesis Of One Dimensional Inorganic–Polymer Hybrid Fibres, Jianhua Rong, Fiona Oberbeck, Xinnan Wang, Xiaodong Li, Jerry Oxsher, Zhongwei Niu, Qian Wang Mar 2009

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Templated Synthesis Of One Dimensional Inorganic–Polymer Hybrid Fibres, Jianhua Rong, Fiona Oberbeck, Xinnan Wang, Xiaodong Li, Jerry Oxsher, Zhongwei Niu, Qian Wang

Faculty Publications

Inorganic–polymer hybrid nanofibres were prepared by using a rod-like tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as a template. With tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor, long silica-coated TMVfibres were formed via a head-to-tail assembly, which showed a substantial increase of the elastic modulus. Furthermore, homogenous titania–TMV hybrid fibres could be prepared using polyaniline-coated TMV fibres as a template, which were used to form a composite film that was able to sense liquefied petroleum gases.

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes Mar 2009

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes

Faculty Publications

We present a newly developed microwave resonant cavity for use in optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) experiments. The cylindrical quasi-TE 011 mode cavity is designed to fit in a 1 in. magnet bore to allow the sample to be optically accessed and to have an adjustable resonant frequency between 8.5 and 12 GHz. The cavity uses cylinders of high dielectric material, so-called "dielectric resonators," in a double-stacked configuration to determine the resonant frequency. Wires in a pseudo-Helmholtz configuration are incorporated into the cavity to provide frequencies for simultaneous nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The system was tested by measuring cavity absorption …

Patrons Cataloging? The Role And Quality Of Patron Tagging In Item Description, William Lund, Allyson Washburn

Faculty Publications

With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, user participation in the description and evaluation of content has come to the library. User tagging is almost a given in applications such as Del.icio.us, Flickr, and LibraryThing. The question is whether tagging provided by users with their own motivations is better in some sense then descriptions provided by professionals. Is the tagging provided by the wisdom of the crowd a better description of an item?

The 20-Minute Genealogist: A Context-Preservation Metaphor For Assisted Family History Research, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein Mar 2009

The 20-Minute Genealogist: A Context-Preservation Metaphor For Assisted Family History Research, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein

Faculty Publications

What can you possibly do to be productive as a family history researcher in 20 minutes per week? Our studies suggest that currently the answer is, “Nothing.” In 20 minutes a would-be researcher can’t even remember what happened last week, let alone what they were planning to do next. The 20-Minute Genealogist is a powerful metaphor within which software solutions must consider context preservation as the fundamental domain of the system, thus freeing the researcher to do research while the software manages the tasks that computers do best. Two survey-based studies were conducted that indicate a significant disconnect between the …

Macrospin Model To Explain The Absence Of Preswitching Oscillations In Magnetic Tunnel Junctions: Fieldlike Spin-Transfer Torque, Samir Garzon, Yaroslaw Bazaliy, Richard A. Webb, Mark Covington, Shehzaad Kaka, Thomas M. Crawford Mar 2009

Macrospin Model To Explain The Absence Of Preswitching Oscillations In Magnetic Tunnel Junctions: Fieldlike Spin-Transfer Torque, Samir Garzon, Yaroslaw Bazaliy, Richard A. Webb, Mark Covington, Shehzaad Kaka, Thomas M. Crawford

Faculty Publications

We show that the absence of preswitching oscillations (“incubation delay”) in magnetic tunnel junctions can be explained within the macrospin model by a sizable fieldlike component of the spin-transfer torque. It is further suggested that measurements of the voltage dependence of tunnel junction switching time in the presence of external easy axis magnetic fields can be used to determine the magnitude and voltage dependence of the fieldlike torque.

Enhancing The Communication Competency Of Business Undergraduates: A Consumer Socialization Perspective, K. C. Gehrt, M. O'Brien, David Mease Mar 2009

Enhancing The Communication Competency Of Business Undergraduates: A Consumer Socialization Perspective, K. C. Gehrt, M. O'Brien, David Mease

Faculty Publications

Explaining how individuals acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively participate in society is often accomplished through Socialization Theory. We investigate numerous socialization agents and their relationship with the communication competency of university business majors. Communication competency (reading, writing, and verbal) was measured via both a standardized skill test and self report. Exploratory analysis was conducted upon high and low communication competency groups that were identified via cluster analysis. Our findings generally indicate the most important socialization agents are via personal interactions whereas the least important socialization agents are influencing via primarily electronic or media-based methods.

Semigroup Closures Of Finite Rank Symmetric Inverse Semigroups, Oleg Gutik, Jimmie Lawson, Dušan Repovš Mar 2009

Semigroup Closures Of Finite Rank Symmetric Inverse Semigroups, Oleg Gutik, Jimmie Lawson, Dušan Repovš

Faculty Publications

We introduce the notion of semigroup with a tight ideal series and investigate their closures in semitopological semigroups, particularly inverse semigroups with continuous inversion. As a corollary we show that the symmetric inverse semigroup of finite transformations I λn of the rank ≤ n is algebraically closed in the class of (semi)topological inverse semigroups with continuous inversion. We also derive related results about the nonexistence of (partial) compactifications of classes of semigroups that we consider. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Perverse Coherent Sheaves And The Geometry Of Special Pieces In The Unipotent Variety, Pramod N. Achar, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

Let X be a scheme of finite type over a Noetherian base scheme S admitting a dualizing complex, and let U ⊂ X be an open set whose complement has codimension at least 2. We extend the Deligne-Bezrukavnikov theory of perverse coherent sheaves by showing that a coherent intermediate extension (or intersection cohomology) functor from perverse sheaves on U to perverse sheaves on X may be defined for a much broader class of perversities than has previously been known. We also introduce a derived category version of the coherent intermediate extension functor. Under suitable hypotheses, we introduce a construction (called …

The production of excited charm, D 1(2420)0 and D 2* (2460)0, and charm-strange, D s1(2536)±, mesons in ep collisions was measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb -1. Masses, widths and helicity parameters were determined. The measured yields were converted to the rates of c quarks hadronising as a given excited charm meson and to the ratios of the dominant D 2* (2460)0 and D s1(2536) ± branching fractions. A search for the radially excited charm meson, D *(2640)±, was also performed. The results are compared with those measured previously and with theoretical …

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng Mar 2009

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

Web data being transmitted over a network channel on the Internet with excessive amount of data causes data processing problems, which include selectively choosing useful information to be retained for various data applications. In this paper, we present an approach for filtering less-informative attribute data from a source Website. A scheme for filtering attributes, instead of tuples (records), from a Website becomes imperative, since filtering a complete tuple would lead to filtering some informative, as well as less-informative, attribute data in the tuple. Since filtered data at the source Website may be of interest to the user at the destination …

David, Judson W. Harvey, Patrick J. Mulholland, Sybil P. Seitzinger, Craig R. Tobias, Christina Tonitto, Wilfred M. Wollheim

Faculty Publications

The importance of lotic systems as sinks for nitrogen inputs is well recognized. A fraction of nitrogen in streamflow is removed to the atmosphere via denitrification with the remainder exported in streamflow as nitrogen loads. At the watershed scale, there is a keen interest in understanding the factors that control the fate of nitrogen throughout the stream channel network, with particular attention to the processes that deliver large nitrogen loads to sensitive coastal ecosystems. We use a dynamic stream transport model to assess biogeochemical (nitrate loadings, concentration, temperature) and hydrological (discharge, depth, velocity) effects on reach-scale denitrification and nitrate removal …

Developing A Robust Geologic Conceptual Model Using Pseudo 3-D P-Wave Seismic Reflection Data, Adrian Addison, Michael G. Waddell, Camelia C. Knapp, Duke T. Brantley, John M. Shafer

Faculty Publications

As part of a multiscale hydrogeophysical and modeling study, a pseudo three-dimensional (3-D) seismic surveywas conducted over a contaminant plume at P area, Savannah River site (South Carolina), to enhance the existing geologicmodel by resolving uncertainties in the lithostratigraphic sequence. The geometry of the dissolved phase trichloroethylene plume, based on initial site characterization, appears to be confined to a narrow corridor within the Eocene sand overlying a clay unit approximately 25m(82 ft) below land surface. Processing the seismic data as a 3-D data volume instead of a series of closely spaced two-dimensional lines allowed for better interpretation of the target …

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson Mar 2009

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Computer network cyber-security is a very serious concern in many commercial, industrial, and military environments. This paper proposes a new computer network security approach defined by self organized agent swarms (SOMAS) which provides a novel computer network security management framework based upon desired overall system behaviors. The SOMAS structure evolves based upon the partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) formal model and the more complex interactive-POMDP and decentralized-POMDP models. Example swarm specific and network based behaviors are formalized and simulated. This paper illustrates through various statistical testing techniques, the significance of this proposed SOMAS architecture.

Turduckening Black Holes: An Analytical And Computational Study, David Brown, Peter Diener, Olivier Sarbach, Erik Schnetter, Manuel Tiglio

Faculty Publications

We provide a detailed analysis of several aspects of the turduckening technique for evolving black holes. At the analytical level we study the constraint propagation for a family of formulations of Einstein's field equations and identify under what conditions the turducken procedure is rigorously justified and under what conditions constraint violations will propagate to the outside of the black holes. We present high resolution spherically symmetric studies which verify our analytical predictions. Then we present three-dimensional simulations of single distorted black holes using different variations of the turduckening method and also the puncture method. We study the effect that these …

Survival Analysis With High-Dimensional Covariates: An Application In Microarray Studies, David Engler, Yi Li

Faculty Publications

Use of microarray technology often leads to high-dimensional and low-sample size (HDLSS) data settings. A variety of approaches have been proposed for variable selection in this context. However, only a small number of these have been adapted for time-to-event data where censoring is present. Among standard variable selection methods shown both to have good predictive accuracy and to be computationally efficient is the elastic net penalization approach. In this paper, adaptations of the elastic net approach are presented for variable selection both under the Cox proportional hazards model and under an accelerated failure time (AFT) model. Assessment of the two …

In 1969, Hirsch posed the following problem: given a diffeomorphism f:N → N and a compact invariant hyperbolic set Λ of f, describe the topology of Λ and the dynamics of f restricted to Λ. We solve the problem where Λ=M^3 is a closed 3-manifold: if M^3 is orientable, then it is a connected sum of tori and handles; otherwise it is a connected sum of tori and handles quotiented by involutions.

Linear-Optical Hyperentanglement-Assisted Quantum Error-Correcting Code, Mark M. Wilde, Dmitry B. Uskov Feb 2009

Linear-Optical Hyperentanglement-Assisted Quantum Error-Correcting Code, Mark M. Wilde, Dmitry B. Uskov

Faculty Publications

We propose a linear-optical implementation of a hyperentanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting code. The code is hyperentanglement assisted because the shared entanglement resource is a photonic state hyperentangled in polarization and orbital angular momentum. It is possible to encode, decode, and diagnose channel errors using linear-optical techniques. The code corrects for polarization "flip" errors and is thus suitable only for a proof-of-principle experiment. The encoding and decoding circuits use a Knill-Laflamme-Milburn-like scheme for transforming polarization and orbital angular momentum photonic qubits. A numerical optimization algorithm finds a unit-fidelity encoding circuit that requires only three ancilla modes and has success probability equal to …

Staggered t-structures are a class of t-structures on derived categories of equivariant coherent sheaves. In this Note, we show that the derived category of coherent sheaves on a partial flag variety, equivariant for a Borel subgroup, admits a staggered t-structure with the property that all objects in its heart have finite length. As a consequence, we obtain a basis for its equivariant K-theory consisting of simple staggered sheaves. To cite this article: P.N. Achar, D.S. Sage, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. Emails are unquestionably one of the most popular communication media these days. Not only they are fast and reliable, but also free in general. Unfortunately, a significant number of emails received by email users on a daily basis are spam. This fact is annoying, since spam emails translate into a waste of user’s time in reviewing and deleting them. In addition, spam emails consume resources, such as storage, bandwidth, and computer processing time. Many attempts have been made in the past to eradicate spam emails; however, none has been proved highly effective. In this paper, we propose a spam-email detection …
