Learning Set Representations For Lwir In-Scene Atmospheric Compensation, Nicholas M. Westing, Kevin C. Gross, Brett J. Borghetti, Jacob A. Martin, Joseph Meola

Faculty Publications

Atmospheric compensation of long-wave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral imagery is investigated in this article using set representations learned by a neural network. This approach relies on synthetic at-sensor radiance data derived from collected radiosondes and a diverse database of measured emissivity spectra sampled at a range of surface temperatures. The network loss function relies on LWIR radiative transfer equations to update model parameters. Atmospheric predictions are made on a set of diverse pixels extracted from the scene, without knowledge of blackbody pixels or pixel temperatures. The network architecture utilizes permutation-invariant layers to predict a set representation, similar to the work performed …

State-Circuit Split: Reconciling Tennessee Damage Caps After Lindenberg And Mcclay, Bailey D. Barnes

Faculty Publications

A divided panel of jurists on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit invalidated Tennessee's caps on punitive damages in Lindenberg v. Jackson National Life Insurance Company on December 21, 2018. The Sixth Circuit, sitting en bane, denied an application to rehear the case. A year later, the United States Supreme Court denied the petitions for writs of certiorari of both Jackson National Life Insurance Company and the State of Tennessee. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Supreme Court heard a challenge, via certified question from the Middle District of Tennessee, to the Volunteer State's statutory limits on non-economic damages. …

Continuous Discrete Sequential Observers For Time-Varying Systems Under Sampling And Input Delays, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff Apr 2020

Continuous Discrete Sequential Observers For Time-Varying Systems Under Sampling And Input Delays, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide continuous-discrete observers for a large class of time-varying linear systems where the inputs and outputs have sampling and delays, and where the systems and outputs contain uncertainties. We allow the delays in the output and input to differ and to be arbitrarily long. We use the observers to design controls that ensure input-to-state stability, under delays and sampling. The observers and controls have no distributed terms. We illustrate our work in a dc motor model.

Noise Resilience Of Variational Quantum Compiling, Kunal Sharma, Sumeet Khatri2, M. Cerezo, Patrick J. Coles Apr 2020

Noise Resilience Of Variational Quantum Compiling, Kunal Sharma, Sumeet Khatri2, M. Cerezo, Patrick J. Coles

Faculty Publications

Variational hybrid quantum-classical algorithms (VHQCAs) are near-term algorithms that leverage classical optimization to minimize a cost function, which is efficiently evaluated on a quantum computer. Recently VHQCAs have been proposed for quantum compiling, where a target unitary U is compiled into a short-depth gate sequence V. In this work, we report on a surprising form of noise resilience for these algorithms. Namely, we find one often learns the correct gate sequence V (i.e. the correct variational parameters) despite various sources of incoherent noise acting during the cost-evaluation circuit. Our main results are rigorous theorems stating that the optimal variational parameters …

Genomic Evidence For Formate Metabolism By As The Key To Unlocking Deep Carbon In Lost City Microbial Ecosystems, Julia M. Mcgonigle, Susan Q. Lang, William J. Brazelton Apr 2020

Genomic Evidence For Formate Metabolism By As The Key To Unlocking Deep Carbon In Lost City Microbial Ecosystems, Julia M. Mcgonigle, Susan Q. Lang, William J. Brazelton

Faculty Publications

The Lost City hydrothermal field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge supports dense microbial life on the lofty calcium carbonate chimney structures. The vent field is fueled by chemical reactions between the ultramafic rock under the chimneys and ambient seawater. These serpentinization reactions provide reducing power (as hydrogen gas) and organic compounds that can serve as microbial food; the most abundant of these are methane and formate. Previous studies have characterized the interior of the chimneys as a single-species biofilm inhabited by the Lost City , but they also indicated that this methanogen is unable to metabolize formate. The new metagenomic results …

Experimental Determination Of The (0/−) Level For Mg Acceptors In Β-Ga2O3 Crystals, Christopher A. Lenyk, Timothy D. Gustafson, Sergey A. Basun, Larry E. Halliburton, Nancy C. Giles

Faculty Publications

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to experimentally determine the (0/−) level of the Mg acceptor in an Mg-doped β-Ga2O3 crystal. Our results place this level 0.65 eV (±0.05 eV) above the valence band, a position closer to the valence band than the predictions of several recent computational studies. The crystal used in this investigation was grown by the Czochralski method and contains large concentrations of Mg acceptors and Ir donors, as well as a small concentration of Fe ions and an even smaller concentration of Cr ions. Below room temperature, illumination with 325 nm laser light …

Single-Pulse, Kerr-Effect Mueller Matrix Lidar Polarimeter, Keyser, Christian K., Richard K. Martin, Helena Lopez-Aviles, Khanh Nguyen, Arielle M. Adams, Demetrios Christodoulides

Faculty Publications

We present a novel light detection and ranging (LiDAR) polarimeter that enables measurement of 12 of 16 sample Mueller matrix elements in a single, 10 ns pulse. The new polarization state generator (PSG) leverages Kerr phase modulation in a birefringent optical fiber, creating a probe pulse characterized by temporally varying polarization. Theoretical expressions for the Polarization State Generator (PSG) Stokes vector are derived for birefringent walk-off and no walk-off and incorporated into a time-dependent polarimeter signal model employing multiple polarization state analyzers (PSA). Polarimeter modeling compares the Kerr effect and electro-optic phase modulator–based PSG using a single Polarization State Analyzer …

This study uses descriptive and inferential statistics to identify cost growth Analysis of Military Construction of military construction (MILCON) at the programmatic level, while bridging the gap between Selected Acquisition Report (SAR) estimates and actual project costs. Findings of this study aid the cost community with appropriate allocation of resources in developing these estimates. Overall, Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAP) appear to experience more negative growth (cost savings) in MILCON estimates on reviewed SARs— typically less than 0.2% of the total program cost. SAR estimates became more accurate from the first to last SAR in comparison to the total MILCON …

Seasonal Patterns Of Surface Inorgamic Carbon System Variables In The Gulf Of Mexico Inferred From A Regional High-Resolution Ocean Biogeochemical Model, Fabian A. Gomez, Rik Wanninkhof, Leticia Barbero, Sang Ki Lee, Frank J. Hernandez Mar 2020

Seasonal Patterns Of Surface Inorgamic Carbon System Variables In The Gulf Of Mexico Inferred From A Regional High-Resolution Ocean Biogeochemical Model, Fabian A. Gomez, Rik Wanninkhof, Leticia Barbero, Sang Ki Lee, Frank J. Hernandez

Faculty Publications

Uncertainties in carbon chemistry variability still remain large in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), as data gaps limit our ability to infer basin-wide patterns. Here we configure and validate a regional high-resolution ocean biogeochemical model for the GoM to describe seasonal patterns in surface pressure of CO2 (pCO2), aragonite saturation state (ΩAr), and sea–air CO2 flux. Model results indicate that seasonal changes in surface pCO2 are strongly controlled by temperature across most of the GoM basin, except in the vicinity of the Mississippi–Atchafalaya river system delta, where runoff largely controls dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) …

Developing Outreach Events That Impact Underrepresented Students: Are We Doing It Right?, Andrew J. Gall, Peter J. Vollbrecht, Tristan Tobias

Faculty Publications

Many outreach programs share the common goals of serving underrepresented groups in STEM and improving public attitudes toward science. To meet these goals, scientists must find ways to both reach the appropriate audience and communicate the importance of science in meaningful and accessible ways. This requires careful consideration of the outreach method being used. Two common outreach methods include in‐school visits (scientist in the classroom) and science fairs or open houses. Here, we compare the effectiveness of these two outreach methods in meeting the goals of reaching underrepresented students and/or students with less initial interest in science. We have found …

A grand challenge facing humanity is how to produce food for a growing population in the face of a changing climate and environmental degradation. Although empirical evidence remains sparse, management strategies that increase environmental sustainability, such as increasing agroecosystem diversity through crop rotations, may also increase resilience to weather extremes without sacrificing yields. We used multilevel regression analyses of long-term crop yield datasets across a continental precipitation gradient to assess how temporal crop diversification affects maize yields in intensively managed grain systems. More diverse rotations increased maize yields over time and across all growing conditions (28.1% on average), including in …

Tidal And Nonequilibrium Casimir Effects In Free Fall, Justin H. Wilson, Francesco Sorge, Stephen A. Fulling

Faculty Publications

In this work, we consider a Casimir apparatus that is put into free fall (e.g., falling into a black hole). Working in 1+1D, we find that two main effects occur: First, the Casimir energy density experiences a tidal effect where negative energy is pushed toward the plates and the resulting force experienced by the plates is increased. Second, the process of falling is inherently nonequilibrium and we treat it as such, demonstrating that the Casimir energy density moves back and forth between the plates after being "dropped," with the force modulating in synchrony. In this way, the Casimir energy behaves …

Reliable Solar Irradiance Prediction Using Ensemble Learning-Based Models: A Comparative Study, Junho Lee, Wu Wang, Fouzi Harrou, Ying Sun

Faculty Publications

Accurately predicting solar irradiance is important in designing and efficiently managing photovoltaic systems. This paper aims to provide a reliable short-term prediction of solar irradiance based on various meteorological factors using ensemble learning-based models that take into account the time-dependent nature of the solar irradiance data. The use of ensemble learning models is motivated by their desirable characteristics in combining several weak regressors to achieve an improved prediction quality relative to conventional single learners. Furthermore, they reduce the overall prediction error and have the ability to combine different models. In this paper, we first investigate the prediction performance of the …

Existence And Uniqueness Of The Karcher Mean On Unital C⁎-Algebras, Jimmie Lawson

Faculty Publications

The Karcher mean on the cone Ω of invertible positive elements of the C⁎-algebra B(E) of bounded operators on a Hilbert space E has recently been extended to a contractive barycentric map on the space of L1-probability measures on Ω. In this paper we first show that the barycenter satisfies the Karcher equation and then establish the uniqueness of the solution. Next we establish that the Karcher mean is real analytic in each of its coordinates, and use this fact to show that both the Karcher mean and Karcher barycenter map exist and are unique on any unital C⁎-algebra. The …

Tracking And Parameter Identification For Model Reference Adaptive Control, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide barrier Lyapunov functions for model reference adaptive control algorithms, allowing us to prove robustness in the input-to-state stability framework and to compute rates of exponential convergence of the tracking and parameter identification errors to zero. Our results ensure identification of all entries of the unknown weight and control effectiveness matrices. We provide easily checked sufficient conditions for our relaxed persistency of excitation conditions to hold. Our illustrative numerical example demonstrates the performance of the control methods.

The study of post-disaster recovery requires an understanding of the reconstruction process and growth trend of the impacted regions. In case of earthquakes, while remote sensing has been applied for response and damage assessment, its application has not been investigated thoroughly for monitoring the recovery dynamics in spatially and temporally explicit dimensions. The need and necessity for tracking the change in the built-environment through time is essential for post-disaster recovery modeling, and remote sensing is particularly useful for obtaining this information when other sources of data are scarce or unavailable. Additionally, the longitudinal study of repeated observations over time in …

Efficiently Computable Bounds For Magic State Distillation, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde, Yuan Su Mar 2020

Efficiently Computable Bounds For Magic State Distillation, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde, Yuan Su

Faculty Publications

Magic-state distillation (or nonstabilizer state manipulation) is a crucial component in the leading approaches to realizing scalable, fault-tolerant, and universal quantum computation. Related to nonstabilizer state manipulation is the resource theory of nonstabilizer states, for which one of the goals is to characterize and quantify nonstabilizerness of a quantum state. In this Letter, we introduce the family of thauma measures to quantify the amount of nonstabilizerness in a quantum state, and we exploit this family of measures to address several open questions in the resource theory of nonstabilizer states. As a first application, we establish the hypothesis testing thauma as …

Instances of spoofing and jamming of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) have emphasized the need for alternative navigation methods. Aerial navigation by magnetic map matching has been demonstrated as a viable GNSS‐alternative navigation technique. Flight test demonstrations have achieved accuracies of tens of meters over hour‐long flights, but these flights required accurate magnetic maps which are not always available. Magnetic map availability and resolution vary widely around the globe. Removing the dependency on prior survey maps extends the benefits of aerial magnetic navigation methods to small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) at lower altitudes where magnetic maps are especially undersampled or …

Minimizing Total Energy Cost And Tardiness Penalty For A Scheduling-Layout Problem In A Flexible Job Shop System: A Comparison Of Four Metaheuristic Algorithms, Ahmad Ebrahimi, Hyun Woo Jeon, Seokgi Lee, Chao Wang

Faculty Publications

Job scheduling and machine layout are interrelated in improving energy consumption (EC) and productivity measures such as tardiness and represent two important decisions that must be made by manufacturers. This interdependency can be explained by transportation time, which connects scheduling and layout. Scheduling and layout, however, have not been thoroughly studied in conjunction using an integrated model in the context of sustainable manufacturing. Hence, we propose an energy-aware optimization model in which scheduling is integrated with layout in a single-level framework. More specifically, a single objective function is defined to minimize the facility energy cost and the job tardiness penalty, …

Modeling And Data Infrastructure For Human-Centric Design And Operation Of Sustainable, Healthy Buildings Through A Case Study, Yong X. Tao, Yimin Zhu, Ulrike Passe

Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on data infrastructure that is central to the modeling of design and operation of sustainable and healthy buildings. While reducing energy consumption by making buildings more energy efficient has been touted as an easily obtainable approach to promoting carbon-neutral energy societies, the sustainable buildings’ benefits and impacts on human wellbeing have not been clearly quantified to the extent that they may directly influence the decision of adopting sustainable building designs. The authors argue that focusing on the wellbeing of people occupying the buildings will lead to significant changes in the decision-making process of the design and operation …

Optimizing The Environmental And Economic Sustainability Of Remote Community Infrastructure, Jamie E. Filer, Justin D. Delorit, Andrew J. Hoisington, Steven J. Schuldt

Faculty Publications

Remote communities such as rural villages, post-disaster housing camps, and military forward operating bases are often located in remote and hostile areas with limited or no access to established infrastructure grids. Operating these communities with conventional assets requires constant resupply, which yields a significant logistical burden, creates negative environmental impacts, and increases costs. For example, a 2000-member isolated village in northern Canada relying on diesel generators required 8.6 million USD of fuel per year and emitted 8500 tons of carbon dioxide. Remote community planners can mitigate these negative impacts by selecting sustainable technologies that minimize resource consumption and emissions. However, …
