Identifying All Matches Of A Rigid Object In An Input Image Using Visible Triangles, Abdullah N. Arslan
Identifying All Matches Of A Rigid Object In An Input Image Using Visible Triangles, Abdullah N. Arslan
Faculty Publications
It has been suggested that for objects identifiable by their corners, every triangle formed by these corner points can serve as a reference for detecting other corner points. This approach enables effective rigid object detection, including partial matches. However, when there are many corner points, the implementation becomes impractical due to excessive memory requirements. To overcome this, we propose a new algorithm that leverages Delaunay triangulation, considering only the triangles generated by the Delaunay triangulation to reduce the complexity of the original approach. Our algorithm is significantly faster and requires significantly less memory, offering a viable solution for large problem …
Permutations Minimizing The Number Of Collinear Triples, Joshua Cooper, Jack Hyatt
Permutations Minimizing The Number Of Collinear Triples, Joshua Cooper, Jack Hyatt
Faculty Publications
We characterize the permutations of Fq whose graph minimizes the number of collinear triples and describe the lexicographically-least one, confirming a conjecture of Cooper-Solymosi. This question is connected to Dudeney’s No-3-in-a-Line problem, the Heilbronn triangle problem, and the structure of finite plane Kakeya sets. We discuss a connection with complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares and state a few open problems primarily about general finite affine planes.
The Forms Of Representation: How To Be A Kantian Realist, Willem A. Devries
The Forms Of Representation: How To Be A Kantian Realist, Willem A. Devries
Faculty Publications
Sellars argued that Kant did not make certain distinctions concerning space and time, and because of this adopted his transcendental idealism. Once these distinctions are made, the path to realism remains open. Sellars' argument is not entirely clear. This essay attempts to clarify the argument, showing why Sellars believed he could remain a scientific realist while also adopting a Kantian style epistemology.

Poromechanical Solution For One-Dimensional Large Strain Consolidation Of Modified Cam-Clay Soil, Sheng Li Chen, Hai Sui Yu, Younane N. Abousleiman, Christopher E. Kees
Faculty Publications
A theoretical model describing the one-dimensional large strain consolidation of the modified Cam-Clay soil is presented in this paper. The model is based on the Lagrangian formulation and is capable of featuring the variability of soil compressibility (inherently due to the direct incorporation of the specific Cam-Clay plasticity model) and permeability, as well as the impact of the overconsolidation ratio (OCR). The derivation starts from the establishment of the incremental stress–strain relations for both purely elastic and elastoplastic deformations under one-dimensional compression conditions, and thereafter the coefficients of compressibility/volume change that are essential to the consolidation analysis. The governing partial …

Browsing Within An Academic Library, Holt Zaugg, Jillian Bunderson
Browsing Within An Academic Library, Holt Zaugg, Jillian Bunderson
Faculty Publications
Purpose – Browsing library resources is a method long used by researchers to expand their understanding of ill-defined projects and to have serendipitous research discoveries. This study sought to understand the browsing activities of students in an academic library. Design/methodology/approach – The study used two methods. First, a link to an online survey was posted on posters throughout the library inviting students to share their browsing experience. Second, library security officers (student employees) were asked to count the number of people browsing within the stacks as they conducted their hourly walk-throughs of the library. Browsing was broadly defined as anyone …
The Serendipity Of Discovery: Life Of A Geochemist, Willard S. Moore
The Serendipity Of Discovery: Life Of A Geochemist, Willard S. Moore
Faculty Publications
My strategy for writing this autobiography is to use examples of how working on seemingly different projects can often lead to outcomes more important than originally envisioned. Serendipity is a "happy accident"; specifically, the accident of discovering something useful without directly looking for it. This often occurs when two research projects converge unexpectedly. The main text contains examples of how serendipity has led me to important discoveries including: (a) finding surprisingly high 228Ra activities in the ocean, (b) developing a means of rapidly and quantitatively extracting radium from seawater, (c) devising a rapid, sensitive method of measuring 224Ra …
Extending Revised Lewis Gear Root Bending Stress Model To Addendum Modified Cylindrical Gears, Edward E. Osakue
Extending Revised Lewis Gear Root Bending Stress Model To Addendum Modified Cylindrical Gears, Edward E. Osakue
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a new revised Lewis gear bending root stress model for both standard profile and profile-shifted cylindrical gears. The three parameters that are used to extend the root bending stress capacity of standard profile gears to profile-shifted gears are the profile shift radius factor, the profile shift load factor, and the modified Lewis stress factor. These three parameters are functions of the profile shift factor. The new bending capacity model is used to estimate the bending stresses for some standard profile gears with nominal helix angles between 0o to 41.41o and compared with estimates of AGMA model. The …
A Bevel Gear Root Bending Stress Model, Edward E. Osakue, Rasoul Saneifard
A Bevel Gear Root Bending Stress Model, Edward E. Osakue, Rasoul Saneifard
Faculty Publications
A reversed Lewis root bending stress capacity model for bevel gears is presented. The model is developed from first principle based on the Tredgold’s approximation of a bevel gear. The approximation conceptually transforms a bevel gear into a spur gear. The load distribution of the bevel gear facewidth is assumed to be triangular so that the stress at the gear is constant over the facewidth. Six design cases of root bending stress computations from different references are done using the new and AGMA models. The stress estimates from the new and AGMA models were compared. The stress deviations associated with …

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, school absences have skyrocketed. While racially minoritized, disabled, and low-income students have historically been, and remain, most likely to experience absence, white and affluent students’ rates of attendance have also declined. To respond to this new universality of student absenteeism, some policymakers have begun to seek alternatives to what we term “the truancy paradigm.”
We define the truancy paradigm as the range of coercive and often punitive interventions deployed by states and school districts to enforce compulsory attendance statutes. This paradigm, we argue, wrongly assumes (a) that strict enforcement of compulsory attendance laws …

Although self-regulation (SR) has long been seen as an important educational concept, we know little about how to foster it in higher education online student populations. This research addresses this need by introducing an SR intervention into a preservice teacher course. The 30 students who participated used an intervention consisting of weekly student goal setting and self-reflection. Using data collected from a self-regulation survey, weekly reflections, final exam reflections, and interviews, all but one student indicated that the process of setting a goal weekly and especially reflecting on their actions during the week increased their self-regulation abilities. More than half …

A Generalized Coherence Framework For Quantifying Input Contributions In Multi-Input Systems With Correlated Or Uncorrelated Inputs, Nolan H. Howes, Matthew S. Allen, Dario Farina, Steven Knight Charles
Faculty Publications
In multi-input systems, it is often necessary to quantify the contribution of each input to an output. Such contribution analysis is frequently performed using coherence. However, when correlation is present between inputs, existing coherence measures do not accurately quantify the contribution of individual inputs, except in special cases. Here we propose an expanded coherence framework that enables contribution analysis in any multi-input system, regardless of input correlation. We bridged the gap by defining three new coherence measures: component, excluded, and isolated coherence. Component coherence is an intermediate measure that decomposes measured output power into components attributable to inputs directly vs …

This paper presents CoNaV, a comprehensive framework for creating a multi-vehicle cooperative localization (CL) testbed designed to support the benchmarking, development, and deployment of cooperative navigation algorithms. Given the essential role of CL in improving localization accuracy for both defense and civilian applications, CoNaV provides a robust environment for rigorously validating algorithms under real-world conditions. By establishing a benchmark for CL algorithms, CoNaV lays a foundation for advancing research into more sophisticated and distributed CL solutions. This framework highlights the potential of cooperative navigation to enhance multi-vehicle operations and offers a scalable, practical approach for future developments in CL technology.

Objective: This study presents a mathematical model and finite element simulations to investigate interstitial fluid flow and nanodrug transport in a solid tumor, incorporating transvascular exchange, convection–diffusion–reaction dynamics, and intratumoral injection mechanisms. Impact Statement: Optimizing nanodrug distribution remains a critical challenge in cancer therapy. The proposed model advances nanomedicine by enhancing the mechanistic understanding of nanodrug transport in a solid tumor. Introduction: Cancer, a global threat, often manifests as solid tumors driven by uncontrolled cell growth. The heterogeneous microenvironment, lymphatic drainage, nano-bio interactions, and elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) hinder effective nanodrug delivery. Nanoparticle (NP)-based drug delivery systems offer a …

This study investigates convergence between developed and developing countries’ GDP during the pre-COVID-19 era (1960-2019) and post-COVID-19 era (2020-2023) using World Bank data and the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test. For the pre-COVID period, results show no significant convergence, with an ADF statistic of −1.78 and a P = 0.39, likely due to disparities in industrialization and governance. Similarly, post-COVID results (ADF statistic −1.2, P = 0.67) also suggest no convergence, possibly exacerbated by pandemic-related challenges. The study highlights that structural barriers and the pandemic have hindered economic convergence.

For the past century, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the importance of parents’ rights to direct their children’s upbringing and education. Yet suddenly the rhetoric of parental rights is being used to ground a broad range of claims on issues such as what can be taught in public schools, when minors can access gender-affirming care, or who will be punished for helping minors travel for abortion care. Why have parental-rights claims surged so visibly in contemporary law and politics? And are all the new arguments made under the banner of parental rights equally rooted in constitutional precedent?

This article explores the intersection of neurodiversity and innovation through the lens of Temple Grandin’s contributions to livestock handling systems and her philosophical alignment with the U.S. patent system. Drawing on cognitive research by Simon Baron-Cohen, archaeological insights from Penny Spikins, and personal reflections, I argue that autistic cognitive styles—characterized by heightened “folk physics” aptitudes and visual thinking—have historically driven technological progress. Grandin’s patented inventions, motivated by sensory-based empathy for animals, exemplify how neurodivergent inventors seek to embed their conceptions of ethical utility into the nation’s technological infrastructure. The article critiques modern patent litigation trends, advocating instead for a system …

New battery materials with improved transport are needed. Typical measurements yield widely varying voltage-dependent diffusivities and reporting practices are diverse. Some materials (e.g. first-order phase change) have most redox occur at a specific voltage and may be sufficiently represented by singular transport metrics. Many rapid intercalation materials, however, exhibit second-order phase transitions with redox over a broad voltage range. How should such cases be compared? The use of capacity-weighted average values is suggested where voltage-dependent metrics are consolidated into representative descriptors as figures-of-merit. Examples are elaborated where differential capacity (dQ/dV) is used to derive a …
